Our story begins in 1907 when the Baptist General Convention of Oklahoma appointed an education commission to establish a Baptist university. Those pioneers envisioned a university grounded in the liberal arts—preparing students to integrate their Christian faith and disciplines as educators, doctors, lawyers, artists, musicians, missionaries, pastors, entrepreneurs, writers, poets, actors and economists. You might be wondering how your story aligns with ours. We want to help you become the person God intends. HAS ANYONE EVER ASKED YOU, “WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF IN 10 YEARS?”
We know. It’s a difficult question, mainly because it’s about the future. But imagine there are no obstacles to your dream life or dream job. The usual deal-breakers (time, money, relationships) don’t apply. Now ask yourself again, “If I could do anything in the world, what would it be?” Don’t be afraid to dream big—identifying what you want to “be” when you “grow up” is really the answer to a much larger question: “Who do U want to become?” It’s really a question about the present, because God has already given you special gifts and passions. And those gifts and passions are as unique as His purpose for your life. So this book is not just about OBU. It’s about you. It is your story— the story of how you came to be U by discovering your interests, imagining the possibilities and becoming the person God intends. For the past 100 years, OBU has been helping individuals just like you become the people God created them to be. Last year, almost 1,800 students from more than 40 states and 20 countries chose OBU as the place to start their journey of becoming. They were drawn to OBU’s integrated approach to learning that helps students view different subjects through a Christian lens. They found their passions addressed by our 84 programs of academic study.

RAWC ACTIVITIES
You’ll find everything you need at the RAWC for a hard-core workout. We have treadmills, incline and elliptical trainers and FreeMotion™ weight machines. We have rowers, recumbent and upright bikes, epic strength and cross cable machines. We also have a great range of free fitness classes that give you the chance to try something new. THE RAWC: RECREATION AND WELLNESS CENTER
The RAWC (Recreation and Wellness Center) is one of the newest and most popular buildings on campus. This state-of-the-art facility was built specifically with OBU students in mind. You will find the RAWC is more than just a gym—it’s a community of sports fanatics, health enthusiasts and life adventurers. You can join forces with these individuals by participating in group fitness classes and intramural sports programs, and in learning how to stay healthy. At OBU you can push your physical self to become stronger, faster and healthier. However, it’s not all about cardio boot camp. Ever heard of wallyball? Gather up your friends and hit the court to have a great time while burning a few calories and relieving some of that college stress.

BECOMING A BISON
Becoming U at OBU also means you become a Bison. That’s an invitation to join a community of sports lovers, a world-class coaching staff and committed athletes. So whether you want to scream like a maniac from the stands or stretch your athletic ability, OBU has a place for you on the team. We offer 17 varsity sports and eight junior varsity-level sports programs. By 2013, OBU will offer 21 varsity sports, making it one of the largest programs in the NAIA. We added men’s and women’s swimming in 2011 and will begin women’s lacrosse competition in the spring of 2013. Currently, OBU offers the only varsity college swim team in Oklahoma. We’re also returning to our football roots by adding a varsity team in the fall of 2013. Our athletes have claimed 51 All-American recognitions. The Success Center staff will help you develop successful study skills and better understand your courses. They provide support for all core subjects as well as discipline-specific courses. THE BISON PLEDGE
More than half of all college students take six years to earn their “four-year” degree. We pledge to actively collaborate with you and help you graduate in four years, allowing you to begin graduate studies or secure your dream job sooner. This is The Bison Pledge.

OBU will offer all required courses necessary for you to complete an undergraduate degree and graduate with a single major within four years. OBU will provide a qualified faculty advisor to assist you in scheduling your classes and keeping you on track to graduate within four years. OBU will provide academic support services to assist you in successfully completing your degree and graduating within four years. If you keep your part of The Bison Pledge and you are unable to complete your degree within four years, OBU will provide the additional course(s) you need to complete your degree at no tuition cost or offer acceptable substitute courses.

A Learning Community is a group of approximately 20 students who share at least three classes. They help lay the groundwork for longterm collegiate success. Participating students connect with peers and professors outside the classroom, in community service, during study groups and through social interaction.

NURSING
OBU was the first university in the state to offer the Bachelor of Science degree in nursing. When you study in the College of Nursing at OBU, you will benefit from more than 50 years of experience in training nurses. OBU nursing graduates are in high demand by major healthcare systems and community hospitals alike. Why should you study nursing at OBU? » Nursing at a four-year liberal arts university will provide you a much broader and deeper education than you will receive at other institutions. » 90+ percent of OBU nursing graduates pass the NCLEX. » You will take your first nursing class in your first semester at OBU. » You will interact with actual patients during your second year. » There is no “split-campus approach.” You can start and finish all of your coursework on our campus. » You can experience your rotations in major hospitals. » If you begin in the College of Nursing and maintain an acceptable grade point average, you are guaranteed a spot in the nursing program.
BUSINESS
Forecasters predict that degrees in accounting, finance, computer science and business administration will be among the top five bachelor’s degrees demanded by employers. Can you imagine having one of the most soughtafter degrees upon graduation? After graduating from OBU’s Paul Dickinson College of Business, not only will you be sought by employers, you will also be equipped to make a difference in the world. In fact, you’ll make a difference while you are pursuing your degree. Accounting majors earn up to 12 hours of credit for accounting work in an actual firm. Students majoring in finance manage portfolios and provide investment analyses for offcampus clients. International business majors complete market research for companies seeking to expand their business markets in places such as Brazil, Dubai and Malaysia. You’ll also learn to connect your skills with community service opportunities. Recently, students conducted employability workshops for residents of a women’s shelter. Are you becoming a nurse? If so, OBU is definitely the place for you. Although our nursing heritage is rich, we believe our best days are ahead. Architects have already submitted initial renderings of a new nursing building, fundraising is underway, and we fully expect to break ground in the very near future. BECOMING INSPIRED
As a student in the College of Business, you will learn from Dr. Renita Murimi, assistant professor of computer information science, who is using common technology to battle a global health risk. Murimi received a $100,000 grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to fund a low-cost cell phone application targeting mosquitoes that spread yellow and dengue fever. The innovative research will develop a cell phone application which plays sound waves that Murimi believes will interfere with the Aedes aegypti mosquito’s navigation system, preventing them from feeding and spreading disease.

SCIENCE & MATH
God is a God of order, not chaos, and nowhere is that more evident than in the disciplines of science and mathematics. OBU professors in the James E. Hurley College of Science and Mathematics teach from a Christian worldview. They prepare you to change the world by challenging you to think critically and integrate your faith with what you learn. Imagine transforming the world by researching cures for disease. Imagine discovering unidentified species. Imagine investing your life in the explorers of the future. OBU’s science and mathematics program offers you training in natural science, biochemistry, biology, chemistry, physics and mathematics. OBU can help you make a difference in the world as an explorer, a visionary and a critical thinker. Far from staying cooped up in the laboratory, our students participate in regional conferences and perform independent senior research projects. For example, you will have the opportunity to complete field research around volcanoes in Costa Rica and Hawaii. You’ll be mentored by Dr. Dale Utt, an entomologist who focuses on tropical and marine ecosystems.

FINE ARTS
Studying in the Warren M. Angell College of Fine Arts, you will learn to express your Godgiven gifts and reflect His glory through the arts. Our unique studio space in the Division of Art and Design is equipped for ceramics, stained glass, weaving, printmaking and painting. Graphic art students make use of the most current design tools. Recently, the artwork produced by an OBU student was selected by Starbucks Coffee to represent its 40th Anniversary “Red River Blend” in the North Texas and Oklahoma region. A typical art student at OBU meets nationally known artists through the professional networks of our faculty, obtains internships at high-profile corporations, and builds a strong portfolio for the first job interview or application for graduate school. The OBU Division of Music develops artists and scholars uniquely positioned to thrive in the 21st century by integrating exceptional performance, academic and service opportunities with a solid Christian liberal arts foundation. The instructors are committed to fulfill this mission by stretching your abilities and providing performance opportunities on campus and on tour. Perform operas such as “The Marriage of Figaro,” tour internationally with The Bison Jazz Orchestra or be prepared to continue the heritage begun by other OBU music graduates doing post-graduate work at renowned programs such as Eastman School of Music, The University of North Texas, Boston Conservatory, and Indiana University. Take a class or major in theater, digital media, journalism, public relations or applied communication in the Division of Communication Arts. The most recent Oklahoma Broadcast Education Association annual competition included 200 entries from universities across the state, including the state’s largest universities. OBU students placed first in six of the 20 categories: TV feature story, TV entertainment short, TV video essay, radio entertainment narrative, radio PSA and radio entertainment short. A CRITICAL THINKER
You’ll study under experts in aerospace engineering, entomology, genetics and forensics. You’ll study with Dr. Brad Jett, a microbiologist specializing in pathogenic bacteriology. Dr. Jett is widely known for preparing pre-med students who are the cream of the crop (OBU pre-med graduates enjoy a pass rate of 90+ percent on the MCAT, nearly twice the national average). And between classes, you might find Dr. Albert Chen, a computational physicist with ties to NASA’s Kennedy Space Center, available for an impromptu Q&A. For a complete list of majors, see page 23.

A CHANGE AGENT
HUMANITIES & SOCIAL SCIENCES
God desires to change your life and, through you, change the lives of others. Whether encouraging an individual through the implementation of your psychology degree, influencing future generations in an elementary classroom, or improving someone’s quality of life as a physical therapist, the College of Humanities and Social Sciences will prepare you for life as a change agent. Regardless of your major, you will engage pressing social issues in global contexts through your studies and the teaching approach will equip you to view ideas through the lens of your faith. The College contains four divisions of study: » Division of Language and Literature » Division of Behavioral and Social Sciences » Division of Kinesiology and Leisure Studies » Division of Teacher Education One of our fastest growing areas of academic study is the Division of Kinesiology and Leisure Studies (KALS). Students are being prepared for careers as physical therapists, wellness instructors and personal trainers. Some are focusing on sharpening their leadership skills through the study of camp administration and sports management while others are earning their coaching certificates. OBU is also home to the National Sports and Recreation Ministry Center, led by Dr. Bill Buchanan, arguably the nation’s leading expert in the field. Imagine learning from the best! The Division of Teacher Education takes a back seat to no one. Professor and chair Dr. John Farris serves on state and national education organizations. What does this mean for you? Once again, you can learn from a nationally respected leader in the field. Our Psychology program can either prepare you for graduate work or move you further toward the goal of licensed counseling. Political Science students gain experience in OBU’s Model Arab League. Anthropology majors often study overseas in places such as Israel and Thailand. For a complete list of majors, see page 23.

THEOLOGY & MINISTRY
God intends for all of us to serve our fellow man as followers of Christ, but some He calls to serve in a ministry vocation. The faculty of the Herschel H. Hobbs College of Theology and Ministry will help you deepen your faith, explore your calling and prepare for a life of service. Dr. Mark McClellan leads a faculty of scholars, theologians, trailblazers and visionaries who have dedicated their lives to bringing the nations to Christ. Dr. McClellan’s career includes extensive missionary service in Central America and among U.S. Spanishspeaking congregations. Dr. Alan Bandy, assistant professor of New Testament, is a rising star among New Testament theologians and is quickly becoming recognized as an authority on the Book of Revelation. He frequently leads teams of students on mission to places such as the Amazon Jungle in Peru. Dr. Scott Pace served as teaching pastor and administrator for the First Baptist Church of Daytona Beach, Florida, before joining the OBU faculty as assistant professor of applied ministry in 2010. Dr. Bruce Carlton, the newest member of the Hobbs faculty, has been engaged in crosscultural ministry for more than 24 years in Hong Kong, Cambodia and South Asia as well as the United States. He is a recognized missiologist and also serves as director of the Avery T. Willis Center for Global Outreach located on OBU’s campus. These godly leaders and their fellow professors in the Hobbs College not only know the Word of God, they live it on a daily basis. They don’t just talk about ministry. They do it. » OBU is the first Southern Baptist undergraduate institution to offer a full program in orality studies. » OBU adopted the Kai people group (2.8 million) of South Asia. Through the Avery T. Willis Center for Global Outreach, OBU students are sharing the Gospel and planting churches among the Kai until 2025.

God is calling you to a deeper relationship with Him. Through Campus Ministry you will be challenged to grow in your understanding of Scripture and to put it into action. Within the first few weeks of your arrival on campus you will have the chance to join a small discipleship group and begin a semester-long discussion about leadership, relationships, social responsibility, conflict resolution and other real-life topics. OUR CAMPUS
Our campus, known as Bison Hill, covers 200 acres. We have the usual residential halls, apartments, academic buildings, athletic facilities, library, and administration building. The campus also has features unique to OBU such as Stubblefield Chapel. It was in this small wood-frame church that the idea of Oklahoma Baptist University was born in 1907. The campus, though beautiful and functional, will be even more spectacular in the years ahead. In November 2010 the OBU Board of Trustees adopted a new Master Plan for campus expansion that provides for continued enrollment growth and the strengthening of our academic programs. The Geiger Center is our student union building. Students enjoy friendly games of ping pong, great conversation, and TV time on the big screen. It is also home to the dining hall, the Geiger Counter (a fast food grill) and Java City coffee shop as well as the university bookstore.
TECHNOLOGY
We are continually making strides to keep campus technology updated. Wireless connections are found throughout campus, including the residence halls. The university also provides free Microsoft Office and McAffee Anti-Virus software to students. Enrolled students also have access to our Dell education discount to purchase a laptop or any other Dell merchandise.
OBU TRADITIONS
THE BISON
Before OBU was established, Bison Hill was wellknown bison territory. Bison provided food and clothing to the Native Americans. OBU chose the bison as its mascot, in the hope graduates would also help meet the world’s needs.
THE GREEN & GOLD
In the early days, Oklahoma wildflowers provided a sea of green and gold on Bison Hill when they bloomed in the spring. Thus, green and gold were adopted as the official school colors.
CAMPUS SAFETY
Keeping you safe so you can enjoy your OBU learning experience is a top priority. We maintain a University Police Department whose officers conduct campus patrols on foot and by vehicle 24 hours a day. Officers also staff the registration desks located just inside the main entrances of residence halls from 11 p.m. until 7 a.m., providing protection for residents throughout the night.

The Walk represents a student’s full journey at OBU. Conducted the night before your first day of classes and the day you graduate, it begins at the Oval and ends at Raley Chapel.

Located in the heart of Oklahoma, Shawnee is a great place for you to call home. You get the best of both worlds here— a small-town feel with access to metropolitan areas. Shawnee is just 35 miles from Oklahoma City, 90 miles from Tulsa and 200 miles from the Dallas-Fort Worth area. So there’s much to explore in town and in the surrounding areas. In Shawnee, grab some friends and check out a movie at the $1.50 theatre downtown or at one of two multiplex theaters. Get a snow cone at Janie’s or play Ultimate Frisbee at a local park. Shawnee businesses prepare for your arrival to campus each year. During the first week of school, local businesses host Spotlight on Shawnee to welcome students to the city. It’s really a big downtown block party, and they give away great free stuff! Choosing OBU means you have plenty of space to roam. So head down the road to Oklahoma City where you can cheer on the Thunder as they battle NBA foes. Visit one of the museums, catch a Broadway show, enjoy a RedHawks baseball game or eat at some of the popular restaurants in Bricktown. Plan a weekend road trip to the Wichita Mountains to hike, camp and climb, or head to another corner of the state and float the river with some friends. You’ll find the nearby urban areas are close enough to enjoy cultural events or to complete an internship.

WELCOME WEEK
Welcome Week is designed to get you acclimated to your new environment. We promise that our Tri-Ws will make you feel at home at OBU by the end of the week. Tri-Ws (Welcome Week Workers) are upperclassmen who return to campus early just to show you the ropes. You’ll feel welcomed from the moment you pull onto Bison Hill as they descend on your car, unload all your earthly possessions and carry it all to your new room. Your parents will be particularly glad about that! For the next four days you’ll be engaged in high-energy activities and meaningful experiences that will teach you everything from how to “go with Ka-Rip,” and how to serve Shawnee, to how to pursue scholarship through a Christian worldview. Welcome Week is where your journey to becoming U truly begins. It’s fun. It’s crazy. It’s challenging. And, well … it’s welcoming! JANUARY TERM (J-TERM)
A three-week mini-term is offered in January, right before the spring semester begins. J-term is mandatory for new freshmen, but you would want to take it anyway. Housing is free if you lived in a residence hall during the fall semester, and some J-term courses are tuition-free. OBU provides unique course offerings, and there is still plenty of activity on campus. Continue building the relationships you established in the fall, and maintain progress on your degree.

Our Fall, Winter, and Spring Preview Days give you a real taste of the OBU experience. Take a campus tour, investigate our academic programs and learn about scholarships and financial aid. This day is specifically for high school seniors who want a closer look at student life. We know. It’s a difficult question, mainly because it’s about the future. But imagine there are no obstacles to your dream life or dream job. The usual deal-breakers (time, money, relationships) don’t apply. The RAWC (Recreation and Wellness Center) is one of the newest and most popular buildings on campus. This state-of-the-art facility was built specifically with OBU students in mind. You will find the RAWC is more than just a gym—it’s a community of sports fanatics, health enthusiasts and life adventurers. You can join forces with these individuals by participating in group fitness classes and intramural sports programs, and in learning how to stay healthy. Becoming U at OBU also means you become a Bison. That’s an invitation to join a community of sports lovers, a world-class coaching staff and committed athletes. So whether you want to scream like a maniac from the stands or stretch your athletic ability, OBU has a place for you on the team. We offer 17 varsity sports and eight junior varsity-level sports programs. By 2013, OBU will offer 21 varsity sports, making it one of the largest programs in the NAIA. We added men’s and women’s swimming in 2011 and will begin women’s lacrosse competition in the spring of 2013. Currently, OBU offers the only varsity college swim team in Oklahoma. We’re also returning to our football roots by adding a varsity team in the fall of 2013. Our athletes have claimed 51 All-American recognitions. THE BISON PLEDGE
More than half of all college students take six years to earn their “four-year” degree. We pledge to actively collaborate with you and help you graduate in four years, allowing you to begin graduate studies or secure your dream job sooner. This is The Bison Pledge.

OBU will offer all required courses necessary for you to complete an undergraduate degree and graduate with a single major within four years. OBU will provide a qualified faculty advisor to assist you in scheduling your classes and keeping you on track to graduate within four years. OBU will provide academic support services to assist you in successfully completing your degree and graduating within four years. If you keep your part of The Bison Pledge and you are unable to complete your degree within four years, OBU will provide the additional course(s) you need to complete your degree at no tuition cost or offer acceptable substitute courses.

NURSING
OBU was the first university in the state to offer the Bachelor of Science degree in nursing. When you study in the College of Nursing at OBU, you will benefit from more than 50 years of experience in training nurses. OBU nursing graduates are in high demand by major healthcare systems and community hospitals alike. Forecasters predict that degrees in accounting, finance, computer science and business administration will be among the top five bachelor’s degrees demanded by employers. Can you imagine having one of the most soughtafter degrees upon graduation? After graduating from OBU’s Paul Dickinson College of Business, not only will you be sought by employers, you will also be equipped to make a difference in the world. In fact, you’ll make a difference while you are pursuing your degree. Accounting majors earn up to 12 hours of credit for accounting work in an actual firm. Students majoring in finance manage portfolios and provide investment analyses for offcampus clients. International business majors complete market research for companies seeking to expand their business markets in places such as Brazil, Dubai and Malaysia. You’ll also learn to connect your skills with community service opportunities. Recently, students conducted employability workshops for residents of a women’s shelter. As a student in the College of Business, you will learn from Dr. Renita Murimi, assistant professor of computer information science, who is using common technology to battle a global health risk. Murimi received a $100,000 grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to fund a low-cost cell phone application targeting mosquitoes that spread yellow and dengue fever. The innovative research will develop a cell phone application which plays sound waves that Murimi believes will interfere with the Aedes aegypti mosquito’s navigation system, preventing them from feeding and spreading disease.

God is a God of order, not chaos, and nowhere is that more evident than in the disciplines of science and mathematics. OBU professors in the James E. Hurley College of Science and Mathematics teach from a Christian worldview. They prepare you to change the world by challenging you to think critically and integrate your faith with what you learn. OBU’s science and mathematics program offers you training in natural science, biochemistry, biology, chemistry, physics and mathematics. Far from staying cooped up in the laboratory, our students participate in regional conferences and perform independent senior research projects. For example, you will have the opportunity to complete field research around volcanoes in Costa Rica and Hawaii. Studying in the Warren M. Angell College of Fine Arts, you will learn to express your Godgiven gifts and reflect His glory through the arts. Our unique studio space in the Division of Art and Design is equipped for ceramics, stained glass, weaving, printmaking and painting. Graphic art students make use of the most current design tools. Recently, the artwork produced by an OBU student was selected by Starbucks Coffee to represent its 40th Anniversary “Red River Blend” in the North Texas and Oklahoma region. A typical art student at OBU meets nationally known artists through the professional networks of our faculty, obtains internships at high-profile corporations, and builds a strong portfolio for the first job interview or application for graduate school. The OBU Division of Music develops artists and scholars uniquely positioned to thrive in the 21st century by integrating exceptional performance, academic and service opportunities with a solid Christian liberal arts foundation. The instructors are committed to fulfill this mission by stretching your abilities and providing performance opportunities on campus and on tour. You’ll study under experts in aerospace engineering, entomology, genetics and forensics. You’ll study with Dr. Brad Jett, a microbiologist specializing in pathogenic bacteriology. God desires to change your life and, through you, change the lives of others. Whether encouraging an individual through the implementation of your psychology degree, influencing future generations in an elementary classroom, or improving someone’s quality of life as a physical therapist, the College of Humanities and Social Sciences will prepare you for life as a change agent. Regardless of your major, you will engage pressing social issues in global contexts through your studies and the teaching approach will equip you to view ideas through the lens of your faith. The College contains four divisions of study: » Division of Language and Literature » Division of Behavioral and Social Sciences » Division of Kinesiology and Leisure Studies » Division of Teacher Education One of our fastest growing areas of academic study is the Division of Kinesiology and Leisure Studies (KALS). Students are being prepared for careers as physical therapists, wellness instructors and personal trainers. Some are focusing on sharpening their leadership skills through the study of camp administration and sports management while others are earning their coaching certificates. OBU is also home to the National Sports and Recreation Ministry Center, led by Dr. Bill Buchanan, arguably the nation’s leading expert in the field. Imagine learning from the best! The Division of Teacher Education takes a back seat to no one. Professor and chair Dr. John Farris serves on state and national education organizations. What does this mean for you? THEOLOGY & MINISTRY
God intends for all of us to serve our fellow man as followers of Christ, but some He calls to serve in a ministry vocation. The faculty of the Herschel H. Hobbs College of Theology and Ministry will help you deepen your faith, explore your calling and prepare for a life of service. Dr. Mark McClellan leads a faculty of scholars, theologians, trailblazers and visionaries who have dedicated their lives to bringing the nations to Christ. Dr. McClellan’s career includes extensive missionary service in Central America and among U.S. Spanishspeaking congregations. Dr. Alan Bandy, assistant professor of New Testament, is a rising star among New Testament theologians and is quickly becoming recognized as an authority on the Book of Revelation. He frequently leads teams of students on mission to places such as the Amazon Jungle in Peru. Dr. Scott Pace served as teaching pastor and administrator for the First Baptist Church of Daytona Beach, Florida, before joining the OBU faculty as assistant professor of applied ministry in 2010. Dr. Bruce Carlton, the newest member of the Hobbs faculty, has been engaged in crosscultural ministry for more than 24 years in Hong Kong, Cambodia and South Asia as well as the United States. He is a recognized missiologist and also serves as director of the Avery T. Willis Center for Global Outreach located on OBU’s campus. These godly leaders and their fellow professors in the Hobbs College not only know the Word of God, they live it on a daily basis. They don’t just talk about ministry. They do it. Your journey to becoming the person God intends will include fulfilling the Great Commission and the Great Commandment. Becoming U at OBU means we equip you to make disciples of all nations— no matter if you are a minister or an artist. You do not have to look far to find ways to engage a diverse world while you are at OBU. Your classmates will come from 40 states and 20 nations. You’ll be surrounded by opportunities to interact with people from near and far and experience other cultures. The Avery T. Willis Center for Global Outreach is named after former missionary and OBU alum, the late Dr. Avery T. Willis. The center provides you with opportunities to reach out to people around the globe with the Gospel message and empowers you to integrate your faith and education through cross-cultural experiences.

WORSHIP OUTREACH
God is calling you to a deeper relationship with Him. Through Campus Ministry you will be challenged to grow in your understanding of Scripture and to put it into action. Within the first few weeks of your arrival on campus you will have the chance to join a small discipleship group and begin a semester-long discussion about leadership, relationships, social responsibility, conflict resolution and other real-life topics. You’ll also find community at OBU through service projects and worship experiences. In fact, finding community at OBU won’t be the hard part—deciding where to plug in first will.

OUR CAMPUS
Our campus, known as Bison Hill, covers 200 acres. We have the usual residential halls, apartments, academic buildings, athletic facilities, library, and administration building. The campus also has features unique to OBU such as Stubblefield Chapel. It was in this small wood-frame church that the idea of Oklahoma Baptist University was born in 1907. The campus, though beautiful and functional, will be even more spectacular in the years ahead. In November 2010 the OBU Board of Trustees adopted a new Master Plan for campus expansion that provides for continued enrollment growth and the strengthening of our academic programs. The Geiger Center is our student union building. Students enjoy friendly games of ping pong, great conversation, and TV time on the big screen. It is also home to the dining hall, the Geiger Counter (a fast food grill) and Java City coffee shop as well as the university bookstore.
TECHNOLOGY
We are continually making strides to keep campus technology updated. Wireless connections are found throughout campus, including the residence halls. The university also provides free Microsoft Office and McAffee Anti-Virus software to students. Enrolled students also have access to our Dell education discount to purchase a laptop or any other Dell merchandise.
OBU TRADITIONS
THE BISON
Before OBU was established, Bison Hill was wellknown bison territory. Bison provided food and clothing to the Native Americans. OBU chose the bison as its mascot, in the hope graduates would also help meet the world’s needs.
THE GREEN & GOLD
In the early days, Oklahoma wildflowers provided a sea of green and gold on Bison Hill when they bloomed in the spring. Thus, green and gold were adopted as the official school colors.
CAMPUS SAFETY
Keeping you safe so you can enjoy your OBU learning experience is a top priority. We maintain a University Police Department whose officers conduct campus patrols on foot and by vehicle 24 hours a day. Officers also staff the registration desks located just inside the main entrances of residence halls from 11 p.m. until 7 a.m., providing protection for residents throughout the night.

The Walk represents a student’s full journey at OBU. Conducted the night before your first day of classes and the day you graduate, it begins at the Oval and ends at Raley Chapel.

Located in the heart of Oklahoma, Shawnee is a great place for you to call home. You get the best of both worlds here— a small-town feel with access to metropolitan areas. Shawnee is just 35 miles from Oklahoma City, 90 miles from Tulsa and 200 miles from the Dallas-Fort Worth area. So there’s much to explore in town and in the surrounding areas. In Shawnee, grab some friends and check out a movie at the $1.50 theatre downtown or at one of two multiplex theaters. Get a snow cone at Janie’s or play Ultimate Frisbee at a local park. Shawnee businesses prepare for your arrival to campus each year. During the first week of school, local businesses host Spotlight on Shawnee to welcome students to the city. It’s really a big downtown block party, and they give away great free stuff! Choosing OBU means you have plenty of space to roam. So head down the road to Oklahoma City where you can cheer on the Thunder as they battle NBA foes. Visit one of the museums, catch a Broadway show, enjoy a RedHawks baseball game or eat at some of the popular restaurants in Bricktown. Plan a weekend road trip to the Wichita Mountains to hike, camp and climb, or head to another corner of the state and float the river with some friends. You’ll find the nearby urban areas are close enough to enjoy cultural events or to complete an internship.

WELCOME WEEK
Welcome Week is designed to get you acclimated to your new environment. We promise that our Tri-Ws will make you feel at home at OBU by the end of the week. Tri-Ws (Welcome Week Workers) are upperclassmen who return to campus early just to show you the ropes. You’ll feel welcomed from the moment you pull onto Bison Hill as they descend on your car, unload all your earthly possessions and carry it all to your new room. Your parents will be particularly glad about that! For the next four days you’ll be engaged in high-energy activities and meaningful experiences that will teach you everything from how to “go with Ka-Rip,” and how to serve Shawnee, to how to pursue scholarship through a Christian worldview. Welcome Week is where your journey to becoming U truly begins. It’s fun. It’s crazy. It’s challenging. And, well … it’s welcoming! JANUARY TERM (J-TERM)
A three-week mini-term is offered in January, right before the spring semester begins. J-term is mandatory for new freshmen, but you would want to take it anyway. Housing is free if you lived in a residence hall during the fall semester, and some J-term courses are tuition-free. OBU provides unique course offerings, and there is still plenty of activity on campus. Continue building the relationships you established in the fall, and maintain progress on your degree.

Our Fall, Winter, and Spring Preview Days give you a real taste of the OBU experience. Take a campus tour, investigate our academic programs and learn about scholarships and financial aid. You and your parents can meet professors and current students and visit with your admissions counselor. After you’ve been accepted to OBU, come to Be-A-Bison Day. This day is specifically for high school seniors who want a closer look at student life. You’ll get to spend a day on campus hanging out with a current student, attend a chapel service, sit in on a class, grab lunch in the dining hall and explore the residence halls.
