of St. John’s in Pine Meadow
St. John’s mission is to nurture all people in their spiritual growth, in their Christian education, and in their relationship with God. The Rev. Salin Low, Rector May 2011

Easter is the beginning!
Because of all the work that goes into preparing for the services of Holy Week and all the energy it takes to participate in those services, there is a tendency to think of Easter as the end of our spiritual journey. The Church often reinforces this pattern by taking a break after Easter. We’ve given Lent our best and now we need a rest. In fact Easter is meant to be the beginning of a new phase of our spiritual life. The Easter experience is about Jesus living again for us, within us, and through us. Easter at its best reinvigorates us, so that we may be active in living our faith. The next few weeks at St. John’s will offer us the opportunity to be Easter people in our continued involvement in the life of our community with a number of special occasions taking place. On May 1 at 4 p.m. the confirmands will graduate from the Confirm not Conform course in which they have been participating since October. They have worked hard to prepare for a new time in their life in the church. The graduation ceremony will focus on their efforts and honor them. Their families will attend the ceremony and dinner, and it would be good if their parish family were also well represented. The following Sunday, May 8, at 10 a.m. will be the visitation by Bishop Curry when the ten young people will be confirmed and two adults will be received into the Episcopal Church. It will also be the day we dedicate the new addition and honor those whose support made it possible. And on Tuesday, May 24 at 7 p.m. we will host a concert by Watoto, a children’s choir from Uganda. The children have been orphaned by parents who died from AIDS and from the continuing civil war in that country. The choir speaks of their faith and of their hope in the future through wonderful music and story. This is an opportunity to remember our connection to neighbors around the world and our responsibility to help as we can. These are special times which affirm the new life that continues to course through our parish community, helping us to realize that we can make a difference in this world, locally and in distant places. And the difference we make can be in our time and for years to come, in the lives of the young people reaffirming their baptismal vows and young people returning to their far away homes with the memory of people who offer them hospitality, encouragement, and continued support throughout their challenging lives. Easter is the beginning!! And Easter gives us the strength to move beyond the beginning with a true and lively faith. Easter blessings and prayers for new life for all!

An Easy Way to Help
When you buy shopping/gift cards through St. John’s, you are making a contribution that does not cost you financially. It may take a little planning. Orders are taken the 1st and 3rd Sundays, and cards are delivered on the 2nd and 4th Sundays. Order folds are available in the narthex and can be placed in the lockbox at any time.

You could help through the summer: We could use a few more volunteers to help with weeding and watering during the summer. Each volunteer will be responsible for one week. Let us know if you are willing to help. Call the office at 379-3062 or email [email protected] to volunteer. You may also contact Ann Atwood at 738-1532 or abatwood @charter.net for further information.

PETER’S RETREAT
Upcoming Dates May 28th June 25th
Go with a group to take dinner to an AIDS residence in Hartford. Each month a group from St. John’s coordinates and serves a meal. We generally arrive about 5:00 PM and dine with the residents at 5:30 PM, returning to St. John’s around 7:00 PM. The residents are responsible for set-up and clean-up. Special thanks to the Alibozek Family for providing the meal on Saturday, April 23. Fran Frigo will be helping with the meal on May 28 and would like some help. Call the office if you are willing to help prepare food or take a meal to Peter’s Retreat. All summer dates are available.

PARISH REGISTER
(Broadly Defined)
The register is broadly defined, because there are often events in the lives of parishioners and their families not recorded in St. Johns’ register. It is good, however, for us to hear about these things. We will include baptisms, marriages, deaths, hospitalizations, graduations, and other events as we are notified. Births
Brandon Steven Tooke (Grandson of Pam & Michael Tooke) Elijah Michael Tipton (Great-grandson of Pam Tooke)

Confirmands’ Class Graduation Sunday, May 1 at 4 PM Dinner Follows
The class has worked hard, and the last event of the class is a graduation service at which the confirmands will perform two pieces and will recite scripture passages they have memorized. A dinner hosted by the Vestry will follow. All parishioners are welcome to attend and celebrate the students’ hard work. If you wish to attend the dinner, please notify the office ([email protected]) by Tuesday, April 26.

Confirmation & Building Dedication Sunday, May 8 at 10 AM Single Service Bishop Curry Returns
This is the first time in about 12 years that we have had a confirmation at St. John’s. We have 10 confirmands and two adults being received into the Episcopal Church. We also will dedicate the new addition and recognize the contributions that made it possible. The service will be followed by a reception honoring the confirmands. Please plan to attend.

Watoto Children’s Choirs have travelled internationally since 1994 as advocates for the estimated 50 million children in Africa, orphaned as a result of HIV/AIDS, war, poverty and disease. The choir is coming to St. John’s as an outreach project of our youth group. We have invited youth groups from other Episcopal churches in the area and expect a large crowd for an evening concert on the green. Please plan to come and bring your friends. If you want to help, contact Mimi Madden or the rector. Overnight housing is being arranged by Sue Bremer. We need 9 homes who will house an adult and 2-3 children.

The Confirmation Class presented the plans for the May 24 Watoto concert at the last Vestry meeting and asked for Vestry members’ help. They also gathered for an evening of rehearsal, practicing music to be sung at their graduation and confirmation.

The annual Passover seder was again led by the Krasows — Ken, Ben, and Kayte. Autumn Althen read part of the lesson, while the class listened.

Getting the palms ready is one of the last steps in the Altar Guild’s morning of polishing and cleaning. They get everything ready for Holy Week and must change hangings and veils several times during the week. Let them know you appreciate their dedication.
