PASADENA COVENANT CHURCH

September 2013

Pasadena Covenant Church Partners with Team World Vision
As you may have heard, Pasadena Covenant Church has taken on an exciting challenge to run the LA Marathon on March 9, 2014 with Team World Vision in the effort to raise money for clean water wells in the Congo. We’ve started getting our team of runners and walkers together, but there’s plenty of room for more of you to join! We’d love to have you run with us! If you’re interested in getting in shape, growing as a community, and saving lives, read on… What is Team World Vision? TWV walk/runs half marathons and marathons to fundraise for clean water in East Africa. They partner with local churches/organizations to mobilize people into action for the poorest of the poor. They have a global vision that transforms local communities. I’m not a runner, and a marathon sounds really long! Good news, you don’t have to run the whole thing! You can choose to either run the full marathon, or run/walk it with a partner as a half-marathon relay, meaning one of you will run the first half, and your partner will finish. Plus, the training plan is designed for non-runners! I struggled to run 2 miles last year when I started, but after ten weeks, I ran my first half marathon and it felt great! If you can run/walk a 5K, it’s absolutely doable. What exactly are we raising money for? We’ll be raising money to fund the building of wells in the Congo. TWV funds and trains local workers to build and maintain their own wells, so they will continue providing clean water for years in the future. And did you know that $50 is all it costs to provide clean water for one person for their entire life?! $50 saves a life! Why is building wells so important? When a community has no access to clean water children miss school, crops and livestock die, six thousand children die each day due to diarrheal diseases, and children who walk for miles each day to collect dirty water are at risk of being raped and kidnapped. Providing clean water mean children are safe and can go to school, crops and livestock thrive, and the child mortality rate drops by half! So if you are even a tiny bit interested, talk to Sallie Carey ([email protected]) about joining the team or check out our team webpage at http://team.worldvision.org/goto/LivingWater and join today!

Cross-Cultural Communication Specialists’ Praise & Prayer Requests
Katie VanStelle, a member of Pasadena Covenant, will be serving cross-culturally, teaching English in China. Here is her story as she begins a new chapter in her life and ways we can be praying for her: “As an elementary teacher, summer has always felt like an “in-between” time. I was no longer with the students from the previous year, and I hadn’t met my incoming students. Every summer, I both savored memories and anticipated all the promise of a new school year. The summer of 2013 has once again been an “in-between” time, one where I find myself looking at both the past and the future. “In the Rear-View Mirror” (The Past) Since my childhood, I have been fascinated with Asia and dreamed about traveling there. Graduating college, I anticipated someday teaching abroad. Years later, I taught two summers in China and one in Ukraine, experiences that intensified my goal of long-term teaching overseas. Besides nurturing my dream, I gained knowledge about teaching English as an additional language by finishing a master’s degree. Soon after graduation, my dreams came true as I accepted a teaching position at Qufu Normal University in China. In just a few weeks, I’ll be moving to China where I’ll be teaching English majors in Rizhao, a city on the coast. I’m so excited about all the possibilities of the coming year – teaching English as a foreign language to university students, forming relationships with colleagues and students, and showing God’s love to the people I meet through gifts of encouragement and friendship. I can’t wait to see what God has planned for me! “Through the Front Windshield” (The Future) As I anticipate the next academic year in China, I’m thankful that I’ll be earning a salary. As a result, I believe that I’ll have enough for my daily needs. However, I do have some financial concerns. For example, experienced expatriate teachers suggested that I get medical insurance with coverage for emergency medical evacuation. The cost of health coverage is about $3700 annually for both the premium and deductible. Because God has always been faithful, I am confident that, once again, he will supply what I need through a team of supportive family and friends.” Praises
 

God’s faithful leading Working out the details to help me go to China Safe travels, restful sleep, energy, good health, funds for health coverage. Wisdom and patience for cultural adjustment, good relationships with colleagues and students, my transition to university teaching. Growth in my faith, opportunities to show God’s love, finding a community of believers.

Life Groups Fall Semester begin September 15th!
I feel as though Summer has just begun. And as quickly as it came in with hot days, and sometimes cool nights, it is moving itself towards the exit. With fall rapidly approaching, comes another semester of Life Groups. This fall there will still be all the Life Group: Sunday Mornings you have come to know and love. These groups will continue to meet on, you guessed it, Sunday mornings in the 9:00 a.m. hour. The Life Group: Community Groups, those groups that meet in houses during the week each with a unique day and time, will kick off on the week of September 15th and run through the week December 1st. There are two opportunities I would like to highlight below! This semester we will also be having the second Life Group: Women’s Group, which last semester was lead by Kathy Waldner-Gourash, and I am happy to announce she has agreed to lead the fall semester group as well. Kathy did a wonderful job and it was great to see how excited she was about the Spirit’s moving and working in her life as well as those who attended the Life Group: Women’s Group. Are you married? If so this semester we will also be having a marriage course, similar to the parenting course we had last semester which was lead by our Alpha Team, headed up by Lina and William Myrvold. So right after you finish reading this article search for the article on the marriage course, read it, and get excited to be able to take a moment to strengthen your marriage, whether you think its already at a Herculean level, or its just plain weak. I know I mentioned a couple leaders by name, but honestly it is the leader of each group, which allows us to have such an opportunity for a thriving Life Group Ministry. So thank you to all you who take time out of your week to prepare and lead a Life Group! To sum up, if you are looking for a way to build relationships with others in this church, these Life Groups are a great place to start! Hope to see you at the sign up table beginning August 18th in the courtyard, or if you are technologically minded just scan the QR code to the right and it will take you to a sign up on the web. Grace and Peace, Thomas Hale

What is the Alpha Marriage Course?
Are you married or in a long-term cohabiting relationship? Have you been together for over a year? Would you like your relationship to be the best it can be? If you answered ‘yes’ to any of those questions then this course is for you! The Marriage Course is for any couple, whether you have been together for one year or 61 years and whether you feel you have a strong relationship or are struggling. If you have a strong marriage this course will help you make it even better and will reinforce your good habits. If, on the other hand, your marriage is in difficulty, the course will help provide you with very practical tools to help you work through the issues. Some couples who are separated have used the course as a way of trying to get back together. Whatever your situation, the practical tools you learn will help improve and strengthen your relationship. Alpha Marriage Course Sunday evenings 9/22/13-11/10/13 from 5:00-7:30pm. Please RSVP by 9/13/13, as it is very important for us to have an accurate headcount for the meals! Lina Myrvold (626) 627-7777
