Winter is just around the corner - and with it will be colder temperatures! Now is the best time to start thinking about ways to save additional money and conserve energy.

Another great tip is to keep your baseboards, and heating elements dust and dirt free. This will not only have a drag on efficiency but who wants to breath bad air. There are many professionals that are available that can clean your home ductwork. SEALING THOSE GAPS Make sure all your doors and windows are tight. Also using locks also provides for a tighter and less draft resistant fix. Caulk or re-caulk around windows and doors. This helps keep the cold out and the heat in. If your caulking is cracked, remove it and reseal with new caulk. If you are using a window unit, remove it for the winter months.

DON’T FORGET TO TURN DOWN YOUR THERMOSTAT! Often people turn their thermostats down and assume that it will save them considerably on their next monthly bill. What’s important is to remember to not turn it too far back. Keep the thermostat on your heating system at the lowest comfortable setting. Recommended : 68 degrees. On the average you consume five percent more energy for every degree it’s set above 68 degrees. During Winter months, health permitting, it’s best to lower the thermostat to between 60 to 65 degrees at night. By keeping your thermostat 10 degrees lower at night you’ll save 10%-20% in heating costs. A great tip is to consider using a programmable thermostat that

INSULATION Check the R Value of insulation in your home. It is recommended by professionals to use a R-30 in the ceiling, R-13 in the walls and R-11 in the floor for maximum comfort and energy efficiency. Adding additional insulation is a very low cost and effective way to improve the energy efficiency in your home.
