PREfACE
We live in a very difficult and complicated world. The great values and standards of the past that brought us thus far are being challenged. Right is being called wrong and vice versa. The moral fiber of what we believe is on trial. It seems as though righteousness is losing a little more of its grasp every day. In this age, what is culturally acceptable is being determined by the largest, most influential or financially-backed group of people. In other words, in our society today, if you can get enough individuals on your side or have enough money and the right connections, you can actually determine what becomes law — what is culturally right or wrong, correct or incorrect, the truth or a lie.
“Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.” Romans 1:25

We are no longer governed by our conscience or even reason, but by the latest trend and inclination of our egocentric social order. In my opinion, this is a

11

THE OPEN DOOR POLICY

terrible way to manage and guide a civilization — it’s imprudent, foolhardy and downright reckless. Even with the difficulties of this present age, God always has a ram in the bush. The Lord continues to establish His certain Kingdom in the midst of an uncertain and misdirected world. God is looking for people that He can use and He will set an open door before those who respond to the call. This particular assemblage of individuals will be marked by character, spirituality, tenacity and the anointing of God. Matthew 7:20 says, “Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.” The door is open — ready or not, here we come!

12

fOREwORD
This book is written for those who are serious about the divine calling that they know is on their lives — those individuals who are concerned about fulfilling the prophetic assignment that they have been designated to accomplish. The Open Door represents the place of passage to start living out this mandate. Whether you are new to Christianity or have been working in ministry for the past twenty years, The Open Door Policy is designed to challenge you in areas where you don’t challenge yourself. This book is designed to aid you as you embrace your calling at new levels. It will introduce you to some ideas and concepts of spiritual maturity and character development, ultimately becoming a stepping stone that leads to greater fulfillment in your work and life in the Kingdom of God.

INTRODUCTION
“For if thou altogether holdest thy peace at this time, then shall there enlargement and deliverance arise to the Jews from another place; but thou and thy father’s house shall be destroyed: and who knoweth whether thou art come to the kingdom for such a time as this?” Esther 4:14

In this day and age, there is much teaching concerning purpose, destiny and divine providence. Books line the shelves of local retailers and become best-sellers as the general public thirsts for the keys to their future and the secrets to success. Amidst all the discussion and dialogue, elaborate promises and motivational techniques, there is little discussion of God’s plan for mankind. Since it is He who created us, it may be wise to check with Him concerning our future.
“Know ye that the LORD he is God: it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.” Psalm 100:3

If you want to find out why something is made and how it functions, the best place to start is with its manufacturer. God is our manufacturer! The Lord lets

15

THE OPEN DOOR POLICY

us know, clearly, that there are detailed designs and plans for our lives. He has well thought out desires for the calling that He has placed on each of us.
“For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.” Jeremiah 29:11

These blueprints of our lives take us through the doors and corridors that God has specifically directed. His plans speak to His overall purpose to establish the people of God while He advances the Kingdom. Consider the vernacular of this scripture in 2 Timothy.
“Who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began,” 2 Timothy 1:9

We are actually ambassadors for Christ working in foreign territory to represent and push God’s agenda.
“Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech you by us: we pray you in Christ’s stead, be ye reconciled to God.” 2 Corinthians 5:20

16

INTRODUCTION

As an ambassador for God, you have a very powerful and dynamic calling. According to the world’s standards concerning embassies, ambassadors have specified powers and authority to operate even though they are from a distant land. You are a Christian ambassador who has authority and an assignment that is very important! I honestly believe that God has begun to mobilize a group of individuals that will serve the Lord Jesus in a very unique and powerful way — unlike the world has ever seen. This group will have unique abilities to reach generations. Those who respond to the call for this assignment will be equipped with a special anointing to do a very powerful work in this very critical age. They will be equipped to serve God in specific ways through the gifts that God has given them. They will literally touch the world and not only be a blessing, but they will be blessed! The call on this group will be evident. They will do things that their backgrounds, experience, education and resumés will suggest they cannot do. They will be promoted in different venues and become stewards over many diverse areas of society. The mercy, grace and favor of God will operate in an extreme capacity,
17

THE OPEN DOOR POLICY

in their lives. These are the folks that have and will come through God’s Open Door. These are ordinary people with an extraordinary presence. In the following chapters, I will discuss not only the significance of the Open Door, but what it takes to go through it. If God set it open before you, He must intend for you to go through it. Your life will never be the same on the other side of the Open Door.

THE OPEN DOOR

“I know thy works: behold, I have set before thee an open door, and no man can shut it: for thou hast a little strength, and hast kept my word, and hast not denied my name.” Revelation 3:8

The Open Door is a threshold of transition to the next level for the believer. It represents new opportunities in God as well as His exponential favor. Most commentators agree that the open door in this passage of Revelation is a privileged access. It symbolizes an abundant opportunity that is quite different from typical Christian activity. The open door almost appears as a reward for those who stand firm in the faith. This portal of change is celebrated as a significant promotion for the child of God. It signifies God’s approval, divine access, dimensional participation and at least some degree of personal heavenly participation.
“And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus:” Ephesians 2:6

The Open Door represents positive transitional change for the believer — and it is, unequivocally, a place where God desires for you to pass through.
21

THE OPEN DOOR POLICY

So how do we pass through this Open Door? Part of the answer lies in the latter part of Revelation 3:8, where Jesus Christ states what appears to be His reason for even providing the door. The Christian He is describing had “little strength,” but still “…kept my word, and hast not denied my name.” Wow! Through struggle and overwhelming odds, they maintained their integrity with God. This is what gave them open door access! Another word for their actions is character. Character is what God is looking for at the next level. It is what qualifies you to pass through the Open Door. Since God has no respect of persons, anyone can achieve this designation.
“And if ye call on the Father, who without respect of persons judgeth according to every man’s work, pass the time of your sojourning here in fear:” 1 Peter 1:17

But the truth is, not everyone will experience this open door passage — just because of a lack of character. Gifts, talents, abilities and skills are great, but it’s only character that gets you through this spiritual door. Chances are you have seen these open door threshold crossers — individuals God blessed because of their character and integrity toward Him.
22

THE OPEN DOOR

They come from all walks of life — in all professions, with diverse gifts and talents. You may not notice them initially because of their unassuming demeanor. However, their presence will be evident as they quietly overcome incredible odds, hurdle huge obstacles and achieve with ease what many would not dare attempt. These individuals are not perfect or overnight successes. They are not immune to mistakes or setbacks. They are, however, persons that own up to their mistakes, face their fears and work through them. They are people of extreme character. Although they are dissimilar in background and personality, they all possess a commonality of inner strength and spirituality. Because of their secured trust in God, their faith walk is personified by risk-taking, intuitive decision-making, innovative thinking, compassionate leadership and incredibly sound judgment. They will ultimately be successful because their authority is managed by their humility. It is important again to emphasize that these threshold crossers received their access because of character
23

THE OPEN DOOR POLICY

— and that character is the oxygen for life beyond the door. Diligence and persistence are needed to put character in place.
“Wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure: for if ye do these things, ye shall never fall:” 2 Peter 1:10

Also, Jude 1:3 says that we, “…should earnestly contend for the faith…” Attaining godly character will require an interior overhaul through prayer, discipline and commitment. In the next chapter, we will begin to prepare you for the Open Door. Here is the Open Door Policy…

28

THE fOUNDATION Of PRAYER

“And I set my face unto the Lord God, to seek by prayer and supplications, with fasting, and sackcloth, and ashes:” Daniel 9:3

In order to qualify for passage through the Open Door, you must have a foundation of prayer. Those who are anointed and maintain a consistent godly character are perpetually sustained because of the undergirding of prayer. While others may choose to do other things with their time, Open Door personnel must take the time and even make the time to pray. Prayer is the link that helps us to discern the Will of God, which is so significantly needed at the next level. There are choices that you need to make, answers that you need to receive, instructions for what you need to do, and directions for where you need to go…and all these are accessed through the Holy Spirit in prayer.
“Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.” John 16:13

The enemy’s desire is that you get so caught up in the work of the Lord that you disconnect from the Lord
29

THE OPEN DOOR POLICY

of the work. Many pastors and high-level ministry workers in God’s Kingdom have fallen because their work activity was not supported by their prayer activity.
“Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.” Philippians 4:6

It is imperative to have your life continually on the altar before God in order to ensure that carnality and any type of demonic influence are dealt with swiftly. Satan is looking for a place to get in so he can tamper with your purpose and cause you to lose your anointing.
“Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:” 1 Peter 5:8

Prayer is a major factor in maintaining a high level of spirituality and serves as a deterrent for the tactical positioning of the enemy.
“Neither give place to the devil.” Ephesians 4:27

Prayer also is the potent agent that changes you to “fit” God and His plan for you. When you delve into
30

THE fOUNDATION Of PRAYER

the deeper realms of prayer, you become spiritually sensitive so that He can rapidly change what is required as well as show you where to walk.
“The steps of a good man are ordered by the LORD: and he delighteth in his way.” Psalm 37:23

Prayer allows spiritual counsel and correction in the internal before it is manifested in the external. Prayer will halt pride, jealousy, hatred, and other vices while you’re still on your knees! Oh, the power of prayer! Furthermore, it is necessary to have an effective prayer life at the Open Door level. Because of the level of things that you are praying about, you need the kind of prayers that get results. This is built over time through a sustained prayer relationship with God. He is not just the God that you talk to for a quick ten minutes in the morning — but the One that talks with you throughout the day.
“Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.” James 5:16

This particular scripture is one of my favorites, and I believe it epitomizes the kind of prayer that should
31

THE OPEN DOOR POLICY

come forth from Open Door individuals. It speaks as much about the person praying as it does about the prayer itself. It’s a righteous person — a person who has spiritually postured himself around the altar — who has his love and heart for the Lord displayed, backed up with the life he has lived in righteousness. He is a person of character who has a burning heartfelt prayer. How can God not allow this prayer to get results? If we want to get to Open Door levels, we must first do some real work around the throne of God! If we are going to see the move of God perpetually in our lives, then there is a certain posture that must be maintained.
“For they that sleep sleep in the night; and they that be drunken are drunken in the night.” 1 Thessalonians 5:7 “Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;” Ephesians 6:18

Spiritual maturity in prayer is vital for every person expecting passage through the Open Door. Prayer, your connection with God, is what everything spiritual

32

THE fOUNDATION Of PRAYER

is built upon. Great things are ahead, but the prayer foundation must be laid first.
“Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and show thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not.” Jeremiah 33:3

36

A LOvE fOR GOD

“And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment.” Mark 12:30

Leadership, service, operations and sound judgment at higher levels all require an extreme love for God. In the upper echelons, temptation is so very potent and potentially intoxicating, that love for God is essential to maintain equilibrium in the Christian soul. Once through the Open Door, a child of God’s responsibilities will increase immensely. This will yield more gates of opportunity for Satan to enter or carnality to set in. Your character will inevitably be challenged. Greater stewardship is wonderful for those who are prepared for it. If one is not prepared and continues to possess spiritual character flaws, these imperfections will, at some point, be flushed out during this new season. This will result in a devastating fall for the individual. Have you ever heard of top executives over large corporations who embezzled money? Most of them didn’t do it because they needed money — they did

37

THE OPEN DOOR POLICY

it because they could. The temptation was great and they had no power to resist. Most were decent individuals and loyal to the company, but they lost their balance in the face of fiscal enticement. As the children of God, we have power through our love for God. It keeps us from our natural inclination to sin, and is essential as we walk through the Open Door. Paul says in 2 Corinthians 5:14-15, “For the love of Christ constraineth us; because we thus judge, that if one died for all, then were all dead: And that he died for all, that they which live should not henceforth live unto themselves, but unto him which died for them, and rose again.” My love for God constantly reminds me that I am living for Him and further constrains me to never break the bonds or go beyond the boundaries of His love. Paul says that we should be like dead men concerning our carnal passions. If you offer a dead man a drink, he will not take it; a naked woman, he won’t be moved; or “under the table” money, he won’t reach for it… because he is a dead man.

38

A LOvE fOR GOD

Being submitted to God through love is imperative through the Open Door. James 4:7 says to “Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” A love for God is also necessary because the love actually becomes the conduit that connects the believer’s heart to God’s heart. Now notice that I have been saying our love for God. It is important to understand that our love for God has been the missing link in the equation for man’s success. God has never ceased to connect to us through His love.
“But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” Romans 5:8

However, we need to connect to Him because this connection is a key element in the circular model of relationship. These lines and channels of communication need to be strengthened upon passage through the Open Door. Why do you need this extreme love for God?

39

THE OPEN DOOR POLICY

You need a place where the care, comfort and security of God can perpetually breathe life into your heart, especially when you operate at high levels. The strength of your relationship with God becomes a barometer of your effectiveness and stability. As you increase your capacity to love God, your spiritual abilities are increased. This love is the rudimentary level of an individual’s praise and worship. We tend to think of worship as raising our hands and shedding tears — and it is, but it’s also much more. It is loving God so much that it increases the spiritual “bandwidth” of the flow from you to God and God to you. Through His love, God leaves an impartation of who He is in your heart and soul. This powerful transfer is needed for every Open Door Christian! Life really begins at the place where you fall in love with Jesus. Acceptance and obedience to His Will become second nature when you really fall in love with the Lord.
“For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous.” 1 John 5:3

40

A LOvE fOR GOD

Your love for God will allow you to flow with His spirit for God is love. You will operate on a higher spiritual plane as a result of your love for Him. Wisdom will flow quicker, discernment will be sharper and you will love and care for people better because you are sensitive to His heart and desires. Having a love for God is significant for every Open Door child of God.

THE SPIRIT Of HUmILITY

“Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time:” 1 Peter 5:6

If you are going to sincerely pass through the threshold of the Open Door into a new dimension for your life, you must possess a humble spirit. If you are expecting God to use you at high levels in ministry, humility is paramount. One of the most powerful elements in the Kingdom of God for mankind is the ability to yield to God. When you yield to God, you open up the capacity for God to fill you. In those surrendered vessels, He becomes great.
“Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.” 1 John 4:4

God can fill you with His wisdom, discernment, love and compassion, direction and instruction, revelation and insight as well as many other gifts. The more you empty out your vessel of selfcenteredness, pride, stubbornness, unforgiveness, deceitfulness, and the like, the more room God can fill with His love and purpose.
45

THE OPEN DOOR POLICY

Note that this is something you must do — it’s a character issue. You must take responsibility to ensure that humility is in place in your life. It must be practiced, practiced and practiced again until it becomes a part of your spirit. Humbling yourself means placing every care, problem, situation and circumstance into God’s hands. It’s owning up to when you’re wrong, repenting for every sin and accepting correction when you are out of order. It allows God to have His perfect work. This is vitally important at Open Door levels. Those who can’t repent can never move on from their last sin, infraction or mishap. Repentance is probably of as great a value for mature Christians as it is for newborn babes in Christ.
“Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord,” Acts 3:19

The spirit of humility is one of the greatest tools to combat pride and stubbornness — major stumbling blocks at high levels. Pride, along with stubbornness, has caused many in the Kingdom of God to fall.

46

THE SPIRIT Of HUmILITY

Pride is a silent killer — like carbon monoxide, it slips in when you least expect it. It is a sleeping giant that lives in the dark corners of the flesh — waiting to terrorize the spiritual system of the believer. Even prideful people with good intentions cannot hold back pride’s handiwork when exposed to elevated and complex situations. This character flaw will cause individuals to become self-centered, self-serving, stubborn, lustful, conceited and blind, just to name a few. It is interesting that humility takes you up while pride takes you down.1
“Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall.” Proverbs 16:18

NOTES ON HUmILITY
If you search the local bookstores and libraries, you won’t find much written about humility. Even the most popular self-help guides and leadership journals seldom touch on the subject matter. By world standards, humility probably won’t make the top ten list of great character traits. It certainly has been given a bad rap or at least been overlooked.

47

THE OPEN DOOR POLICY

One reason may be because of its non-aggressive quality or its associated connection with surrendering control. I heard it mentioned that “meekness is weakness,” but I can assure you that this is not the case. Humility has always been a powerful attribute for great leaders and individuals from all walks of life. It has been displayed through the ages — from Jesus to Abraham Lincoln, including many other biblical examples such as David, Daniel, Esther and Paul. Furthermore, God lifts this particular trait with high value. Remember, 1 Peter 5:6 says, “Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time:” The Lord gives us insight, with this scripture and several others throughout the Bible, on His regard for this anointed character trait of humility. Even God’s Son, Jesus Christ, our ultimate example, humbled Himself to the point of death. This humility was the spiritual preparation for Christ’s resurrection. Remember, humility sets you up for exaltation.

48

THE SPIRIT Of HUmILITY

When you really “die to the flesh,” you are getting in a position to be used by God. A spirit of servanthood and meekness places you in a posture to be a manager over greater things. Humility affords more capacity to handle power. Jesus, the prime example of humility, rose with “all power” in His hands (Matthew 28:18). He’s the prime example of humility. God can trust you with power because it is not likely to go to your head.
“Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves. Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others. Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:” Philippians 2:3-5

A LIfE Of INTEGRITY

“Behold, thou desirest truth in the inward parts: and in the hidden part thou shalt make me to know wisdom. Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean: wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.” Psalm 51:6-7

Some time ago I heard a story about a janitor who was cleaning the National Cathedral. He was very conscientious and dedicated to his tasks and often put in unpaid overtime just to ensure that every area was covered. One day, one of the managers was walking through the Cathedral and noticed the janitor on the floor, kind of twisted around one of the sharp corners of a very narrowly angled wall. He was scrubbing, almost feverishly, in a very dark and constricted space. The manager asked, “Why are you cleaning back in that area — nobody can see what’s back there.” The janitor replied, “God sees.” This is integrity before God. I sincerely believe that an individual’s elevation in God has a direct correlation to his or her personal spiritual resolve. Integrity is unequivocally imperative to be Open Door qualified. The word “integrity” comes from the same root word that is found in the mathematical term “integer.”
55

THE OPEN DOOR POLICY

Integer is defined as “being whole and unified,” “to be complete and open.” It means to be “undivided without duplicity or pretense” or “consistent.” In other words, a person of integrity must have an “integer” quality. God needs to be able to count on people even when the going gets tough. At higher levels, there will be questions of truths that will confront your very spirit. There will be things that affect you personally. The man or woman of God must stand firm, even at the risk of personal loss.
“I know also, my God, that thou triest the heart, and hast pleasure in uprightness. As for me, in the uprightness of mine heart I have willingly offered all these things: and now have I seen with joy thy people, which are present here, to offer willingly unto thee.” 1 Chronicles 29:17

Spiritual wholeness is what many individuals lack. The wholeness issue is normally not a concern within the confines and comforts of an uncontested life. But as God requires more of you, integrity becomes a chief issue. Satan attacks fiercely when you gain greater responsibility, which leads to an all-out war with your flesh. Paul decribes the epic battle within himself in Romans Chapter 7:

56

A LIfE Of INTEGRITY

“Now if I do that I would not, it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me. I find then a law, that, when I would do good, evil is present with me. For I delight in the law of God after the inward man: But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members. O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death? I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin.” Romans 7:20-25

To manage and not touch the money in the midst of a financial crisis; to tell the truth and not lie, at the risk of personal loss or reputation; to do the right thing, even when everyone else is “getting by” with doing something else; to take the “high road” in spite of an unscrupulous environment; to do right when nobody is looking — that’s integrity. Integrity says “God sees.” It is when your spiritual character speaks up within you and says “I’m really not doing this for man…I’m doing this for God.” Integrity is a character trait that is developed through experience. While walking in truth over time, your word is being established. When you say something, hearers and observers gauge how far your word goes.
57

THE OPEN DOOR POLICY

A person of integrity strives to keep that word even if it is not convenient or seems to go unnoticed. Integrity speaks to the care and concern about making commitments. A person of integrity has private and public standards that are the same everywhere and at all times. This characteristic in seen in Job Chapter 1. Here Job has just suffered incredible personal loss, but pay attention to his reaction:
“Then Job arose, and rent his mantle, and shaved his head, and fell down upon the ground, and worshipped, And said, Naked came I out of my mother’s womb, and naked shall I return thither: the LORD gave, and the LORD hath taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD. In all this, Job sinned not, nor charged God foolishly.” Job 1:20-22

In spite of the pain and anguish of his present moment — losing family members, business losses and property destruction, his reaction was spiritual. This reaction was something that was “built” into him on a daily basis. He became righteous by doing things right over an extended period of time. Job gained a reputation for being “perfect and upright.” Because of his level of integrity, he was able
58

A LIfE Of INTEGRITY

to stand strong during the time of the storm. Here is God’s response in Job Chapter 2.
“…Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil? and still he holdeth fast his integrity, although thou movedst me against him, to destroy him without cause.” Job 2:3

Wow! Wouldn’t it be great if God could testify about you like that? God is certainly looking for that type of individual.

THE INTEGRITY CHALLENGE
Today’s world presents some very unique challenges. As the standards, over time, have been downgraded, what is right has become what you can get away with rather than what is honest. One of the main reasons for integrity failure in this age is the fact that truth is no longer the basis for actions. Years ago, parents were quite adamant about instilling the principles of candor and truthfulness. If a child stole a candy bar from the grocery store — upon detection, the parent would march the child right back into the store and make them, not
59

THE OPEN DOOR POLICY

only give back the candy, but apologize to the store manager for taking it. This flavor of truth permeated throughout society. Now, we have something called “situational ethics.” This teaching basically says that there are no absolute laws and that the situations that you face daily must be judged accordingly. What is right and what is wrong may change according to the complexity of the situation. In other words, it may be alright for a man to steal a loaf of bread from the store if he was trying to feed his starving family. Situational ethics presents, logically, that there are many loaves of bread in the store and some will invariably be thrown away at the end of the day...so, what is so wrong about stealing when it actually helps people? Now, don’t get me wrong, I do have compassion on that man and his family. However, stealing is still unlawful. There is no right way to do a wrong thing. This stripping of our moral fiber has resulted in more and more lawlessness and an emergent inability among people to judge what is right in particular situations.
60

A LIfE Of INTEGRITY

I believe that through the Open Door, God is calling forth people who will be examples of character for a spiritually dying world. This is the time for believers to get out in front and lead the way. We need to stop trying to rationalize bad behavior and blaming all of our actions on our background and personality types — and just do right. Christians need to demonstrate how to honor God with the life that we live. I believe the Lord is calling forth Open Door residents who will maintain godly standards, clearly draw the line and not compromise no matter what the personal cost may be. Integrity pleases God and He blesses those with an upright heart. It secures and preserves the upright man or woman in their daily walk.
“He that walketh uprightly walketh surely: but he that perverteth his ways shall be known.” Proverbs10:9 “For the LORD God is a sun and shield: the LORD will give grace and glory: no good thing will he withhold from them that walk uprightly.” Psalm 84:11

AN ELEmENT Of SACRIfICE

“I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.” Romans 12:1-2

A powerful quality that every Open Door believer must possess is the spirit of giving. Whenever we mention giving, most of us are accustomed to thinking about money. That is certainly part of it — but it is so much more than that. The giving that is taught throughout the Bible is an element that comes out of the spiritual sphere. It has many manifestations, including supporting financially, but it is mainly characterized by an insatiable desire to see God’s Will be done. It is an overwhelming eagerness to espouse and comply until the manifestation of what God wants comes to pass.
“Yea, in the way of thy judgments, O LORD, have we waited for thee; the desire of our soul is to thy name, and to the remembrance of thee.” Isaiah 26:8

67

THE OPEN DOOR POLICY

“Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ.” 1 Peter 2:5

In order to get into a sacrificial posture, there must be a life of worship. As mentioned in an earlier chapter, this worship is an internal connection to God that is always in operation. It is the inner man’s overcoming spiritual disposition that is able to triumph over the resident selfishness and fleshly proclivities. What is on the inside will eventually be manifested on the outside. This is where the believer becomes broken before the Lord. This is where he or she gains a prevailing sensitivity towards God that makes them become a giver — a doer of the Will of God.
“The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.” Psalm 51:17 “For thus saith the high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity, whose name is Holy; I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones.” Isaiah 57:15

68

AN ELEmENT Of SACRIfICE

Out of this place comes the element of sacrifice that distinguishes an individual as a person of character. This person becomes an innate giver. They really don’t need to be prompted to give — it is a part of who they are. They give their time, their efforts, their ideas, their finances, and their love — well, they give their very life for His Will to come to pass. They are totally submerged in doing for God — “sold out” to the advancing of the Kingdom of God. These individuals have hooked into the principle that Jesus Christ talked about in Matthew Chapter 16.
“Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me. For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it.” Matthew 16:24-25

Open Door personnel, ultimately, find their lives because they have lost them in worship to God. Not just in the worship service at the church, but in their everyday lives.

69

THE OPEN DOOR POLICY

THE mANNER Of GIvING
All Christian giving is supposed to be from the heart. The motive of love and support for the Kingdom, and not the yearning for rewards, should be the driving force behind spiritual giving. There should be an abiding sincerity as we sacrificially render our gifts to the Lord. The idea of getting something in return or the attitude of “What’s in it for me?” should not be present when we give. A lot of the popular teaching today is “me” focused. Don’t misunderstand me — I wholeheartedly believe that God does reward those who give. However, I believe that the attitude you have while rendering your sacrifices is powerfully important. In fact, the attitude and disposition that a person has while giving, is what makes it worship. If I gave my daughter twenty dollars and gave twenty dollars during offering — what would be the difference? The twenty dollar bill does not determine what activity is performed. The difference is found in the motive, purpose, motivation and inspiration of the giver. The attitude attached to my gifts determines whether or not it’s worship.

70

AN ELEmENT Of SACRIfICE

The scriptures are very certain about the rewards of giving. Luke 6:38 says, “Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again.” The fact that believers are not to give for ulterior motives doesn’t mean that there are no rewards available! While the basic motive for giving shouldn’t be rewards, there are rewards nonetheless for faithful Christian giving. As we come to God, we must ensure that, we not only have the the right kind of gift, but that we are the right kind of giver. Let’s present ourselves in worship as a “living sacrifice.”
“But this I say, He which soweth sparingly shall reap also sparingly; and he which soweth bountifully shall reap also bountifully. Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver.” 2 Corinthians 9:6-7

GOD PLEASING fAITH

“But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.” Hebrews 11:6

Faith is what pleases God. As we prepare to walk through the Open Door and serve the Lord at a higher level, just understand that everything done for God must have an element of faith to count spiritually. This scripture in Hebrews Chapter 11 says that “without faith it is impossible to please God.” Note here that the text clearly says it is “impossible.” It does not leave any room for doubt. Pleasing God is going to take some faith. So what is faith? Faith is doing something that you can’t do — and believing God for only something He can do. Along with the other ways we serve and seek to please the Lord, we must always ensure that faith is a part of our efforts. Recently, I was teaching a class, and I asked the question, “if it takes faith to please God, and faith is something that you cannot do and only God can do — how often do we really please God?“

77

THE OPEN DOOR POLICY

We don’t need God’s help to cook breakfast, go to work, drive home or go to church service. So when is it, during our normal routine, that we please God? It’s something to think about. Could we have gone a week without pleasing God? How about a month or a whole year? If we stay in our mundane routine of everyday life, we may not be pleasing God. We need to consciously push ourselves “out on a limb” in life — like Zacchaeus in Luke Chapter 19.
“And he sought to see Jesus who he was; and could not for the press, because he was little of stature. And he ran before, and climbed up into a sycomore tree to see him: for he was to pass that way. And when Jesus came to the place, he looked up, and saw him, and said unto him, Zacchaeus, make haste, and come down; for today I must abide at thy house. And he made haste, and came down, and received him joyfully.” Luke 19:3-6

Life is more exciting when you go out on a limb. You will see more of Jesus when you put yourself in a position of “spiritual risk.” I live my life in a constant state of risk and uncertainty. Not just because of the perils of life, but because I put myself there. I want to

78

GOD PLEASING fAITH

be in a place, at all times, where I have the opportunity to please God. One of the key components of the Open Door life is faith. Comfort and convenience have their place, but it’s my opinion that life is not worth living without some challenges. I need a place to work my faith! A vacation becomes unemployment without a job.
“Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone. Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: show me thy faith without thy works, and I will show thee my faith by my works. Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble. But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead?” James 2:17-20

It is also important to understand that this “faith walk” should really become a lifestyle rather than something you do on occasion. Many Christians wait around for opportunities to come along before they believe God. If this is your pattern, you will not see very many things come your way. And remember, it is faith that pleases God — so you’re doing at least two things wrong — hindering your life’s productivity, as well as making the Lord very unhappy.
79

THE OPEN DOOR POLICY

“For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith.” Romans 1:17

When the Bible talks about the “just,” it is talking about a specific group of people — those who have submitted and entrusted their lives to the Lord. This is not to say that they have dotted every “i” or crossed every “t,” but what it does mean is that they have given their lives to the Lord. Another translation of the just is “declared righteous.” For these who have been “declared righteous,” it is important that they be guided by God through His Word. This becomes what many call our “faith walk.” Psalm 37:23 says, “The steps of a good man are ordered by the LORD: and he delighteth in his way.” Another Psalm states:
“Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.” Psalm119:105

As we trust God’s Word, this alone will push you out of your comfort zone. The Word of God, along with operations of the Holy Spirit, will guide you into a posture where you’re doing things that you have never done before.
80

GOD PLEASING fAITH

You will buy a house even though you have always rented. You will find yourself going to college when you thought you were not “college material.” You will trust God for healing or believe God in some other situation requiring faith. The Word of God, through faith, will guide you there.
“And Jesus looking upon them saith, With men it is impossible, but not with God: for with God all things are possible.” Mark 10:27

A TRAINAbLE SPIRIT

“Obey them that have the rule over you, and submit yourselves: for they watch for your souls, as they that must give account, that they may do it with joy, and not with grief: for that is unprofitable for you.” Hebrews 13:17

Whenever I hire a new employee, I try to scrutinize at least three things — their current skill level, their ability to work with others and their potential to work at the next level. Having talents, skills and abilities is a start, but it’s not enough. Being trainable is definitely a key factor for employment. I am a firm believer that this is equally important for the Kingdom of God. If you are expecting to go through the Open Door and be effectively used for the Kingdom, then it is necessary for you to have a trainable spirit. I have discovered that many people think they are trainable, when in fact they are not. If you are overly opinionated and have a strong personality, that becomes your “signature.” You may then have a difficult time actually hearing instruction. There are also some individuals who see themselves as humble, laid-back and more on the quiet side — and in normal day-to-day operations this presents no problems. In reality, they will give you a quiet
85

THE OPEN DOOR POLICY

resistance and subtle defiance that is sometimes worse than the extroverted individual — at least you know where they’re coming from. Not everyone is trainable in their current state. Training requires breaking through old mindsets, overthrowing established patterns and employing periodic shifts of a person’s spiritual paradigm. God needs individuals who are yielded enough to hear His voice, compliant enough to obey His leaders and flexible enough to learn what is needed. This is a tall order and, for some, it may require a personal revolution. If you are not able to be broken, you are not able to be used by God at higher levels. God reminds us that:
“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.” Isaiah 55:8-9

If you are unable to flow with the move of God, because you are stuck in your ways — stubborn, stingy, prideful or insensitive — then you have really disqualified yourself from being used at a greater capacity by God. The Word of God comes to help those who want to be helped. It is designed to chisel us out
86

A TRAINAbLE SPIRIT

and transform us into the image of Christ. Jeremiah 23:29 says the Word of God is like a hammer that breaks the rock “into pieces.”
“All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:” 2 Timothy 3:16

Also Proverbs 3:5-6 tells us to “Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.” When your “understanding” is in the way of His Will then not much of a flow can take place. However, someone who is yielded to God will gladly respond to His Word so that he or she can get in line with His next move. This is why your spirit needs to be trainable. When the Word comes, there can be immediate change.
“For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.” Hebrews 4:12

To be trainable you must be adaptable to the Word of God.

A CALLING bEYOND

“But when he saw the multitudes, he was moved with compassion on them, because they fainted, and were scattered abroad, as sheep having no shepherd.” Matthew 9:36

There is a higher purpose designated for those who desire to go through the Open Door. There is a calling on your life, and this divine call is not just so that you can fulfill your own dreams and aspirations — the calling is so that God’s Will can ultimately come to pass. The Lord will, in the process, bless His children. The scripture states:
“Delight thyself also in the LORD; and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart.” Psalm 37:4

However, His objectives are the priority. There is an agenda that God has for this world and present age. We, as people of God, need to work intensely to ensure that we are well-occupied with it and that we fulfill as much of it as we can. The Kingdom mandate deals with the “big picture.” It is so easy for us to get caught up in our little corner of the world. All we can think about is our children, our house, our bills, our next promotion and our vacation. We can get so saturated with our problems, issues,
93

THE OPEN DOOR POLICY

and goals that we will never think about anyone else’s. Our Lord Jesus Christ teaches a parable in Matthew Chapter 25 reminding us that our spiritual responsibility also carries a social mandate. The King tells his subject that he was directly affected because of the ministry that he did or did not perform:
“For I was an hungred, and ye gave me no meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me no drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me not in: naked, and ye clothed me not: sick, and in prison, and ye visited me not. Then shall they also answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, or athirst, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not minister unto thee? Then shall he answer them, saying, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye did it not to one of the least of these, ye did it not to me.” Matthew 25:42-45

There are reasons why God has strategically placed us here at this particular time. There is a very present work in front of us. I honestly believe that we, the people of God, are stewards of the precious principles of the Word of God. I don’t believe that we should just memorize them so we can quote them, but that we should live them to the fullest extent possible.

94

A CALLING bEYOND

I believe that we are called to the greater masses. To just take care of yourself and family would be to miss a great portion of your calling. You are called to your church, your community, your nation and the world.
“Be not thou therefore ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me his prisoner: but be thou partaker of the afflictions of the gospel according to the power of God; Who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began…” 2 Timothy 1:8-9

This holy calling is essentially about God’s desire to fulfill “…his own purpose…” through ministering and reaching the lost souls of humankind. This calling designates His people as tools to bring this to pass. In Matthew Chapter 5, Jesus Christ describes the people of God as the “salt of the earth,” the “light of the world” and a “city that is set on an hill — that cannot be hid.” I believe the Lord was reminding us that although we are not “of this world” we are still in this world to provide leadership in a spiritual and moral sense. In other words, we have a responsibility to lift up the standards of God.

95

THE OPEN DOOR POLICY

Affordable housing for the poor, prison reform, equal education, censorship on television, and protecting the sanctity of marriage between a man and a woman are all examples of issues that Christians need to weigh in on. Furthermore, we must be acutely aware of the constant stream of proposed laws being pushed through every level of government that go against what we believe as Christians. No one else is going to stop the tide of immorality and potential infraction in our societal system. Christians must go through this Open Door and be counted! We are called to establish the presence of God and protect the principles of God. We are partakers with Christ in the mandate (1 Peter 4:13). We are part of the Lord Jesus’ called…anointed to reach the world…
“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, To preach the acceptable year of the Lord.” Luke 4:18-19

A GREAT DETERmINATION

“Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 3:13-14

There were many times in my life when I felt like giving up — honestly, most of us have felt like that. In spite of this feeling, many have gone on to achieve great things. Determination is an Open Door quality that should be in place for every believer. This is very important because God uses those who are determined. If you examine the people who were “called” in the Bible, they were all doing something when they were called. Those who want to be used by God must put their faith in action and keep going. You must make up your mind to “press” toward the mark concerning your “higher calling.” I believe that we have a natural call and a spiritual call. Most people will live out their natural call (father, mother, supervisor, friend, etc.), however, they will still feel empty. This is because they have not even attempted to satisfy their spiritual call. They will walk around frustrated — knowing that something is missing.

103

THE OPEN DOOR POLICY

Fulfilling this spiritual call will require some effort. Natural activities will still be in operation, so you must have great determination. You cannot be lazy, lethargic or indolent and expect the blessing to come your way. You can’t be sedentary and a procrastinator and expect to move through the Open Door. It just won’t happen. Also, you will need determination because the enemy is not going to let you participate in a high level of anointed service without a confrontation. Whenever you start doing anything for Christ to build the Kingdom of God — understand that Satan will not be far behind.
“Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:” 1Peter 5:8

There will be a fight...but you must fight to trust God while God fights your battle. We don’t fight a physical fight — ours is spiritual.
“For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.” Ephesians 6:12

104

A GREAT DETERmINATION

Our fight is a fight of determination — a fight to remain right in God. Paul said that we must “fight the good fight of faith” (1 Timothy 6:12). And while we hold down our end — God is fighting our battles!
“…Be not afraid nor dismayed by reason of this great multitude; for the battle is not yours, but God’s.” 2 Chronicles 20:15

AN ATTITUDE Of GRATITUDE

“And one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, and with a loud voice glorified God, And fell down on his face at his feet, giving him thanks: and he was a Samaritan. And Jesus answering said, Were there not ten cleansed? but where are the nine? There are not found that returned to give glory to God, save this stranger. And he said unto him, Arise, go thy way: thy faith hath made thee whole.” Luke 17:15-19

Dialoguing and working with community leaders, students and officials at Virginia Tech University in Blacksburg, Virginia, just after the tragic shootings occurred, reminded me of how precious life is. On April 16th, 2007, thirty-three individuals lost their lives, and the magnitude of this loss was immeasurable. The lives of family members, fellow students, faculty and community members were altered forever. Recovery and healing will take some time. It reminds me not to take the people, opportunities, and even moments that I presently enjoy for granted. As a Christian, I am incredibly grateful for the life that God has granted me through His Son, Jesus Christ. I honestly believe that had my life not changed when it did, I would be on drugs, in prison or dead by now. That was the path that I was headed down. So life, to me, is a wonderful gift. James 4:14 says “Whereas
109

THE OPEN DOOR POLICY

ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away.” I guess I feel like the one leper who came back to thank Jesus for his healing. What an incredible Open Door many of us have already come through! We certainly have been able to effectively “escape the snare of the fowler!” (Psalm 91:3) Even what we are living now represents new life.
“If it had not been the LORD who was on our side, now may Israel say; If it had not been the LORD who was on our side…” Psalm 124:1-2

I will thank the Lord every chance that I am given. This should be the mark of a “called out” believer — never too proud to testify concerning what the Lord has done in their life. So I pledge to celebrate life, but to be satisfied with it — well, that’s another story. Satisfaction is a word that is a bit too final for me…I prefer to say “I’m working toward it.” For me, “satisfied” is a word I use after a good meal — it fulfills me for the moment, but I understand that I will still be hungry tomorrow.

110

AN ATTITUDE Of GRATITUDE

I’m glad that my life has been able to be used as a tool in ministry for the service of mankind. However, my tomorrows make me hungry. As long as there are abused and exploited children, I’m still hungry. As long as there are individuals who continue to live under the bondage of alcohol and controlled substances, I’m still hungry. As long as the poor and middle-class go underrepresented, I’m still hungry. As long as pornography and profanity continue to pollute our airways, I’ll still be hungry. There is so much more on life’s menu that provokes my appetite for service. But as I think about it, my hunger for tomorrow may just be what motivates me. My tomorrows fuel my hope for opportunities of change. Each encounter opens the door to new life. In every experience, good or bad, my personal disposition is strengthened and I am able to discern and embrace another side of God. I have an insatiable hunger to live. I guess to that end I’m thankful, but still not totally satisfied.

fINAL NOTES

AN OPEN AND LISTENING SPIRIT
“He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the tree of life, which is in the midst of the paradise of God.” Revelation 2:7

An Open Door requires an open ear. As we seek to serve God at higher levels, it is important to remain open to Him. God is a communicating Counselor and as long as we continue to be sensitive to His Spirit — He will guide us successfully. I have found out that the Lord continually seeks to guide us. This is the reason why the Bible puts so much
115

THE OPEN DOOR POLICY

emphasis on prayer. There are over 650 scriptures in the Bible that reference prayer! Prayer has no other purpose but to serve as communication with God. God wants to perpetually convey at least two things to us: direction and instruction. Direction tells you where to go and instruction tells you what to do — and let’s face it, we really need His guidance to be successful.
“But he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved.” Matthew 24:13 “Wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure: for if ye do these things, ye shall never fall:” 2 Peter 1:10

CERTIfIED POwER fOR THE NExT LEvEL
In each of the following scriptures, it is very clear that God wants to empower His people…but if we read the context of each of the “release” scriptures, we can emphatically surmise that the prerequisite for the power is righteousness or right living. Not that we deserve any benefits from God — but through our efforts to keep His commandments, God qualifies and certifies us with power and victory.

fINAL NOTES

“Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you.” Luke 10:19 “And he that overcometh, and keepeth my works unto the end, to him will I give power over the nations:” Revelation 2:26 “But thou shalt remember the LORD thy God: for it is he that giveth thee power to get wealth, that he may establish his covenant which he sware unto thy fathers, as it is this day.” Deuteronomy 8:18 “O God, thou art terrible out of thy holy places: the God of Israel is he that giveth strength and power unto his people. Blessed be God.” Psalm 68:35 “He giveth power to the faint; and to them that have no might he increaseth strength.” Isaiah 40:29 “But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.” Acts 1:8 “Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that ye may abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Ghost.” Romans 15:13
