Dyslexia Tutoring of Utah November Newsletter

Wow, I can hardly believe that it is now November. I really don t know where October went, but I think a lot of it had to do that I was extremely busy! I am officially moved and in to our new place. It was stressful and I hope that I will never have to do this again, but I said that last time I moved! I have just spent a week in Phoenix at the annual Dyslexia Conference. It was so good, and I can t wait to share some of the things that I learned. There is a lot of recent research out on dyslexia, and the IDA (International Dyslexia Association) is right on top of it all. We will be holding another Parent Workshop in January, where I will share with you some of this recent research. There are a few things that I want to make you aware of right now though. I took a class on all of the current software available to our students, and I was surprised that many of these things are FREE. One site that I would like you to take a look at is www.earobics.com/gamegoo. It is FREE online games to help with phonemic awareness and language skills. It has all levels, so check it out. Please also don t forget to go to BOOKSHARE.org, where you can download for FREE books. Another tidbit that I did not know, if you have Microsoft word, you can go into tools, and then to speech and it will read to you the text! Very COOL! Someone did say in the conference that it had to be the older version of word though! There is also www.screenreader.net, www.readplease.com, and www.naturalreader.com, that are all downloadable and for FREE. If you have an I-PHONE or I-TOUCH there are also a ton of APPS that you can download that will help your dyslexic child immensely. With the holidays coming up, I wanted to make you aware of the days that we will be closed. We will be closed November 25th and 26th for Thanksgiving and then again December 23-January 2nd. We traditionally close for the Christmas season to give all of us a

break, and to have some time with our families. Please mark these times on your calendar. We are trying very hard to get up a parent group that would like to look at and explore the possibilities of how we can best make the community and schools aware of dyslexia. We need your input and help and so we are asking for volunteers to be on this parent committee. Deanna Nunley, one of our parents here at the center, has already looked at some things, but wants your help! If you would be interested in helping with this, please let me know. You can e-mail me, or just let me know when you come in to the center for tutoring. I will forward your name and number on to Deanna, and she will be contacting you. PLEASE HELP US SPREAD THE WORD, so that we can get the accommodations and help that our children deserve. Our writing workshops are ready to begin. We are forming groups right now, and need to know how many students we are looking at. The classes will be taught by Courtney Campbell, our writing specialist, and they will be held on Friday afternoons. She has some great ideas and she will be sharing her expertise with your children. Dysgraphia is an area that many of your children struggle with and these workshops will help strengthen and improve on this weakness. The cost for these 8 week workshops is $100.00. There will be no reimbursement for classes missed and the tuition will need to be paid for before they begin. We are hoping to start the 2nd week in November, so please fill out the form below, so that we can divide the children into age groups and times. Well, that is about it for the month. We are still in need of a few more toys in our play area, and could always use a box of Kleenex for the upcoming winter season. Thanks Have a wonderful month I am truly grateful to all of you!
