Welcome to the 10th Scientific Congress of the European Resuscitation Council (ERC). This is a very special ERC Congress: not only is this 50th Anniversary of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and the 20th Anniversary of the ERC, but the Congress also showcases the 2010 ERC Guidelines that were published on 18th October. These guidelines are based on the 2010 International Consensus on CPR Science, also published the same day, in the journals Resuscitation and Circulation. The highlights of the 2010 Guidelines are presented on the first day and the implications of the Guideline changes for course instructors will be presented on Friday. There are 9 simultaneous sessions during most of the 3-day congress, which gives the opportunity to cover the full range of topics relating to resuscitation. There are a variety of formats, including pro-con debates and interactive tutorials, as well as traditional lectures. Although the new guidelines are central to the congress, also to be presented will be the latest in resuscitation research from around the world. Over 540 research abstracts were submitted to the Congress – a total of 129 will be presented as free papers; the 12 top-scoring free papers will be presented in two ‘Best of the best’ abstract sessions. There are 319 posters and each of these have been allocated to one of 40 poster tours giving the authors the opportunity for presentation to a pair of judges. There is also a Young Investigator Session comprising the best four abstracts that were submitted to this competition. On day one of the Congress the ERC will be hosting a mass CPR training session for two hundred 13-15 year olds from three schools in Porto. The emphasis will be on providing good quality CPR, an essential step in the Chain of Survival. The closing ceremony will see the award of the first seventy “Fellows of the European Resuscitation Council” for their contribution to resuscitation. There will also be the enrolment of six new honorary members for their pioneering vision and achievements in Resuscitation Medicine.
