More Long-term Parking for Ballina Passengers
Ballina Byron Gateway Airport is ready to deliver again on its passenger promise to “get
there sooner” with the opening of the new car park extension for long-term parking.
The contract for the Construction of the Car Park & Associated Infrastructure - Ballina
Byron Gateway Airport was appointed in November 2014. Construction has been
proceeding well and completion is expected at the end of March.
The new car park will provide a further 143 car parking spaces and special rates will
be available for long-term parking such as 3 days and 2 nights for just $30. Access is very
convenient with the airport terminal door just a few metres away.
The new car park will feature security fencing, landscaping, paving, bright lighting and

Tweed Club Recognised for
Outstanding Staff

Lismore Receives Funds for Energy
Saving Projects

Murwillumbah Services Memorial
Club has recently been recognised
by the Fair Work Commission
(FWC) for its exceptional and
innovative approach to providing
benefits to its staff.
In
a
recent
project
commissioned by the FWC, the
Club was one of only a handful of
businesses nationwide identified
as providing innovative provisions
in its Enterprise Agreement that it
has negotiated with its staff.
The Project Report particularly
focused on the Club’s staff
training and education provisions
in its most recent Enterprise
Agreement. The Enterprise
Agreement was negotiated

Two solar farms and a bio-gas plant will be built in the Lismore area
while a study will be carried out on how to take the entire Tyalgum
village “off the grid.”
The energy saving projects are being funded as part of the NSW
Government’s Growing Community Energy (GCE) grants.
NSW parliamentary secretary for Renewable Energy Leslie Williams
yesterday announced that Lismore community groups would receive
$95,000 for the three projects

between management and the
staff of the Club, and the Club’s
achievements were highlighted
by the FWC project.
In the Project report, the Club’s
CEO, Guy Diven highlighted
the benefits that the enhanced
training provisions were able to
deliver. Mr. Diven said he believed
the clause had helped the club
achieve its goal of attracting and
retaining quality staff and this has
also had a significant impact on
customer service.

Regional Small Businesses Reach New
Heights
A series of new interactive
workshops offered by the NSW
Government are reaching the
regions to help small businesses.
Mullumbimby is one of the
first communities to benefit from
the specialist workshops that
cover a range of topics that will
help them address local business
issues.
“The NSW Liberals and
Nationals are ensuring small
businesses in regional NSW are
well supported with specialised
programs and practical advice,”
Minister for Small Business, Mr
Barilaro said.
“We know that access to
specialist services can be difficult

06

Autumn 2015

for small businesses in regional
NSW, so we are closing that gap
by bringing business workshops
that are relevant and useful to
each community,” Mr Barilaro
said.
Participants will be given the
opportunity to have a one-onone session with the specialist
presenter to gain valuable
insights and actions to address
their individual business issues.
The following workshops
have been scheduled: Women
in Business workshops &
networking sessions Wednesday
29 April & Wednesday 20 May.
For more information visit:
www.smallbusiness.nsw.gov.au.

Mrs Williams said that two GCE grants of $40,000 would be used
to develop solar farms and a bio-gas plant, as well as a $15,000
GCE grant for a feasibility and technical study of how to increase
Tyalgum village’s energy resilience through innovative technologies
and solutions.
‘A $40,000 GCE grant from the NSW Government will
allow Starfish Initiatives to build two 100kW solar farms – in
partnership with Lismore City Council and community investment
– which will produce enough energy to power the equivalent of 30
average NSW homes.
This will be the first Council-community partnership in Australia
to build a community owned and run solarfarm, with the GCE seed
funding helping to raise investment from community financiers,
who will manage the project with Lismore City Council and partner
organisations.
Mrs Williams said the second grant of $40,000 would assist
Nimbin Neighbourhood and Information Centre to build a smallscale bio-gas project in a local milk and cheese producing dairy farm.
The project will be used as a business model for further
development of two community-owned bio-gas hubs in
Murwillumbah and Casino.

Excellence in the Clarence

Last Year’s Business of the Year, Harwood Marine

Chambers in the Clarence Valley
are encouraging businesses to
realise their dreams by entering
the Clarence Valley Business
Excellence Awards
To enter businesses need to
complete an application form
answering ten questions about
the business. This is a valuable
process for assessing current
standards and procedures,
looking back at what has been
achieved and crystallising plans
for the future.
“Entering the CVBEA gave
us the opportunity to look at
our business with fresh eyes.
Rather than just the day to day
and week to week outlook,
we had to think about where
we are headed and how to
achieve this.” Waterview Motel,
Maclean
Employment of staff is one
of the highest expenses for any
business and so it’s crucial to all

be working toward the same
goals toward business success.
Using the CVBEA entry form as
a team building exercise is an
effective way of clarifying what
those goals are, giving the staff
a voice in the business planning
process, giving and receiving
feedback, all of which naturally
reinforces the importance of
team work and raises staff
morale.
“Entering the awards is an
amazing way for a team to
celebrate their successes and
to note their achievements. It
helped crystallise the vision and
philosophy of our business for
every team member. The whole
process was a significant team
event.” Fresh Dental Care,

Entries open on 1 April and
close on 12 June. Find all the

Six Business-Critical Rules for Managing
Your Business

Susan Andrews, Accounting and Management, North Coast TAFE Lismore

W

ith the majority of businesses on the North Coast of NSW
being small-to-medium enterprises serving fairly ‘thin’
markets on their doorsteps, a significant number of those
businesses struggle to make it past the critical first five years.
Clearly, marketing and customer service are business-critical
activities, but effective financial management is often overlooked as
the third cornerstone to business success.
As a Certified Practising Accountant and teacher in accounting
and management I believe that there are half-a-dozen financial
management essentials for the modern North Coast business.
First, see your budget as having three functions or stages; as a
planning tool, as a monitoring tool and as a reporting tool. Too often
the budget is just “set and forget”….until it’s too late.
Second, understand the relationship between your profit and
cash-flow over the year; how your below-the-line costs can come
up and bite you, and how a cash flow forecast can map those shifts.
Third, achieve profitability by focussing on increasing revenue (the
sky could be the limit), not decreasing costs, which are finite…and
make sure that you price your service or product based on its value to
your customers, not to a revenue target or the competition’s prices.
Fourth, set realistic financial goals. Over-ambitious goals, although
admirably entrepreneurial, can backfire. Business partners, financing
partners and even staff will start to question your credibility if you
consistently undershoot your targets and goals.

Fifth, separate your cash flow plans for short-term items from your
plans for long-term items - like capital expenditure. The best way to
sensibly service long-term cash requirements is securing financing
when your track-record is at its best and when you don’t actually
require it…as many business people are aware, banks are more
positive about lending to you when the balance sheet is healthy.
Lastly, try not to do it all yourself. Pay a competent bookkeeper to
come in every month, because it will be more efficient for you and
add another brain to the business. If you decide to go it alone, at
least get some high quality training in these six essentials.
If any of these essentials are gobbledegook to you, then you
need some training. You can either acquire the knowledge of these
financial must haves yourself, or you might have someone on staff
who would be perfect. Or you could need to recruit.
Whichever way you go, you can discuss customised accredited
training with TAFE or we may be able to identify a recent TAFE
graduate who would solve your immediate need.

How to solve the financial
challenges for your business
You started your business bec
ause you wanted to
run your own show, and now it’s
running you.
It’s time to take back control and
the best (but least
popular) place to start is with you
r finances.
Where to start? Acquire more
knowledge yourself?
Train up someone on staff who
would be perfect?
Or perhaps recruit?
Whichever way you go, North
Coast TAFE can
provide customised accredited
training or help you
identify a recent TAFE graduate
who might solve
your immediate need.

First Job Gold

Tony Bowden, Epic Employment Service Inc

L

anding a first job is rewarding not only for the
jobseeker but also the employer. Local businessman
and owner of Hungry Jacks in Tweed Heads,
Matthew Fraser, knows this only too well.
For the past few years Matthew has been working
with EPIC as a ‘hope giver’ giving young people an
opportunity to experience the workforce.
"They say there is nothing more rewarding than
having a job. For me, it's also the ability to give
someone a job, and in many cases their first job"
Matthew said.
Part of an employment specialist’s job is to match
jobseekers skills and qualities with the needs of employers
to help them thrive as a productive and profitable enterprise.
By using a Government funded employment service often
these services are at no cost to the employer, saving both time
and money.
As an employer Matthew needs a good fit for his business, he
provides full training and needs staff with the ability to take new
skills on board and be able to quickly switch from one task to
another as required. He recalls a recent positive experience:
“One of the young people that EPIC referred is Isaac. It has been
a pleasure providing Isaac with a meaningful and rewarding job as
part of the Hungry Jack’s team at Tweed Heads. Isaac has gained
many skills including customer service, cash handling and food
preparation. In the short period of his employment, Isaac has shown
he is a real asset to the business and an integral team player.”
When asked, Isaac stated that his interaction with EPIC had given

him the skills and confidence
to approach employers
which led to Isaac being
employed with Hungry
Jacks where he “felt
good”.
Isaac’s interaction
with customers has
been so positive that he
was recently awarded
the companies ‘Customer
Service’ award.
Matthew, is extremely
proud of this outcome and is
now preparing Isaac for full time
work. He commented on the support
from his employment service:
"Debbie and her team at EPIC are committed to finding the right
job for the right person. It's a win for the employer and a win for
the jobseeker,” he said
An employer and employee both benefit from continued support
and communication in the workplace. The support provided by EPIC
includes helping jobseekers to access transport and training, update
or get new qualifications and to purchase work related clothes and
equipment.
If you are an employer looking for staff or if your staff member
is at risk of job loss due to disability, injury or illness, please contact

Workplace Bullying and Harassment

Greg Arnold, Effective Workplace Solutions

I

n September 2006, Brodie Panlock
a 19 year old waitress at a café in
Melbourne jumped from a four story
carpark. A few days later she died
from the injuries sustained. It was
subsequently discovered during the
Coroners Inquiry into her death,
that Brodie had been the victim of
constant and sustained workplace
bullying. Bullying which included
name calling, belittling, the pouring
of fish oil over her and her belongings
and placing rat poison in her bag. The
result was that the café owner and 3 of
her colleagues were fined tens of thousands
of dollars for failing to provide a safe workplace.
Brodie’s death arguably became the catalyst and the ignition point
for the authorities in Victoria and nationwide to tackle bullying in the
workplace. It resulted in “Brodie’s law” which made bullying in the
workplace a criminal offence in Victoria; a Productivity Commission
Inquiry; a Report on the matter to the Federal Government in 2011;
and the Government introducing the Anti-Bullying provisions into the
Fair Work Act in January 2014. Workplace bullying and harassment is
now a hot topic and is and should be at the forefront of employer’s
agendas. There are now several jurisdictional avenues available for
bullying victims to pursue claims. So this issue has now grown in
prominence over the past 5 to 10 years and it is no longer a case of
the issue being “hidden” within the provisions of the relevant State

workplace health and safety legislation. It is a real issue and is
a consequence of what was tolerated and acceptable in the
workplace 20 or 30 years ago, that is no longer accepted or
tolerated by today’s society.
In addition to the Brodie case, there have been countless
other cases in the various courts that have resulted in
fines, or compensation in the hundreds of thousands of
dollars. In many of these cases, regardless of whether or
not the employer was aware of the bullying conduct, the
employer was held vicariously liable for the actions of its
staff.
There are however a number of pro-active measures that
businesses can take to prevent bullying, or at least mitigate
against claims of bullying and harassment.
• Ensure that you have a comprehensive bullying and harassment
policy in place
• Educate your staff and management on what is (and what isn’t)
bullying and harassment
• Education of your management as to how best to handle claims
of bullying and harassment
• Ensure all claims of bullying and harassment are properly
investigated
• Investigate prudent ways of dealing with the claims and the staff
concerned.
If you would like further information on this issue or assistance in
implementing some of the strategies as outlined above, please do
not hesitate to call Effective Workplace Solutions on 1300 794 001

What Happened to the Happy Holiday?
Gail Fuller, Byron Coastal Real Estate
have to say the world is certainly changing. I
remember the old days where you would arrive
on holiday with the family and enjoy relaxing and
getting away from it all. It was always simple and
easy and we never worried about much as long as
we all had each other.
Today the reality is very different.
We see guests arrive very stressed, angry and
generally unhappy. Let me make a point here, not
all guests are like this but it is becoming a common
theme.
The pressure of every day life definitely shows
on their faces and by their attitude. Some guests
complain about all manner of things, like the blinds
being 3 inches from the floor and not completely
to the ground. “The ocean is too loud in our
beachfront property.” “The carpet snake could
kill my whole family.” “I don’t have Austar!” These are just some
complaints.
Some guests call every day to complain about things very small
and trivial. What they miss is the opportunity they have for a weekend
or a week to spend with their family and friends, connecting and
sharing time together.
How have we got to the point that the materialist, stimulating
devices have become more important than just being with each
other?
Maybe it’s just that they are asked to finally stop and that is so
confronting, they create a drama to keep feeling alive.

I

www.nrbm.com.au

I also notice there is a lot more bullying behavior to staff, especially
if the guests decide they do not wish to stay at the chosen location
for whatever reason. There is a pushy attitude of wanting to get
what they want, even if it is unreasonable.
Society as a whole seems to want compensation and expectations
are becoming very high. It’s fair enough to have high expectations,
but should it come at the price of dismissing family or friends for the
sake of being right? I think not.
Byron Bay certainly gives visitors the opportunity to stop and take
a breather, if that’s what they truly want. With the beautiful beaches,
swimming, snorkeling, diving, bush walking and ballooning, it is the
perfect place to spend quality time with friends and family.

Opening Your Development Consent
Mystery Box

Jonathan Marquet, McCartney Young Lawyers

U

nless you’re a town planner or a developer,
the terms “DA” or “development
consent” are probably not going to float
your boat.
But if you’re in business, the question of
development consent is something that you
need to consider at some point. It’s probably in
a mystery box at the back of your office – you may
be wondering about what could be inside but have
been too afraid to open it.
It’ll come as no surprise that (usually) to put land
to certain uses or build certain things on land, you need
consent from your local council. This is as true for a developer
seeking to subdivide farmland, as it is for a small business running
a shop on the main street. And it applies regardless of whether you
own the land or have a lease over it.
So have you checked whether development consent is required
to run your business? Maybe council issued a consent sometime in
the distant past. Is your business meeting the requirements set out
in that development consent?
Particular uses such as restaurants, eateries and retail shops, can
attract conditions that relate to how much parking is required and
disability access. These could be a financial disaster (or attract a fine
or prosecution from council) waiting to happen if you don’t check
what is required in your situation.

Enough of the scary talk. What you might
not have thought about, is that there could
be some unique opportunities available for
your business. Maybe your development
consent contains additional approval for a
related use – such as commercial offices or
a small café or community facility? This could
be scope for a better yield on your investment
or an opportunity to grow your business
through associating with a complementary
venture.
It is important to note that not all uses of land
require council consent (and many only require minimal council
consent). You might have had a great idea for how to engage with
a new market or expand your existing operations but thought that
getting council approval would be too costly and time consuming.
Things like having an ATM installed, changing uses from an
office to a shop and having a mobile coffee cart in your showroom,
are options that may involve no consent from council (or minimal
consent). Of course, you would need to obtain advice as to what
options are available to your business, depending on your particular
use and location and type of building.
There may be ghosts in your development consent mystery box or
there may be hidden treasures. Maybe now’s the time to have a look
in the box to see what may lie ahead for your business.

Getting the Right Fit

Soraya Barnham, Complete Uniform Solutions
n many of our past articles we have discussed getting the right
uniform branding colours to work back to corporate branding,
and finding a reliable supplier and decorator of Workwear and
Uniforms.
So moving forward and assuming that all staff have agreed and
found the garment colour and fabric they like for their uniform the
next step is working on the ‘right fit’. If your uniforms do not fit
properly then they will not portray the image you want. All staff
should be correctly sized for their polos, shirts and suiting.
An expert uniform supplier will be able to guide you on this and
provide a fitting service. It’s always worth getting an on-site fitting
or fitting range samples so staff can get the right size.
Many ranges offer a variety of fits/
styles in the same fabric to enable
all staff to find uniform
garments that suit their
specific body shape.
We are constantly
working to enhance
the ranges we
offer. This is why
our new range of
ladies pants for
winter has been
developed. Three
styles for three
different
body
shapes all in the

I

form of a trusted black pant - a uniform essential that never goes
out of style.
The ‘Perfect Pant’, offers three body fits in an everyday, classic
style that will keep you looking professional – and comfortable.
The pants feature
• low profile front and back pockets – useful and flattering
• wicker waistband to help support and flatten the tummy
• mid-rise so not too low and not too high and always work
appropriate
• lengthening straight leg shape that looks great with heels or
flats
• premium 4 way stretch fabric for superior comfort and less
creasing – easycare
• generous 5cm hem allowance for optional added length
Ladies shirting options are available in action-back styling, semifitted classic cuts and fitted shapes.
There are also various fits for male customers, these include
European Fit shirts, regular, stout and long pants.
As stockists and resellers for Biz Collection and Bongardi, our
staff can develop unique uniform branding and wardrobe range
planning that includes mid-rise ladies work pants, high waisted
skirts and hipster styles. Building the uniform colourways for shirts
around suitable fits for staff we have also uniquely developed
standard shirting fabric style garments that are complimented by
contemporary styled tops.
For the widest range of corporate colourways and fits that
mean your staff will look their best and your brand is well reflected

One Thing Great Companies Do to
Maximize their Time and Profits...
Jamie Cunningham

I

'm guessing if I asked you if you'd like more time and better
profitability you'd nod your head and answer with a resounding 'of
course'! I mean who wouldn't right? Well what if I told you there is
one foundational ingredient that is the basis of achieving that, and it is
the one ingredient great companies know about and use ... would you
like to know what that is?
OK enough with the suspense...
It is choosing your customer. Now before you rush off and say ... 'yeh
I know that', let me ask you to write out, in detail, a description of your
ideal customer. Write it out as a single avatar for each customer segment
you believe you serve. How clear are you really? You see great companies
know in explicit detail, who their Ideal Customers are. They think about
them as individuals not groups of people.
Let me give you an example. Meet Rob. Rob is an ex-Proctor and
Gamble MBA executive who decided he wanted to work for himself
vs 'the-man' and now owns and operates a very successful Business
Brokerage firm. Rob is a driven guy, he's smart, educated and brings
credibility to his role as a broker and as a result had some quick success
in building his firm.
After some time though, he found himself working harder and
harder, and yes the income was also increasing but the effort to get it
seemed to be getting out of balance.
When Rob engaged me, one of the first activities I had him do was
write out a description of his ideal customer. He did it and it was one
sentence long. I asked him to go back and think about the best client
he has had to date and write as detailed a description about that person
as possible.
The result was remarkably different. The second description included
the client’s values, his interests, family profile, things he likes and the
things he fears. It described his experience in business, and what was
important to him after the sale of his business. Once we understood his
ideal client it was very easy to start designing his business to more closely

14

align with this person.
Next I had Rob go through his client list for the past 3 years and
identify those who most closely matched the description he had created.
Once he did it, we added up the income generated from those clients
vs the others and you guessed it ... the result was astounding. Over
75% of his income had come from a small group of 'ideal customers'.
And the kicker was these customers were also the easiest for him to
service. They were more sophisticated, had better advisers and valued
his service more.
The reality is if he had only serviced these clients over the past 3yrs,
yes his income would have been a bit lower (maybe) but he would have
had A LOT more time. More time perhaps to service more of those clients
or time to spend with his family.
The second lesson here is; that Rob knew this stuff from his Proctor
and Gamble days, yet through the ‘busyness’ of running his business
he’d lost sight of some of the basics.
How often do you come up for air to assess how well you are covering
the basics? Taking some time to look at the big picture can be some of
the most valuable time you spend in your business.
When most people are asked to focus on a single customer they get
extremely nervous. They feel like they are excluding a massive part of the
market and subsequently minimising their opportunity for sales. In reality
the exact opposite is true. It is almost impossible to excel in servicing a
wide range of customers. Everyone has different needs and values.
Decide who you are going to be 'best in class' at servicing and who's
values most closely align with what your business offers and how you
do business. It may be more than one category of customer but it is not
more than five.
Have fun with it, and enjoy the freedom this focus will bring you.
Jamie is an advisor to business owners who want to step up
and build great companies without sacrificing their life doing it.

Are You Prepared for Opportunity?
Clayton Oates, QA Business

T

his article is probably more for the ABC’s
(Accountants / Bookkeepers / Consultants)
out there who provide services to those of
us in Small Business land. Although business
owners and/or operators are welcome to read
on for a sneak peek into the future services that
ABCs will be offering you and your business,
and perhaps not before time too!
But first some philosophy - Lucius Seneca
(first century philosopher and tutor to the
young Nero) has a famous quote: “Luck
is what happens when Preparation meets
Opportunity”.
We have been brought up to believe
business success is achieved through hard
work, customer service and going the extra
mile, not really on Luck. So what about this notion of preparedness
meeting opportunity? How applicable is it right now to us - the Trusted
Advisors who champion the small business community?
As ABCs we are all facing an Inflection Point (Opportunity) which has
the potential to finally deliver on the long standing promise of providing
true Value Added Business Advisory services and solutions to our clients.
However as Seneca put it, Success (Luck) is reserved for those of us who
are truly Prepared.
So what are Business Advisory Services? And how can we best prepare
for this unique opportunity?
Business Advisory Services are not compliance work e.g. Tax

Returns, BAS Preparation, Payroll End of Year,
Software Conversions, Compulsory Audits
or providing Reactive advice requested by
the client.
We have all heard the doomsday predictions
that ‘Compliance is Dead’ and whilst I don’t
fully subscribe to this fear driven notion, I do
believe that Compliance work is fast becoming a
commodity, the value of which is being eroded. I
don’t meet too many young budding ABCs that
want to spend all of their time in the compliance
world. They're keen to move through this level
as quickly as possible to get to the real fun and
meaningful roles which are found in the Business
Advisory space.
Business Advisory has not just arrived with “The Cloud” (Take it
from me this really does feel like Groundhog Day from 1994 with the
Windows, Desktop PC explosion). Now more than ever the tools are
becoming available to realise the opportunity. It is important to remember
that whilst technology is certainly the Enabler, it is not the solution…...
YOU are the Solution! (always have been). It is your willingness to take the
available technology and use it in a way that achieves the overall Goal of
delivering true Value Added Business Advisory services that clients want.
What if you are not prepared for this opportunity - what do you do?
Well my advice to you is to do whatever it takes to get prepared and
quickly!

Richmond Valley,
Where Business
Happens

R

ichmond Valley Council is embracing change and planning
for a future which ensures a fantastic quality of life for its
residents.
Playing a variety of roles council aims to deliver programs and
services for the community and works with local, regional, state and
federal partners to achieve the best community outcomes.
In addition to its important community role Richmond Valley
Council also recognises its core responsibility to create an
environment in which the overall local economy thrives. It is taking
a leadership role in ensuring the Richmond Valley is in a position
to foster employment creation and business sustainability, after all
business cannot succeed in a community which does not thrive.
This process has already started with Council already assisting
to break down the barriers to investment by putting initiatives in
place which help create opportunity and getting rid of the red tape
wherever possible.
It has committed to process residents' requests and applications
quickly, be prudent in the administration of the regulations, reduce
the cost of doing business, (particularly up-front costs) and make
sure it is there when it is needed and take a back seat when not
required.
People often ask what a region needs to be successful? The
answer is often a complicated and convoluted one, however, when
it comes to economic success Richmond Valley ticks all the boxes in
the key major business indicators including:
• Good road, rail and air connections
• Good digital connectivity
• Competitively priced land and infrastructure
• Land that’s able and ready to be developed
• A solid, well-trained and reliable workforce
• Great living environment, with impressive social and sporting
facilities
Most importantly, Richmond Valley Council is committed to
promoting the area, supporting business and community and

market)

sense of community

• Urban Land Release Strategy
Industry
Richmond Valley is a leader
in primary industries and food
manufacturing enterprises, with
the NSW Sugar Mill located at

Broadwater, and Richmond
Dairies, Riverina Stockfeeds,
and the Northern Rivers
Co-operative Meat Company at Casino.
This is supported by a number of agricultural
businesses located across the Richmond
Valley specialising in grain, dairy, beef,
fruits, vegetables, coffee, timber and
tea tree. There is also a healthy retail
and tourism sector, growing creative
industries and building and construction
industry sectors. Along with the potential
for new energy sources and transport, it is
the work ethic of Richmond Valley people,
consistently mentioned by employers,
that provides a distinct advantage for
business and industry investment.
Sense of Place
A
strong
sense
of
community and a feeling of
belonging are experienced in the
Richmond Valley. There is passion held
by residents toward the abundance of
natural assets and the lifestyle which
a coastal and rural existence provides.
This, combined with affordability and
future opportunity, reflects ‘a sense
of place’.
The People
The Richmond Valley is home to
a diverse community which spreads
from the coastline at Evans Head to
the rural heartland of Casino over a
total expanse of about 3050 square

kilometres. The sense of
community is enhanced
by the friendliness of the
people and the acceptance
of all who call the Richmond
Valley home.
Natural assets
The Pacific Ocean
splendour of Evans Head
is cradled by both the
Broadwater and Bundjalung
national parks. Further
inland, the deep broad
water of the Richmond
River flows through villages
of Woodburn, Coraki and
Tatham. The Richmond River travels through the rural vista
of Casino and along with the agricultural abundance of
surrounding villages, takes in views of World Heritagelisted national parks and forms part of the North
Coast bioregion.
Cultural Significance
The Richmond Valley, like many Northern Rivers
communities, has a significant indigenous cultural
heritage and embraces this connection with the
original custodians of the land. Nonindigenous
heritage is also highly appreciated in the Richmond
Valley by residents and visitors alike, with support for
sites such as the Evans Head Memorial Aerodrome, listed
as a State Heritage item, along with other agricultural
and pioneering sites. Additionally, Casino’s Art
Deco buildings are well known as some of
the most significant examples of this
architectural style in NSW.
With all this and more there is
plenty to attract business both
large and small to the valley,
which is why business is
happening in Richmond Valley.

Helping Business Succeed

S

ignarama Casino is a full service sign centre
for the Northern Rivers. Jason and Annette
Goulding joined the Signarama brand in 2011
as a way to diversify from their existing business. By
becoming customer focused, quality driven and trade
trained they have grown to a level that is recognised
within the Signarama network as impressive.
From their base in Centre Street, Casino, the team
of 8 cover Grafton to Pottsville including Lismore,
Ballina, Byron Bay, Tenterfield, Glen Innes and all over
the Northern Rivers. If you can’t get to them they
will travel to you for a no-obligation sign quotation.
The community involvement is what really stands
out as they support a number of community events
and sponsorship throughout the Richmond Valley
Community.
Evan Foster National Director Signarama Australia said of Jason
and Annette “They are one of our best franchisees we have, their
passion for the business and providing creative solutions is in a
league of its own.”
One of the things that sets them apart is their commitment to the
business both personally and financially. Many franchisees start with
a small signage set up, however in Casino Signarama you’ll find all
the technology to give you an amazing choice of signage solutions.
This investment in infrastructure enables Jason to manage the jobs in
house, keeping good quality control and means they can complete
the job quicker than subcontracting elements outside.
They can tackle signage jobs of any size from local corner shops
through to multinationals and to each job they bring their creative

18

drive to provide innovative
solutions. An example of which
is a recently won contract
for a local company where
they went the extra mile and
mocked up some solutions
so the decision makers could
physically see the offered
solutions. This made it simpler
for the client to understand the
options available. It’s this kind
of commitment that has seen
Jason and Annette make such
a success of the business.
Although they have only
been in the group for 3 and a half years they have been recognised
with product quality awards and have reached some very substantial
milestones with in the network. Jason is now a mentor for other
franchisees and is on the advisory councils for regional stores, which
is a great achievement in such a short time.
Jason comments: “Our job is to make other businesses a success
by making their signage really work for their business. From A
frames and banners through to trade displays and vehicle wraps
we can tackle any job and we enjoy handling a complex project. We
like to think your business is in safe hands with our team.”
As a full-service sign centre they can manage the whole
process from design, manufacture, installation and project
management of all types of signage. For more information visit:

SEO Reliability

A

Gold Coast industry leader has
launched its wholesale services
business for digital and marketing
agencies this month, taking back-office
burdens from them so they can get back to
adding real marketing value for their clients.
SEO Resellers Australia provides Australia’s
digital, marketing and IT businesses with a
quality service infrastructure that removes
many of the generic, time consuming tasks
which are a major cost in the provision of
marketing services.
Businesses will be big winners of this
innovation as their marketing and creative teams can focus on
adding real value in promoting them, rather than in completing the
mundane, repetitive process tasks.
CEO of SEO Resellers Australia Damian Papworth has brought 15
years of industry experience in the creation of this support system.
“From my decade as the owner of a digital agency, I understand
where all the points of pain are for businesses in this very competitive
industry” he said.
“My inspiration for this business was to take away those points of
pain, so our digital business owners, our marketing consultants and
our creative geniuses can get back to their passions, which naturally
is also where they add real value to their own clients”
“Digital agencies can save up to 90% of the time it takes to
fulfil many standard online marketing services with our white label
platform, which means they can spend this time rather to really focus
on their clients”

Led by Mr Papworth’s long term business
partner and MD Simon Woodfull, SEO
Resellers Australia now fills a vital place in the
evolution of the digital marketing industry in
Australia.
“Agencies in the industry today rely
so heavily on offshore support for their
businesses” says Mr Woodfull.
“Which is fine, except it is exceptionally
hard to control the services output by these
businesses, which creates a real issue when
you are trying to provide a quality, consistent
result in marketing for your clients.”
“Bringing these support services under the governance and
quality regime of an incorporated Australian business ensures these
risks cease to be an issue.”
IT and outsourcing entrepreneur Scott Linden Jones recently
estimated up to 280,000 Queensland white collar jobs would
be outsourced to the Philippines alone over the next ten years,
illustrating the real need for proper quality control and corporate
governance in this regard.
The SEO Resellers Australia offering is ideal to a range of
different agencies supporting Australian businesses including web
development businesses, digital marketing businesses, graphic
designers, PR agencies, IT companies and Printing and Signage
businesses. There are affordable packages for any size of business
or budget.

Hazardous Manual Tasks
Stephen Paul, Safety and Fire Education

H

azardous manual tasks are a part of many activities we complete
in our workplace every day, however these seemingly innocuous
jobs can lead to serious and long term injury. In this article
we examine the risks associated with hazardous manual tasks and
employer’s responsibilities to provide appropriate controls and training.
What is a hazardous manual task?
A hazardous manual task, as defined in the WHS Regulations,
means a task that requires a person to lift, lower, push, pull,
carry or otherwise move, hold or restrain any person, animal
or thing involving one or more of the following:
• repetitive or sustained force
• high or sudden force
• repetitive movement
• sustained or awkward posture
• exposure to vibration.
These factors (known as characteristics
of a hazardous manual task) directly stress
the body and can lead to injury and
musculoskeletal disorders.
What are musculoskeletal disorders?
Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) cover a wide range of inflammatory
and degenerative conditions affecting the muscles, tendons, ligaments,
joints, peripheral nerves, and supporting blood vessels.
This can occur in two ways:
1.
Occur suddenly as a result of a single forceful action like
pulling, moving or lifting an object, actions causing overexertion or
through a slip, trip or fall.

» Workplace Safety Training
» Fire & Emergency Response
» Fire Warden Training
» Fire Safety Officer Training
» Evacuation Procedures & Diagrams
» Apply First Aid
» Perform CPR
» Hazardous Manual Handling
» Infection Control
» Workplace Health & Safety

2. Develop over a longer period as symptoms associated with minor
tissue injuries are ignored, eventually resulting in a more serious
injury. Injuries suffered by workers doing repetitive work and/or
work of a similar nature could also fall into this category.
Your workplace health and safety responsibilities.
An employer must:
1. Identify any hazardous manual tasks in their workplace
2. Assess the probability of an injury occurring and the degree of risk
and level of harm that it represents to their workforce
3. Eliminate the risk so far as is reasonably practicable
4. Control the risk to the lowest level possible (if it cannot be
eliminated entirely) using a variety of control measures
5. Monitor and review risk control measures so as to
maintain a work environment that is without risks to the
health and safety of its workers.
What hazardous manual task training should be
provided to workers?
The law says a person conducting a business
or undertaking must provide “any information,
training, instruction or supervision that is necessary to protect all persons
from risks to their health and safety” (WHS Act 2011, section 19 f).
The Hazardous Manual Tasks Code of Practice further clarifies this
as “If a risk of MSDs remains after implementing higher level control
measures, then the risk must be minimised by providing information,
training and instruction.”

reducing costs. Reducing direct costs will increase the profit on
each sale, and eliminate unnecessary expenses. Getting your
costs under control can have an immediate and pleasing impact on
your bottom line.
Increasing your income and investigating ways to grow your
business are also crucial – focusing solely on costs can have a
negative impact on your bottom line.
Reduce your costs
There are a number of steps you can take to reduce your costs
– negotiate with your suppliers, review your processes and systems
to minimise wastage and increase efficiencies or look at increasing
security to reduce the chance of theft.
You may want to start by looking at your largest expense – which
may be your rent or your mortgage or loan repayments. Be objective,
is your current premises the best location for you? Do you need to
look at renegotiating your lease or engaging an external firm to
negotiate on your behalf?
Pay your bills on time. These days almost every organisation
charges a late fee. Use your online banking system to set up
automated payments to ensure you pay bills on time.
Increase your turnover
While there is a limit to decreasing your costs, there is no limit to
increasing turnover. The most obvious way to increase turnover is by
investing resources into building your sales volume. Focus on actively
selling. Put systems in place to make sure that your most profitable
customers are also your most loyal by prioritising customer service.
Make sure your staff understands the value of lifelong customers.

If you have physical
premises,
attracting
more foot traffic into
your business can assist
with turnover. Have you
had an objective look at
the external look of your
business? Is it inviting? Or are
there barriers, real or perceived,
that may be stopping new
customers from entering your business?
Feed opportunity – don’t starve it
Many small business owners get stuck focusing on problems
rather than opportunity. Use your planning cycle to make continuous
improvements, anticipate problems and increase your ability to be
agile in response to market demands. Develop systems that promote
best practice and share them throughout your business. Look to
your customers and suppliers for tips and advice on growing your
business. Your suppliers may be able to pass on useful industry
advice, while your customers can tell you what areas you should
be working on.

Life in the Xero lane…

Kate Cameron, Rochdale Accounting and Business Advisory

I

knew as soon as I attended my first Xerocon Sydney (the national
Xero conference) that my life had just changed significantly for the
better.
There are those that may say accounting is boring, however,
attending 2 days of Xerocon is anything but, it's all about accounting

technology and innovation. I spent 2 days learning about these
innovations and hearing from industry futurists. It's absolutely mind
blowing and fabulous to see the rapid pace at which this industry is
evolving and more so, knowing how exciting the future of working
with businesses is. It was exactly what I wanted, and now nearly 3 years
later, the future continues to look exciting and the pace of change for
our industry has increased dramatically.

People are “getting with the program.” I now work with clients
in real time, looking at their business with them every month, with
accurate up to date data, assisting to make decisions when they need,
improving business efficiencies and monitoring against plans with ease.
Just today, I sat in a business, analysed the last 3 months results by
division and it was clear one business division wasn’t working and
was draining business profits from the more profitable divisions –
their comments were,” wow … we always thought that was a great
division and things were going well with it” … it comes back to
tracking the numbers, and folks … real and up to date numbers
simply do not lie! It’s clear if this division continues unchecked, it will
suck the life out of the entire business, one dollar at a time. Hard to
know what to do or change when you can’t track up to date results.
One of the exciting areas we are also working on with clients is
in the Xero Add-On space. These are cloud based software solutions
designed to improve other areas of your business. The client I worked
with today has 2 add on solutions integrating with Xero, a cloud
Point of Sale system called Vend and a fabulous rostering program
called Deputy, which allows the effortless roster management of 35
staff. Deputy integrates with Xero payroll so casual shift times are
made easy in the weekly payroll. They are also using it to see real
time shift costs against sales and monitor staff for shift efficiencies
– sending casuals home when they are not needed. Again, it comes
back to knowing the real time numbers and using them to make better
business decisions.
To find out more, come to one of the Northern Rivers Xero Day
events on March 31st in Lismore, Ballina & Byron Bay. See how Xero
can work better for your business.

FREE SEMINARS - Reduce Your Bookkeeping by 80%
400,000 businesses have discovered how to do it, using Xero cloud accounting - Now YOU can too:
• Stop clients saying “I didn’t get the invoice”
• Have your bank transactions fed directly into Xero
• Reduce the time it takes doing bank reconciliations
• Automatically have your receipts entered into Xero
Plus, you’ll be able to raise invoices, approve pay runs, even record expenses on any device.

*** ELECTION SPECIAL *** ELECTION SPECIAL *** ELECTION SPECIAL ***

Kris Beavis

NSW Nationals Candidate for Ballina
If you/your party are elected, what will it mean for the region’s
small business owners?
It will mean a strong voice for Ballina down in Sydney who has lived
small business in the northern rivers, understands what we need from
government and can advocate from inside the tent to deliver.
Small businesses are the backbone of our economy – I get that.
Labor never understood the needs of small business or small business
owners, and failed to create an environment that supported the growth
of small business. Under them, economic growth was slowest of all
states in the nation for a decade – we’ve returned NSW to the number
one position in Australia.
Under them, we had the highest number of Acts of Parliament in the
country – The Nationals have reduced government red tape by 20% in
four years, and removed at least two pieces of legislation for every one
that’s introduced.
We’ve also ensured NSW Government agencies pay their bills
– particularly to small businesses – within 30 days. When you’re in
government, helping small businesses is as much as anything about
getting out of the way – that’s something I and The Nationals understand.

The Northern Rivers is an area is an area of outstanding natural
beauty. What are your/your party’s views on environmental
issues locally and on a wider scale?
I am a fierce advocate for the environment. We must protect our
precious water, environment and prime agricultural land.
The Nationals have not introduced any new CSG exploration licences

since coming to government in 2011. We will not issue any new licences
on the North Coast if elected on March 28.
Instead, we’ve spent the last four years cleaning up Labor’s mess.
Labor handed out 37 new exploration licences – for just $1000 each
– when they were last in government. Those licences covered more than
half of the State.
We’ve bought back and cancelled licences, winding back the
area covered to just 15%. The Ballina electorate – blanketed by CSG
exploration licences under Labor – is now almost CSG-free thanks to
The Nationals.
Labor would have you believe they will just rip up the licences they
handed out – it is not that easy. I don’t want CSG here. Full stop. But you
need a plan, which is what The Nationals have.

What will a vote for you/your party mean for the local
communities of the region?
A vote for me on March 28 will be a vote for a strong voice able to
fight for what Ballina deserves, at the top table of government.
It’s a vote for accountability, integrity and common sense.
It’s a vote for action, rather than hollow words and empty promises.
I’ve lived in northern NSW most of my life – I love this place. I’ve
worked here in small business – and running the Westpac Rescue
Helicopter Service – as well as volunteering in surf lifesaving for decades.
I want to see us move forward, and to get the investment into
infrastructure that we deserve. I have a clear plan, to deliver record
investment into infrastructure into the Ballina electorate.

Take Care of Your Brand
Moyra Burke-Smith, Cool Promo

M

ore than ever, building a brand name is key in the success of
any business. Getting that brand into the minds of customers
is one thing, but staying there is another.
With so many channels to get your brand noticed you have to be
savvy which you choose, unless you have bottomless pockets of course.
Promotional products are a highly cost effective way of achieving
brand visibility. In comparison with internet, TV and printed advertising
material, studies have found that the recall rate of a brand name is
drastically higher when seen on a product. The
brand is seen again and again, day after day,
week in, week out... it literally becomes part
of the furniture.
This is the kind of brand penetration that
creates a lasting, personal connection. Often
what starts life as a branded promotional
product becomes the favourite pen, "my
cup" in the office, or the family beach
umbrella that becomes known by the name
of the brand on it. ‘Don’t forget the Stella’ was the
phrase we had in our house for the 10 years we had a Stella Artois beach
umbrella. Now the umbrella may have cost them $30, for that they had
10 years of visibility from that investment, what other medium does that?
Associations and connections are made with those positive
experiences...that first cup of coffee in the morning...the beach holiday...
However, you do need to protect your brand, don’t be drawn in to
buying cheap and nasty throwaways, it will damage your brand. There
are plenty of good quality economical items you can find, just keep these
4 things in mind:

Web Design

|

Graphic Design

|

Will it be used? The more use the product gets, the more exposure
for your brand. Everyday practical items get used - pens, coffee mugs,
water bottles... These high use items are ideal for branding and don’t
break the bank.
Is it good quality? You naturally want to align your brand with quality.
Poor quality product sends all the wrong messages... High quality
provides for a positive and lasting association with the brand; the item
lasts longer, will be frequently used and therefore increases the exposure
of the brand and ROI.
Is it appealing? Undoubtedly, appealing and attractive items have a
higher use rate - if people like a product,
they will use it time and time again. Once
more, the higher the use, the higher the
brand exposure.
Is the decoration high quality? This is
essential - if the branding looks unclear,
messy or wears off before the end of
the life of the product… need I explain
further?
There are literally millions of items on
the market, so take your time and ask for
advice from your promotions supplier,
they generally know what’s hot and
what works for different target markets.
