No military attack on any nation not threatening us

ON THIS OKC FRIDAY EDITORIAL OPINION PAGE:
We urge courtesy in disagreement. We view with favor wise public choices and view with alarm flawed public choices. We give good advice to public officials at federal, state and local levels, and society in general, on what to do right. So, if they don't take our advice, it's not our fault.

More Education Funding
And get what we pay for!
E ENDORSE MORE MONEY for Education in Oklahoma. Our State Legislature has been lowering the funding appropriations recently, after having a long series of increases, with bad results. There is a current campaign by the professional segment of public education, and the teachers unions to get a lot more money into the state's various public education entities. That's good. We're for it! But that's only half the story. The other half of getting more money is guaranteed results. Could somebody figure out a way to tie appropriations this year to results of last year? If you do a lot better job, by testing results, in the previous year, you get an appropriation increase of the same percentage. And vice versa until you do better. We absolutely can not tolerate the present situation of our public school system that has resulted in a 50% drop out rate between the first grade and 12th grade. That drop out rate is a disgrace! One of the leaders of the new fund increase drive was quoted the other day as saying if we get more funding we can raise the pay to get better teachers. (He probably did not get love from

the unions for that comment, because that is a negative perception of some of their members. But his comment makes sense. Let's put more money in education and demand better results. Let's see if it works this time. We have not previously demanded results-or-else. Improving education, admittedly is not an easy task. Blaming non-cooperative parents is not an acceptable excuse. As we have repeated previously, a huge, huge percentage of students in urban centers come from illiterate, or worse, parents. Many times they are single parents, and several even homeless. We can't afford to continue sending their kids to a failure in life and a burden on society. Think of the child victims not getting taught to read. Folks, we simply have got stop our current status of passing the buck. We have to pay more to get more. If the state does not have the money, let's face it. If we have to have a tax increase to fund education, okay. But have to absolutely require better. much better, results. Save our schools. Save our poor kids!

Of course, if they become hostile toward us and are threatening action against us, we have a perfect right to defend ourselves. One of the reasons so many countries' people hate America is because they think we are trying to run their affairs. Even though they ask for, and accept, aid from America. Our relations are at the very lowest with several countries in the Mideast where there is a militant Muslim (not good Muslim) and AlQaeda campaign against America. Syria's civil war is a case in point, where both sides hate us and carry anti-American signs in their mob rallies. If we intercede there, we should not take sides. The terrible human killings there are horrible, but how can we align our country with one side or the other? It is the same in all the turmoil within more than one mideast country. History indicates our efforts in Iraq did not have any permanence. Now, they are a virtual subject of our worst enemy, Iran. So all the lost lives of hundreds of our young military service men and women did not cure Iraq's problem. But it did eliminate one of our worst enemy dictators. Jesus said, "Go ye into all the world and preach the Gospel unto every creature." (Mark 16:15). He did not say go into every country and threaten to blow them to hell with our military might if they don't do as we tell them to do. The overwhelming majority of American citizens flat do not want to get our country involved in a war with Syria --- a war that could wind up being another Iraq, if we start it with a bombing of their country. Peace with our current unfriendly countries around the world, yes Russia, should be our goal, not animosity. Can't we try harder?

FRIDAY loves you
A national initiative to raise awareness of the negative consequences of pornography began in Oklahoma City with a She's Somebody's Daughter Day proclamation by Gov. Mary Fallin and unveiling the first of seven billboards that will be displayed in the city. The billboards, a portion of which will be in Spanish, will be on display for three months or longer, depending on funding, according to state Rep. Sally Kern. The first billboard is on display at the intersection of Interstate 40 and Reno Avenue. Kern, an Oklahoma City lawmaker who authored legislation to address sex trafficking in Oklahoma, said she was excited to see the initiative start in the city. "They are taking a positive approach to dealing with a devastating problem that affects us in Oklahoma and throughout the nation," said Kern, R-Oklahoma City. "She's Somebody's Daughter is a movement by individuals who are committed to raising awareness about the role of pornography in driving the demand for sex trafficking and violence against women and children. I think it is a great opportunity to begin a discussion about pornography and sex trafficking." According to the organization, 67 percent of young men and 49 percent of young women say viewing pornography is an acceptable way to express one's sexuality. The organization will hold "Into the Light" concert at 7 p.m. Crossings Community Church on Oct. 5. The concert will feature the music of Clay Crosse, Scott Krippayne and John & Shelli Mandelville.
