I’m sure most of us have had the opportunity
to observe the impact that this winter has had
on our turf. I’ve seen a wide array of
conditions on my course from extensive leaf
desiccation to greens that looked perfectly
fine whether due to location or timely
blankets of snow cover. Whatever your
case may be, be thankful that we didn’t have to deal with the extensive periods
of ice cover like our colleagues up north are having to manage. The good news
for all of is April is right around the corner and looks like it will be bring some
seasonal temperatures for us to enjoy…Thank You Lord!

Our Reverse Raffle was another success for the benefit of Scholarship and
Research Programs. Later this year we will be presenting The George Biddulph
and the Legacy Award Scholarships to some deserving students, not to mention
NOGCSA will be partnering with the GCSAA and other Ohio Chapters to provide
funding for research on the use of Giberrellin Synthesis-Inhibiting Plant Growth
Regulators for the Prevent of Acidovorax avenae Infection of Creeping Bentgrass.
Please keep in mind that none of this would be possible without your generosity
and support. I sincerely want to thank each and everyone of you who has been a
part of this great event throughout the years, its because of you we are able to
provide these scholarships and do the research improve our industry. I also,
would like to thank Raintree Country Club for hospitality, food and spirits. The
staff at Raintree C. C. always does an outstanding job! Last but not least, thank
you to Michelle Feher and the entire Board for tireless effort in making this event
a success year after year. Thanks again to everyone!

RECOVERY WILL BE PART OF THE PREPARATION FOR THE SEASON

By Keith Happ, director, North-Central Region
March 19, 2014
It has become clear that for some golf facilities in the
North-Central Region a major factor in preparing for the
upcoming season will be recovery. Despite all efforts to
prevent turf loss during severe winter weather, some of the
weaker grasses may have succumbed to Mother Nature.
Damage to Poa annuaand perennial ryegrass from direct
low-temperature kill or anoxia has already been observed
in portions of the North-Central region.

During a typical spring, superintendents prepare for the
season by aerating soils to stimulate root growth and
promote turf health. Spring is a critical time for cool-season
grasses during which an abundance of natural root growth
occurs. Aerating in the spring takes advantage of this
natural occurrence thereby helping prepare turf for the
stresses of summer.

If turf damage has occurred, turf density must be re-
established to provide an adequate playing surface. To help
re-establish turf populations this spring, aerating damaged
areas can be done to facilitate seed incorporation and help
speed recovery. Commercially available tools, such as the
Job-Saver attachment, are designed to help ensure
maximum seed-to-soil contact. This attachment can be
installed on most types of aeration equipment and is used
to dimple the soil surface prior to seeding. The Job-Saver
attachment is often used following conventional aeration
and topdressing. One common procedure for using the Job-
Saver is as follows: First, core-aerate and topdress to fill the
aeration holes; then apply seed to the damaged areas; and
lastly, use the Job-Saver attachment on the damaged areas.

We know that there has been varying degrees of surface
damage on putting greens, low-lying areas of fairways and
portions of tees in the North-Central region. Reestablishing
surface quality on damaged greens will be the main priority
this spring, and aeration strategies will play a key role in the
recovery process. Please give our office a call if you have
any questions.

(T) Poa annua does not tolerate prolonged periods of
ice cover or extended periods of severe low
temperatures. Northern portions of the North-
Central Region have experienced the full wrath of
the winter conditions. (B) The Job Saver attachment
can be used to maximize seed-to-soil contact and
help speed recovery of damage caused by severe
winter conditions.

SPRING IS COMING!

Here in the Great Lakes region some of us are finally
seeing turf again. This has been one of the harshest
winters we have seen in quite some time. Heavy snows,
wind and extremely cold temperatures have been with
us since November, and while we are having a quick
thaw, more cold is on the way. Now that we are seeing
peeks of sun and warmth, I am sure your golfers are
getting anxious to be out on the golf course. It is this
time of year that superintendents have to make those
tough decisions, such as should the golf course be open
or be closed. At these times, it is important for
superintendents to be great communicators and back up
that communication with information. This information
comes in the form of articles written by the experts and
GCSAA can help you get your hands on those articles.
One of the benefits of being a GCSAA member is the
access you have to the Turfgrass Information Files (TGIF)
housed at Michigan State University. The university staff
has taken all of the articles ever written about turf and
digitized them. Once you are on the TGIF site, just type
in the topic you want to research, such as winter golf or
freeze thaw damage, and you will get a list of articles
available about those topics. TGIF can be accessed in the
Course section of the GCSAA website
at www.gcsaa.org/course/.

We are just back from the very successful GCSAA
Education Conference and Golf Industry Show. The
numbers were up in all categories and this is a very
encouraging sign for the golf industry. If you were not
able to attend, or if you attended and missed some of
the events, many of them have been captured by GCSAA
TV, which you can access at gcsaa.tv. Take a look at the
video of Bill Engvall at the closing session, it is terrific.
Congratulations to the new GCSAA board of directors,
including Keith Ihms, CGCS, who is the new President.
Election results can be viewed on the GCSAA website.
The conclusion of the conference and show usually
signals that the season is close to starting in the Great
Lakes region, which means monthly meetings will be
starting soon. I will be attending as many monthly
meetings as I can and hope to see many members at
every event. If I miss you at an event, and you have a
question or if I can help you with your GCSAA
membership please don't hesitate to contact me. Have a
great spring!
