very year we welcome spring as a sign of renewal and progress. After this winter’s prolonged cold-weather period we can finally enjoy the pleasant temperatures and sunshine that South Florida is famous for. While we watch the news reports of the last snow and ice storms ravaging our northern states, we welcome our visitors from those colder climates. And we realize just HOW LUCKY WE ARE ! Of course not everything is perfect with the economy still in dire need of rebuilding and with the occasional hurricane visiting us, but in the overall scheme of things FLORIDA is the place we choose to live. And rightly so. Where else can you see alligators in their natural habitat and Mickey & Co. in their not-so-natural habitat – all in the same day ? Where else can you get a sunburn at the beach during the day and endless entertainment during the night ? Where else can you go flats fishing on a secluded sandbar and go cruising the intracoastal dining scene - all on the same boat trip ? Only in Florida ! On this happy note, let’s enjoy all that Florida has to offer and let’s have some FUN. Sincerely,

Sven Budzisch Sven Budzisch

community news
Wine and Dine Weekend to Benefit Harvest Drive
hanksgiving was months ago, but the Harvest Drive is still hard at work. Now in its 19th year, this Weston-based food drive has expanded into a full-fledged corporation serving Broward County’s hungry all year round. On Saturday, April 2nd, Broward Collision is pleased to present the WestonLawyers.com 2011 Wine & Dine to benefit the Harvest Drive. This event is spearheaded by several longtime Harvest Drive supporters. “Michael Freedland and Anthony Russo from WestonLawyers.com and Keith Petron from Broward Collision came to me and said they wanted to do something more to help the Harvest Drive,” explains Harvest Drive Founder Renee Herman. “They’ve always been so generous and supportive and to take on this event is incredible.” Herman is hoping that in addition to raising much needed funds, the Wine & Dine will raise awareness about the Harvest Drive. It started as a small food drive at Country Isles Elementary School and has grown into a massive mission, with eight collection sites and over 125 schools now participating throughout Broward County. Thanks to these efforts, last year 1,582 families received a Thanksgiving meal plus ten bags of groceries, as well other necessities.

Mary Moreno, Patti Bradley, Renee Herman and Carolyn Burk are busy planning the Harvest Drive’s first Wine & Dine fundraising event.

“But all that food is gone now and these families are still hungry,” states Herman. “Now we’re taking the Harvest Drive to the next level. We’re helping those in need no matter what time of year it is. Sadly, there is need today, tomorrow and everyday.” You can help the Harvest Drive by supporting the Wine & Dine weekend, April 2-4th. It begins on Saturday evening with the Wine & Dine dinner. The evening will feature a wine tasting, delicious meal, wonderful entertainment, as well as a silent and live

auction. The fun continues on Monday at the Rotary Club of Weston’s WestonLawyers.com Scholarship Golf Classic. This event raises thousands of dollars for Weston Rotary scholarships. These scholarships are awarded to Cypress Bay and Western high school students who have demonstrated academic achievement, involvement in community service activities and financial need. According to Herman, promoting the two events together is only natural because not only do both programs benefit children, but the Rotary has been a huge Harvest Drive supporter over the years. “Not only do they donate much-needed food items, but they donate manpower. The Harvest Drive would not be the success it is without our Rotary volunteers.” Help support the Harvest Drive by attending the WestonLawyers.com Wine & Dine presented by Broward Collision. The fun starts at 7pm on Saturday, April 2nd at the Hyatt Regency Bonaventure. Tickets are $150 per person or $1250 for a table of ten. For more information or to purchase tickets, please contact Event Coordinator Mary Moreno at (954) 6469854. To learn more about the Harvest Drive visit www.harvestdriveflorida.com. y definition, a hero is someone who is admired or remarkably brave. B’nai Aviv Synagogue will honor its heroes at its gala dinner dance on Saturday, March 27th. “Celebrating B’nai Aviv’s Superstars” will recognize seven temple members for their service and commitment. It will also honor Broward Sheriff’s Officer Maury Hernandez as the first recipient of the Hero-Gibor Award. That award will be presented by Broward County Sheriff Al Lamberti on behalf of the members of B’nai Aviv. Sgt. Maury Hernandez was a security officer at the synagogue who was injured in the line of duty. He was shot in the head by a motorcyclist during a routine traffic stop in 2007. Despite his life threatening injuries, he continues to improve and hopes to return to full time duty as a BSO detective in the near future. “Maury holds a very special place in our hearts and we will be forever grateful for the service he gave to B’nai Aviv as a security officer to our early childhood education program during the time of his unfortunate accident,” states Meredith Chandler, gala chairperson. The event will also honor temple members: Michelle and Craig Donner; Alice and Ralph Francis; Ethel and Art Ginsburg; Adele and Dr. David Pick; Stacy and Scott Silver; Ali and Dr. Michael Wasserman; and Marissa and Dr. Michael Zoldan. Sgt. Maury Hernandez will be the first recipient “Each of our seven honoree couples has of Temple B’nai Aviv’s Hero-Gibor Award. provided support to the various branches of B’nai Aviv. Whether it is Sisterhood, Youth Department, Religious School, the Choir, or Early Childhood Education Center, our honorees have provided outstanding service and commitment in making B’nai Aviv a place for the community to feel at home,” shares Chandler. Each will be presented with a commemorative gift. The evening gala will begin with a cocktail hour complete with hors d’oeuvres stations and a cocktail lounge under the stars. Once the ballroom opens for dinner, the honorees will be recognized. Then the night will continue with an exquisitely catered dinner by Greenseid Caterers, music generously donated by Tekiah Orchestra and Entertainment, and décor provided by Petal Productions. There will also be a silent auction. The event is open to the community. The cost is $118 per person. According to Chandler, the money raised will go towards supporting B’nai Aviv’s education, youth and ritual programs. A portion of the proceeds will also be donated to the Police Benevolent Association in honor of Sgt. Maury Hernandez. The “Celebrating B’nai Aviv’s Superstars” gala dinner dance will take place at Temple B’nai Aviv on Sunday, March 27th at 6pm. It is located at 1410 Indian Trace. Chiropractic? Why Not?
“A Doctor’s Confession toWest Broward”
.S , perhaps a confession can help clear the air so there’s no misunderstanding. Before I talk about my confession, though, let me say a few other things rst. Let me start by explaining the photo in this letter. You know, when I meet people in town they usually say, “Oh, yeah, I know you, you’re Dr. Rick. I’ve seen your ad with that picture of you and your family.” Well, I’m the guy on the le . Twenty years ago something happened to me that changed my life forever. I was a junior in high school and I started getting migraines. I had su ered from intense headaches since childhood. Over the years, I consulted many medical doctors, and specialists. I went through all kinds of tests, MRIs, and treatments. I tried every drug in the market; our medicine cabinet looked like a hospital’s in rmary. And still, nothing helped. But there’s more… A friend of mine convinced me to give a chiropractor a try. e chiropractor examined me, took X-rays, and then “adjusted” my spine. e adjustment did not hurt; it actually felt good. And guess what…I started feeling so much better! From daily migraines, I went down to three a week, and then to once in a great while. at’s when I realized that I wanted to become a chiropractor and help others. at’s how it happened! It’s strange how life is, because now people come to see me with their migraines. ey also come to me with their chronic pain, neck pain, shoulder/arm pain, whiplash from car accidents, backaches, ear infections, asthma, allergies, numbness in limbs, athletic injuries, carpal tunnel syndrome, just to name a few. Here’s what some of my patients had to say: “Due to an auto accident, I su ered om severe neck pain, vertigo and I could not raise my arm to comb my hair. Now I am symptom ee with no medication and I can do everything I could not do before.” – E. Heaney, Hollywood, FL “ anks to the DRX and the doctors, I no longer have chronic sciatic pain. It’s been a long time since I have taken pain medication.” – J. Walker, Miramar Dear Friend,

I

Several times a day patients thank me for helping them with their health problems. But I can’t really take the credit. My confession is that I’ve never healed anyone of anything. What I do is perform a speci c spinal adjustment to remove nerve pressure, and the body responds by healing itself. We get tremendous results. It’s a simple as that! Forty- ve million Americans no longer have health insurance, and those who do have found that their bene ts have been greatly reduced. at’s where chiropractic comes in. I have a signi cantly lower fee plan so that more people are able to a ord the care they need. An entire week of care in my o ce costs what you could pay for one visit elsewhere. Another way to save…studies show that chiropractic can double your immune capacity, naturally and without drugs. e immune system ghts colds, the u, and other ailments. So you may not be running o to the doctor as much. Studies show that people actually pay less for their long-term overall health care expenses if they are seeing a chiropractor. You Bene t from an Amazing O er-Look, it shouldn’t cost you an arm and a leg to correct your health. You are going to write a check to someone for your health care expenses, you may as well

write one for a lesser amount for chiropractic. When you bring in this article (by / / ) you will receive my entire new patient exam for . at’s with x-rays, biomechanical exam, history and consultation…the whole ball of wax. is exam could cost you elsewhere. e law says that I must tell YOU THAT YOU OR ANY OTHER PERSON RESPONSIBLE FOR PAYMENT HAS THE RIGHT TO REFUSE TO PAY, CANCEL PAYMENT, OR BE REIMBURSED FOR TREATMENT, WHICH IS PERFORMED AS A RESULT OF AND WITHIN HOURS OF RESPONDING TO THE ADVERTISEMENT FOR DISCOUNTED, OR REDUCED FEE FOR SERVICE, EXAMINATION, OR TREATMENT. Great care at a great fee…Please, I hope that there’s no misunderstanding about quality of care just because I have a lower exam fee. You’ll get great care at a great fee. My quali cations…I’m a graduate of Life College and have been practicing for over years. I’ve been entrusted to take care of tiny babies to pro athletes that you may know. I am constantly going to seminars and updating my knowledge so I can give my patients the latest information and techniques of my profession. My assistants are Mylene and Nyrie – really great people. An Advanced Approach to Skin Care

D

By adriana Gomez, dermaSwiSS director of SaleS and traininG

ermaSwiss is an exclusive brand of quality skin care products from Switzerland dedicated to preventing premature aging and maintaining the skin’s youthful glow. Elements Laser Center and Med Spa is featuring the DermaSwiss Bioclarifying Treatment this month. Its unique combination of Glycolic Acid and Vitamin C, keeps the skin healthy, and increases collagen/elastin synthesis. Results are visible after the first appointment, with maximum results after four sessions. We all know the importance of having a facial. Imagine the benefits of having a daily skin care routine. DermaSwiss Vitamin C is recommended in anti-oxidants, whitening and mature skin treatments. Vitamin C diminishes the effects of freeradicals, prevents dark spots, keeps a healthy skin, and stimulates collagen synthesis. The Glycolic Acids are used in cosmetics as moisturizers, emollients and exfoliants. They have been used to rejuvenate tired skin, reduce the occurrence of wrinkles and fine lines, clean and flush pores, help even skin tone, help diminish and reduce any noticeable effects of scarring, which makes them indispensable in most acne protocols.  This beauty treatment helps remove excess accumulations of dead cells from the corneum  layers of the epidermis by reducing the effects of acne through progressive micro exfoliation produced by alpha hydroxy and fruits acids. It diminishes fine lines, wrinkles and pigmentation, and combats premature aging. It also contains antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties. Imagine the thrill that you will secretly harbor when you know that you are the envy of all your friends because you have the most beautiful skin any of them have ever seen.   Do not forget about sunscreen. DermaSwiss offer a moisturizing and noncomedogenic formula. DermaSun SPF-25 protects the skin by blocking solar rays and preventing cellular oxidation. It contains essential and compatible filters that ensure protection from harmful UVA and UVB rays. Scientific studies indicate that a regular use of a sunscreen can prevent the appearance of hyper pigmentation, premature aging and skin lesions. Re-apply during the day for increased protection. Elements Laser Center & Med Spa is a full-service medical aesthetic center and day spa offering an extensive menu of treatment options ranging from anti-aging treatments to skin and body rejuvenation, as well as laser hair removal and tanning. Elements Laser Center & Med Spa is located at 1916 Weston Road. Call (954) 8889525 to schedule a consultation or appointment. All A’s Again for Weston Schools

“A”

By Stacey BomSer

is for Absolutely Amazing Accomplishment. For the seventh consecutive year, all of the Weston public schools received an “A” grade in the State of Florida’s A-plus grading plan. This is no small feat. According to Susan Sasse, Principal of Gator Run Elementary School, “Continuing the tradition of excellence in an ‘A’ rated school is quite a challenge. The state increases the proficiency standards each year, which raises the bar for all our schools and students.” Mrs. Sasse credits her school’s academic success to the strong partnership between the school and parents. Heather Hedman-DeVaughn, Principal of Manatee Bay Elementary School, agrees that parent involvement is crucial. “The success of Manatee Bay is a direct result of the partnership, commitment and dedication of all Stakeholders (administration, teachers, staff, students, parents and community) working together for the common goal of high student achievement. The Weston City Commission recently recognized the principals of all nine Weston public schools plus the Imagine Charter School at Weston for their academic achievements. Each principal was presented with two coveted crystal book awards honoring their individual achievement as well as the achievements of the school faculty, the students and the school community.

The Weston City Commission recognized the Weston public school principals for achieving “A” grades for the seventh consecutive year.

t’s spring cleaning time. But before you toss everything in the trash, or donate it to charity, why not consider listing it on an online auction. Chances are there are things in your house that will sell on eBay in seven days or less. With a little bit of research you can find ways to clean out your closet and put some extra cash in your pocket. But how do you know what will sell? There are many items in your home that are hot commodities on eBay. Top categories include consumer electronics (such as iPods, PDAs, stereos), designer shoes and handbags, sporting goods, collectibles, and so much more. But keep in mind, just because you paid a lot for an item, does not mean that it will be worth much on eBay. You must do your research and see what your item is selling for now to know if there is a demand for it and for how much. If you want to sell your item yourself, you must create an eBay account, open a Paypal account (so you can get paid online), and have a digital camera. You will need to enter credit card or bank information to Paypal and eBay, however both sites are safe and secure. Once you have registered, you can start listing. Begin by taking a picture of your item to post with a detailed description. Typically, auctions run for seven days. If the item is purchased, buyers pay either via online methods or another arranged way. Once paid, you must pack the item and ship it to the buyer.

I

Electonics are always top sellers on eBay.

1375 Shotgun Road Weston, FL

While it sounds simple, selling successfully on eBay takes organization, an understanding of what will sell, and lots of time. Once your items are listed on eBay, potential buyers will email you with lots of questions. To succeed, you need to be timely, polite, and professional.  If this all sounds too overwhelming and time consuming you can always give your items to an eBay trading assistant like Just Sell It. Trading assistants do all the work for you and just send you a check. Just Sell It sells your items on eBay on consignment. Unlike a local consignment store or pawn shop, if your item does not sell within seven days it is returned to you. Consignment shops typically charge upwards of 50% commission. Pawnshops may buy your item for a lot less than you would get on eBay or sell it back to you later at market rate. Just Sell It’s commission is about 39%, inclusive of eBay and Paypal fees.  Just Sell It makes it all so easy. We will pick up your items, then photograph and create your eBay listings. Once the item is sold, we will collect payment, professionally pack and ship the items, and then send you a check. What more could you ask!  Just Sell It sells through eBay auctions and directly to the public. Please view our website at www.justsellit.com to view merchandise at our online store. All items are sold at significant savings. For more information, contact Lisa Feldman at (954) 295-5418 or email her at [email protected].

Take Head Injuries Seriously
By howard citron

Accidents happen.

They can even happen to you.

ome of the most common injuries in a car accident or slip and fall case involve a victim’s head. A blow to the head can seem minor at first. It might not cause any immediate pain, bruising, or bleeding. However, hours later it can turn serious, even fatal. It is very common for someone who has had a fall or been in a car accident to appear perfectly fine immediately after the impact but then suddenly and rapidly deteriorate. After the “accident” – which doesn’t have to be serious at all – a person can seem perfectly normal, but there may be a silent skull fracture or a broken blood vessel bleeding in the brain or between the skull and the brain. As blood leaks from a ruptured artery and puts pressure on the brain, the classic symptoms of a traumatic brain injury begin to appear: nausea, severe headache, glassy eyes, or sudden sleepiness. Symptoms can take anywhere from 5 minutes to 3 hours – or even several days – to begin. For anyone involved in a car accident, sports injury, or just a slip in the driveway, recognizing the signs of brain injury early is critical. Preventing permanent brain damage depends on getting to a hospital within the first few hours because damage caused by brain swelling often is irreversible. Trauma teams are taught that when people have been in a car crash and someone involved in the accident dies, they should assume that everyone else has serious injuries – even if they look good and say they feel fine. If you are involved in a car accident or slip and fall and suffer head trauma please remember these rules: ▸ Go to the emergency room. Even if you feel like everything is fine, it is mandatory for someone in an emergency setting to evaluate your medical condition. ▸ Mandate that a CT scan of your head is performed. Physical examination alone may not be sufficient to conclusively diagnose a brain injury or internal complications. ▸ If you experience the “classic signs and symptoms” of a head trauma, advise family members of what you are feeling so that they can advocate for you with your treating health care providers. An emergency room that is busy with lots of patients may be eager to send you home despite your medical history. Family members can help you demand admission to the hospital for further necessary evaluation. ▸ Following discharge from the emergency room, make sure that you are supervised by family members who will be actively looking for changes in your mental status. The sooner these changes are discovered, the sooner you can be taken back to the emergency room. ▸ Follow-up with your primary care physician following an emergency room visit. It is best not to take any chances with your medical condition and have it re-evaluated by someone who knows your medical history best. Country Isles’ Guest Author Inspires Students
By Stacey BomSer

T

his year’s Author-In-Residence at Country Isles Elementary School was a special treat for both the students and faculty. For not only is Jayne Bonilla a noted children’s book author, she is also a Weston resident whose children attended Country Isles. To her, it was a gift to be able to give back to the school that gave so much to her family. As in past years, the day began with two presentations by the guest author to the student body, one geared toward students in the younger grades and the other for older students. Bonilla was then the guest of honor at a special luncheon sponsored by the PTA. Each year the school holds a contest to select which students will dine with the guest author. According to Phyllis Kay, the school’s reading/curriculum specialist and Author-In-Residence coordinator, the contest was inspired by Bonilla’s beloved book, Shirt for Dessert, which deals with the importance of eating healthy foods. Students in kindergarten through second grade were invited to create a picture illustrating what makes a good meal, while students in grades three through five were asked to write an essay answering, “Why is it important to eat healthy foods?”
Author Jayne Bonilla poses with Country Isles Elementary School students following a special luncheon to reward the winners of a picture/essay contest.

Author Jayne Bonilla shares one of her delightful children’s stories with fourth graders during a Writer’s Workshop.

Following the luncheon, Bonilla hosted a Writer’s Workshop for select fourth grade students. She used this forum to share one of her new stories, as well as some writing tips. Bonilla began by reiterating her writing philosophy. “Today is really about creativity and authenticity, being true to yourself.” She explained that the key to good writing is to CREATE, an acronym she shared during her morning presentation. “C is for courage; share your own slice of individuality and don’t worry what others think. R is for reach; dig deep inside you and get in touch with your feelings. E is for express yourself. A is for authentic; be unique. T is for thoughts, where your ideas stem from. And E is for emotions,” recapped Bonilla, explaining that these elements are essential to being a good writer. She then went on to identify the two types of writing: inspired and invited. According to Bonilla, inspired writing is when you write about something that means something to you, whereas invited writing is when you are asked to write something, such as homework. “My strength is inspired writing. When I am invited to write, I always start by thinking about why I was asked to write. This leads to inspiration,” explained Bonilla. “You need to learn to change your thought process so that everything you write is inspired and meaningful.” She then shared her secrets to becoming a strong writer, using yet another acronym. W always Wonder, never stop asking questions, be curious R always Relate, get into the head/mind of your reader I always rely on your Imagination T always Translate onto paper what you want to say E always Engage, get your reader involved and excited R always Rewrite, don’t throw away your work because there may be something there. Author Jayne Bonilla engages student support to illustrate her tips to becoming a better writer.

This led Bonilla to share her favorite quote: “It is better to improve than it is to prove.” Victor Paes-Leme, one of the fourth graders invited to attend the Writer’s Workshop, took this to mean “It’s better to make something better and how you want it to be than to show it off.” In addition to sharing her tricks of the trade with the Country Isles students, Bonilla also shared one of her current projects. She read Sheila’s Magic Wand, a new picture book she is hoping to publish. It’s a beautifully written story with a powerful message to share the magic in you. Although written as a children’s book, its underlying message of hope and peace and recovery is an inspiration to all ages. Bonilla has a knack for writing whimsical yet inspirational stories. Her first book, If Hurricane’s Were Candy Canes, was about overcoming tragedy and looking at the good in things. “It was inspired by a little girl I met while volunteering in a tent city following Hurricane Andrew,” she said. “I was so touched by Millie that I just had to write and share her story. Here was a little girl who had lost everything, but she did not miss her toys and stuff. She was just happy she had her family.” Bonilla donated $70,000 in proceeds from the sale of that book to hurricane recovery efforts in the U.S. and Caribbean. Although she has only published two books, Bonilla says she has written over 25 children’s stories, including four more stories following the adventures of the Barley family first introduced in Shirt for Dessert. Bonilla has also written an adult psychological thriller. “I’m very excited about that project. It was a different type of writing for me.” You can learn more about Jayne Bonilla and her latest projects by reading her blog (http:// jaynebonilla.wordpress.com) or following her on twitter (@ jaynebonilla). Students solicited pledges from family and friends for the number of laps they could run around the specially-designed FundRunners track. Teachers marked the students’ laps on the back of their Fun Run t-shirts. Most of the students completed 30 of the maximum 36 laps. That brought in a lot of money for the school. PTA President Jenn Kaiser says the first ever Everglades Elementary School FundRunners Fun Run was a huge success. “This event was amazing! Gator Run Second Graders Enjoy Edible Education on Tasty Tuesday
By Stacey BomSer

W

hat do Rice Krispies Treats and Fruit Roll-ups have to do with math? More than you would think. Second graders at Gator Run Elementary School learned fractions using these tasty treats. Once a month, on Tasty Tuesday, students enjoy an edible education. The concept was introduced last year by Denise Boehm, who teaches the gifted and high achiever class. She explains that Tasty Tuesday is a hands-on means of teaching the fundamentals of education – reading, writing and arithmetic – as well as problem solving skills and even public speaking. “This is project-based learning. The students get so much more out of this than a basic lesson.” Of course, the students don’t realize their teachers are sneaking lessons into their special snack sessions. “Students learn sequencing by following the recipe directions step by step,” explains Mrs. Boehm. “They also develop problem solving skills. For instance, one table discovered they could use a textbook to help flatten their Rice Krispies Treats to make the Cereal Sushi.” Tasty Tuesday also reinforces reading and writing skills. Students copy each month’s recipe into their Tasty Tuesday Cookbook, listing all the ingredients and the direc-

writing and communication skills.” The cookbook is presented to parents on the final Tasty Tuesday. On that day the students become the teachers. “The child directs the parent on how to prepare the recipe. Then they share snack and write their review together,” explains Mrs. Boehm. “Many times this is the first time parents have seen their children take on a leadership role. They are always impressed with how eloquent and responDenise Boehm, Gator Run’s second grade gifted teacher, shows students how to prepare “Cereal Sushi.”

tions to create the yummy treat. But the real writing comes after snack time, when the students write their reviews. They include what they liked about the recipe and how they could improve it. Maybe these kids have been exposed to too many episodes of Top Chef on TV, because there was no shortage of suggestions when Mrs. Boehm’s class discussed ways to improve upon the Cereal Sushi recipe. One student suggested dipping the candy sushi into chocolate sauce to simulate soy sauce and another offered the option of adding green frosting for wasabi. Other suggestions may have been more befitting of Bizarre Foods. One student suggested using crushed potato chips instead of Rice Krispies Treats. Another recommended using Oreo crumbs instead of red sprinkles to simulate the sushi roe. With their minds full of ideas and their bellies full of candy sushi, the students all sat down with their writer’s notebooks to work on their reviews. “Don’t worry about spelling. Remember, this is your first draft,” encouraged Mrs. Boehm as her class began the assignment. She sees the Tasty Tuesday Cookbook as a wonderful teaching tool. “Now, at this point in the school year, we talk about showing your voice with your writing, using strong vocabulary, and focusing on sentence structure.” She says it’s also a great way to track the students’ progress over the course of the school year. “It’s amazing to see how their writing has improved, as well as their hand-

sible their children have become.” Of course for the students, Tasty Tuesday is all about the food. The Cereal Sushi, made with Rice Krispies Treats, Fruit Roll-ups, Swedish Fish, and red sugar, was a big hit with many of the students. “I liked making it because I got to learn the basics of making real sushi,” shared Jean Qian, who also enjoys real sushi. Both Jean and classmate Hanna Stockel liked October’s Spider Pudding Pie better. It was a Halloween-themed Tasty Tuesday project made with chocolate pudding, Oreos, M&M’s and Twizzlers. “I liked that best because it had a lot of stuff I like to eat,” says Hanna. Tyler Decker is not picky. He’s liked all of the projects. “Tasty Tuesday is fun, especially because we get two snacks that day. One before lunch and another after.” Mrs. Boehm says the teachers try to tie the recipe to a lesson the children are studying. “Our first Tasty Tuesday we made caramel apples because we had just finished studying Johnny Appleseed.” Last year, the students created an Edible Earth with each ingredient representing one part of the earth’s structure. Students used a maraschino cherry as the core, marshmallow as the outer core, a Rice Krispies Treat as the mantle, and crushed cookies as the earth’s crust. What could be better to a second grader than studying the solar system one bite at a time?! www.ourcityweston.com

March is Colon Cancer Awareness Month: Act Now to Prevent Colon Cancer
By Steven d. wexner. md - facS, frcS, frcS (ed) cleveland clinic colorectal SurGeon

Community Lecture
March 23
Colorectal Cancer: Prevention, Screening and Treatment Options
More than 145,000 Americans will be diagnosed with colon cancer this year. That’s 1 out of 19 people in the United States. However, colon cancer is one of the most preventable forms of cancer. The Digestive Disease Institute at Cleveland Clinic Florida is world-renowned in achieving excellent outcomes for colorectal cancer patients. Come join Cleveland Clinic specialists as they discuss colorectal cancer prevention, screening and treatment options. Speakers: David Maron, MD Colorectal Surgeon Allison Schneider, MD Gastroenterologist Lecture will be held from 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm

Location: Cleveland Clinic Florida Jagelman Conference Center, Rooms 1 & 2 2950 Cleveland Clinic Blvd., Weston, FL 33331 Refreshments will be served.

reventing colon cancer may be easier than you think. Most cases of colon cancer can be prevented by having a screening colonoscopy. Colon cancer is one of few diseases where normal body tissue – in this case, polyps – actually turns deadly. Removing nonmalignant polyps during a colonoscopy procedure prevents colon cancer from developing. Colon cancer is one of the most prevalent cancers in the US. It is also an equal opportunity destroyer, oblivious to gender, race or income. People at increased risk for colon cancer include those with one or more immediate relatives with the disease, an inherited tendency to form polyps, a long history of ulcerative colitis, or a history of breast or uterine cancer. However, they are in the minority. The disease occurs most often in those who least expect it. According to Steven Wexner, MD, chief academic officer and chair of Colorectal Surgery at Cleveland Clinic Florida, “Colonoscopy is considered the gold standard test for detecting and eliminating polyps. Other tests are simply less effective.” ▸ Sigmoidoscopy: Only checks the lower portion of the colon. ▸ Hemoccult test: Detects blood in the stool, but is often inaccurate, giving false negative reports to as many as 50% of patients with colon cancer and false positive reports to many patients who do not have the disease. A positive barium enema requires a colonoscopy follow up. ▸ Virtual colonoscopy: Might be a substitute some day, but is now unaffordable. For this reason, it is now recommended by every major gastrointestinal society that both men and women have a screening colonoscopy at age 50. Anyone at increased risk should be screened by age 40 – earlier in some cases. The need for future screening tests is determined by the findings at the first screening as well as the patient’s risk factors. Some symptoms of colon cancer include blood in the stool and pain the lower abdomen. More than half of all people diagnosed with colon cancer have no symptoms at all, so it is simply not wise to wait for the appearance of symptoms. Do yourself a favor and schedule a colonoscopy today. It just might save your life. Cleveland Clinic Florida’s Digestive Disease team is comprised of colorectal surgeons, gastroenterologists, general surgeons and other specialists. They work collaboratively, in order to provide the most accurate diagnosis and individualized treatment plans for conditions such as colon cancer, irritable bowel syndrome, Crohn’s and Colitis, liver and pancreatic cancers, as well as many others. This team effort allows for the best outcome in patient care. For a consultation, call 1-800-639-DOCTOR, or visit www.clevelandclinicflorida.org. www.ourcityweston.com

A higher rate of survival and fewer complications in heart care.
Why choose “much like Cleveland Clinic” when you can choose Cleveland Clinic?

Some area hospitals have advanced technology and robust research programs. And, much like Cleveland Clinic, some have even adopted a team approach to surgery. But we know it’s not just about having resources, it’s what you do with them. Independent studies* show that patients at Cleveland Clinic Florida have a higher rate of survival and a lower risk of complications in heart surgery than at other hospitals in the region. That’s the critical difference between “much like” Cleveland Clinic and Cleveland Clinic. It’s why we are the best choice for you and the people you love.

Experience to raise much-needed money to purchase textbooks and computers. This unique program combines a fun fitness event, an interactive character education program and a highly profitable school fundraiser. In the days leading up to the fun run, team members from Boosterthon visited classrooms teaching students what it means to be a leader. Using the “Leader Launch” acronym, students learned that leaders are Learners, Active, Uplifting, Not bullies, Courageous and Helpers. At the same time, students were busy obtaining pledges based on how many laps they could run. “To make it more fun, the school set goals on how many states and countries could assist with the pledges,” said Annemarie Kelleher, activities director at Imagine Charter School at Weston. “Imagine at Weston is happy to report that our state challenge brought pledges in from over 42 states and, even more exciting is that, students connected with friends and relatives in over 38 countries. This, in itself, was a fabulous geography lesson.” For the students, the actual run was the best part of this program. According to students in Mrs. Najera’s fifth grade class, “We enjoyed that we got to run and have fun instead of just getting our parents to do the fundraising.” The event was a huge success. at Weston tripled the amount of money raised from any other fundraiser in the past. This was the first time the school participated in the Boosterthon program, but it will definitely not be the last.

If It Ain’t Broke...Make Certain!
By dr. Browner & dr. Behar

f it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!” We are all familiar with this statement. Perhaps you have even used it a few times yourself! However, these can be dangerous words if referring to one’s health. People who believe this about their health may be heading down a slippery slope to serious health problems. The “if it ain’t broke...” belief is founded on the notion that since pain usually means there is a problem, no pain must mean there’s no problem. Those that hold this view make decisions about their health based entirely on how they feel. Tragically, health care is littered with catastrophic examples demonstrating the naiveté of this belief. Heart disease and cancer are two extreme examples on a long list of conditions that can develop silently, with no symptoms. Back pain is one such condition. Remember the time you bent over and suddenly couldn’t move because of pain? That back problem didn’t just happen. Ninety percent of back and neck pain is a direct result of failure in management of spinal health. In other words, spinal pain is not the start of a problem, it is the end result.

I

A spine can be dysfunctional (not working correctly) for months or years before any pain is felt, thanks to the body’s many compensating mechanisms. However, when the body runs out of ways to compensate, or the compensating mechanisms finally give up, the white flag goes up in the form of pain signals. Science is now telling us there is more to silent spinal dysfunction problems than even most health practitioners are aware. Spinal dysfunction is usually the result of postural distortion (imbalance), and abnormal spinal alignment and curvature. Those structural problems, together with the abnormal function they produce, have been shown to cause premature deterioration of the spine, as well as adverse effects on the nervous system. Indeed, the long-term health consequences of structural and functional problems of the spine can be profound, yet often unnecessary. Do not let pain be your guide. Instead, be proactive with regards to your spinal health. Book a chiropractic spinal check-up today! For a consultation or more information you can reach Dr. Browner and Dr. Behar at Windmill Health Center in Weston at (954) 217-4881. What Your Doctor Is Not Telling You
By dr. Jean-claude nerette, d.o.

t is estimated that over 25% of the US population suffers from metabolic syndrome. Metabolic syndrome is a health problem that may include too much fat around the waist, elevated blood pressure, high cholesterol levels and elevated blood sugars. The risk of premature death from a heart attack is 7 times more likely for people with metabolic syndrome than without. This statistic is startling as these people appear otherwise “healthy.” Aside from exercise and eating right, it is imperative for both men and women to check hormones levels. Has your doctor checked your testosterone levels? Higher testosterone levels have been shown to independently lower the risk of metabolic syndrome. How can you afford to be without adequate hormones?

Stop Suffering – Start Living – We Can Help! Sottopelle Therapy is Hassel Free!
Are you feeling not quite yourself, tired and with a general sense of un-wellness even though you may look and act relatively normal? Is your fatigue not relieved by sleep? You may be suffering from adrenal fatigue. Even the healthiest person may experience adrenal fatigue at one time or another in their life due to the stressors of an illness, life crises, or a continuing difficult situation. The problem is continued adrenal fatigue can wreak havoc with your life. As adrenal fatigue continues, it is common to have some of the following symptoms: inability to lose weight, tendency to get sick often, lack of energy, unclear thinking, unexplained hair loss, allergies, reduced sex drive and much more. Your body does its best to make up for under-functioning adrenals glands, but what price are you willing to pay? Many alterations take place at the biochemical and cellular levels in response to compensate for the decrease in adrenal hormones associated with adrenal fatigue. Have you had your adrenal function checked? The good news is that the conditions listed above can be identified with proper testing and treated with natural pharmaceuticals and supplements thus proactively promoting a wellness state and balance. To find out how you can be proactive and not reactive about your health, contact Dr. Nerette, who practices Wellness Medicine and specializes in treating all types of hormones in the body to prevent disease and promote your highest state of well-being. Dr. Jean-Claude Nerette is board certified in Internal Medicine and SottoPelle BioIdentical Hormone Treatment. an you imagine the joy of waking up in the morning and being able to see without the aid of glasses or daily wear contacts? Ortho-k, the reshaping of one’s cornea with contact lenses to improve vision isn’t new. It has been practiced by some eye doctors for decades. It wasn’t until recently, with technological advancements in the procedure, that it was possible to achieve reduction of nearsightedness in a matter of hours. Not only is this technique beneficial for those with nearsightedness, but also those who suffer from farsightedness and astigmatism. Ortho-k is effective for both children and adults. Surgery is not an option for children or for those whose vision is changing, nor does it slow the progression of nearsightedness, this method does just that. Ortho-k is achieved in a unique way. While you sleep, these therapeutic lenses gently change the front curvature of your eye or cornea. One very pleased patient wrote: “What a great way to improve vision without surgery. I wore my lenses for a week and what a difference it has made in my natural vision and correcting my nearsightedness. I can go all day without the help of glasses or contact lenses.” During the procedure, the eye is flattened and retains the flattened contour for a period of time. This process is referred to as corneal molding. The mold is a specially designed contact lens. The lens is somewhat larger than a standard lens, but not very different in appearance, and comfort is generally excellent. Ortho-k is not only an excellent alternative to the wearing of spectacles, but it also frees the individual from the distractions caused by perspiration, dust, wind, weather and temperature. When a patient undergoes Lasik, the procedure requires that a flap is cut in the cornea. Regardless of the method used to cut the flap, the process severs the nerves that regulate tear flow. This often leads to dry eye syndrome that can be discomforting. Unlike Lasik surgery, Ortho-k is completely reversible, so if you decide at a later point that you want to undergo surgery, you can do just that. Why not free yourself from your glasses and contacts the affordable way?

For a consultation or more information on Ortho-k, you can reach Dr. Jane Therrien at Weston Family Eyecare, 4472 Weston Road, or (954) 888-9393. Dr. Jane Therrien and her staff look forward to exceeding your expectations.

To Forgive or Not To Forgive

orgiveness is a gift we give ourselves. For no matter how grave the offense, carrying and living with the anger, rage and resentment of this emotional baggage can be paralyzing. You may ruminate on the hurt, plan the retaliation, or cut the offender out of your life. What you may not understand is that forgiveness is a process. It takes time and effort. It is neither meant to minimize the pain of the hurt that was caused, nor to let the other person off the hook for inappropriate or disrespectful behavior. Forgiveness releases you. When you hold resentment toward another, you are bound to that person by a very powerful emotional link. Forgiveness is the only way to dissolve that bond. It releases you to live, love and accept love in return. Forgiveness is not forgetting. In true forgiveness, you release your hatred, self-protection and desire for vengeance while keeping memories. Forgiveness is not necessarily reconciliation. Although forgiveness does not depend on reconciliation, the degree to which reconciliation can occur does depend on the forgiveness. Reconciliation is possible only when the forgiver and the person being forgiven can come to an understanding regarding the offense. Forgiveness is not revictimization. Many people avoid forgiveness because they fear they may become the victim of the person who has wronged them, again. In the process of forgiveness, we may realize the need for boundaries. We may become aware of decisions we need to make about our relationship to the wrongdoer in order to create a more balanced healthy relationship.

what Forgiveness is

Forgiveness is a process. You can begin the process of forgiveness today, but that does not mean you will instantly feel the freedom of complete forgiveness. For deep offenses, it may take years to experience the full freedom of forgiveness. Committing to the process means admitting that you are powerless to forgive on your own and that you may have to use meditation, spiritual growth, and sometimes even psychotherapeutic assistance with your efforts. Forgiveness is a decision. The most important contribution you make to the process of forgiveness is to trust enough to make the decision to forgive. The extraordinary courage it often takes to forgive the person who hurt you will heal you. No one can force anyone to forgive, and no one can keep anyone from forgiving. Forgiveness helps create positive outcomes. True forgiveness brings about a seemingly magical transformation. Whereas we were once burdened, consumed and obsessed, now we’re transformed, free and willing.

1. Fully examine the wrong. Often it is helpful to express the anger in your soul in a letter that you don’t send to the person who offended you. This helps to fully recognize the reality of whom and what you are asking yourself to forgive. 2. Confess your own sins. It’s important for you to honestly examine yourself and take responsibility for your part of the issue in the process of forgiveness. 3. Commit to the process of forgiveness. Understand it will take time, energy and persistence. If you find that you are struggling with the practice of true forgiveness, contact Alina Gastesi-de Armas, Licensed Mental Health Counselor, at A Place for Growth, (954) 257-6393 or visit www.APlaceforGrowth.com. She can assist you in working through your own barriers to forgiveness as well as end the cycle of damaging relationships.

The New Glamour
By helen charleS

T

he season for sparkle is behind us, although a brilliant haircut accompanied by smooth and radiant skin is the starting point for glamour at any time. One of my much cherished clients asked me a very interesting question the other day. She said, “How can one look glamorous without spending hours in front of the mirror?” My answer was simple. Groomed hair and well maintained skin will always help to look fresh and glamorous without much effort. In this month’s column I have enlisted the help of Aesthetician Charlotte Mahan to answer some common hair care and skin care questions about how to achieve glamour with ease.

▸ To stop hair loss. ▸ To keep hair in tip top condition, as this will add ease with which hair will be styled. ▸ To update your style and avoid falling into dated, unstylish, high maintenance looks.

what are the benefits of having regular hair cuts?

what is best regime and product for dry, brittle, lifeless hair?

A few reasons to treat yourself to monthly facials are: ▸ To cleanse, tone and hydrate, but also to relax the mind and body. ▸ Because the skin renews itself every 28 days, a deep exfoliation is needed to keep the skin in tiptop condition. ▸ To update skincare products periodically. ▸ To make aware of any changes in the skin, whether it be seasonal or a new mole that might need dermatological attention.

what are the benefits of having regular facials?

Professionally advised products are the best for your hair. Best regime is to cleanse, treat and protect your hair with the suitable products at all times. Six weekly in-salon conditioning treatments will always ensure the condition improves. Hair should also be trimmed every six weeks. Besides the obvious hat and umbrella, physical sunscreens such as Skinceuticals light weight Ultimate

appearance on the outside. Besides lots of fresh fruits and vegetables, we recommend products such as CE Ferulic and Phloretin CF by Skinceuticals.

what is the best regime for aging skin?

One should consider their monthly facial as 25% of their skin care regime. The other 75% should be consistent, athome care. That at-home care should consist of a cleanse and tone for the morning and evening, a preventative product in the morning such as Skinceuticals Eye Gel to defend the skin against further damage, a corrective product in the evening, daily and nightly hydration, and most importantly, a physical sunscreen.

All acne is caused by congested pores either due to a change in hormones, unsuitable skin care products or make up, improper cleansing, or lack of exfoliation. Other factors that may contribute are genetics, a poor diet or a stressful lifestyle.

what are the causes of acne in both adults and teens?

what causes dry scalp and dandruff?

Dry scalp is usually due to the use of incorrect products and lack of adequate rinsing after shampooing. Epsom salts can be used to gently cleanse the scalp before shampooing to eliminate flakes. However, dandruff is a more serious complaint and can be infectious and contagious and should be treated by special shampoos which do not strip the natural oils from the scalp.

UV Sun Defense SPF 30 are recommended to protect against UVA and UVB rays. Additionally, antioxidants can strengthen the skin from the inside out and make it less vulnerable to sun damage. Hair will also benefit from products such as Kerastase Solair range, with protection against UVA rays.

Antioxidants are vitamins and nutrients found in our foods and skin care products that can either prevent or slow down the oxidative damage caused by free radicals. Free radicals are part of our natural metabolism but also occur due to environmental factors, such as smoke, pollution and pesticides. Daily use of products that contain a high percentage of antioxidants is very important to obtain or preserve a strengthened support structure on the inside and a more youthful, firm and radiant

what are antioxidants and the benefits of using them on a regular basis?

There’s Still Time To Trim Your 2010 Tax Bill

E

By Joel friend

ven though 2010 is history, you may still be able to trim your 2010 tax bill. Be sure you don’t overlook the following actions and deductions that could save you money.

▸ Maximize your 2010 IRA contribution. You have until April 18, 2011, to make deductible 2010 contributions. The maximum 2010 contribution is $5,000 ($6,000 if you were 50 or older last year). ▸ If you changed jobs in 2010, make sure you didn’t have excess social security taxes withheld. Claim credit for the excess on your Form 1040 if you paid over $6,622. ▸ Look into itemizing deductions if you usually take the standard deduction. Search for allowable deductions that you might have overlooked, such as the restored 2010 deduction for state and local sales taxes in lieu of deducting state and local income taxes. ▸ Medical deductions are allowable to the extent they exceed 7.5% of adjusted gross income (AGI). Don’t forget items such as eyeglasses and hearing aids. You can deduct mileage for 2010 medical appointments at 16.5¢ a mile, plus parking and toll fees. ▸ Don’t overlook tax preparation fees, safe deposit costs, and certain investment advice. They all qualify as miscellaneous deductions, subject to a 2% of AGI limit. ▸ Up to $2,500 of student loan interest is deductible whether you itemize or not. ▸ The deduction of up to $4,000 for qualified tuition and school expenses is available for 2010. Qualifying amounts for you, your spouse, and dependents may be deductible. Income limits apply. ▸ If you’re a teacher or teacher’s aide, you can deduct up to $250 for classroom supplies that you purchased with your own money. ▸ If you made energy-saving improvements to your home, check into the credit of up to 30% of your cost, subject to a $1,500 limit for the amounts spent in 2009 and 2010. Joel Friend and Associates is a multi-lingual, multi-disciplinary tax and accounting practice located in the heart of Weston. positive parenting
Choosing the Right Summer Experience
By Jodi Kurry cohen, mS.ed, temple dor dorim early childhood director

elting ice pops dripping down arms, the stickiness rinsed with a run through the sprinklers. Color War, Capture the Flag, potato sack races…shaving cream, cheers and chants, watermelon poolside…crafts, flashlights, card games and gooey S’mores. As parents reminisce, these are the memories they share… these are the memories of summer. With summer almost here, it’s time to sort through choices and make plans for the family. First and foremost on parent’s minds is what will their child do for the summer? Travel camp, Day camp, sleep away or Sports camp? Maybe the choice is between a specialty camp like Drama or Baseball or maybe it’s a trip up North to stay with the grandparents. With so many choices, how does a parent decide? So many times we base our decisions on what our own memories are and this is how we decide for our children. If you loved camp, you might decide that your child will also, and so you choose a camp based on that experience. If you have memories, though, of not liking a particular camp experience you might assume the same for your child and avoid those types of camps all together. Although it’s understandable that our own experiences from childhood influence our bias, it’s not necessarily in the best interest of our children. Whether the experience was good or not for mom or dad doesn’t necessarily mean it will be the right fit for their child. The first thing a parent needs to ask themselves is what type of camp meets their individual child’s needs. Sit down and list their interests. Does your child love art? Love to play sports? Do they thrive on constant action from one activity to the next or

M

are they more comfortable moving at a more leisurely pace? Are they outdoors often and enjoy it or are they continually asking to go back inside? This should help narrow down the big list of choices. After deciding what type of camp, the next criteria for choosing a camp should be what you want your child to get out of their camp experience. Aside from enjoying it, are there specific skills you hope they’ll develop over the summer? Whether it’s improving at a sport, making friends or becoming more independent, is the camp you’re choosing conducive to this being accomplished? Last but not least, the camp has to meet your needs as a parent in regard to comfort level when it comes to safety, supervision, location and, of course, financial commitment. Once you have narrowed down the list to camps you are comfortable with, you can then allow your child to choose from those options. We all want our children to walk away with those cherished summer memories of our pasts. While it’s important to pick experiences for our children that will last a lifetime, ones we know they’ll remember forever, we need to keep in mind that those memories may be a little different than our own… and that’s ok. Exciting Views!
was flooded by mail asking what to do with small windows. My advice is always to think big. Just because the opening is small, short or narrow doesn’t mean we have to dress it that way. Think of how we style our clothing to make ourselves seem taller; we use stripes. To add some body, we wear horizontal stripes. To create an elongated torso, we wear our belts below the waist. To translate this into your drapery, place your tiebacks lower to make the panel seem longer. Height: To create height, go higher than your window. Normal is 3” above. Once you have soffit space above, use it. Go ceiling height if you have 9 ft. ceilings. Width: To make your window look wider than it is, extend your rods as much as you can to the sides. If your view is important to you, make sure blinds and drape panels stack off to the sides onto the wall. If not, the fabric hangs in the window and conceals your view. This is called “stack back” and is definitely something you want to discuss with your drapery designer. Add Layers: The pictures use a contrast band for interest, as in the green and copper drapery, or a Roman shade in a natural material or in a neutral fabric. By adding layers, you are doing two things: ▸ You are increasing the functionality of your window because you can raise and lower the shade to control your privacy. ▸ You are adding dimension to you window. It is the same concept as when we dress with a jacket and inner piece. Like an inner piece for your jacket, you can contrast it for interest or coordinate the colors for an integrated look. I invite you to visit our 4,000 sq foot showroom. We feature the endless possibilities to dress up small windows and give them spunk. Reupholster or Replace?
By myriam payne, interiorS By decoratinG den

or every reason to reupholster a piece of furniture there is often an equally good reason to replace it. My clients frequently ask me to reupholster sofas and chairs in the belief that they will be saving money. The labor cost to refurbish upholstered furniture is more than most people expect because they don’t realize that the piece has to be “un-made” before it can be “re-made.” There are nearly always necessary repairs to be made to the frame, springs to be re-tied, and seat and back cushion insert to be replaced. Also, the quantity of fabric required, especially if patterned, may be far more than expected. In addition, many fabrics need to be backed before they can be applied to the frame. Although it is rarely true that reupholstering furniture is the most economical choice there may be some other very good reasons to recover a piece. One needs to consider the characteristics of the sofa itself. Is the dimension and design perfect for your room and your family? Is the sofa an unusual shape or size that may be difficult to replace? Do you know that the sofa is a quality piece that has high quality features like eight-way hand tied springs, kiln dried wood frame, or corner blocking? Is there a sentimental attachment to the furniture in question? These are all valid reasons to reupholster your furniture. On the other hand, if the piece of furniture fails to qualify with any of the considerations listed above, it may be more cost effective to replace it. If the sofa is an outdated style, or was inexpensively made and is not extremely comfortable or attractive investing more in it will not change any of those characteristics. And no amount of fabric, trim, or throw pillows will correct a proportion problem if the piece of furniture is too

Bringing Relatives from Abroad: Consular Processing
By elizaBeth r. Blandon

Please view our website for our new educational video.

.S. citizens and legal permanent residents can petition their relatives to live and work in this country. If the relatives live abroad, the procedure is known as consular processing. It begins only after Citizenship and Immigration Service (CIS) approves the petition. Most importantly, a visa number must be available. They become available when the priority date is current on the Visa Bulletin of the State Department. Different categories of relatives are given different priorities. The spouse or child of a legal permanent resident (LPR) is allowed to immigrate much sooner than the adult son or daughter of that LPR. Thus, the priority date of an LPR’s spouse will become current much sooner than the priority date of an LPR’s adult daughter. Consular processing begins when CIS forwards the approved petition to the National Visa Center (NVC). When the visa number becomes available, the NVC sends a packet of information to the relative abroad, using the address listed on the petition. After the relative completes and returns the paperwork, the NVC processes the packet. Next, the NVC notifies the State Department. An immigrant visa processing appointment will be scheduled for the relative and all qualifying family members at the nearest consulate that issues immigrant visas. At the end of the process, the consulate grants an immigrant visa. The relatives enter the United States with that visa (as opposed to a tourist visa, for example). The day of entry is the date they become legal permanent residents. Green cards and Social Security cards arrive by mail afterwards. From the time the priority date is current, the process takes from six to 12 months if documents and information are provided immediately. If the relative is in the United States, the process is completely different. That is known as adjustment of status, which allows work authorization. For more information on either consular processing or adjustment of status, contact the Weston office of Elizabeth R. Blandon at (954) 385-0157. The Florida Bar certified Ms. Blandon as one of the few immigration experts in the state. More information on her credentials is available at www.Blandon-Law.com.

art of the fear of divorce, besides the obvious emotional trauma that it often brings, is not really understanding the process. The problem is that many individuals have what they believe to be an understanding of what lies ahead, but they are often mistaken. Everybody seems to know somebody who has a “horror’ story of what happened to a friend or family member as a result of a divorce. Here are some misconceptions that I hope can be cleared up.

▸ “I am going to loose everything because the courts favor women.” The reality is that, except for very limited circumstances, all assets and liabilities are divided equally. I have never experienced a circumstance where one party received 100% of the assets. ▸ “If I earned the money, its mine.”Any funds earned during the marriage by either party are joint marital property. As I often explain to clients, for every dollar earned, each spouse gets fifty cents. ▸ “My retirement is my sole property.” Once again, if the funds in the retirement account were invested during the marriage they are considered joint marital property and will be equally divided. ▸ “I want sole custody of the children.” Florida no longer issues a custody designation. Neither parent will be “given custody,” since that term no longer exists in the statutes. Each parent is considered to be equal and as such decisions concerning the children should be jointly made. ▸ “I am seeking a legal separation.” Florida does not recognize legal separations. Since this is a “no fault” state, the parties do not have to be separated either before or even during the divorce. ▸ “I am not seeking child support.” Parents cannot waive a child support obligation, since the support does not actually belong to the parents. This is the one area where the parties cannot waive the requirements of the law. ▸ “Only women can seek alimony.” Florida’s alimony statute does not preclude the payment of alimony to Husband’s. Alimony is based upon a number of factors, including length of marriage and the respective income of both parties. ▸ “I have the children most often, so therefore the children and I can relocate to another state.” Florida has a very strict relocation statute. It requires either consent from the other parent or a court order. The requirements are based upon a number of factors, which all relate to the best interests of the children. These are just a few of the misconceptions I seem to address on a fairly regular basis. I know that there are many others. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact my office and hopefully we can clear them up for you. For information, visit www.divorcebroward.com or call 954-385-9160.

When Is the Right Time for Homeowners to File for Bankruptcy Protection?

M

By omar J. arcia, eSq., forecloSure defenSe and BanKruptcy protection attorney

any homeowners are under the false impression that they should file for bankruptcy protection the moment they fall behind on their mortgage payments. However, every consumer must be aware that bankruptcy should only be filed as a last resort, when absolutely necessary, and when all else fails. Based upon our experience in handling hundreds of consumer collection matters, foreclosures and bankruptcy cases, there are really just a few instances when a client must file for bankruptcy protection. One such situation is after a final foreclosure judgment has been entered and the homeowner is only days away from a public auction of the home. Filing for bankruptcy protection at this time will automatically cancel the foreclosure sale, and will provide the homeowner with some valuable time to complete a loan modification application or prívate short sale of the home prior to a public auction. Filing for bankruptcy protection at the outset of a foreclosure proceeding is highly unadvisable, especially in view of the fact that in 2010 the average time to complete a foreclosure in Broward County was 600 days.

Several other instances when a bankruptcy filing is appropriate are when a debtor is facing a garnishment of wages, seizure of his/her bank accounts, or when a creditor is attempting to repossess property or a vehicle after a final judgment. Under these limited circumstances, filing for bankruptcy makes absolute sense given that there is no time and possibly no legal grounds to attack the collection process in court. However, if a bankruptcy discharge is obtained too early, a consumer will not be able to file for bankruptcy protection again for another 8 years. The preferred type of bankruptcy is a Chapter 7, assuming that your monthly expenses exceed your income. If you qualify for a Chapter 7, all credit card debt, unpaid medical expenses, and all other unsecured debt is wiped out completely. Unfortunately, any debt owed to the federal government for student loans or IRS debt will not be wiped out in a bankruptcy. You also may not qualify for a Chapter 7 bankruptcy if you have other assets which you could sell to cover your debts. In that case, you may have to file under Chapter 13, to restructure your debt, and slowly pay all past due amounts over a period of 3 to 5 years. The bankruptcy code is not easy to navigate. If the bankruptcy petition is not presented correctly, not only will you not qualify for bankruptcy protection, but you may also be prevented from re-filing for 180 days or more. The Arcia Law Firm has assisted hundreds of local homeowners and consumers in bankruptcy and foreclosure defense matters. If uncertain whether you qualify for bankruptcy protection or whether it is the right time to file bankruptcy, please contact the Arcia Law Firm today at 1-800-770-7102 or visit us online at www.arcialawfirm.com. Likewise, if you know anyone that is facing a mortgage related crisis, or is considering filing bankruptcy, please forward this article to them immediately.

Is Breast Augmentation right for you?

ast year almost 400,000 breast augmentation procedures were performed in the country, making it one of the most requested procedures in cosmetic plastic surgery. Why is the decision to have breast surgery so critical for women? I believe that although there are multiple other cosmetic procedures that women do to improve their appearance and looks, breast surgery is the only one that combines their outward appearance and is intimately connected to how they feel about their femininity. Women may choose to undergo breast enlargement surgery for various reasons. These personal reasons may center around breasts that are perceived to be underdeveloped, or because of differences in the sizes of the breasts, or from changes after pregnancy or breast feeding. Some women may be happy with their breasts but just want them made fuller. Often after weight loss, aging or childbirth, a woman’s breast volume and shape may change. Breast enhancement using breast implants can give a woman more proportional shape and may improve self-esteem. Magazine covers, airbrushed photos of celebrities and computer-generated images often give women an unrealistic view of how they will look after breast implant surgery. That is why it is so important for you and your plastic surgeon to make decisions together based on what is possible for you and your individual goals and desires. tee to green
Wow! How Did He Pull Off That Shot?

By dean SKlar, pGa profeSSional

ne of the greatest pressure shots of all time has to be from the 1982 US Open at Pebble Beach. When Tom Watson was heading into the tournament he practiced his short game a lot because he knew that he probably would have to rely on that part of his game more than any other. The greens at Pebble Beach are the roller coaster type, so if you miss a green then you have downhill recovery shots from heavy US Open length rough of bunkers.   He worked on chipping the ball off a down slope in deep grass, trying to loft it and land it softly. One thing people don’t realize about this kind of shot is that if you weaken your grip, it’s easier to keep the club face open. Set your left thumb straight down the grip, and weaken your right hand as well. Keep in mind that because you’re using a high lofted club, you have to swing harder. Watson birdied the last hole to beat Jack Nicklaus by two shots, but his chip in at 17 gave him the cushion to know that a par would win. As a student at Stanford, he went down to Pebble Beach probably a dozen times, and he always played a little game with himself that he had to par to win the US Open.   This is the kind of practice and imagination that produces great results when applied. I am sure everyone has thought of the feeling and sensation to win the US Open while practicing either a shot to the green or a two foot putt on the practice green.   Next time you go out to practice, try and talk to yourself and imagine the thought of holing out that putt or to par 3 last hole to win a US Open and see what kind of result you get! If you would like to talk to PGA Professional Dean Sklar about your golf game, contact him at [email protected] or at the Rose and Dean Sklar Real Estate Group at Coldwell Banker, 1760 Bell Tower Lane in Weston, (954) 389-6197 or on Dean’s cell at (954) 298-3616. recent survey indicated that 40% of America’s pet population is overweight. If you or your veterinarian feel that your pet would benefit from a reduction in body weight, this discussion should help you to understand how to help overweight dogs lose weight. Weight loss for obese cats is more complicated and should not be done without a veterinarian’s supervision. Very simply put, if your pet is overweight it is taking in (eating) more calories than it needs. Set all excuses aside -- excessive weight in an otherwise healthy pet is a direct result of consuming unnecessary amounts of food. If your pet is overweight it should be examined for heart, thyroid or other metabolic disorders. A detailed history should be taken with emphasis on frequency of exercise, amount and type of food being provided, and other parameters relative to calorie requirements.

The pet food industry has painted the picture for us of the “eager eater.” The impression is that a happy, healthy pet will eat every meal with gusto. Please do not try to entice your pet to eat if it isn’t interested. If you provide a good quality food and a liberal amount of water, your pet will eat when it wants and do better than having to eat when you want. Another common myth maintains that spaying or neutering causes obesity. This is absolutely false. Any pet, neutered or not, will gain weight if it is overfed relative to its energy requirements. This may slightly slow the pet’s metabolism, as will normal aging, and it will then burn calories off more slowly; therefore it may require less food. Keep in mind the surgery doesn’t cause the weight gain, eating too much does and you have control over that. The right nutrition will encourage weight loss while helping your pet feel full. Work with your veterinarian to choose the proper food. Animal Health Center @ Weston is “The Gentle Practice You Can Rely On.” Dr. Miguel E. Cordova and his staff are committed to caring for your precious pets. The practice is located at 2701 Executive Park Drive, Suite 1. Pilates at Weston Town Center Welcomes All Ages and Abilities
ize does matter – at least in terms of Pilates studios. Pilates at Weston Town Center is a brand new, boutique studio designed to give each client individualized attention as they perform each precise Pilates exercise on the state-of-the-art equipment. “In Pilates, the emphasis is on proper form and body alignment,” states Tsipi Kop, owner of Pilates at Weston Town Center and certified STOTT PILATES® instructor. “Our concept was to create a small studio, with a maximum of four students per class, so that each client can be given the personal attention and care they deserve.” Small classes are far safer for clients because each movement can be monitored and corrected by one of the certified STOTT PILATES® instructors. “The smallest correction can make a huge difference in the engagement of proper muscles, giving you better and quicker results,” explains Tsipi. There is no mistaking the results of Pilates. Just look at celebrities such as Madonna, Gwyneth Paltrow, Jennifer Anniston, and NBA star Jason Kidd. All attribute their lean and muscular bodies to Pilates. Despite its new-found popularity, Pilates is not a new fitness trend. It has actually been around for generations. It was created by Joseph Pilates in the 1920’s. With a background in fitness, yoga and Zen meditation, he devised a unique sequence of movements that moved the mind and muscle in harmony. He fine-tuned his wellness regime during World War I while working as an orderly in an infirmary. That’s where he engineered a way to rig the springs on hospital beds to offer light resistance exercises to bedridden patients, and thus the seed for Pilates equipment was planted. Because it was originally created for bedridden patients, Pilates is one of the safest forms of exercise. It is recommended by physicians, orthopedics, physical therapists, and chiropractors. Using a precise system of gentle, controlled exercises, Pilates works several muscle groups simultaneously through smooth, continuous motion, with a particular concentration on strengthening and stabilizing the core (abdomen, back and pelvic region). The result is long, toned muscles, increased core strength and body stability. According to Tsipi, “After just a few sessions, clients will develop improved posture, toned and firmer muscles, reduced muscle and joint pain, improved balance, future injury prevention, increased strength and flexibility, improved athletic performance, and higher energy levels.” Because every exercise can be modified and customized for individual needs, Pilates is the ideal workout for all ages and abilities. It is often recommended for seniors because it is a low-impact, safe form of strength training. Not to mention, it can improve balance, increase flexibility, improve posture, and often help to reduce back and joint pain. Pilates at Weston Town Center offers a special program just for seniors. Gail Friedman, age 63, is a Pilates proponent. “I never did anything in my entire life,” she states. “I did no exercise at all before I decided to give Pilates a try. I love it!” Friedman says Pilates leaves her feeling refreshed and exhilarated,

S

not exhausted. “I started with twice a week, but I feel so good and I’m seeing such great results I’ve added a third day.” Teens are also seeing great results from Pilates. “Give your child a healthier future by enrolling them in one of our Teen Pilates sessions,” suggests Tsipi, noting that Pilates can be especially beneficial to young athletes. “There’s a reason so many professional athletes study Pilates. It can help improve performance, prevent injuries, and help rehabilitation after sports injuries.” There is no need to worry about your child’s safety. Pilates uses spring resistance, not heavy gymtype weights, so it is perfectly safe for adolescents’ growing bodies. Pilates at Weston Town Center also offers Prenatal and Postnatal Pilates classes. “Pilates is a low-impact method of exercise, making it very safe for pregnant women. It helps to strengthen the core, particularly the muscles needed for a healthy pregnancy such as the back, abdominal and pelvic floor muscles,” explains Tsipi. After the baby is born, Pilates can help women regain their pre-baby body. “Not only can you get back the body you had before, but you can improve it!” boasts Tsipi. “Pilates strengthens and tones all of the abdominal muscles. It is one of the best methods of exercise for flattening and toning the abdominals and core.” Pilates may deliver tight, toned bodies, but that doesn’t mean you need one before you begin. “That’s the beauty of Pilates. You can jump in at any time. We’re watching you closely, so there is no worry about injury,” explains Tsipi. Plus, with Pilates at Weston Town Center’s small group classes with a maximum of four students per class, as well as personal training and semi-private sessions for two, you will never be intimidated. It doesn’t matter what you look like or how fit you are – each unique Pilates workout program is tailored to your personal goals, needs and body. Pilates at Weston Town Center specializes in Pilates Reformer classes. The studio is equipped with high-end STOTT PILATES® equipment such as the stateof-the-art V2Max Plus Reformers with mat converters and towers, as well as spine supporters, fitness circles, flex bands, foam rollers, Bosu balance trainers, toning and stability balls, and much more. If you have never tried Pilates, Pilates at Weston Town Center is offering a free, introductory private session. Call (954) 504-3998 now to schedule your complimentary class. Pilates at Weston Town Center is located at 1660 Market Street in the beautiful Weston Town Center shopping center. The studio entrance is inside Helen Charles Salon London. Pierini Esthetic Surgery Treats Mind, Body and Spirit
By Stacey BomSer

P

ierini Esthetic Surgery is not your typical medical aesthetic center. Here, services are focused on the mind, body and spirit. “We integrate the most innovative surgical techniques and the best holistic therapies to achieve true integral beauty,” explains President of Pierini Esthetic Surgery Alberto Pierini, who has more than 30 years of experience in the fields of plastic and reconstructive surgery. He certainly knows how to achieve true beauty, as he has worked with some of the most beautiful women in the world. Pierini was the former official plastic surgeon of the Miss Venezuela organization. Some of his patients went on to be crowned Miss World and Miss Universe. This vast experience with Venezuelan procedures is what attracts so many clients from Weston to Pierini Esthetic Surgery. Others are drawn to the practice’s expertise in Colombian procedures and techniques. Medical Director Dr. Stephanie Stover, a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon, oversees the surgical team at Pierini Esthetic’s world class facility. All procedures are performed in the state-of-the-art, fully equipped surgical suite. The list of cosmetic surgical procedures ranges from nose jobs and face lifts to tummy tucks and breast augmentation, even the popular Brazilian Butt Lift. To complement these cosmetic surgery procedures, Pierini Esthetic Surgery also offers a selection of medical esthetic treatments. The med spa provides facials and other skin care treatments, as well as Botox and other injectables. The med spa also offers massage, reflexology and Reiki therapy. One of the main things that truly makes Pierini Esthetic Surgery special is its holistic treatments. “If you are coming here for a procedure, either surgical

Dr. Stephanie Stover, Alberto Pierini and Dr. Marina Vargas invite you to experience the advanced surgical techniques and revolutionary holistic therapies available at Pierini Esthetic Surgery.

or not, you are going to see a change in the way you look but also in the way you feel,” explains Pierini. “We understand this change is both physical and emotional. Using holistic therapies we prepare our patients for their transformation.” As Director of Holistic Treatments, Dr. Marina Vargas works with the patients. Not only does she prepare them for their procedure, but also for their recovery. According to Pierini, by working with Dr. Vargas, patients learn to embrace their new image and this positive energy greatly improves their recovery. Dr. Vargas also directs the weight loss programs, which include the revolutionary Virtual Gastric Band. This is a non-surgical, non-invasive weight loss procedure that has no dangerous side effects or torturous recovery. “It is not a new diet or food plan with restrictions,” explains Pierini. “Rather, it’s an innovative technique for weight control. It directly influences the root of the overweight or obesity problem, the desire to eat and bad eating habits.” Basically, the virtual gastric band is a psychological technique to reprogram eating habits. Using hypnotic therapy, the patient creates the feeling of having a mental gastric band allowing the stomach to feel reduced in size. As a result, the patient significantly decreases the amount of food they eat and Pierini Esthetic Surgery was designed to promote tranquility with calming colors and earthy elements, with a mix of modern décor. loses weight.

The beauty of this technique is that it works on both a physical and unconscious level. Patients listen to a series of audio recordings over a six week period which reprogram their eating habits. Over time, patients form new attitudes about food and replace bad behaviors with positive ones. “These techniques of hypnosis and the reprogramming of positive thoughts and ideas towards food helps with the permanent weight loss in order to obtain a healthy and beautiful physique and great quality of life,” states Pierini. Because this is not a diet, it is safe for all ages. Children as young as five years old can undergo virtual gastric band treatment, as long as they are accompanied by a parent. And because it essentially reprograms the patient’s thoughts and ideas about food and eating, the results will last a lifetime. it’s their business
Weston Town Center Welcomes J.G. McGuinness
n Ireland, the local pub is where the whole town comes together. It’s filled with laughter and chatter amongst friends old and new as they enjoy a pint or two, along with a delicious and hearty home-style meal. An Irish pub is truly a place to eat, drink and be merry…and that’s just what J.G. McGuinness brings to the Weston Town Center this month. J.G. McGuinness is an authentic Irish pub in every aspect of the word. “When you step in the door you will not know you are not in Dublin,” states Jessie Gay, proprietor of J.G. McGuinness. “Our focus is on providing a true authentic Irish experience.” Jessie and his partners certainly know what they’re doing. Two of the partners are actually from Ireland. Together, the partners have over 70 years of experience in the restaurant and alcohol business. Jessie has been in the industry for over 30 years, the last 21 with Guinness/ Diageo as Vice President of Sales. “That was one of my J.G. your co-workers, a hearty home-cooked style meal with your family, a drink with friends, catch a game, or simply listen to a late-night jam session, J.G. McGuinness is the place to be. And Jessie says he knew the Weston Town Center was where he wanted to be. “Since day one I knew I wanted to be in this location. Having lived in Weston not once, but twice, I know this is the heart and soul of the community.” Although this is his hometown, he did not jump into this decision lightly. “It took a solid year to come up with the right location. We studied the demographics of the entire tri-county area and decided that Weston was the right choice,” explains Jessie, noting that there are no other authentic Irish pubs anywhere in the area. With the opening of J.G. McGuinness he is hoping to bring patrons from all over Broward County to Weston and, specifically, to the Weston Town Center. “We want to make Weston Town Center a destination instead of driving to Las Olas or South Beach. We have it all in our own backyard.” J.G. McGuinness will open later this month, hopefully by St. Patrick’s Day. “We will not open our doors until we are completely ready,” says Jessie. “Our management team believes that you only have one chance to make a first impression and we want your first impression of J.G. McGuinness to be incredible.” Don’t worry; it won’t be long until you are cheering “Slainte” at J.G. McGuinness. “You may not always arrive with a smile on your face, but there’s a good chance you’ll leave with one.” Great People, Great Beer, Great Service with No Shortcuts! J.G. McGuinness is located at 1744 Main Street in the heart of the Weston Town Center across from the Bell Tower. It will serve lunch and dinner daily, from 11am until late. ask the expert
Joe, The Plumber
By dr. Brian udell

ne day, you look up and notice that there is a wet spot in your ceiling. Inch by inch the spot is getting larger and even starts to drip on to the floor. What is the next thing that most people would do? You would, I assume, call the plumber – right? Who would search the web for “drips in the ceiling,” try to understand all the possible causes of the wetness, open up the drywall and attempt to weld the hole in the pipe (or maybe it’s the joint, or something else altogether)? Yes, there is always someone who would attempt to perform this task, but it sounds pretty foolish to me. Plus, you could actually make things worse (think FLOOD). Yet, when many people have a complicated and sick child, they start searching the Internet for a diagnosis and even a cure, not a doctor! The web contains over 20 million pages of information about autism. Which page(s) should you believe? Which ones contain information that is incorrect and could make things worse for the child? That is what a pediatrician is for – to take an extensive history and perform a thorough physical examination, then give you as precise diagnosis as possible and work with the family to come up with a plan to get the best care. Then, you can read the Internet all that you want, talk to your pediatrician, explore other opinions and consider all of the

O

new information that you are trying to comprehend. Why doesn’t everyone take this approach? Why do so many people try to “fix the leak” themselves? Well, I’m afraid to say that the pediatric community should take a great deal of the responsibility here. That same pediatrician who claims that “all vaccinations are always safe” and “he’s a boy, so they speak later” has suffered a loss of confidence because of tunnel vision and an unsympathetic ear. The busy doctor who is examining many patients may miss complicated diagnoses which require more time. Too often, the specialists are viewed as cold and unsympathetic to the devastation that a diagnosis of developmental delay brings to the parents. Another contributing factor is the complexity of autism itself. There are often multiple diagnoses and the parents are caught trying to understand why the pediatrician writes “PDD NOS” and the neurologist puts “ASD”. Too many acronyms, not enough information and so the patient turns to the web. Finally, there are the non-doctor doctors out there who offer claims of cure and magic bullets to fix the child. Who wouldn’t want to get a completely “cured” child – even if it costs your home and future? What is the answer? Find a really good plumber! At this time, with the lack of state-of-the-art, the most accomplished doctors for autism are physicians who have specialized in the diagnosis and treatment of affected individuals, and attend frequent conferences including the Defeat Autism Now community of physicians. If you try to diagnose and treat autism yourself, you may occasionally get some results, but you also might create a flood. Dr. Udell is a Board-Certified Pediatrician and Neonatologist who practices Developmental Medicine in Weston. You are invited to read his blog www.theautismdoctor.com.

FAMILY FUN
It was an afternoon of old-fashioned fun at Gator Run Family Fun Day. Hundreds of families enjoyed entertainment, rides and attractions. Kids had a blast with all the activities including a rock climbing wall, obstacle course, bungee jumping, and fun yet challenging games based on the TV show “Minute To Win It.” Entertainment included a Pure Energy DJ, dancers from Sundance and the Avanmore Academy of Irish Dance, Billy the Marlin and the Florida Panthers. Food was provided by Domenick’s Pizza, Publix, Jamba Juice and Dippin’ Dots. Approximately 1,000 people attended. Gator Run Family Fun Day was sponsored by the school’s PTA.

FUTURE FARMERS

Preschool children at Chabad of Weston planted vegetables and flowers in honor of the Jewish holiday Tu B’Shevat, which is the new year for trees. The planting activities taught science, math, and sequencing, as well as responsibility and caring. The children also took a field trip to Natural Wonders strawberry farm. This fun outing gave the young students great insight into the natural process of plant growth, not to mention the chance to taste the sweet strawberries they snipped off the stems with their own scissors.

COLLEGE BOUND

Years of athletic and academic dedication have paid off for two Weston students. The seniors at Archbishop Edward A. McCarthy High School will be bringing their game to the next level; both have signed to play college ball next year. T.J. Jurko will play volleyball at New Jersey Institute of Technology and Jose Brizuela will play baseball at Florida State University.

SAFETY FIRST

Congratulations to Melanie Blethen, a fifth grader at Eagle Point Elementary School. Her poster warning children to never leave a safe area with a stranger won first place in the National Hispanic Heritage Safety Poster contest sponsored by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. Melanie’s winning illustration is now hanging in the NCME headquarters in Washington DC and will be printed on bookmarks to be distributed at schools, libraries and community centers nationwide. A copy of her poster also hangs in the Eagle Point front office. Melanie also won a laptop computer.

CHILDREN HELPING CHILDREN

Students in Mr. Schotta’s fourth grade class at Eagle Point Elementary School were recognized for their culinary creativity and charitable efforts. The class was voted the winner of a gingerbread house decorating contest at the Hyatt Regency Bonaventure. Eagle Point students and hotel volunteers worked together to decorate gingerbread houses which were displayed in the resort lobby for the holidays. Hyatt Regency Bonaventure presented a $500 donation to the Sun-Sentinel Children’s Fund in honor of Mr. Schotta’s class. Pictured here are Mr. Schotta (standing, right) and his students, along with Hyatt Regency Bonaventure General Manager Bruce McDonald (left), Sun Sentinel representative Mary Helen Olejnik and Hyatt Regency Bonaventure Executive Chef Bob Axenfeld. Relay For Life encourages people from all walks of life to come together to celebrate cancer survivors and raise money to fight this devastating disease. Last year, the Weston Relay raised $168,000 for the American Cancer Society. It was the number one Relay in Broward County. The 2011 Relay For Life of Weston begins at 6pm on April 16th at the Cypress Bay track. To learn more about how you can support the Weston Relay visit www.relayforlife.org/WESTONFL.

COSTUMES AND CARTIER

Weston Jewelers hosted a masquerade cocktail party to introduce Cartier’s new Precious Timepiece Collection of exquisitely jeweled watches and one of a kind timepieces. Weston Jewelers was one of the few retailers selected by Cartier to preview this magnificent collection, which was on display at the store for a limited engagement. WESTON U TO THE RESCUE

Weston University students got a behind the scenes look at Fire and Emergency Medical Services. The students visited Fire Station #81 where they toured the equipment, suited up for a mock call, and learned about the engine and rescue technology and capabilities. After their hands on fire experience, they traveled downtown Ft. Lauderdale to see where emergency calls originate at Broward County’s dispatch and communications headquarters.

“Be a Sport and Give FISP Your Support.” Two-hundred people met that challenge by attending the 10th annual Florida Initiative for Suicide Prevention (FISP) Dinner Dance. The event raised over $40,000 to provide programs and educational services to prevent suicide and to support survivors. The FISP Humanitarian of the Year Award was presented to Polly Wilkie. Guests dined and danced the night away to music by The Five Boroughs, an 11-piece doo-wop band.

Effective and Convenient Laser Hair Removal

T

By anGélica Briceño, medical aSSiStant

he appeal of laser hair removal stems from its effectiveness and convenience. Laser hair removal can easily treat large areas of hair growth in a relatively short amount of time. For example, an entire body can be treated in two to three hours and a full back can be treated in as little as one hour. Through laser hair removal patients can enjoy an effective treatment and receive optimum results. A permanent reduction in unwanted hair and soft, smooth skin are a few of the results patients will experience. Hair in unwanted places or excessive hair has been a long-standing problem for both women and men. Traditional methods of hair removal such as shaving, tweezing or waxing have proven to be inconvenient, temporary, and often result in painful ingrown hairs. And although home selftreatments may be cheaper they do not offer the permanent results like laser does. When you consider that laser hair removal can be finished in a few sessions, versus being performed daily over a persons’ lifetime, laser hair removal is much more effective. Laser hair removal provides excellent results with less risk of skin damage or irritation. The use of depilatories or hair removal creams, actually melt away skin cells, and can cause mild to severe skin irritation. Using strong chemical products on your skin can upset the delicate pH balance of the skin and cause rashes. And, while hair removal creams can provide good results, they are also only temporary. Electrolysis is another alternative to laser hair removal. Electrolysis hair removal applies an electric current to a fine needle inserted into a single hair follicle root. The electrical current heats the root of the hair to an extreme temperature, in effect burning it, and inhibiting it from producing any new hair. While electrolysis hair removal does offer permanent results, it is a slow, painful process that most often requires multiple sessions to completely destroy the hair follicles. Unlike electrolysis which destroys each hair root individually laser hair removal treatments are much more effective as it destroys many hair follicles at once. Because of this, areas can be treated with a laser in a fraction of the time needed for electrolysis. Smaller areas can be treated in 15 minutes allowing patients to return to work or normal activities immediately. Patients can now experience a convenient and effective permanent reduction of hair by a laser hair removal treatment and have satisfying results.
