very year we welcome spring as a sign of renewal and progress. After this winter’s prolonged cold-weather period we can finally enjoy the pleasant temperatures and sunshine that South Florida is famous for. While we watch the news reports of the last snow and ice storms ravaging our northern states, we welcome our visitors from those colder climates. And we realize just HOW LUCKY WE ARE ! Of course not everything is perfect with the economy still in dire need of rebuilding and with the occasional hurricane visiting us, but in the overall scheme of things FLORIDA is the place we choose to live. And rightly so. Where else can you see alligators in their natural habitat and Mickey & Co. in their not-so-natural habitat – all in the same day ? Where else can you get a sunburn at the beach during the day and endless entertainment during the night ? Where else can you go flats fishing on a secluded sandbar and go cruising the intracoastal dining scene - all on the same boat trip ? Only in Florida ! Wine and Dine Weekend to Benefit Harvest Drive
hanksgiving was months ago, but the Harvest Drive is still hard at work. Now in its 19th year, this Weston-based food drive has expanded into a full-fledged corporation serving Broward County’s hungry all year round. On Saturday, April 2nd, Broward Collision is pleased to present the WestonLawyers.com 2011 Wine & Dine to benefit the Harvest Drive. This event is spearheaded by several longtime Harvest Drive supporters. “Michael Freedland and Anthony Russo from WestonLawyers.com and Keith Petron from Broward Collision came to me and said they wanted to do something more to help the Harvest Drive,” explains Harvest Drive Founder Renee Herman. “They’ve always been so generous and supportive and to take on this event is incredible.” Herman is hoping that in addition to raising much needed funds, the Wine & Dine will raise awareness about the Harvest Drive. It started as a small food drive at Country Isles Elementary School and has grown into a massive mission, with eight collection sites and over 125 schools now participating throughout Broward County. Thanks to these efforts, last year 1,582 families received a Thanksgiving meal plus ten bags of groceries, as well other necessities.

It begins on Saturday evening with the Wine & Dine dinner. The evening will feature a wine tasting, delicious meal, wonderful entertainment, as well as a silent and live

auction. The fun continues on Monday at the Rotary Club of Weston’s WestonLawyers.com Scholarship Golf Classic. This event raises thousands of dollars for Weston Rotary scholarships. These scholarships are awarded to Cypress Bay and Western high school students who have demonstrated academic achievement, involvement in community service activities and financial need. According to Herman, promoting the two events together is only natural because not only do both programs benefit children, but the Rotary has been a huge Harvest Drive supporter over the years. “Not only do they donate much-needed food items, but they donate manpower. The Harvest Drive would not be the success it is without our Rotary volunteers.” Help support the Harvest Drive by attending the WestonLawyers.com Wine & Dine presented by Broward Collision. Student Artist Showcase Recognizes Tremendous Talent

mpressive is the best word to describe the artwork featured at the 5th Annual Student Artist Showcase presented by the Arts Council of Greater Weston. The artwork was on exhibit at the Weston Branch Library last month for all to admire. 173 of Weston’s most talented young artists submitted projects they completed in school to this juried art show. A panel of judges from the local arts community judged the work based on originality, creativity, reflection, visual perspective and craftsmanship. In the Kindergarten through second grade division, first grader Rebecca Ross from Country Isles Elementary won first prize, second grader Julian Escobar from Three Village Montessori won second, and first grader Angie Landivar from Imagine Charter School won third prize. In the third through fifth grade division, third grader Alfredo Trisini from The Sagemont School won first prize, fifth grader Alyssa Mendez from Eagle Point Elementary won second, and fourth grader Joaquim Rodriguez from Everglades Elementary won third. In the middle school division, eighth grader Innes Andovska from Tequesta Trace Middle School won first prize, seventh grader Jorge Barter from Tequesta

Yang won third prize. Honorable mentions were given to Cypress Bay twelfth grader Hannah Rand and Western High School junior Andrea Marquez. The winners were announced at a special reception. Weston City Commissioner Angel Gomez presented the first, second and third prize winner in each grade division with a small cash prize from the Arts Council of Greater Weston. Their work was also featured at the Weston ArtWalk and ShowTime. Every participant received a certificate of participation.

Trace won second, and sixth grader Sophia Rivera from Weston Christian Academy won third place. In the ninth and tenth grade division, tenth grader Andrea Sucre from The Sagemont School won first prize, ninth grader Katherine Harris from Cypress Bay High School won second, and tenth grader Isabela DeSouza from Cypress Bay won third prize. B’nai Aviv Synagogue will honor its heroes at its gala dinner dance on Saturday, March 27th. “Celebrating B’nai Aviv’s Superstars” will recognize seven temple members for their service and commitment. It will also honor Broward Sheriff’s Officer Maury Hernandez as the first recipient of the Hero-Gibor Award. That award will be presented by Broward County Sheriff Al Lamberti on behalf of the members of B’nai Aviv. Sgt. Maury Hernandez was a security officer at the synagogue who was injured in the line of duty. He was shot in the head by a motorcyclist during a routine traffic stop in 2007. Despite his life threatening injuries, he continues to improve and hopes to return to full time duty as a BSO detective in the near future. “Maury holds a very special place in our hearts and we will be forever grateful for the service he gave to B’nai Aviv as a security officer to our early childhood education program during the time of his unfortunate accident,” states Meredith Chandler, gala chairperson. The event will also honor temple members: Michelle and Craig Donner; Alice and Ralph Francis; Ethel and Art Ginsburg; Adele and Dr. David Pick; Stacy and Scott Silver; Ali and Dr. Michael Wasserman; and Marissa and Dr. Michael Zoldan. emple Dor Dorim recently held a special Shabbat service honoring the Broward Sheriff’s Office for its devotion and dedicated service to the community and the congregation. Fifteen officers and more than 300 congregants attended the service. This is no small feat. According to Susan Sasse, Principal of Gator Run Elementary School, “Continuing the tradition of excellence in an ‘A’ rated school is quite a challenge. The state increases the proficiency standards each year, which raises the bar for all our schools and students.” Mrs. Sasse credits her school’s academic success to the strong partnership between the school and parents. Heather Hedman-DeVaughn, Principal of Manatee Bay Elementary School, agrees that parent involvement is crucial. “The success of Manatee Bay is a direct result of the partnership, commitment and dedication of all Stakeholders (administration, teachers, staff, students, parents and community) working together for the common goal of high student achievement. Weston Strikers Win State Championship

ongratulations to the Weston Strikers. The Girls 10 and Under team is the 2011 American Youth Soccer Organization (AYSO) Florida State Champion. The girls took home first-place trophies after clinching the AYSO State Tournament, which was held at Pierson Park in Wellington. The team played seven games in three days. The Weston Strikers advanced to the semifinals after a strong showing in the quarterfinals, with wins of 6-0 and 7-0. The semifinal game was a nail-biter, but the girls held on for a 1-0 victory. They managed to rally in the final match as well. The Weston Strikers stormed back from an early 1-0 deficit by scoring three goals in the third and fourth quarters, respectively. The girls beat Boynton Beach, 6-1, in the championship game. Congratulations to Coach Juan Ruiz, Assistant Coach Chris Evripidou, and the Weston Strikers 10U team. Way to go girls!

ongratulations to Coach Thompson’s all star soccer team. The Boys 10 and Under team is the 2011 American Youth Soccer Organization (AYSO) Florida State Champion. The boys, who have nicknamed themselves the “Undefeated,” clinched the playoff tournament, which took place at Pierson Park in Wellington. The team played seven games in three days. The boys easily won all three games on Saturday without letting any of their opponents score. They won the quarterfinals, scoring 5 goals in each game against teams from Boynton Beach and Homestead. Emotions ran high during the semifinal game. Not only was this a close one, with the team winning 3-2, but their opponent was Coach DeMeo’s team from Weston. The two all star teams had scrimmaged against each other while practicing for the state tournament – and Coach DeMeo’s team won all the scrimmages. With the taste of victory now fresh in their mouths, the boys went on to win the championship game against Key West, 4-3. Congratulations to Coach Karl Thompson, Assistant Coach Carlos Ruffo, and all the boys on the “Undefeated” AYSO 10U state championship team.

They can even happen to you.

ome of the most common injuries in a car accident or slip and fall case involve a victim’s head. A blow to the head can seem minor at first. It might not cause any immediate pain, bruising, or bleeding. However, hours later it can turn serious, even fatal. It is very common for someone who has had a fall or been in a car accident to appear perfectly fine immediately after the impact but then suddenly and rapidly deteriorate. After the “accident” – which doesn’t have to be serious at all – a person can seem perfectly normal, but there may be a silent skull fracture or a broken blood vessel bleeding in the brain or between the skull and the brain. As blood leaks from a ruptured artery and puts pressure on the brain, the classic symptoms of a traumatic brain injury begin to appear: nausea, severe headache, glassy eyes, or sudden sleepiness. Symptoms can take anywhere from 5 minutes to 3 hours – or even several days – to begin. For anyone involved in a car accident, sports injury, or just a slip in the driveway, recognizing the signs of brain injury early is critical. Preventing permanent brain damage depends on getting to a hospital within the first few hours because damage caused by brain swelling often is irreversible. Trauma teams are taught that when people have been in a car crash and someone involved in the accident dies, they should assume that everyone else has serious injuries – even if they look good and say they feel fine. If you are involved in a car accident or slip and fall and suffer head trauma please remember these rules: ▸ Go to the emergency room. Even if you feel like everything is fine, it is mandatory for someone in an emergency setting to evaluate your medical condition. ▸ Mandate that a CT scan of your head is performed. Physical examination alone may not be sufficient to conclusively diagnose a brain injury or internal complications. ▸ If you experience the “classic signs and symptoms” of a head trauma, advise family members of what you are feeling so that they can advocate for you with your treating health care providers. An emergency room that is busy with lots of patients may be eager to send you home despite your medical history. Family members can help you demand admission to the hospital for further necessary evaluation. ▸ Following discharge from the emergency room, make sure that you are supervised by family members who will be actively looking for changes in your mental status. The sooner these changes are discovered, the sooner you can be taken back to the emergency room. ▸ Follow-up with your primary care physician following an emergency room visit. It is best not to take any chances with your medical condition and have it re-evaluated by someone who knows your medical history best. Country Isles’ Guest Author Inspires Students

T

his year’s Author-In-Residence at Country Isles Elementary School was a special treat for both the students and faculty. For not only is Jayne Bonilla a noted children’s book author, she is also a Weston resident whose children attended Country Isles. To her, it was a gift to be able to give back to the school that gave so much to her family. As in past years, the day began with two presentations by the guest author to the student body, one geared toward students in the younger grades and the other for older students. Bonilla was then the guest of honor at a special luncheon sponsored by the PTA. Each year the school holds a contest to select which students will dine with the guest author. According to Phyllis Kay, the school’s reading/curriculum specialist and Author-In-Residence coordinator, the contest was inspired by Bonilla’s beloved book, Shirt for Dessert, which deals with the importance of eating healthy foods. Students in kindergarten through second grade were invited to create a picture illustrating what makes a good meal, while students in grades three through five were asked to write an essay answering, “Why is it important to eat healthy foods?”

Following the luncheon, Bonilla hosted a Writer’s Workshop for select fourth grade students. She used this forum to share one of her new stories, as well as some writing tips. Bonilla began by reiterating her writing philosophy. “Today is really about creativity and authenticity, being true to yourself.” She explained that the key to good writing is to CREATE, an acronym she shared during her morning presentation. “C is for courage; share your own slice of individuality and don’t worry what others think. R is for reach; dig deep inside you and get in touch with your feelings. E is for express yourself. A is for authentic; be unique. T is for thoughts, where your ideas stem from. And E is for emotions,” recapped Bonilla, explaining that these elements are essential to being a good writer. She then went on to identify the two types of writing: inspired and invited. According to Bonilla, inspired writing is when you write about something that means something to you, whereas invited writing is when you are asked to write something, such as homework. “My strength is inspired writing. When I am invited to write, I always start by thinking about why I was asked to write. This leads to inspiration,” explained Bonilla. “You need to learn to change your thought process so that everything you write is inspired and meaningful.” She then shared her secrets to becoming a strong writer, using yet another acronym. This led Bonilla to share her favorite quote: “It is better to improve than it is to prove.” Victor Paes-Leme, one of the fourth graders invited to attend the Writer’s Workshop, took this to mean “It’s better to make something better and how you want it to be than to show it off.” In addition to sharing her tricks of the trade with the Country Isles students, Bonilla also shared one of her current projects. She read Sheila’s Magic Wand, a new picture book she is hoping to publish. It’s a beautifully written story with a powerful message to share the magic in you. Although written as a children’s book, its underlying message of hope and peace and recovery is an inspiration to all ages. Bonilla has a knack for writing whimsical yet inspirational stories. Her first book, If Hurricane’s Were Candy Canes, was about overcoming tragedy and looking at the good in things. “It was inspired by a little girl I met while volunteering in a tent city following Hurricane Andrew,” she said. “I was so touched by Millie that I just had to write and share her story. Here was a little girl who had lost everything, but she did not miss her toys and stuff. She was just happy she had her family.” Bonilla donated $70,000 in proceeds from the sale of that book to hurricane recovery efforts in the U.S. and Caribbean. Although she has only published two books, Bonilla says she has written over 25 children’s stories, including four more stories following the adventures of the Barley family first introduced in Shirt for Dessert. Bonilla has also written an adult psychological thriller. “I’m very excited about that project. Everglades Elementary School Students Run for Technology

orget selling wrapping paper or candy, students at Everglades Elementary School used foot power to raise money for their school this year. The PTA sponsored the first annual FundRunners

Fun Run. In addition to raising much needed funds, the event raised awareness and school spirit. In the weeks leading up to the Fun Run, a team from FundRunners spoke to students about their big IDEAS on attitude and character development. From this

Students solicited pledges from family and friends for the number of laps they could run around the specially-designed FundRunners track. Teachers marked the students’ laps on the back of their Fun Run t-shirts. Most of the students completed 30 of the maximum 36 laps. That brought in a lot of money for the school. Gator Run Second Graders Enjoy Edible Education on Tasty Tuesday

W

hat do Rice Krispies Treats and Fruit Roll-ups have to do with math? More than you would think. Second graders at Gator Run Elementary School learned fractions using these tasty treats. Once a month, on Tasty Tuesday, students enjoy an edible education. The concept was introduced last year by Denise Boehm, who teaches the gifted and high achiever class. She explains that Tasty Tuesday is a hands-on means of teaching the fundamentals of education – reading, writing and arithmetic – as well as problem solving skills and even public speaking. “This is project-based learning. The students get so much more out of this than a basic lesson.” Of course, the students don’t realize their teachers are sneaking lessons into their special snack sessions. “Students learn sequencing by following the recipe directions step by step,” explains Mrs. Boehm. “They also develop problem solving skills. For instance, one table discovered they could use a textbook to help flatten their Rice Krispies Treats to make the Cereal Sushi.” Tasty Tuesday also reinforces reading and writing skills. Students copy each month’s recipe into their Tasty Tuesday Cookbook, listing all the ingredients and the direc-

On that day the students become the teachers. “The child directs the parent on how to prepare the recipe. Then they share snack and write their review together,” explains Mrs. Boehm. “Many times this is the first time parents have seen their children take on a leadership role. tions to create the yummy treat. But the real writing comes after snack time, when the students write their reviews. They include what they liked about the recipe and how they could improve it. Maybe these kids have been exposed to too many episodes of Top Chef on TV, because there was no shortage of suggestions when Mrs. Boehm’s class discussed ways to improve upon the Cereal Sushi recipe. One student suggested dipping the candy sushi into chocolate sauce to simulate soy sauce and another offered the option of adding green frosting for wasabi. Other suggestions may have been more befitting of Bizarre Foods. One student suggested using crushed potato chips instead of Rice Krispies Treats. Another recommended using Oreo crumbs instead of red sprinkles to simulate the sushi roe. With their minds full of ideas and their bellies full of candy sushi, the students all sat down with their writer’s notebooks to work on their reviews. “Don’t worry about spelling. Remember, this is your first draft,” encouraged Mrs. Boehm as her class began the assignment. She sees the Tasty Tuesday Cookbook as a wonderful teaching tool. “Now, at this point in the school year, we talk about showing your voice with your writing, using strong vocabulary, and focusing on sentence structure.” She says it’s also a great way to track the students’ progress over the course of the school year. “It’s amazing to see how their writing has improved, as well as their hand-

The Cereal Sushi, made with Rice Krispies Treats, Fruit Roll-ups, Swedish Fish, and red sugar, was a big hit with many of the students. “I liked making it because I got to learn the basics of making real sushi,” shared Jean Qian, who also enjoys real sushi. Both Jean and classmate Hanna Stockel liked October’s Spider Pudding Pie better. It was a Halloween-themed Tasty Tuesday project made with chocolate pudding, Oreos, M&M’s and Twizzlers. “I liked that best because it had a lot of stuff I like to eat,” says Hanna. Tyler Decker is not picky. He’s liked all of the projects. “Tasty Tuesday is fun, especially because we get two snacks that day. One before lunch and another after.” Mrs. Boehm says the teachers try to tie the recipe to a lesson the children are studying. “Our first Tasty Tuesday we made caramel apples because we had just finished studying Johnny Appleseed.” Last year, the students created an Edible Earth with each ingredient representing one part of the earth’s structure. Students used a maraschino cherry as the core, marshmallow as the outer core, a Rice Krispies Treat as the mantle, and crushed cookies as the earth’s crust. reventing colon cancer may be easier than you think. Most cases of colon cancer can be prevented by having a screening colonoscopy. Colon cancer is one of few diseases where normal body tissue – in this case, polyps – actually turns deadly. Removing nonmalignant polyps during a colonoscopy procedure prevents colon cancer from developing. Colon cancer is one of the most prevalent cancers in the US. It is also an equal opportunity destroyer, oblivious to gender, race or income. People at increased risk for colon cancer include those with one or more immediate relatives with the disease, an inherited tendency to form polyps, a long history of ulcerative colitis, or a history of breast or uterine cancer. However, they are in the minority. The disease occurs most often in those who least expect it. According to Steven Wexner, MD, chief academic officer and chair of Colorectal Surgery at Cleveland Clinic Florida, “Colonoscopy is considered the gold standard test for detecting and eliminating polyps. Other tests are simply less effective.” ▸ Sigmoidoscopy: Only checks the lower portion of the colon. ▸ Hemoccult test: Detects blood in the stool, but is often inaccurate, giving false negative reports to as many as 50% of patients with colon cancer and false positive reports to many patients who do not have the disease. A positive barium enema requires a colonoscopy follow up. ▸ Virtual colonoscopy: Might be a substitute some day, but is now unaffordable. For this reason, it is now recommended by every major gastrointestinal society that both men and women have a screening colonoscopy at age 50. Anyone at increased risk should be screened by age 40 – earlier in some cases. The need for future screening tests is determined by the findings at the first screening as well as the patient’s risk factors. Some symptoms of colon cancer include blood in the stool and pain the lower abdomen. More than half of all people diagnosed with colon cancer have no symptoms at all, so it is simply not wise to wait for the appearance of symptoms. Imagine Charter School Fundraiser Promotes Fitness and Character

tudents at the Imagine Charter School at Weston enjoyed a healthy alternative to traditional product sales for this year’s school fundraiser. The school participated in the Boosterthon Fun Run

Experience to raise much-needed money to purchase textbooks and computers. This unique program combines a fun fitness event, an interactive character education program and a highly profitable school fundraiser. In the days leading up to the fun run, team members from Boosterthon visited classrooms teaching students what it means to be a leader. Using the “Leader Launch” acronym, students learned that leaders are Learners, Active, Uplifting, Not bullies, Courageous and Helpers. At the same time, students were busy obtaining pledges based on how many laps they could run. “To make it more fun, the school set goals on how many states and countries could assist with the pledges,” said Annemarie Kelleher, activities director at Imagine Charter School at Weston. “Imagine at Weston is happy to report that our state challenge brought pledges in from over 42 states and, even more exciting is that, students connected with friends and relatives in over 38 countries. This, in itself, was a fabulous geography lesson.” For the students, the actual run was the best part of this program. According to students in Mrs. Najera’s fifth grade class, “We enjoyed that we got to run and have fun instead of just getting our parents to do the fundraising.” The event was a huge success. If It Ain’t Broke...Make Certain!

f it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!” We are all familiar with this statement. Perhaps you have even used it a few times yourself! However, these can be dangerous words if referring to one’s health. People who believe this about their health may be heading down a slippery slope to serious health problems. The “if it ain’t broke...” belief is founded on the notion that since pain usually means there is a problem, no pain must mean there’s no problem. Those that hold this view make decisions about their health based entirely on how they feel. Tragically, health care is littered with catastrophic examples demonstrating the naiveté of this belief. Heart disease and cancer are two extreme examples on a long list of conditions that can develop silently, with no symptoms. Back pain is one such condition. Remember the time you bent over and suddenly couldn’t move because of pain? That back problem didn’t just happen. Ninety percent of back and neck pain is a direct result of failure in management of spinal health. In other words, spinal pain is not the start of a problem, it is the end result.

A spine can be dysfunctional (not working correctly) for months or years before any pain is felt, thanks to the body’s many compensating mechanisms. However, when the body runs out of ways to compensate, or the compensating mechanisms finally give up, the white flag goes up in the form of pain signals. Science is now telling us there is more to silent spinal dysfunction problems than even most health practitioners are aware. Spinal dysfunction is usually the result of postural distortion (imbalance), and abnormal spinal alignment and curvature. It is neither meant to minimize the pain of the hurt that was caused, nor to let the other person off the hook for inappropriate or disrespectful behavior. Forgiveness releases you. Forgiveness is not necessarily reconciliation. Although forgiveness does not depend on reconciliation, the degree to which reconciliation can occur does depend on the forgiveness. Reconciliation is possible only when the forgiver and the person being forgiven can come to an understanding regarding the offense. Forgiveness is not revictimization. Many people avoid forgiveness because they fear they may become the victim of the person who has wronged them, again. In the process of forgiveness, we may realize the need for boundaries. We may become aware of decisions we need to make about our relationship to the wrongdoer in order to create a more balanced healthy relationship.

There’s Still Time To Trim Your 2010 Tax Bill

ven though 2010 is history, you may still be able to trim your 2010 tax bill. Be sure you don’t overlook the following actions and deductions that could save you money.

▸ Maximize your 2010 IRA contribution. You have until April 18, 2011, to make deductible 2010 contributions. The maximum 2010 contribution is $5,000 ($6,000 if you were 50 or older last year). ▸ If you changed jobs in 2010, make sure you didn’t have excess social security taxes withheld. Claim credit for the excess on your Form 1040 if you paid over $6,622. ▸ Look into itemizing deductions if you usually take the standard deduction. Search for allowable deductions that you might have overlooked, such as the restored 2010 deduction for state and local sales taxes in lieu of deducting state and local income taxes. ▸ Medical deductions are allowable to the extent they exceed 7.5% of adjusted gross income (AGI). Don’t forget items such as eyeglasses and hearing aids. You can deduct mileage for 2010 medical appointments at 16.5¢ a mile, plus parking and toll fees. ▸ Don’t overlook tax preparation fees, safe deposit costs, and certain investment advice. They all qualify as miscellaneous deductions, subject to a 2% of AGI limit. ▸ Up to $2,500 of student loan interest is deductible whether you itemize or not. ▸ The deduction of up to $4,000 for qualified tuition and school expenses is available for 2010. Qualifying amounts for you, your spouse, and dependents may be deductible. Choosing the Right Summer Experience

elting ice pops dripping down arms, the stickiness rinsed with a run through the sprinklers. Color War, Capture the Flag, potato sack races…shaving cream, cheers and chants, watermelon poolside…crafts, flashlights, card games and gooey S’mores. As parents reminisce, these are the memories they share… these are the memories of summer. With summer almost here, it’s time to sort through choices and make plans for the family. First and foremost on parent’s minds is what will their child do for the summer? Travel camp, Day camp, sleep away or Sports camp? Maybe the choice is between a specialty camp like Drama or Baseball or maybe it’s a trip up North to stay with the grandparents. With so many choices, how does a parent decide? So many times we base our decisions on what our own memories are and this is how we decide for our children. If you loved camp, you might decide that your child will also, and so you choose a camp based on that experience. If you have memories, though, of not liking a particular camp experience you might assume the same for your child and avoid those types of camps all together. Although it’s understandable that our own experiences from childhood influence our bias, it’s not necessarily in the best interest of our children. Whether the experience was good or not for mom or dad doesn’t necessarily mean it will be the right fit for their child. The first thing a parent needs to ask themselves is what type of camp meets their individual child’s needs. Sit down and list their interests. Does your child love art? Love to play sports? was flooded by mail asking what to do with small windows. My advice is always to think big. Just because the opening is small, short or narrow doesn’t mean we have to dress it that way. Think of how we style our clothing to make ourselves seem taller; we use stripes. To add some body, we wear horizontal stripes. To create an elongated torso, we wear our belts below the waist. To translate this into your drapery, place your tiebacks lower to make the panel seem longer. Height: To create height, go higher than your window. Normal is 3” above. Once you have soffit space above, use it. Go ceiling height if you have 9 ft. ceilings. Width: To make your window look wider than it is, extend your rods as much as you can to the sides. If your view is important to you, make sure blinds and drape panels stack off to the sides onto the wall. If not, the fabric hangs in the window and conceals your view. This is called “stack back” and is definitely something you want to discuss with your drapery designer. Add Layers: The pictures use a contrast band for interest, as in the green and copper drapery, or a Roman shade in a natural material or in a neutral fabric. By adding layers, you are doing two things: ▸ You are increasing the functionality of your window because you can raise and lower the shade to control your privacy. ▸ You are adding dimension to you window. Reupholster or Replace?

or every reason to reupholster a piece of furniture there is often an equally good reason to replace it. My clients frequently ask me to reupholster sofas and chairs in the belief that they will be saving money. The labor cost to refurbish upholstered furniture is more than most people expect because they don’t realize that the piece has to be “un-made” before it can be “re-made.” There are nearly always necessary repairs to be made to the frame, springs to be re-tied, and seat and back cushion insert to be replaced. Also, the quantity of fabric required, especially if patterned, may be far more than expected. In addition, many fabrics need to be backed before they can be applied to the frame. Although it is rarely true that reupholstering furniture is the most economical choice there may be some other very good reasons to recover a piece. One needs to consider the characteristics of the sofa itself. Is the dimension and design perfect for your room and your family? Is the sofa an unusual shape or size that may be difficult to replace? Do you know that the sofa is a quality piece that has high quality features like eight-way hand tied springs, kiln dried wood frame, or corner blocking? Is there a sentimental attachment to the furniture in question? These are all valid reasons to reupholster your furniture. On the other hand, if the piece of furniture fails to qualify with any of the considerations listed above, it may be more cost effective to replace it. If the sofa is an outdated style, or was inexpensively made and is not extremely comfortable or attractive investing more in it will not change any of those characteristics. And no amount of fabric, trim, or throw pillows will correct a proportion problem if the piece of furniture is too

.S. citizens and legal permanent residents can petition their relatives to live and work in this country. If the relatives live abroad, the procedure is known as consular processing. It begins only after Citizenship and Immigration Service (CIS) approves the petition. Most importantly, a visa number must be available. They become available when the priority date is current on the Visa Bulletin of the State Department. Different categories of relatives are given different priorities. The spouse or child of a legal permanent resident (LPR) is allowed to immigrate much sooner than the adult son or daughter of that LPR. Thus, the priority date of an LPR’s spouse will become current much sooner than the priority date of an LPR’s adult daughter. Consular processing begins when CIS forwards the approved petition to the National Visa Center (NVC). When the visa number becomes available, the NVC sends a packet of information to the relative abroad, using the address listed on the petition. After the relative completes and returns the paperwork, the NVC processes the packet. Next, the NVC notifies the State Department. An immigrant visa processing appointment will be scheduled for the relative and all qualifying family members at the nearest consulate that issues immigrant visas. At the end of the process, the consulate grants an immigrant visa. The relatives enter the United States with that visa (as opposed to a tourist visa, for example). The day of entry is the date they become legal permanent residents. Green cards and Social Security cards arrive by mail afterwards. From the time the priority date is current, the process takes from six to 12 months if documents and information are provided immediately. If the relative is in the United States, the process is completely different. That is known as adjustment of status, which allows work authorization. The problem is that many individuals have what they believe to be an understanding of what lies ahead, but they are often mistaken. Everybody seems to know somebody who has a “horror’ story of what happened to a friend or family member as a result of a divorce. Here are some misconceptions that I hope can be cleared up.

▸ “I am going to loose everything because the courts favor women.” The reality is that, except for very limited circumstances, all assets and liabilities are divided equally. I have never experienced a circumstance where one party received 100% of the assets. ▸ “If I earned the money, its mine.”Any funds earned during the marriage by either party are joint marital property. As I often explain to clients, for every dollar earned, each spouse gets fifty cents. ▸ “My retirement is my sole property.” Once again, if the funds in the retirement account were invested during the marriage they are considered joint marital property and will be equally divided. ▸ “I want sole custody of the children.” Florida no longer issues a custody designation. Neither parent will be “given custody,” since that term no longer exists in the statutes. Each parent is considered to be equal and as such decisions concerning the children should be jointly made. ▸ “I am seeking a legal separation.” Florida does not recognize legal separations. Since this is a “no fault” state, the parties do not have to be separated either before or even during the divorce. ▸ “I am not seeking child support.” Parents cannot waive a child support obligation, since the support does not actually belong to the parents. This is the one area where the parties cannot waive the requirements of the law. ▸ “Only women can seek alimony.” Florida’s alimony statute does not preclude the payment of alimony to Husband’s. Alimony is based upon a number of factors, including length of marriage and the respective income of both parties. ▸ “I have the children most often, so therefore the children and I can relocate to another state.” Florida has a very strict relocation statute. It requires either consent from the other parent or a court order. The requirements are based upon a number of factors, which all relate to the best interests of the children. These are just a few of the misconceptions I seem to address on a fairly regular basis. I know that there are many others. When Is the Right Time for Homeowners to File for Bankruptcy Protection?

any homeowners are under the false impression that they should file for bankruptcy protection the moment they fall behind on their mortgage payments. However, every consumer must be aware that bankruptcy should only be filed as a last resort, when absolutely necessary, and when all else fails. Based upon our experience in handling hundreds of consumer collection matters, foreclosures and bankruptcy cases, there are really just a few instances when a client must file for bankruptcy protection. One such situation is after a final foreclosure judgment has been entered and the homeowner is only days away from a public auction of the home. Filing for bankruptcy protection at this time will automatically cancel the foreclosure sale, and will provide the homeowner with some valuable time to complete a loan modification application or prívate short sale of the home prior to a public auction. Filing for bankruptcy protection at the outset of a foreclosure proceeding is highly unadvisable, especially in view of the fact that in 2010 the average time to complete a foreclosure in Broward County was 600 days.

Several other instances when a bankruptcy filing is appropriate are when a debtor is facing a garnishment of wages, seizure of his/her bank accounts, or when a creditor is attempting to repossess property or a vehicle after a final judgment. Under these limited circumstances, filing for bankruptcy makes absolute sense given that there is no time and possibly no legal grounds to attack the collection process in court. However, if a bankruptcy discharge is obtained too early, a consumer will not be able to file for bankruptcy protection again for another 8 years. The preferred type of bankruptcy is a Chapter 7, assuming that your monthly expenses exceed your income. If you qualify for a Chapter 7, all credit card debt, unpaid medical expenses, and all other unsecured debt is wiped out completely. Unfortunately, any debt owed to the federal government for student loans or IRS debt will not be wiped out in a bankruptcy. You also may not qualify for a Chapter 7 bankruptcy if you have other assets which you could sell to cover your debts. In that case, you may have to file under Chapter 13, to restructure your debt, and slowly pay all past due amounts over a period of 3 to 5 years. The bankruptcy code is not easy to navigate. If the bankruptcy petition is not presented correctly, not only will you not qualify for bankruptcy protection, but you may also be prevented from re-filing for 180 days or more. Wow! How Did He Pull Off That Shot?

ne of the greatest pressure shots of all time has to be from the 1982 US Open at Pebble Beach. When Tom Watson was heading into the tournament he practiced his short game a lot because he knew that he probably would have to rely on that part of his game more than any other. The greens at Pebble Beach are the roller coaster type, so if you miss a green then you have downhill recovery shots from heavy US Open length rough of bunkers.   He worked on chipping the ball off a down slope in deep grass, trying to loft it and land it softly. One thing people don’t realize about this kind of shot is that if you weaken your grip, it’s easier to keep the club face open. Set your left thumb straight down the grip, and weaken your right hand as well. Keep in mind that because you’re using a high lofted club, you have to swing harder. Watson birdied the last hole to beat Jack Nicklaus by two shots, but his chip in at 17 gave him the cushion to know that a par would win. As a student at Stanford, he went down to Pebble Beach probably a dozen times, and he always played a little game with himself that he had to par to win the US Open.   This is the kind of practice and imagination that produces great results when applied. Causa: Boil potatoes in a large pot with salt water. Once cooked peel and while still hot mash them with a potato masher as to form a puree. Allow to cool off, knead until mixed and season with salt, white pepper, lime juice hot yellow pepper and oil according to your taste. On a large platter or dish, place the first layer of causa. Filling: Spread the first layer of causa with mayonnaise and cover with slices of avocado and boiled eggs. Sprinkle a little salt and spread some more mayonnaise. Spread a second layer of causa carefully pressing down on it. Place a layer of the seasoned chicken and cover with the last layer of causa. Decorate the top layer with chicken, red sweet pepper strips and parsley leaves. Decorate around the platter with lettuce leaves and avocado slices. Serves 6 people.

ne day, you look up and notice that there is a wet spot in your ceiling. Inch by inch the spot is getting larger and even starts to drip on to the floor. What is the next thing that most people would do? You would, I assume, call the plumber – right? Who would search the web for “drips in the ceiling,” try to understand all the possible causes of the wetness, open up the drywall and attempt to weld the hole in the pipe (or maybe it’s the joint, or something else altogether)? Yes, there is always someone who would attempt to perform this task, but it sounds pretty foolish to me. Plus, you could actually make things worse (think FLOOD). Yet, when many people have a complicated and sick child, they start searching the Internet for a diagnosis and even a cure, not a doctor! The web contains over 20 million pages of information about autism. Which page(s) should you believe? Which ones contain information that is incorrect and could make things worse for the child? That is what a pediatrician is for – to take an extensive history and perform a thorough physical examination, then give you as precise diagnosis as possible and work with the family to come up with a plan to get the best care. Then, you can read the Internet all that you want, talk to your pediatrician, explore other opinions and consider all of the

new information that you are trying to comprehend. Why doesn’t everyone take this approach? Why do so many people try to “fix the leak” themselves? Well, I’m afraid to say that the pediatric community should take a great deal of the responsibility here. That same pediatrician who claims that “all vaccinations are always safe” and “he’s a boy, so they speak later” has suffered a loss of confidence because of tunnel vision and an unsympathetic ear. The busy doctor who is examining many patients may miss complicated diagnoses which require more time. Too often, the specialists are viewed as cold and unsympathetic to the devastation that a diagnosis of developmental delay brings to the parents. Another contributing factor is the complexity of autism itself. There are often multiple diagnoses and the parents are caught trying to understand why the pediatrician writes “PDD NOS” and the neurologist puts “ASD”. Too many acronyms, not enough information and so the patient turns to the web. Finally, there are the non-doctor doctors out there who offer claims of cure and magic bullets to fix the child. Who wouldn’t want to get a completely “cured” child – even if it costs your home and future? What is the answer? Find a really good plumber! At this time, with the lack of state-of-the-art, the most accomplished doctors for autism are physicians who have specialized in the diagnosis and treatment of affected individuals, and attend frequent conferences including the Defeat Autism Now community of physicians. If you try to diagnose and treat autism yourself, you may occasionally get some results, but you also might create a flood. You may have missed the legendary rock concerts: Woodstock in upstate New York; The Beatles at Shea Stadium; and the 1985 Live Aid concerts held simultaneously at Wembley Stadium in London and JFK Stadium in Philadelphia. Now’s your chance to catch up when the Rock & Pop Masters return to Weston on Saturday, March 19th. A half-dozen legendary performers will take residents back to Rock ’n Roll’s glory days with the 7th Annual RPM Free Rock Concert in the Park, sponsored by the Rotary Club of Weston and the City of Weston. The Rock & Pop Masters show gets underway Saturday evening, March 19th at 7:00 pm at the Weston Regional Park. Bring your blanket or lawn chairs. This is a family friendly event for all ages, so show the kids you can still rock with the best of them!

FAMILY FUN
It was an afternoon of old-fashioned fun at Gator Run Family Fun Day. Hundreds of families enjoyed entertainment, rides and attractions. Kids had a blast with all the activities including a rock climbing wall, obstacle course, bungee jumping, and fun yet challenging games based on the TV show “Minute To Win It.” Entertainment included a Pure Energy DJ, dancers from Sundance and the Avanmore Academy of Irish Dance, Billy the Marlin and the Florida Panthers. Food was provided by Domenick’s Pizza, Publix, Jamba Juice and Dippin’ Dots. Approximately 1,000 people attended. Gator Run Family Fun Day was sponsored by the school’s PTA.

FUTURE FARMERS

Preschool children at Chabad of Weston planted vegetables and flowers in honor of the Jewish holiday Tu B’Shevat, which is the new year for trees. The planting activities taught science, math, and sequencing, as well as responsibility and caring. The children also took a field trip to Natural Wonders strawberry farm. This fun outing gave the young students great insight into the natural process of plant growth, not to mention the chance to taste the sweet strawberries they snipped off the stems with their own scissors.

COLLEGE BOUND

Years of athletic and academic dedication have paid off for two Weston students. The seniors at Archbishop Edward A. McCarthy High School will be bringing their game to the next level; both have signed to play college ball next year. T.J. Jurko will play volleyball at New Jersey Institute of Technology and Jose Brizuela will play baseball at Florida State University.

SAFETY FIRST

Congratulations to Melanie Blethen, a fifth grader at Eagle Point Elementary School. Her poster warning children to never leave a safe area with a stranger won first place in the National Hispanic Heritage Safety Poster contest sponsored by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. Melanie’s winning illustration is now hanging in the NCME headquarters in Washington DC and will be printed on bookmarks to be distributed at schools, libraries and community centers nationwide. A copy of her poster also hangs in the Eagle Point front office. Melanie also won a laptop computer.

CHILDREN HELPING CHILDREN

Students in Mr. Schotta’s fourth grade class at Eagle Point Elementary School were recognized for their culinary creativity and charitable efforts. The class was voted the winner of a gingerbread house decorating contest at the Hyatt Regency Bonaventure. Eagle Point students and hotel volunteers worked together to decorate gingerbread houses which were displayed in the resort lobby for the holidays. Hyatt Regency Bonaventure presented a $500 donation to the Sun-Sentinel Children’s Fund in honor of Mr. Schotta’s class. Weston Jewelers was one of the few retailers selected by Cartier to preview this magnificent collection, which was on display at the store for a limited engagement. Weston Jewelers was transformed into a turn of the century ballroom for the event, complete with models dressed in period costumes.

Weston University students got a behind the scenes look at Fire and Emergency Medical Services. The students visited Fire Station #81 where they toured the equipment, suited up for a mock call, and learned about the engine and rescue technology and capabilities. After their hands on fire experience, they traveled downtown Ft. Lauderdale to see where emergency calls originate at Broward County’s dispatch and communications headquarters.

“Be a Sport and Give FISP Your Support.” Two-hundred people met that challenge by attending the 10th annual Florida Initiative for Suicide Prevention (FISP) Dinner Dance. The event raised over $40,000 to provide programs and educational services to prevent suicide and to support survivors. The FISP Humanitarian of the Year Award was presented to Polly Wilkie. Guests dined and danced the night away to music by The Five Boroughs, an 11-piece doo-wop band.

Effective and Convenient Laser Hair Removal

he appeal of laser hair removal stems from its effectiveness and convenience. Laser hair removal can easily treat large areas of hair growth in a relatively short amount of time. For example, an entire body can be treated in two to three hours and a full back can be treated in as little as one hour. Through laser hair removal patients can enjoy an effective treatment and receive optimum results. A permanent reduction in unwanted hair and soft, smooth skin are a few of the results patients will experience. Hair in unwanted places or excessive hair has been a long-standing problem for both women and men. Traditional methods of hair removal such as shaving, tweezing or waxing have proven to be inconvenient, temporary, and often result in painful ingrown hairs. And although home selftreatments may be cheaper they do not offer the permanent results like laser does. When you consider that laser hair removal can be finished in a few sessions, versus being performed daily over a persons’ lifetime, laser hair removal is much more effective. Laser hair removal provides excellent results with less risk of skin damage or irritation. The use of depilatories or hair removal creams, actually melt away skin cells, and can cause mild to severe skin irritation. Using strong chemical products on your skin can upset the delicate pH balance of the skin and cause rashes. And, while hair removal creams can provide good results, they are also only temporary. Electrolysis is another alternative to laser hair removal. Electrolysis hair removal applies an electric current to a fine needle inserted into a single hair follicle root. The electrical current heats the root of the hair to an extreme temperature, in effect burning it, and inhibiting it from producing any new hair. While electrolysis hair removal does offer permanent results, it is a slow, painful process that most often requires multiple sessions to completely destroy the hair follicles. Unlike electrolysis which destroys each hair root individually laser hair removal treatments are much more effective as it destroys many hair follicles at once. Because of this, areas can be treated with a laser in a fraction of the time needed for electrolysis. Smaller areas can be treated in 15 minutes allowing patients to return to work or normal activities immediately. Patients can now experience a convenient and effective permanent reduction of hair by a laser hair removal treatment and have satisfying results.
