GENERAL COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course provides an opportunity for participants to integrate their learning from other Semester One courses with their beginning understanding of nursing practice. Participants explore the role of the professional nurse in a variety of practice settings and have opportunities to engage with families in the community and to experience families’ perceptions and personal meanings of health and health promotion.

Program Information: This course is required for the first year of the Bachelor of Science in Nursing Program

Textbooks and Required Resources: Textbook selection varies by instructor and may change from year to year. At the Course Outline Effective Date the following textbooks were in use: Doane, G., & Varcoe, C. (2005). Family nursing as relational inquiry: Developing healthpromoting practice. Philadelphia: Lippincott Williams & Wilkins. As this course provides participants with the opportunity to integrate their learning from other Semester One courses, the texts needed for NURS 110, 111, and 113 will be used in NURS 115: Nursing Practice 1. Students should refer to the list of required texts and professional documents listed on those course outlines. Resources: Stethoscope (good quality) Name tag (Will be ordered during the first week of class) Navy tailored uniform Casual slacks (non-denim)

LEARNING OUTCOMES: Ends-In-View Participants explore the role of the professional nurse in the practice setting and have opportunities to experience nurses’ work in a variety of settings. Participants also have opportunities to engage with families in the community and to experience families’ perceptions and personal meanings of health and health promotion. Participants synthesize learning from other first semester courses into the family visits.

COURSE TOPICS: Process: Participants learn about professional nursing practice, critical thinking, and critical reflection. Practice experiences are supported by seminars, which provide opportunities to examine theories and concepts for discussion, exploration, and integration. Praxis involves the examination of the dynamic interplay between theory and practice. Praxis is actualized by critical reflection, journaling, and active participation in nursing practice seminars. Practice experiences provide opportunities for participants to learn from a resource family and observe nurses working in diverse practice settings. ATTENDANCE AND ASSIGNMENT REQUIREMENTS: See COTR Nursing Program Admission and Progression Policies Additional Related Policies 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. All learning experiences are mandatory. Students who are unable to attend a scheduled learning event must notify the instructor at the earliest possible opportunity. Students must contact the instructor as soon as possible after return to classes regarding making up missed learning experiences. A “COM” is a passing grade in this course and is required for progression in the program. All written assignments must conform to the departmental expectations for scholarly papers based on the standards of the American Psychological Association (APA, 2001). All assignments must be submitted by the contract date. A penalty of 10% per calendar day will be deducted for late assignments. Extensions will be considered on an individual basis when legitimate circumstances support the student’s request, provided the extension is negotiated 48 hours in advance of the due date.

EXAM POLICY Students must attend all required scheduled exams that make up a final grade at the appointed time and place. Individual instructors may accommodate for illness or personal crisis. Additional accommodation will not be made unless a written request is sent to and approved by the appropriate Department Head prior to the scheduled exam. Any student who misses a scheduled exam without approval will be given a grade of “0” for the exam.

To receive COM the student must attain a minimum of 60% as an overall grade for NURS 115.
