OCCUPY ORANGE COUNTY . . . IS ORGANIZED!!!
Occupy Orange County (D'Marie)
Organizer Hi Everyone, We are so excited to see everyone's enthusiasm for Occupy Orange County CA. Thank you to Scott for getting this online management tool up and running so that it will be easier for the committees to work together. This is a new tool for me, so I am learning how to navigate it. Woohoo...love great technology!!! I would like to bring everyone up to date as it seems that the enthusiasm is running in many different directions. Prior to this site going up . . . we had 80 volunteers send contact info to Occupy Orange County . . . all names gave been inputed into an Excel spreadsheet (we have a few more to put in) and then sorted by your areas of interest or committees you said you wanted to be a part of. The only two committees that I had time to notify yesterday were the core members of the Logistics and the Media-Print. The Logistics Committee is responsible for the site selection, set up, and organization. This committee is comprised of the original facilitators that started Occupy pages on Facebook and the OccupyOC Twitter account as well as a few first responders to the call for help. More people will be added as the requests to join the committee come in. The Media-Print Committee Core was notified last night so that the first flyers could be designed and printed for handouts beginning tomorrow. So flyers are already in process. As soon as I finish this post, I will finish notifying the rest of the Committees as to who their core volunteers are. Each committee needs to have a facilitator as a go to person and a person to notify the Logistics Committee as to their progress and if they need to reach out to other committees for additional help. Some Committees already have a facilitator in place as volunteers stepped up on the initial Conference call on Monday evening. The minutes of last night's conference call with the Logistics Committee will be posted today. In a nutshell, we came up with a win-win solution that is inclusive and allows EVERYONE to be involved. It is not a matter of either or, it is a solution of AND. The focus of the Occupy Wall Street is to expose the greed and corruption of the corporations and banks. That is why Wall Street was chosen, not Washington DC. The 99% of us know how our lives have changed for the worse...that our finances are being squeezed because of the greed of corporate America and the banks that are foreclosing on us. This occupation is not about rubbing each other's backs so we feel good, its about putting it in the face of the perpetrators and saying we are not going to take it any more...thus the financial district. If you google, "Where is the financial district of Orange County" you will see that is is Irvine. Many national and international corporations headquarters as well as investment brokerage firms are housed in the business district bordered by Von Karmen, Main and MacArthur. The people who work there have no clue what is going, I know because until two years ago, I worked there. These are the people that need to be awakened. This area is the area we will be occupying on October 15th for at least one week. Prior to this occupation on the 15th, we will be doing progressive day occupations in surrounding cities, like Santa Ana, Fullerton, hopefully Costa Mesa, Disneyland/Anaheim, Orange and it would be great to occupy a city in South Orange County too. We say hopefully on the last three because we are awaiting a commitment from someone to do the leg work in those cities to check city ordinances and possible permits. These mini occupations are for public relations/marketing to spread the word about the Occupy Orange County in Irvine on October 15th. Once we are in occupation we can take the consensus of the General Assembly to see if everyone would like to move the occupation to Santa Ana on October 22nd (which is the original date that the facilitator of Santa Ana had chosen). Once moved to Santa Ana the occupation can stay there until it ends. This solution allows Occupy Orange County CA to target both the financial district and the seat of the county government. It is a win-win solution that allows the numbers to swell and increase momentum. The Media-Print Committee has been engaged to design fliers for the day of occupations. The flyers will send people to Irvine on October 15th. Now, the Logistics Committee is working on talking to the Irvine City Officials, The Fullerton City Officials, The Santa Ana City Officials...we will have full reports and details hopefully by tonight. When Scott approached me about starting this site, it was my understanding that it was to help coordinate the volunteers in their respective committees and to share documents as necessary. It is not to be an all out explosion of ideas. Ideas are to be given in their respective committees. If you are passionate about a 10/5/2011 1:23 PM

out explosion of ideas. Ideas are to be given in their respective committees. If you are passionate about a particular part of the process then join the committee that deals with it. Please do not put it out into discussion to have over 500 or more people comment on it. We must be organized and in unity. All agreed upon directives will continue to be posted on Facebook, as not everyone is a volunteer. Facebook will remain the central place for disseminating information. Once our website is up and running, which by the way we are already working on (domain has been purchased). Those of you who volunteered for the MediaSocial Media will be notified shortly. The website and Facebook will be the place for you all to get accurate info. While we have your attention, we want to reiterate that the Occupy Orange County CA movement is about being in solidarity with Occupy Wall Street. We all have our own causes and opinions politically, religiously, socially, environmentally, etc...this is not the forum for them. This movement is united as the 99% who will no longer take the greed and corruption of the 1%. Please keep all posts on this online management tool, Facebook, Twitter, print media, etc...focused on this one theme. None of our causes will ever gain momentum until we break the stranglehold that the corporations and banks have on our government. This is the first step...let's step in Unity!!!

this is NOT what 'grassroots" means. if you really want to unite the dissatisfied people of OC, you shouldn't be trying to make decisions that you think is best without taking a general vote ahead of time. at the very least you should have had a general vote among people who've signed up for Occupy Orange County online.

Nicholas, we are doing the best we can with the tools we have. Lots of things went on behind the scenes to bring the facilitators of occupys different cities together under one umbrella. If you wanted to have your say, you ought to have been a first responder to the Logistics Committee... Once we are in assembly, then consensus will take place.

I understand that you have to start somewhere, but what you don't seem to understand is the circularity problem you're creating. if having the first general assembly in Irvine dissuades people from participating, then of course people who do participate are going to be more interested in staying in Irvine. It's like throwing a party in Antarctica and then saying "everyone who came loved it." And sentiments like "if you wanted to have your say" are quite condescending and kind of self-serving. I listened very intently to the first organizational conference call, and if you had made it known you'd be deciding where to have the first general assembly, you would have had far more interest. And more to the point, this isn't how committees are supposed to work. They don't make decisions on everyone else's behalf, they create a concise report that everyone else can consider and then vote on. Even that wouldn't have been representative of everyone who wants to participate, but it would have been closer at least. That would have been the best we could do with the tools we have. But what's done is done, and "Irvine on the 15th" is in the media. I only hope that you can begin to break out of the hierarchical-organizational thinking that's the very reason "the 99%" has come into existence. Also, I don't know if I'm speaking to D'Marie or whom else, but I think everyone would appreciate it if you used your real name. Speaking from behind the name of an organizational label does not engender trust and camaraderie.

Stop complaining! Oh my word! What do you want to be a part of Nicholas? We are ORGANIZING a function to get together so we can express our ideas with people. If you would like to start your own Occupy and plan everything, I will be there to support you, if you want to be a part of this group then be A PART of it and make some suggestions or give us an IDEA. Don't just slam the people that are trying.

Never divide your forces. Always make the first blow a powerful major blow. You need to concentrate on ONE spot, Santa Ana. Then you can branch out AFTER you are able to rally more support.

Yes, this is D'Marie...I am not hiding behind anything...This was set up for me by Scott... This is a huge undertaking . . . You have no idea what is going on behind the scenes...nor do you see all the people that are volunteering to be a part of this project. . . . we talking about organization . . . I was in LA on Sunday. . . everything was run by Committees taking proposals to General Assembly. Last night the Logistics Committee made decisions...today they are doing their feasibility exercises . . . so details can be pinned down...people are actually getting things accomplished so this can happen . . . and not get stalled in General Assembly which is exactly what happened at the General Assembly in LA. You can't vote on possibilities...you have to vote on ideas that are backed up with concrete facts...we are getting the facts. Minutes from last nights call is going up. And then I've got to finish my work with the committees.

It takes 5 seconds to change your profile name. I think we'd all feel more comfortable with that. You accuse others of not having the facts, but it hardly seems like you do--certainly not popular opinion. That's a concrete fact. And things may be slow in the LA General Assembly, but that's how grassroots democracy works. It's messy and slow. That's a concrete fact. And yes, you do in concrete fact vote on possibilities. Like one possible president or another, or one possible place to organize or another. That's a concrete fact, and you're just splitting hairs about the difference between possibilities and ideas. Your attitude is completely messed up. No one's said that you're not working hard to make this happen. But you are being unilateral about it and telling others to fall in line with your decisions. That's exactly why everyone's so dissatisfied with the political establishment and the economic status quo. And no matter how much work you put into this venture, if you alienate people who want to participate you'll have accomplished nothing, no matter how many permits you get. I'm not trying to be divisive here; I'm actually trying to be inclusive. It shouldn't surprise you that more people are participating now. It's not like everyone found out about the facebook group you started at the exact same time. Does that mean their opinions don't count? I certainly hope you don't think so. But my worry is that in your fixation on moving forward, you'll end up leaving a lot of people behind.

Yes, there is a problem. However, blaming someone instead of suggesting ideas gets everyone nowhere. We are all open to suggestions, but from what if read sifting through all of the posts is that someone eager to start something in their own city got excited n got a hold of the media got a jump start n now because of the OC label while santa ana may be the right place to actually start and what the people want, its almost an obligation to show up in Irvine. However she is arranging a Santa ana meet for everyone as well as a few other sites. Besides the fact of not having it where everyone wants it. I personally hope we get everyone on the same page soon and form some ideas with all the open minded, creative people, that are out for the same cause that I know we have! :) We have someone taking initiative with flyers, they just went ahead and did it, asked for everyones opinions and its getting done! Let us know if you are working on anything and ask
everyones opinions and its getting done! Let us know if you are working on anything and ask for help, maybe you have a brilliant idea to get attention, or a person to get ahold of free food! We wanna know about it! Someone also told us on here that they know a hold bunch of musicians that are down to come out n play. :)

Hasn't the government been corrupted by the greed of Wall Street? Isn't the government the ones that have allowed themselves to be bought by Wall Street? Then why not protest the government also? They are the ones who need to change the laws and reflect the will of the people. Concentrating on Wall Street seems to be focusing on only part of the problem.

D'Marie, We appreciate your efforts - it's just that this is OUR movement. and we want to be a part of it AND we want others, esp. those who are usually underrepresented. It is thwarting the energy of many people when only one person seems to control it. Please try to understand. Maybe we can start all over again and meet in Santa Ana and send out the call? Irvine is not central enough and Santa Ana has lots of banks by South Coast Plaza!

So you bypassed us and are planning it ...fine...go ahead..call the protests and I'll go. I won't have to be bothered w/ the beautiful struggle of democracy - on the other hand I know you want this to be successful, as we all do. It's just that we should have planned a face to face before...But this s the way we do in OC too often. We're all leaders cos we all have a voice.

What is goin on in LA is beautiful - it DOES take a few days to work out kinks in working w/ each other. And now , today, they have recieved the verbal commendation of the City Council and the LAPD. They will probably be granted via emergency resolution the ability to camp on the grass all night and day! Moving the tents at 6 AM is a huge drag!

Nicolas and Sharon bring up great arguments and it need to be addressed. As me being apart of lasts nights "logistics committee" I am stating that I am not more qualified then any of these people and just because I got on the conference does not mean these peoples opinion are any less valuable. You can't keep ignoring and moving forward THAT IS NOT A SOLUTION to unity. These decisions were made by 5 people 3 or four of which lived in Irvine. Santa Ana is the 4th largest DENSILY populated city in the United States of America and it is being over-looked although there has been a growing number of people saying that Santa Ana should be the place of focus. The 1% tends to ignore people and move forward without a majority consent, let's not act like them. I wouldn't want to be apart of a logistics committee that everyone thinks they don't listen or value their opinion because they didn't make it to a phone conference. Everyone should get an equal say so and everyone should be qualified for this "logistics committee." This is getting out of control and needs to be addressed period.

Organizer Aaron, You were missing in action tonight. Your comment is totally misleading. We have not overlooked Santa Ana. I told you that on the call. I told you I was in favor of moving to Santa Ana on October 22nd, the date you had picked for the occupation there. We discussed that it was important that the financial district in Irvine be targeted on October 15th as it is considered as the financial district of Orange County. That we would occupy Irvine and as the people came into occupation, we would put it to general assembly for consensus to move the occupation to Santa Ana on October 22nd. It makes sense to have a GA when the people are together. The people are not together yet. I am very disappointed that you have not communicated with me or anyone else on the Logistics Committee. You were to report back so we all could go with you on Friday to Santa Ana for a mini day of protesting and handing out flyers. You told me that you would work with our online Media people, yet the website is all about Santa Ana on October 22nd. You said you were going to support Occupy Orange County in Irvine. I would like to very much to see that support, and in turn I am very happy to support OOC in Santa Ana on October 22nd. Once the GA gives the green light for Santa Ana on October 22nd those in occupation in Irvine will hand out flyers encouraging everyone to occupy Santa Ana. Then the seat of government in Orange County will be occupied. It is unique to Orange County because we are occupying as a county not a city. This solution is win-win and it includes everyone!!! I hope to hear from you soon. D'Marie

I've said this elsewhere. Since it's already in the press, I guess arguing about whether or not we'll be in Irvine in the 15th is kind of moot. So could we get an itinerary for that day ASAP? Since it's the global and international day of protest, I think it's important to make a showing. But since the Orange County branch of the protests are truthfully just getting started, I think you/we should plan at least 2-3 hours for a Preliminary General Assembly meeting so we can discuss a long-term location more openly and arrive at a decision more democratically. Not to undervalue the work you've put in so far, but it's only the tip of a very large iceberg. Similarly we should start thinking about carpools from various parts of the county so that we can get as many potential participants to that meeting as possible, so that the decision can be as representative as we can make it. Are we going to have translators for people who don't speak English as their first language? They deserve to be included. Facebook isn't the center of the world, and there's no reason we shouldn't start reaching out to people in Santa Ana, Garden Grove and elsewhere, right now. I understand that there are only 10 days before the planned "big day", and if we're going to move forward with doing that in Irvine, then I think we--as organizers, all of us--need to send the message very clearly that this is only preliminary, and that's we're going to be proactive about including people. "You should have said something" is the most surefire way to destroy a movement form the inside out. Part of "grassroots" means seeking out potential allies and asking for their input, not presuming that they know about you and waiting for them to come to you. If there's anything you'd like the E&E committee to start organizing--speeches, music, an arts & crafts hour--it would help to know ASAP.

It doesn't matter if it's in the press, because we can also ocupy one in Santa Ana. I vote each city should have their own occupation and you choose which city. Claiming to represent OC was a horrible idea i nthe first place. Esp. being white middle aged people for the most part. Our occupation doesn't have to be Irvine's occupation. We dont want to draw bad attention, but when the decisions are chosen by an elite (meaning early and people who got the invite's first), we have to call it out as not part of the ows movement.

One of things about the Internet is that its easy to sit behind a screen and give your opinions and ideas. Everyone has them. But then when it actually comes time to do the work a fraction of the people show up. We had almost 100 people RSVPed to be on a simple Conference Call to introduce what was in the works and to invite people into committees. 39 People showed up and all they had to do was pick up a cell phone!!! I have done more than just open a web page. I traveled to Occupy LA, I was there from 2:30 PM till 9:30 PM on Sunday. I talked with people who have been in the occupation from the beginning. I witnessed the General Assemby and the fiasco that it is. Another person witnessed GA in operation in San Diego...same thing. I am tired of answering everyone's bitching and quite frankly that's what it is. The logistics committee is comprised of young and mature people. They are working together wonderfully. Two on the committee have years of experience putting on demonstrations in Orange County and are well connected with the Irvine City officials. And they are not all from Irvine. I am not from Irvine. I have planned over 500 events with my non profit and have organized Plan of Action meetings for over 400 sales agents; coordinating everything from travel, lodging, site venue, catering, media, print, and general everyday operations...I know how to plan events. We already have media coverage. We have professional PR people on board. I

The momentum is growing by leaps and bounds everyday . . . you can be part of the process . . . or you can sit on the sidelines...whether you are involved in committees as volunteers or not . . . you can show up to occupy with us . . . or you don't have to. You can be in Irvine on the 15th or you can go to Santa Ana on the 22nd or you can do both or do neither. I really don't care. I will be in the Financial Distriction on October 15th...with my signs in hand . . . whether I am alone or with 5,000 people. Just because someone voices their opinion is it not "bitching". It is an observation. I didn't know about Occupy Orange County until after the initial conference call. So to say that orginal participates are the core group in a misrepresention. I listen to the call and it seems because the numbers were so few there were only a few people who actually volunteered to organize. Now that it is growing it is time to disperse this power. Absolute Power corrupts absolutely. The only focus should be to let the government and Wall Street realize the American public is disgusted and frustrated will their dictatorship. Since this was an organic movement everyone needs to be adaptable to what is happening. I am an expert and networking and PR. If you will notice your numbers have jumped 100 in one day on Facebook. I was asked to be a liason for education and entertainment due to my connection to the music business here in Orange County which I would be happy to do as long as I continue to have automony. I am a free thinking American and will not have commitees dictate to me what to do. If this continues to be a "do what and say and that's it" forum.. I am outta here. And if you thinking Ron Anger doesn't know what he is talking you would be sorely mistaken. You would be very fortunate to have his insight. and experience.

Bitching is different that standing up for principle. Our principles are not united . Some expect true leaderless, grassroots , face to face dialoguing between equals rather than having "all the problems sewn up" before we even start. Many of us want to be involved in something which each of us creates, together, from the roots up, a revolution. Most likely, you are too! Your work is admirable!! So hopefully, we can create a movement together. Each needs to understand and support one another and be in solidarity! We argue to hammer out principles and come to a consensus on the core issues, so we know we are all on the same page. The people UNITED will never be defeated. So, I won't be staying on w/ this group, but I wish you Good Luck! Much Success in creating a movement!!! See you on the 15th!

"It is unique to Orange County because we are occupying as a county not a city. This solution is win-win and it includes everyone!!! " This is the problem, you absolutely believe your way of doing this includes everyone. Clearly you and I , and the majority of this movement have different definitions of 'everyone'. I'm not by any way lashing out at you, but your method of "This is how 5 of us agreed upon, and that's the way it'll be" sounds very much like the corruptness we are trying to stand against. We don't need this in our movement. Your best interest should be in the people in this movement, the people in this movement decide what happens, the people in this movement have a say and should be listened, especially when the majority is trying to get through to you. This needs to be a democracy, and I'm failing at seeing this as one. What was the point of having that poll asking whether the occupation should be held at Santa Ana or Irvine, if you were just going to ignore those results?

Now, we have work to do, and I strongly suggest that we get to it. So please contact the Civic liaison Committee ASAP. Best regards to my fellow patriots! Also, I have been trying to contact Andre for three days now. What's up. Can't do business like this.

How does everyone feel about a meeting on Monday evening October 10th. at my house in Fountain Valley? This is just to get to know each other over some noshes and brainstorm some ideas for Occupy OC with emphasis on outreach and the long term.
