The Oil Spill Conference is a chance for students to witness history in the making as it will put USF and the City of St. Petersburg at the center of a global stage. This is an exciting time for USF, a time for change, action, and an honest look at how we can truly change the future of the world. Students of all ages, majors, and backgrounds can benefit from joining this conference. Attendees can expect to gain new insight and perspective into how we can use the oil spill disaster to move towards a brighter future.

USF: A leader in the crisis
As a student at The University of South Florida, you are presented with a unique opportunity to see, first hand, how your school has, and will continue to play a key role in the BP oil spill disaster. Earlier this year USF made international headlines for its efforts regarding the BP Gulf oil spill. Over the span of 8 days over a dozen scientists and researchers from USF’s College of Marine Science, as well as Florida Fish and Wildlife Research Institute, went directly to the site to investigate how the spill was affecting life in the area surrounding the spill. Research by these scientists focused on marine life at all levels of the Gulf, from birds to dolphins and even plankton. They also took a pre-assessment of the area where oil was likely to travel to survey the life and conditions of the water before the slick moved through, in order to have a more realistic idea of how the oil would affect the water in this area after the impact of the oil set in. Fox News reported that the federal government is depending on the research being conducted by USF in order to gauge the true amount of damage that the spill has done. USF will continue its reputation as a leader in the oil spill crisis with this upcoming conference.
