Charitable Overhead is Not Evil Common dogma in the non-profit world is that overhead costs are a necessary evil, and that the less there is, the better, assuming funds are being allocated directly to the cause . Non-profits can brag that 99% of their expenses go to their programs, delighted that they fit into the mold of having overhead less than 20% of their total budget. However, this leads to an obvious stigma, with potential donors questioning the ethics of the organization. Even though non-profit CEO's make considerably less money than the private sector, there is still a gray area in the overhead cost conversation. Sure, high overhead can mean wasted money, but it may also mean program expansion, infrastructure upgrades, new staff, member incentives, improved marketing, improved quality or new innovations. Not all organizations should be treated the same and can benefit from a range of different overhead investments. Similar to the business world you have to spend money to make money and it's important for donors and board members to see the potential of the investment. ERYC says Farewell to Americorps VISTA, Lucy Cummings
Unfortunately this month we have to say goodbye to a member of our ERYC team, Lucy Cummings. Although it is sad to see her leave, we feel very fortunate to have worked with such a dedicated young woman and to experience her professional growth in her role as Marketing & Special Projects Coordinator. Lucy joined our team last November as an Americorps VISTA, committing one year of service to improve the issues that burden Eagle County. Lucy has undoubtedly played a major role in growing the organization and its capacity to tackle the major issues affecting youth. Some of her accomplishments at ERYC include working collaboratively with Head Start to enhance and produce three editions of the Eagle Valley Resource Directory, co-producing the spring Family Jam and Plan to connect local families with youth services and increasing our social media presence through a strategic marketing plan. We have no doubt that Lucy will continue to thrive and prove herself as a valuable asset, positively impacting her community. Please join us in wishing her the best luck and success in all of her future endeavors.

over and over. Videos can be either 6 straight seconds or several clips spliced together. With such a short window to record content, the level of creativity is endless. The creation of these videos is challenging, requiring precision and has become a sort of art form. From the hilarious pranks to short animations, there is something for everybody, including youth organizations. While some may question the educational merit of such technology, we should not discredit it's potential for working with youth. Here are some ways you can incorporate Vine into your organization. 1. Create health behavior messaging, exploring important issues. Kids can create their own videos. 2. Put together a Vine Film Festival for a group activity and vote for the best videos 3.
