18th /19th JUNE 2016

12th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Dear Parishioners,
Within the Christian tradition, the cross is a central fact. The crucifix
reminds us of the suffering, death and resurrection of our Saviour, Jesus
Christ. Yet, so often we wonder about SUFFERING in our lives and in the
world. We think it’s unfair that we and others suffer. While we don’t want to
bring suffering on ourselves, yet, it is somehow part of our lives.
In our first reading and gospel, there is the reference to the suffering of Jesus. It
emerges from Jesus’ question “Who do people say I am?” There was a lot of speculation at
the time: “Who is this person preaching love and healing people. Some claims that John the
Baptist, or Elijah or one of the ancient prophets had returned”.
But then Jesus asked: “Who do you say I am?” St Peter spoke up from the rest – “You
are the Christ of God”. This profession of faith may not be as clear as it sounds! There was
also the idea/rumours about that the Messiah would also get rid of the Romans. Jesus had
to correct this political element, and so goes on to speak about the suffering servant. In fact
there are three readings of Jesus foretelling his suffering and death and that he would be
raised up after three days.
We are invited to take up our cross daily and follow Jesus. Our cross may be small or
large, but Jesus gives us enough strength to carry that burden. We need to see “our cross” as
an opportunity to live, serve and redeem ourselves and others by our cheerful acceptance
and see it as St Paul, ‘an honour to carry the cross with Jesus’.
ORDINATION ON SATURDAY 25th at 10:30am: You will remember the
announcement last week that we are blessed to have Damian Ryan with us after his
ordination to which an invitation is extended to all. There will be space at the Cathedral;
first come first served. At present there are thirteen of us going; a few more in attendance
would be nice! Please put your name on the list. We wish Damian every blessing on this
special day.
REFERENDUM: At long last and after much talk and considerations, we have to
decide on Thursday. There are so many contradicting statements that it is confusing. For
better or worse, I am clear, as are most of the Catholics in the UK. But as I have said two
weeks ago, the politicians will have a ‘field-day’ and will never forgive us, regardless of how
the vote goes!! Let us pray that the outcome is best for the good of all concerned.
APPLICATIONS: Please note the plans to draw up a list, especially on First
Communion and Confirmation candidates. It helps one planning immensely. To date: First
Communion – 11 applications and Confirmation 1.
Have a nice week! Fr Joe
