25th /26th JUNE 2016

13th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Dear Parishioners,
In the first reading today from the Book of Kings, Elijah and
Elisha appeared. It is a clear, direct message to Elijah that he is to be succeeded by Elisha.
He is to take the place of Elijah – he is to take on his mantle. He is to fill his shoes, in other
words. Elisha askes for double of Elijah’s spirit … and this he receives as Elijah is taken up
in the fiery chariot.
In the gospel, we see Jesus heading for Jerusalem. He has spoken of his betrayal,
suffering, death and resurrection. This is what he sees before him and there is no turning
back. Because of the amnesty between Jesus and the Samaritans, he is rejected in one of
their terms … but this does not deter Jesus. There is a sense of urgency about his ministry at
this moment. He is trying to generate the same urgency into the disciples too.
When James and John request revenge on the rejecting town, Jesus does not agree –
he rebukes them. The mercy of Jesus is evident here. What Jesus is saying to his disciples
and to us is: “nothing must distract you from following me”, - even what seems to be worthy
causes, like saying goodbye and burying the dead … there is a clear sense of urgency about
spreading the Good News.
THANKS: To all who were able to attend the ordination at the Cathedral today(Sat). I
am sure Damian appreciated our presence there. We hope he has a good holiday over the
Summer and then join us here in the parish in September.
NOTE the message from Marzena who is planning to volunteer in a Lourdes trip. It is
good to see young people willing to give their time and energy to help others. Please be as
generous as you can!
PLANNED GIVING CAMPAIGN: It has been suggested by the Finance Department of
the Diocese that we should have a renewed Planned Giving Campaign. It must be eight
years since we have had such a project. There are many reasons why we need to increase
our financial situation in the Parish. This has been discussed at our last Pastoral Council
meeting. The campaign should start mid-September; more information nearer the time.
REFERENDUM: The people of the country have decided, we are to leave the EU. It is
very early (Friday AM) to make any worthwhile observation.. It is worth noting the London,
Scottish, Northern Ireland and Welsh voting. Interestingly, Haringey was amongst the
highest voters of Remain! The results will take months and years to unravel. Watch this
space!
That’s all for now. Have a nice week! Fr Joe

This means that I will be helping people
who are less able to get around during their
visit to Lourdes. I am extremely excited
about going with other students from the
Westminster Diocese and I am really
looking forward to helping pilgrims.
However, the trip costs £475, so to help
fund it, I am asking for donations. My Just
Giving page is
