Promoting an Eclectic Librarianship in Rural Appalachia Do you know how to have Fun? . . .
An interview with a former WebJunction director.
Former director of WebJunction, Marilyn Mason, was once interviewed concerning her career in libraries. When asked to use one word to define her career, Ms. Mason stated, “Fun.” Ms. Mason said she had fun because she only accepted positions which she was strongly interested in and challenged by. Here are a few tips that Ms. Mason shared with other librarians: Networking is Important. It is important to make connections with people who are established in the field. People who are on committees together frequently become important connections throughout the rest of your career. Just Ask. Meet the elected officials in your city, business leaders, and other Influential’s including the press. These connections can prove invaluable to your success in your immediate position if you just engage with them. Participate in Professional Associations. You can make needed changes in your area of librarianship just by being a member in an organization. Network within your peers and make a difference. Publish.

MORE ABOUT Word of Mouth

Your work experience will get you in the door, but it is often something else that will get you hired for a job such as community involvement or published works. Desire to Make Change. This should be a motivator for you in your library environment. Be a part of the answer rather than a member of the status quo. Take Risks. Challenge brings risks; even financial ones. New projects are often only funded for a year. So find funding to keep your projects and your position at your library open longer. This article thanks to Rachel Van Noord. Managing Yourself While Managing Change . . .
So be managable!
The greatest advantage a library possesses is the foundation a future thinking librarian can build. Skills already utilized in libraries are the dedication to knowledge, information access, education and training. Today’s library is an inherent learning organization with the capacity to become stronger as it changes, meet new challenges, incorporate new technologies, provide enhanced services and meet the challenge of an ever-changing information environment. When it comes to the new librarian, however, those who are in an organization longer are the most resistant to change. There is also the issue of denial when faced with the need for change in order to survive the advent of more technology.

PRESENTATIONS FOR YOUR INFORMATION AND PUBLIC USE

Perhaps the greatest illustration expressing the challenge of successful tactics toward change, are the attitudes of staff and the ability of management to transform resistance into commitment. Developing libraries which conquer and succeed are those which become units of change through adopting strategies and responses: prioritizing; being flexible; embracing new ideas; and being imaginative and creative. First steps are not for the faint of heart. Simple Win #1: Put People First Your personnel are the most valuable resource to your organization; and motivation, leadership and communication are the keys for the successful management of those individuals through a 'people first' mentality. Building trust with your staff, initiating change slowly, and practicing the sharing of information will create a climate which fulfills the organization’s goals. People hear what they see, so let them see you adding value to your library by your developing into a better person as well as a better employee. Progress in management begins when managers are transformed. Simple Win #2: Utilize Everyone’s Abilities A worker’s needs and a worker’s skills are tools which a manager can use to communicate and motivate personal performance and professional development. When dealing with capable employees, a manager manages best when managing little. A structure which releases creativity and pride in the organization’s culture cultivates motivation through interesting and challenging endeavors – exactly what good management should strive for: achievement, recognition, work which offers personal satisfaction, responsibility and advancement. Any system of motivation depends on the manager to create a supportive environment to reinforce performance, encourage motives and values in harmony with the organization, and communicate clear, definable and attainable goals. It is not so much managing that the new librarian requires, but rather leadership and direction for their energies. Simple Win #3:

IS YOUR RURAL LIBRARY A SETTLEMENT LIBRARY? IT'S ALL ABOUT ACTION . . .
A 'Settlement Library' is a social enterprise and symbolic site of collective memory for each individual rural community it serves. A 'Settlement Library' encourages individual learning and self-mastery as a way to address change personally,

Look Ahead If it is true that small change can lead to big rewards, then perhaps the fastest step toward change might involve focusing on the big picture: a shared vision of the future that will guide efforts and learning opportunities. A clear vision, practical strategic goals, management objective, effective communication are all a means to an end: learning a new way to address change and to explore new ideas. This process involves vulnerability and transformation. Like minded people with similar objectives, interests and abilities help to cement a library’s role in the community as essential. Create relationships in your corner of librarianship which will foster opportunities for greatness, and opportunities for a helping hand where everyone contributes and everyone benefits through people managing change together.

socially, environmentally, and politically. A ‘Settlement Library’ is a trusted neighborhood think-tank, equitable source for civic thinking, and clearinghouse for community-wide resources.

Do You Know How To Market Your Library? . .
Word of Mouth Marketing is the answer.
Word-Of-Mouth marketing sounds self-explanatory, but it does entail more effort than just telling someone about something. It is more purposeful than that and can be a powerful tool. Its purpose is to partner with people that other people look up to and follow (team leaders, religious officials, etc.). Here’s how it works: Choose a target        List the products, services, and programs you have along with what benefits they hold for your public. Decide what measurable outcome you would like to achieve. Find influential people in your target market: listen to and recruit them to help you spread the word. Create short key messages about the product you are pushing; work with your Influencers to ensure that the messages will appeal to the intended audience. Decide which communication tools to use (blogs, YouTube, etc.). Put your message out via the chosen tools and let the Influencers take over by commenting on the message and /or passing it along to others. Evaluate your success by looking at how many people acted on the message.

Housekeeping Tricks of the Trade . . .
For the rural librarian, funds may be scarce for housekeeping. Here are some easy solutions to everyday problems in the library that won’t break the bank.

You Need a Stain Removal Kit!
Quick action is often the key to success with stain removal. Gather all these home remedies and keep them where they are easy to locate and out of the reach of children. The wrong solution could permanently damage or destroy fabric or carpet. An inappropriate cleaning solution may not only set the stain, but also damage or discolor the fabric or cloth. “The librarian must go outside the library building and talk to the citizens. The person to person approach is the most effective means of advertising library programs.” Carol LaClair

THE JOKE
What do you call a person whose library books are overdue? A bookkeeper.

THE WORD
“But when the fullness of the time was come, God sent forth his son made of a woman, made under the law. To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons. And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father. Wherefore, thou art no more a servant, but a son; and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ.”
