Other Student Support Programs
1. Orientation - all first year students are required to attend a one and one-half day summer orientation to meet with their
academic advisers, receive information about the College of Engineering and University services and to plan for their first
semester. A similar orientation program is conducted for transfer students during the summer and during the academic
year.
2. A Counseling Center is operated to assist individuals in gaining a better understanding of themselves. Assistance is
offered to students with concerns such as choosing a career, academic planning, identifying and overcoming educational
difficulties, and coping with stress. Workshops and support groups are offered throughout the year.
3. Summer Transition Program (STP), a summer bridge program enrolls approx. 70 minority students during the second
summer session.
4. Women In Engineering ESCAPE Camp, a week long, residential summer bridge program providing strategies & tips on
success in mathematics, building on computer skills, and helping build an identity with the College of Engineering and NC
State.
5. Undergraduate Studies Tutorial Center provides academic assistance in lower division mathematics, science, and
language classes. Other WIE programs include mentoring, the SWE Chapter and other professional development,
outreach and engagement activities designed for women.
6. Women In Science and Engineering is a living and learning community on campus. The program provides mentoring,
academic support and other services for freshmen and sophomore engineering women each year.
7. Engineering Tutorial Program provides free tutoring for entry level engineering courses for engineering students.

Engineering Information
Student Projects
Student Design Projects Description
The College introduces design concepts and methodologies early in the common first year using case studies and student
projects assigned as part of the introductory engineering course.

The College supports undergraduate student research and design through independent projects and studies, many
funded through the NSF Research Experience for Undergraduates program. All majors require senior level design-based
courses as well as capstone design courses.

Many projects are industrially based and funded. Team based design is the norm and multi-disciplinary projects are
encouraged. Most senior design projects and courses require development of proposals to conduct the project, peer
evaluations, presentation, and final project report submissions.

College Description
Engineering College Description and Special Characteristics
The College offers 18 undergraduate programs, 20 master's programs and 13 Ph.D. programs in engineering and
computer science. Students may combine their baccalaureate program with a second, dual-degree major, or a minor
option, and are encouraged to participate in the co-op program. New freshmen are enrolled in the Engineering
Undesignated Program and must complete freshman-level course requirements in order to matriculate into degree
programs. The University Honors Program provides opportunities for our most creative and talented students to achieve
academic excellence. The University Scholars Program stimulates growth and personal development for outstanding
students who are admitted as freshmen. The Benjamin Franklin Scholars Program is available to students who wish to
earn a dual degree in engineering and the humanities or social sciences. The College offers a five year BS/MS program; a
five year BS/MSM with the College of Management and an off-campus Master of Engineering degree program.
