OBJECTIVES

To study the average fuel wastage due to traffic jam
Average fuel wastage in india
The country loses Rs 60,000 crore a year due to congestion (including fuel wastage), slow speed
of freight vehicles and waiting time at toll plazas and checking points, a study on operational
efficiencies of freight transportation by roads has claimed.
The report blamed waiting time at toll plazas as one of the main reasons for long travel time of
freight vehicles on highways it surveyed.. Toll stoppages account for almost 7% of the stoppage
delay on an average. The findings are no different on the Delhi-Bangalore stretch.

 To study the space problem due to traffic jam
vehicles were growing at 10.76%, the road length was increasing at only 4.01%, there is huge
difference due to this there arises problem of space.
During widening of NHs, the available road space gets reduced and vehicles take several
divertions

REASONS

1. It is a two-way street with no divider. There is a traffic build-up on one side. You are stuck in
the traffic as well. All of a sudden, an auto goes on the incoming side. Followed by another car
and another auto. In sometime, you see they have blocked the incoming traffic. And it was due to
some similar things, that resulted in the traffic in the first place.
2. Again, you are going in a two way street. You see a car parked in such a manner, that only one
vehicle can pass at a time. A bus is coming from the other side, and a car has turned its face and
blocked the road of the bus. Everything comes to a stand still. Soon, the things mentioned in
number one starts from both sides.
3. Driving on a 4 lane road, 2 for each side, with divider. You see a bus driving in the middle of
the road, occupying half of both the lanes. Obviously, driving slower than you. You slow down,
and so others behind you. Before you know, traffic comes to a snail speed, 500 meters behind
you.
I can go on and on. There seems to be 3 major reasons.
1.

Not following the rules.

2.

Not enough traffic police

3.

No compassion towards fellow travelers

Suggestions

Pass a rule to have people do community traffic policing.

Community Traffic Policing can be given as a replacement to fine for traffic related
violation.

Different number of traffic policing based on the nature of violation.

1 day can be split by the people for 2 half days.

Each of the person will also spend 2 hours in a traffic education/policing classroom.

Start punishing people for offense like breaking the lanes, blocking other traffic, wrong
parking, etc.

Proper zoning - like specific residential, commercial and industrial zones with no
overlapping and/or conversion of zone type. Some of the residences in Indiranagar and
Koramangala have been converted to commercial/industrial(office space) properties. Most of
them do not have parking space because of which cars are parked on the road sides
sometimes on the footpaths as well. This roadside parking congests the roads even further.

High parking fees including parking on roads, malls, etc. Once this is done, people will
think twice before using their personal vehicles. For example in New York, car parking per
day costs $50, per hour it is $15.

One car per residence; hike the tax exorbitantly for the second car like in Singapore.

Min. of 3 passengers in a big vehicle(SUVs, large sedans). Hardly makes sense for a
chauffeur driven car to occupy the space of 2 cars especially when we are fighting for space
everywhere. This in turn would also incline people to use more efficient vehicles leading to
lesser use of petrol/diesel.

Improve BMTC facility; some areas always have buses filled to double its capacity.
Public services should make profits but then they also have to give back equally. Reduction
in bus fares is needed as BMTC charges more when compared to public transports in other
metros.

Benefits

Reduction in corruption: With unknown people around, corruption will become uncomfortable.
Actually, one of the roles of the community traffic police can be to report any corruption.

Better roads. When the traffic can be managed correctly, the quality of the roads will
automatically improve.

May be, just may be, other good initiatives will be easier to implement. e.g. Car Pooling,
Public Transportation, etc.

Given the merits and advantages listed above, I believe, it is certainly worth a shot.
