II European Group News

 Lidia Zubler

Lidia in Chambéry, 2011.
One of the oldest members of the European Group, Lidia Zubler, died tragically on 20th October, 2012. Lidia was truly dedicated to the Group, attending almost every conference over the past 40 years. She will be sadly missed. The Group would like to express its condolences to Lidia’s friends and family. Memories of Lidia 20.8.1936 - 20.10.2012 Lidia Zubler, who very sadly and tragically died as result of a fire in her house, will be dearly missed by many members of the European Group. She originally went to her first conference of the European Group in order to find support as her husband got into conflict with the criminal law and was arrested. Lidia knew that the group took a critical stance towards Criminal Justice systems and the institution of the prison. What she found was not only the support she sought but also a group that was and is open, inviting, warm and full of comradeship. And so, despite separating from her husband, Lidia

CELEBRATING 40 YEARS …

continued to attend the many conferences that followed and various Steering Committee meetings as the representative of Switzerland. Lidia was a person with strong willpower and absolute integrity that lived according to her values. She lived a frugal life and had little income which she earned as a kitchen-helper. Despite this difficult financial context Lidia managed to get to the most difficult to reach locations in order to join our conferences. One time she even had to travel through the civil war that raged in Yugoslavia to get to our conference on the Greek island of Spetses. Lidia worked for many years in the self-governing collectively run, politically engaged and organically focused Café Zähringer in Zuerich. Later in her life she became a cook and her written work tackled the relationships between nutrition and globalization. Lidia was a truly independent and vibrant spirit, a very radical and dignified human being. She could laugh like a little girl, with a unique timbre that reflected her love of life. She had an incredible wealth of knowledge about plants, herbs and natural healing remedies. We shared a deep and existential commitment to areas of socio-cultural and political life constructed as ‘deviant’ and I will miss her very much. Andrea Beckmann ----I can’t imagine a European Group Conference without Lidia. She has been present at every one I’ve attended, as she actually attended nearly every one there has ever been. As for many others, the EG conference was also Lidia’s annual holiday and she funded herself to come each year for over 40 years. When she met us at the beginning of each conference, her smile always showed how happy she was to be there. Lidia was gentle, quiet and thoughtful, very much her own person. She listened attentively to every speaker and enjoyed being in circles where interesting and informative conversations were taking place. Lidia was a modest person, but knew her own mind and would offer perceptive insights on a range of topics, when asked for her opinion. She travelled independently and always managed to find the best value accommodation in the most interesting parts of town. She also was, in her private life, a pioneer of recycling long before it became fashionable. At the EG conference this year in Nicosia, Lidia was in particularly good spirits. She joined in the conference sessions, the social events, the meal out and the excursion. Lidia’s presence at each conference was a reminder to us all of the important contribution of all who are interested in social justice (not just academics and activists) in the work of the European Group. Ann Singleton ----Lidia’s family stated that instead of flowers people should donate money to an organization that protects old fruit-varieties and that was close to Lidia’s heart: Verein ‘Edelchrüsler’ Kantonale Obstsortensammlung BL, Basellandschaftliche Kantonalbank PC 40-44-0, IBAN CH31 0076 9016 6101 2039 0

 New national/international representatives We have a new national representative for Slovenia: Katja Eman ([email protected]) We also now have a representative for Australasia, reflecting the close links that the European Group has developed with researchers and activists in this region: Paddy Rawlinson ([email protected])  Call for newsletter articles We would like to invite members to contribute short articles (of between 600 and 1000 words) to the monthly newsletter. Suggested streams are as follows but if anyone would like to write something on an area outside these streams which they feel would be of interest to the Group, please feel free to do so. We hope that this will be a good way for members to exchange ideas about their current research topics and/or about any activism they may be involved in. PhD students are particularly encouraged to contribute. Please e-mail articles and suggestions to [email protected] 1) Race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality and disability 2) Immigration, asylum and foreign nationals in the criminal justice system 3) State crime, state violence, terrorism 4) Environmental and wildlife crimes 5) Prison, punishment and penal philosophy 6) Security, protest and anti-capitalist movements 7) Research methods and academic freedom 8) Children, young people and the criminal justice system

For all pretrial detainees the presumption of innocence applies. In spite of this, detention all over Europe generally lasts many months, sometimes even years, the arrest conditions being worse than penal system conditions.” A part of a new research project by the Chair for Criminology of Professor Frieder Dünkel at the University of Greifswald, the legal and practical condition of pretrial detention in Europe are compared. Furthermore, light is shed on the possibilities and risks of transnational cooperation. The project involving five European partner institutions has been coordinated at the Department of Criminology at Ruhr University Bochum in Germany. Its objective was to

raise awareness of sexual victimization, stalking and fear of crime. Female students as (potentially) concerned persons as well as persons working in counselling centers, as equal opportunities representatives or in students committees were the target groups. Recommendations for a series of measures for prevention and intervention were developed at the universities. Further information at: http://www.gendercrime.eu.

Activism This is a plea to members of the European Group to sign the petition in solidarity with our union's branch committee member, Christine Vie (https://www.ucu.org.uk/christinevie). Christine is a valued member of our academic union (UCU) branch committee. She is a member of the union's national executive. She has been a tireless activist on casework for the union, and a thorn in the side of the bullyboy managerialists. Her department has been restructured out of existence, but Christine is the only one out of 9 who was not found suitable redeployment or retraining. The victimisation of a union branch officer is very pointed. Another union rep has just been summarily suspended here this week. We have to draw a line. Your solidarity would be much appreciated. Regards, Scott Poynting ----New criminology forum A new criminology forum is available at https://hub.salford.ac.uk/criminologyforum/ The Forum is designed to (1) generate discussion about criminological matters; (2) act as an educational resource for existing students; and (3) to promote the study of the subject at
