CENTURYLINK FIELD, SEATTLE

SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 3 • 7:30 P.M.

THIS WEEK: No. 7 AP & BCS/No. 9 USA Today Oregon State (6-0, 4-0 in Pac-12) travels to Seattle this weekend to face the Washington Huskies (3-4, 1-3). The game will kickoff at 7:22 p.m. PDT from CenturyLink Field, the home of the Seattle Seahawks/Sounders. The game airs on the Pac-12 Networks. THE SERIES: The series dates back to 1897 when Oregon State won a 16-0 decision at home. Overall Washington has the advantage 58-34-4 thanks mainly to a 25-2 run between 1975 and 2003. OSU had a six-game win streak snapped in a 35-34 double overtime loss at Husky Stadium in 2010, but won last season at Reser Stadium 38-21 behind Sean Mannion’s 339 yards passing and two touchdown passes. Markus Wheaton caught seven passes for 125 yards and Jovan Stevenson, then a running back now a cornerback, rushed for three touchdowns. OSU held a 484-315 advantage in total yards. James Rodgers became OSU’s all-time leader for receptions in the game passing Mike Hass (2002-2005) with 222 receptions. UNDEFEATED AT THE “CLINK”: Oregon State beat Washington State last year at CenturyLink Field 44-21 on Oct. 22, 2011. Sean Mannion passed for a then career-high 376 yards and four touchdowns in front of 49,219 fans. Malcolm Agnew rushed for 103 yards and Markus Wheaton made five receptions for 99 yards. THE RANKINGS: The Beavers appear in the Associated Press top-25 rankings for the fifth consecutive week. The No. 7 ranking is the highest for the Beavers since ending 2000 at No. 4 after defeating Notre Dame in the Fiesta Bowl and capping an 11-1 season. A win Saturday would keep OSU in the top 25 for six consecutive weeks for the first time since that 2000 season. 1907: The last time OSU started the season 6-0 was 1907 when it won the Coast title that included victories over Astoria (Oregon Coast), Whitworth (Washington small college), Pacific (Oregon, not California), Oregon, Willamette (small college school in Salem, Ore.) and St. Vincent College (now Loyola Marymount) of Los Angeles in the Coast title game – it was the first time a team from the Oregon Agricultural College, as it was known then, had traveled outside of the Pacific Northwest. At no time in history has the football program at Oregon State been 7-0. If the Beavers prevail Saturday night it would be the first seven-game win streak since 2000 that included the Fiesta Bowl win over Notre Dame.

STILL STANDING: Oregon State is one of 11 Football Bowl Subdivision teams that remain undefeated, and per Jeff Sagarin of the USA Today the Beavers have had the second-toughest route to keep a zero in the loss column. The Sagarin rankings schedule strength for the unbeaten has Florida at No. 10 followed by Oregon State (15), Notre Dame (20), Alabama (26), Kansas State (45), Oregon (58), Ohio State (59), Rutgers (98), Louisville (105), Mississippi State (119) and Ohio (173). BOWL ELIGIBILITY: Oregon State, Oregon and USC are bowl eligible from the Pac-12 Conference. For the Beavers it’s the earliest time in school history. Courtesy of John Hunt of The Oregonian – “No team in the Pac-8/Pac-10/Pac-12 has had a record as bad as OSU did (3-9) and played in a bowl the following year.”

PAC-12 4-0: The last time OSU won its first four conference games of the season was 1968, the first year of the Pac-8 Conference, opening the league slate at 4-0. Oregon State has never been 5-0 in any league standings in history. RILEY GETS RECORD: Beaver head coach Mike Riley became the school’s all-time leader for football victories when he notched his 75th (now 78) Sept. 29 at Arizona, passing Lon Stiner (1933-48). The 12thyear head coach has 51 league victories (the most by an active coach), tied for 14th in the Pac-12 record book with former Husky head man James Phelan (1930-41). For more on Riley see his bio on page 4 in this week’s game notes. SINGLE DIGITS: Oregon State has allowed nine or fewer points in three games this season, the most since achieving the same defensive feat in 2008 (Hawai’i, UCLA, Pitt). The last time a Beaver defense gave up nine or fewer points in more than three games was that 2000 Fiesta Bowl Season (San Diego State, Stanford, WSU, Arizona, Notre Dame). The last time the Huskies didn’t reach double figures vs. OSU was 1974, a 23-9 Beaver victory in Corvallis. The Beavers’ three games of allowing nine or fewer points ranks tied for third in all of the FBS following the four games by BYU and Florida State (2 vs. FCS teams). 38.5: The average number of points for Oregon State against Washington the last four games; three victories. In those four games the Beaver offense has averaged 407.5 yards, including 484 yards last season. RUSH DEFENSE: Oregon State enters the week fifth in the nation and second in the Pac-12 for rush defense, allowing 80.8 yards per game. Only Alabama (58.7 yds), Florida State (69.1), Rutgers (69.1) and Stanford (77.0) rank higher in the country. In 2007, under the guidance of current defensive coordinator Mark Banker, OSU led the nation for the season for rush defense surrendering 70.6 yards per game. The Beavers run defense has been strongest in years they play multiple linemen – this year 10 have played to this point. THIRD AND LONG: OSU enters Saturday’s game leading the Pac-12 and is third in the nation for third-down percentage defense, allowing 25.3 percent (21-83). Florida State (23.2) and Alabama (25.0) are the only two teams that fare better on defense on third down. Last season the Beavers ranked 104th for third down defense, allowing 47.4 percent. The Beaver defense is forcing an average of four three-and-outs per game. 6: As in the number of points the Beavers have allowed in the fourth quarter of the last three games combined. OSU has gone the last 50:34 of fourth quarters without surrendering a touchdown. The last three opponents have converted just 2 of 10 third down attempts in the final period.

7: As in first quarter points allowed by the Beavers this season, the fewest in the Pac-12 Conference. Stanford has allowed 13, followed by Oregon (26), Arizona (30), USC (31), Arizona State (32), UCLA (37), Cal (58), Washington (58), WSU (58), Utah (62) and Colorado (65). TAKE THE LONG WAY HOME: Oregon State enters Saturday having put together scoring drives of 74-plus yards 16 times through the first six games, including eight of 80-plus yards. All of last season, the Beavers achieved scoring drives of 70-plus 13 times. Those long drives in combination with OSU’s third down defense has allowed the Beavers to rank tied for seventh in the nation and first in the Pac-12 for average time of possession at 33.24. INTERCEPTION: Oregon State has 12 interceptions for the season (11 last season), nine in the last three games, to rank tied for ninth in the country. CB Jordan Poyer has five of those 12 to rank tied for second in the NCAA per game with .83 and second for overall behind the 7 of Fresno State’s Phillip Thomas. Poyer now ranks tied for ninth for career interceptions at OSU with 11. He was the Walter Camp Co-Player of the Week and the Jim Thorpe (nation’s top CB) Player of the Week for Oct. 8 after his three interceptions against Washington State.

LOCKDOWN CORNERS: Part of Oregon State’s defensive strategy is based on its ability to put starting cornerbacks Jordan Poyer and Rashaad Reynolds in man-to-man coverage. The duo has responded with being among the national leaders for passes defended (breakups & interceptions). Reynolds ranks tied for second in the nation averaging 2.2 passes defended per game while Poyer is tied for 14th at 1.4. ROAD TEAM: Statistically speaking, the Beavers have been somewhat of an anomaly in home vs. road games. Here is a closer look: Road (3 gms) Home (3 gms) Diff. The other is the upstart sophomore Brandin Cooks. Together they form one of the most dangerous receiving duos in the nation. Cooks is ninth in the nation with 111.3 yards receiving per contest while Wheaton is 10th at 109.0 – only West Virginia can match the Beavers with two players in the top 10. Wheaton is sixth in the country for receptions per outing at 8.0. At their current pace they would become the first two Beavers to eclipse 1,000 yards receiving in the same season since James Newson (1,306) and Mike Hass (1,013) in 2003. WHEATON STREAK: Senior wide receiver Markus Wheaton has quietly put together a 29-game streak of receptions; third in the Pac-12. Wheaton has 184 receptions, fourth for a career at OSU. He also has 2,404 yards receiving, fifth at OSU. The Civil War in November will match two of the fastest players in the country, based on results of a May 4, 2012 track meet in Eugene – in the 100 meters Wheaton placed second with a 10.58 and Oregon’s De’Anthony Thomas third at 10.65. For more on Wheaton’s career stats please turn to page 15 of this week’s game notes. AFTER THE CATCH: The Beaver quarterbacks have used two of their biggest playmakers to eat up yards after making the reception. Brandin Cooks has 355 yards following his receptions or an average of more than 59 yards per game. Markus Wheaton has 194 yards, an average of 32 yards per contest. YARDS AFTER CATCH

2012 BEAVER FOOTBALL • GAME SEVEN • OREGON STATE AT WASHINGTON • OCTOBER 27, 2012

HEAD COACH MIKE RILEY
Mike Riley recently became Oregon State’s all-time winningest football coach with 78 victories and is the longest tenured coach in the Pac-12 Conference, entering his 12th season leading the Orange and Black. His résumé sparkles with achievements. He was the 2008 American Football Coaches Association (AFCA), Pac-10 Conference and State of Oregon Coach of the Year, and his teams have appeared in the final Associated Press top-25 rankings in three of the last six seasons. The 59-year-old head coach has guided the Beavers to six bowl games in the last nine years, winning five, and started the rejuvenation of the program during his first tenure in 1997-98 that subsequently made three postseason appearances. A former head coach for the NFL’s San Diego Chargers, Riley is in his 12th season at Oregon State overall. Riley was hired as OSU’s head coach for the second time Feb. 19, 2003. He has also led his team to outstanding success in the classroom, where over the last five years Beavers have been honored by the league for academic achievement 56 times. He’s also developed future NFL players with 25 draftees since his second arrival in 2003 and has had 77 all-conference selections. Riley is the first coach in OSU history to win more than one NCAAsanctioned bowl game at OSU, capturing hte 2003 Las Vegas Bowl, the 2004 Insight Bowl, the 2006 and 2008 Sun Bowls and the 2007 Emerald Bowl titles. He also is the first coach to lead the program to more than one winning conference season (5-3 in ‘04, 6-3 in ‘06, 6-3 in ‘07, 7-2 in ‘08 and 6-3 in ‘09) since 1969. Mike and his wife, Dee, are the parents of one son, Matthew, and one daughter, Kate. They also have a grandson, Elijah Jo. Matt, an OSU graduate, is currently employed in the Beaver Athletic Department as a video specialist and his wife Lydia (an OSU graduate student) live in Corvallis. Kate is a 2011 OSU graduate and also resides in Corvallis. For Riley’s complete biography turn to page 48 of the 2012 Oregon State Football Media Guide or go to www.osubeavers.com.

CRICHTON AMONG LEADERS: Sophomore defensive end Scott Crichton is second in the nation for sacks per game at 1.3. He now has 14 for his career, which already ranks tied for eighth in the OSU record book. Five of his eight sacks for the season have been in the last three games. With seven forced fumbles for his career, he ranks tied for second in OSU history. He was named to Mark Schlabach’s ESPN.com Midseason All-America team. MANNION’S NUMBERS: Sophomore co-team captain Sean Mannion, who returns to the starting lineup Saturday after missing two games following left knee surgery, is already among the Beaver elite quarterbacks after just 14 starts (16 games total). He is sixth for career passing with 4,686 yards. He has a chance to be OSU’s leader for career passing yards, which is currently held by Derek Anderson (2001-04) with 11,249 yards. VAZ 2-0 AS A STARTER: Junior quarterback Cody Vaz, who was awarded one of the Manning Award’s Stars of the Week Oct. 22, took the place of Sean Mannion as the starting quarterback for the BYU and Utah games. Vaz, a redshirt-junior, played in six games in 2010 in a backup role, completing 6 of 17 passes for 48 yards. His 332 yards passing in his first start of his collegiate career at BYU was the most since Matt Moore had 367 in the 2005 opener and he was selected the Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Week. He was 24-5 as a starter at St. Mary’s High School in Stockton, Calif., where he was named the Stockton Record Player of the Year following the ’08 season. He was one of 10 finalists for the Cal-Hi Sports.com Mr. Football State Player of the Year. In his final two seasons as the starting quarterback Vaz completed 473 of 721 pass attempts for 7,176 yards and 64 touchdowns. UNDEFEATED ON THE ROAD: Oregon State has won all three of its road games (Arizona, UCLA, BYU) this season putting it in rare company nationally. Nevada and Rutgers are 4-0 on the road, followed by 3-0 road teams Oregon State, Kansas State, Texas Tech, TCU, Rutgers, Louisville, Ohio, Northern Illinois, Florida, Alabama, Troy and Louisiana Tech. PLUS-10: As in turnover margin for the Beavers, the best in the Pac-12. OSU’s defense has recovered four fumbles and has 12 interceptions. Last season OSU was 100th at minus-8. SIX GAMES, FOUR PLAYERS OF THE WEEK: Four Beavers have earned Pac-12 Player of the Week honors this season. Cody Vaz earned the honor for Oct. 15 after his 332-yard effort passing in the win at BYU in his first start. OSU’s other honorees include Sean Mannion after a 433-yard three-touchdown effort at Arizona. Keith Kostol, in only his second career game, was the Pac-12 Special Teams Player of the Week for Sept. 24 after punting seven times for a 43.9 yards average and pinning UCLA inside its 20-yard-line four times in the 27-20 win at the No. 19 Bruins. He also had a boot of 61 yards. Linebacker D.J. Welch (now D.J. Alexander) earned Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week following the Sept. 8 win over then No. 13 Wisconsin after making seven tackles, including two-for-loss. IT’S ALL IN A NAME: Two Beavers have changed their last names during the season. Linebacker Feti ‘Unga switched to Feti Taumoepeau in honor of his mother Ofa before the year began and linebacker D.J. Welch changed his name to D.J. Alexander on Oct. 15 in OVERTIME HISTORY honor of his stepfather Eugene.

“THE WORLD’S LONGEST TRAINING CAMP” Oregon State began official preparations for the 2012 season., Mon., Aug. 6 in anticipation of a Sept. 1 contest against Nicholls State at Reser Stadium; Hurricane Isaac forced the game to be moved to Dec. 1 (providing OSU is not in the Pac-12 title game or NSU is not in the FCS playoffs) as NSU was unable to leave campus which meant the Beavers began the year Sept. 8 vs. Wisconsin. OSU practiced 35 times before its first game and 44 times with just one game; thus “the world’s longest training camp” per Mike Riley. If the game vs. Nicholls State on Dec. 1 is played, the Beavers and Alabama would be the only teams in all of the FBS that play the final three games of the schedule at home. BALANCE IS THE KEY: OSU head coach Mike Riley continues to strive for balance on offense between the rush and the pass, and it’s historically when OSU has had its best seasons under the head coach. This year the Beavers are near the 50/50 mark averaging 35 rushes per game and 38 pass attempts. Last year the average was 27 and 42 respectively and thus the Beavers ranked 118th (out of 120) for rushing offense at 86.9 yards per game, and while the improvement is modest it is still improvement to 108.5 yards per outing to this point in the season.

RILEY’S RIGHT-HAND GUYS: Oregon State has been fairly stable in terms of assistant coaches, particularly at the coordinator positions. Defensive coordinator Mark Banker has been on the staff since 2003 in his current role (served 1997-98 seasons as secondary coach) and offensive coordinator Danny Langsdorf has been in his role since 2004 (was a G.A. for TE in 1997-98). Banker was also with Riley for the 1999-2001 seasons with the Chargers (Def. Coord.) and in 1996 at USC. Langsdorf was with the Saints with Riley for the 2002 season. IT WASN’T SUPPOSE TO WORK OUT LIKE THIS: Oregon State is known for its non-conference schedule degree of difficulty in recent years, but this is even a new level in recent history – it’s the first time the Beavers opened the year playing back-to-back nationally ranked teams to begin the season. Historically, OSU has faced top 25 teams in consecutive weeks to open the year four times previous – 1950 (4 straight weeks), 1953, 1960 and 1968. DROPPING THE DIME: Oregon State has implemented a new wrinkle in the defense in 2012 … the dime defense – a product of improved athleticism. With six defensive backs on the field, the Beavers have been able to better combat spread offenses with three or more receivers on the field. In addition, as Jordan Poyer showed with a sack-fumble against Wisconsin the possibilities are endless in attacking the quarterback. The depth in the defensive backfield has vastly improved with players like Steven Christian, a transfer from Hawai’i, and Brian Watkins earning playing time in the package against Wisconsin. When the Beavers upset UCLA it was Anthony Watkins, who had returned from an injury, and Sean Martin, who returned from a one game suspension, that played as the extra defensive backs. BUSTED RANKINGS: Head coach Mike Riley’s teams have made a routine of beating highly ranked teams of late. Recent victims: 2012 – at No. 19 UCLA (27-20 OSU win), vs. No. 13 Wisconsin (10-7); 2010 - at No. 9 Arizona (29-27), vs. No. 20 USC (36-7); 2009 – at No. 23 California (31-14); 2008 vs. No. 1 USC (27-21), vs. No. 24 Pittsburgh (3-0); 2007 – at No. 2 California (31-28), at No. 18 Oregon (38-31 OT); 2006 – vs. No. 3 USC (33-31), at No. 24 Hawai’i (35-32); 2005 – at No. 18 California (23-20).

H-A-N-D-S!!! Special teams coordinator Bruce Read had led his HANDS team to 2-0 on recovering onsides kicks this season, both effectively game clinchers. Wisconsin actually recovered the onsides kick with 1:31 left after narrowing the gap to 10-7, but it was ruled the Badgers had illegally touched the kick prior to the ball going the required 10 yards. Linebacker Michael Doctor recovered UCLA’s kick at 1:47 after the Bruins narrowed the lead to 27-20 on a field goal. GENEALOGY: We don’t need Ancestry.com to help us with the recent family tree of several Beavers who happen to be the sons of former NFL standouts. RB Malcolm Agnew — Father Ray Agnew – 11-year NFL career (Patriots, Giants, Rams) as a DL. DT Blake Harrah — Father Dennis Harrah – 13-year NFL career (Rams) as an OL – 3 Pro Bowls CB Tyler Hasty — Father James Hasty – 14-year NFL career (Jets, Chiefs, Raiders) at DB – 2 Pro Bowls OL Roman Sapolu — Father Jesse Sapolu – 15-year NFL career (49ers) at OG/C – 4 Super Bowls/2 Pro Bowls ONE BIG FAMILY: Oregon State prides itself on having a family atmosphere, in fact one website two years straight named OSU as the “most family friendly” program. This season there are numerous biological connections. Mike Riley (Head Coach) – son Matt is a video coordinator for OSU Athletics Joe Seumalo (DL coach) – sons Andrew (DT) and Isaac (C) are starters Bruce Read (ST coach) – son Josh is a student intern Brent Brennan (WR coach) – brother Brad Brennan is an intern Mike Cavanaugh (OL coach) – son Blair is a freshman WR Rod Perry (DB Coach) – sons Rod Perry, Jr., and Ryan are interns COLORS OF THE GAME: Fans are encouraged to wear the colors of the team jerseys for all seven home games: Orange for Nicholls State, Wisconsin, WSU, Arizona State and Oregon; black for Utah and California. MAKING THE MOST OF HIS OPPORTUNTIES: Sophomore fullback Tyler Anderson has made the most of his opportunities; not only does he excel on special teams, but of his 11 offensive touches this season, eight have either accounted for touchdowns or first downs. HOW DID WE GET TO THIS POINT? Oregon State’s offensive line is one of the youngest in the nation with nine true freshmen on the team. It’s been a unit that has had its share of bumps and bruises, among other things, in recent seasons that has led to a lack of experienced depth. Since 2007 the Beavers have lost 11 scholarship players to career ending injuries, academics or other extenuating circumstances.

COACHES & STAFF Mitch Meeuwsen Joe Seumalo Ariko Iso (athletic trainer)

BATTERY: The Beavers feature one of the youngest center/quarterback combinations in the country with true freshman Isaac Seumalo and sophomore quarterback Sean Mannion or inexperienced junior Cody Vaz. Seumalo started the season opener making him the first true freshman center to start at OSU since future two-time second team Pac-10 selection Roger Levasa snapped the ball in a starting role Sept. 30, 1978 vs. Washington – Hawai’i is the only other team in the FBS that started a true freshman for the season opener while SMU has since started a first-year player. Levasa started 37 games during his career and played professionally in the USFL for the three years with the Oakland Invaders and Portland Breakers. Seumalo is the third true freshman to start on the offensive line in the Riley era (1997-98, 2003-present) joining current teammate Michael Philipp in 2009 and Keith DiDomenico in 1997. THE FUTURE IS NOW, BUT … Oregon State’s two-deep heading into the Washington game is full of underclassmen which bodes well for future seasons. Of the 48 possible players on offense, defense and punter/kicker, 22 are either freshmen or sophomores – this does not take into account OSU’s H-Back and fullback positions – which would add another three to the equation. Specifically on offense, 13 players on the depth chart in the traditional 11 positions are underclassmen. 50 YEARS SINCE: Oregon State is celebrating the 50th anniversary of quarterback Terry Baker’s Heisman Trophy winning season this year. Baker was the first collegiate player to win the coveted award from west of the state of Texas. He led the Beavers, then an independent, to a 9-2 record and a 6-0 victory over Villanova in the Fourth Annual Liberty Bowl in Philadelphia. Baker was a consensus All-America selection to go along with the Maxwell Award and Sports Illustrated Sportsman of the Year recipient. OSU honored the ’62 team by inducting the members of that club, led by then eighth-year head coach Tommy Prothro, into the OSU Sports Hall of Fame Sept. 7. End Vern Burke was also on the team and a consensus All-America after leading the nation for receptions and yards. TEAM CAPTAINS: The 2012 team captains are quarterback Sean Mannion, defensive tackle Andrew Seumalo, wide receiver Markus Wheaton and cornerback Jordan Poyer. Mannion is the first sophomore in OSU history to be named team captain. Head coach Mike Riley also appoints a game captain. 7-GAME HOME SCHEDULE: 2012 features seven home games, if the Sept. 1 Nicholls State game is played, for the first time since the 2006 season. The Beavers also played 7-game slates in 2002 and ’03 and generally that has been a positive as OSU went 17-4 at Reser Stadium during those years. HONORING FRED THOMPSON: OSU tragically lost defensive tackle Fred Thompson Dec. 7, 2011 to natural causes. The team wears “FT 92” on the helmet in honor of him. PAC-12 THIS CENTURY: USC owns the most victories in the Pac-12 Conference this century with 124 (105 with vacated wins), followed by Oregon (117), OSU (93), Cal (85), UCLA (82), Arizona State (82), Stanford (74), Washington (66), WSU (65), Arizona (63). Utah has 106 victories this century and Colorado has 67.

2012 AWARDS & WATCH LISTS NEW COACH: Rod Perry has joined the OSU coaching staff as a full-time secondary coach after 22 seasons in the NFL, most recently with the Indianapolis Colts. Perry was an assistant with Beaver head coach Mike Riley in San Diego with the Chargers. His sons Rodney and Ryan are coaching interns on the team. IS THAT DAVE MAGGARD? It is indeed. Long time Athletic Director Dave Maggard (Cal 1972-91, Miami 1991-93, Houston 2002-09) joined the OSU team as a volunteer special assistant to Director of Athletics Bob De Carolis in August. In addition to his stints as an A.D. he was the Managing Director of Sports for the Atlanta Committee for the 1996 Summer Olympics. The ‘96 games aren’t his only connection to the Olympics; he actually was a competitor and flagbearer for the United States in the 1968 Mexico City Games in the shot put, where he finished fifth. NUMBERS GAME: Mike Huguenin of YahooSports compiled the following numbers for a May 11, 2012 story: “Eight schools can lay claim to having had the most balanced offenses since the turn of the century. Boise State, Houston, Missouri, Oklahoma, Oregon State, Texas, USC and Western Michigan have had at least five 1,000-yard rushers, 3,000-yard passers and 1,000-yard receivers apiece, starting with the 2000 season. The most balanced offense of them all? Using the Yahoo! Sports “Diversification Quotient,” it’s Oregon State and USC. Oregon State has had nine 1,000-yard rushers, six 3,000-yard passers and eight 1,000-yard receivers. USC has had six 1,000-yard rusher, seven 3,000-yard passers and 10 1,000-yard receivers.” To access the full story – http://sports.yahoo.com/news/ncaaf--a-by-the-numbers-look-at-offenses.html WIN THE TURNOVER BATTLE, WIN THE GAME: Over the last 105 games, Oregon State is 41-8 when committing fewer turnovers than its opponent, 10-29 when committing more and 10-7 when even. The Beavers struggled in 2011, losing 31 turnovers (T113th in NCAA) and finished tied for 100th in the NCAA in turnover margin. RESER RECORD: Oregon State’s home record of 56-20 this century at Reser Stadium is third best in the Pac12 Conference, trailing the home records of only Oregon (68-13) and USC (63-14). RUNNING BACK U: Oregon State is the only program in the Pac-12 Conference with three running backs that rank in the top 10 for career rushing in the league; 3. Ken Simonton (1998-2001), 5,044 yards; 8. Jacquizz Rodgers (2008-10), 3,877; 9. Yvenson Bernard (2004-07), 3,862. Steven Jackson (2001-03) ranks 14th with 3,625 yards. Rodgers and Jackson both left OSU after three seasons to enter the NFL.

BEAVERS WITHOUT BORDERS: A host of current and former Oregon State student-athletes have participated in the Beavers Without Borders program that has taken them to Guatemala (Spring Break 2011), Macedonia (Summer 2011) and Ethiopia (summer 2012). Current Beaver football players Rashaad Reynolds, Markus Wheaton, Brian Watkins and Josh Andrews have been on one of those trips each. On those trips the group assisted a building of a house for needy families. There were matching funds, but many of these student-athletes did their own fundraising for the trips. 68-7: That’s the record of Oregon State when it leads after three quarters with Mike Riley as head coach. Since the start of the 2004 season it is 50-3. ONE OF THREE: Second-year athletic trainer Ariko (uh-REE-ko) Iso (E-so) is one of only three female football head trainers in the FBS – Mary Van Heiden at Central Florida and Dawn Hearn at UTEP are the other two. Iso joined the program in late spring of 2011after being the only female trainer in the NFL (Steelers). RPI THIS: Since the 2003 season, when Mike Riley took the controls of the program for the second time, 10 of the 12 road non-conference opponents have finished the season in the Associated Press Top 25 2004 – LSU (No. 16); 2005 – Louisville (No. 20); 2006 – Boise State (No. 6) and Hawai’i (No. 24); 2007 – Cincinnati (No. 20); 2008 – Utah (No. 2) and Penn State (No. 8); 2010 – TCU (No. 2) and Boise State (No. 9); 2011 – Wisconsin (No. 10). Only Fresno State in 2003 and UNLV in 2009 failed to make the final poll. Thanks to Brooks Hatch formerly of the Corvallis Gazette-Times for this nugget. 100-PLUS USUALLY A W: When a Beaver rushes for 100-plus yards it usually equals a victory. OSU has won 25 of its last 29 games (86%) when a rusher gains 100 – the only four losses in that period – Oct. 2, 2008 at Utah (Jacquizz Rodgers 101 yds), Oct. 24, 2009 at USC (Jacquizz 113), Oct. 16, 2010 at Washington (Jacquizz 140) and Sept. 3, 2011 vs. Sacramento State (Malcolm Agnew 223). RULE CHANGES: The NCAA has adopted the following rules changes for the 2012 season: 1. Kickoffs from 35-yard line from the 30, mirroring a similar change by the NFL in the 2011 season and rescinding a rule change made in the 2007 season. 2. The kicking team has only a five-yard running head start on kickoffs, again mirroring the NFL changes in 2011. 3. Touchbacks move COACH GAME DAY LOCATIONS from the 20-yard line to the 25-yard line only on kickoffs and free kicks after a safety. Touchbacks on punts SIDELINE PRESSBOX rolling into the end zone or fumbles into the end zone remain at the 20-yard line. 4. Players are forbidden to Mike Riley, HC Danny Langsdorf, OC / QB leap over other players when blocking punts. 5. Players who lose their helmets during a play (except when Mark Banker, DC Mike Cavanaugh, OL Rod Perry, Secondary caused by fouls such as grabbing the facemask) have to leave the field for one play. 6. Offensive players in the Bruce Read, Special Teams Alan Darlin, GA / DL tackle box at the snap who are not in motion are allowed to block below the waist legally without restriction. Chris Brasfield, RB Mitch Meeuwsen, GA / DB All other players are restricted from blocking below the waist with some exceptions (i.e. blocking straight-on), Brent Brennan, WR / TE Jay Locey, Asst. WE’RE NUMBER 6, NOW 5! Corvallis, home to Oregon State University, ranks sixth in the nation for best college towns for 2012 by Livability.com. 2012 BEAVER FOOTBALL • GAME SEVEN • OREGON STATE AT WASHINGTON • OCTOBER 27, 2012

GAME 1 — OREGON STATE VS. WISCONSIN
#13 WISCONSIN OREGON STATE
Reser Stadium Corvallis, Ore. • Sept. 8, 2012 CORVALLIS — In what many termed as the biggest nonconference home game in Oregon State football history, the Beavers’ defense put on a show that will be remembered for a very long time. OSU stymied No. 13 Wisconsin and Heisman Trophy-candidate Montee Ball for much of the afternoon as the Beavers earned a 10-7 victory. Wisconsin, in danger of being shut out for the first time since 1997, pieced together a 64-yard drive to get on the board with 1:31 to play. The drive was aided by a pass interference call on the Beavers, but the Badgers were in no position to turn down the free yardage. Wisconsin quarterback Danny O’Brien capped the drive with an 11-yard touchdown pass to bring Wisconsin back to within one score. With no timeouts remaining, Wisconsin appeared to recover the onside kick. After a video review, however, it was determined that a Badger touched the ball prior to it traveling the required 10 yards. OSU killed the clock and Wisconsin’s 33-game regular-season non-conference winning streak. The Beavers did it by controlling the ball and stuffing Ball and the Badgers. OSU held the ball for 35:35 while outgaining Wisconsin, 354-207. Ball finished with just 65 yards rushing as the Beavers did not allow him to break their outside containment. Ball also did not score a touchdown for the first time in 22 games. The Beavers’ touchdown came on their first drive of the second half. After converting just 2-of-9 third downs in the first half, Oregon State had two crucial third down completions to sustain the drive. Sean Mannion connected with Markus Wheaton for 18 yards on a 3rd-and-7 from the OSU 17 yard line. After being flagged on a false start to force a 3rd-and-12, Mannion hit Brandin Cooks in the back of the end zone for a 20-yard touchdown strike. Cooks had six catches for 80 yards, while Wheaton led the way with eight catches for 87 yards. Wheaton now has 144 career catches which moves him into eighth place in school history. The Beavers controlled play in the first half but only had a 43-yard second quarter field goal by Trevor Romaine to show for it. Oregon State ran 44 offensive plays to Wisconsin’s 24 and outgained the Badgers, 238-64. Wisconsin’s defense bent, but it didn’t break. The Beavers moved the ball into Wisconsin territory numerous times, only to fail to convert on a pair of fourth down tries and on a 40-yard field goal with 21 seconds remaining in the half. While the OSU offense effectively moved the ball, the defense made life miserable for Wisconsin quarterback Danny O’Brien and company. The Badgers had six drives in the first half. All six ended in punts and Wisconsin went three-and-out on four of them. Ball finished the first half with just 34 yards on eight carries. Life didn’t improve much for O’Brien in the third quarter. After OSU scored to make it 10-0, Wisconsin had its best starting field position of the day at its own 42. Ball rushed twice for minus-2 yards, and O’Brien’s third down pass was intercepted by Ryan Murphy. Still down just 10-0, it looked as though the Badgers were given new life after a botched punt on the ensuing OSU possession. Put in its toughest circumstance of the day, the Beaver defense made its own splash play to preserve the shutout. Wisconsin drove to the Oregon State 9 yard line, but Dylan Wynn blitzed O’Brien’s blind side and forced a fumble that was recovered by Scott Crichton. Wisconsin turned the ball over on downs twice in the fourth quarter before scoring its touchdown with 1:31 remaining.

GAME 2 — OREGON STATE AT UCLA
OREGON STATE #19 UCLA
Rose Bowl Pasadena, Calif. • Sept. 22, 2012 PASADENA, Calif. — Sean Mannion passed for a careerhigh 379 yards and two touchdowns, Oregon State put the clamps on No. 19 UCLA’s offense, and the Beavers opened their Pac-12 Conference season by topping the Bruins 27-20 . The victory was the 74th at OSU for coach Mike Riley, matching the school record set by Lon Stiner, the Beavers’ coach from 1933-48. Riley is in his 12th year with OSU. Oregon State’s Markus Wheaton had nine receptions for 150 yards and has caught at least one pass in 25 consecutive games. Brandin Cooks had six catches for 175 yards, and Storm Woods rushed for 96 yards on 21 carries. The Bruins (3-1, 0-1 Pac-12) scored 15 touchdowns and averaged 622.0 yards to rank second nationally in total offense in their previous three games. But the Beavers (2-0, 1-0) held them to 444 yards and two TDs. UCLA’s Johnathan Franklin, the country’s leading rusher entering the game with a 180.3-yard average, was held to 45 yards on 12 carries. Redshirt freshman Brett Hundley completed 27 of 42 passes for 372 yards and a touchdown. Trailing 17-10, the Bruins blew two scoring chances in the third quarter. First, they failed to convert a fourth-and-2 at the Oregon State 35-yard line after Anthony Barr forced a fumble by Mannion at the Beavers 43 and Tevin McDonald recovered. The Bruins got another chance when Stan McKay intercepted Mannion’s pass at the Beavers 48 on the next play, but they were forced to punt. The Beavers then moved 88 yards on 13 plays to take a 24-10 lead, scoring on a 2-yard run by Storm Woods one play after a pass interference penalty against Sheldon Price on third-and-goal. UCLA responded by getting a 1-yard sneak from Hundley that capped a 75-yard drive and made it 24-17 with 14:01 to play. OSU got its 10-point lead back on Trevor Romaine’s 17-yard field goal with 9:33 left. The Bruins had a chance to get within seven points again, but Ka’i Fairbairn was wide right on a 42-yard field goal with 7:37 remaining. Fairbairn kicked a 35-yarder with 1:47 left, but Oregon State recovered UCLA’s onside kick and ran out all but the final five seconds Romaine’s 22-yard field goal on Oregon State’s first possession gave the Beavers a 3-0 lead, but the Bruins tied it on a 22-yard field goal by Fairbairn early in the second quarter. Oregon State took the lead back on the next scrimmage play - a 75-yard touchdown pass from Mannion to Cooks. Mannion’s 42-yard scoring pass to Wheaton later in the second period made it 17-3. Hundley threw a 65-yard touchdown pass to Shaquelle Evans with 49 seconds remaining before halftime to trim Oregon State’s lead to seven points.

2012 BEAVER FOOTBALL • GAME SEVEN • OREGON STATE AT WASHINGTON • OCTOBER 27, 2012

GAME 3 — OREGON STATE AT ARIZONA
#18 OREGON STATE ARIZONA
Arizona Stadium Tucson, Ariz. • Sept. 29, 2012 TUCSON, Ariz. — Sean Mannion passed for 433 yards and three touchdowns, including the game-winner to Connor Hamlett from nine yards out with 1:17 remaining in the fourth quarter, to help send the 18th-ranked Oregon State football team to a 38-35 win over Arizona. The win sent head coach Mike Riley to his 75th all-time win at OSU, surpassing Lon Stiner for the most in school history. The sophomore completed 29-of-45 attempts and found Markus Wheaton for touchdown strikes of 2 and 20 yards, respectively, while the senior receiver caught 10 passes overall for 166 yards. For the second consecutive week, he was joined by Brandin Cooks at the 100yard receiving plateau - Cooks had 149 yards on nine catches. The Beavers’ ground game got going in a big way in the win, with Storm Woods on the strength of 29 carries for 161 yards. The redshirt freshman put the Beavers up 24-21 in the third quarter with a 1-yard touchdown rush. The Beavers totaled 613 yards of total offense, which, in itself is notable as it stands as the sixth-best single-game output in OSU history, and the most since the team gained 654 yards against Arizona in 2005. Mannion’s final touchdown strike of the game - which ended as Oregon State’s sixth straight win over the Wildcats in Tucson - left 1:17 on the clock, forcing the team’s defense to make a stand. That’s just what the “D” did. Rashaad Reynolds picked off Arizona quarterback Matt Scott on 1st-and-10 from the Wildcats’ 44. It capped an impressive defensive night for Reynolds, whose five pass breakups in the first half tied Dennis Weathersby’s school record. The win sent the Beavers to a 3-0 record; it’s the first time since 2000 Oregon State ended the month of September with a perfect mark. The Oregon State comeback was necessitated in the fourth quarter when Austin Hill caught a 7-yard pass from Scott with 5:34 remaining. The Wildcats’ first lead came early in the third quarter when Ka’Deem Carey put Arizona up 21-17 with a 24-yard touchdown run. That marked the first time this season the Beavers trailed. OSU went up 17-0 through the first quarter and a half of play. Mannion’s first strike to Wheaton put OSU up 7-0 in the first quarter, then watched as Trevor Romaine lengthened the lead to 10-0 with a 30-yard field goal at the 10:59 mark of the second quarter. Tyler Anderson scored his first career touchdown later in the second quarter on a 1-yard rush and it appeared to put the Beavers in the driver’s seat.

GAME 4 — OREGON STATE VS. WASHINGTON STATE
WASHINGTON STATE #14 OREGON STATE
Reser Stadium Corvallis, Ore. • Oct. 6, 2012 Senior Jordan Poyer became the first Oregon State player to intercept three passes in a game in almost nine years as the Beavers stymied Washington State on their way to a 19-6 victory at Reser Stadium in front of a school-record crowd of 46,579. The win moves Oregon State to 4-0 (3-0 Pac-12) on the year, the first time it has started a season with four-straight wins since 2002 and only the fifth time in the last 73 years. Oregon State’s defense fed off of that home crowd in keeping the Cougars out of the end zone, forcing five turnovers and holding them to just 20 yards rushing on the day. Fifteen of those 20 yards came on a Carl Winston carry late in the fourth quarter. The last time OSU kept a team from scoring a touchdown in a game was against Pittsburgh in the 2008 Sun Bowl. OSU marched the ball in the first quarter, racking up 107 yards of offense to WSU’s 22. The only score of the opening quarter, however, came on a Trevor Romaine 30-yard field goal on the Beavers’ opening possession. The teams traded field goals in the second, with Romaine’s 24-yarder with 2:51 remaining pushing the Beavers into a 6-3 halftime advantage after the teams traded turnovers on three consecutive possessions within a two-minute span. Senior Rudolf Fifita recovered his first career fumble at the WSU 34-yard line, but Sean Mannion was picked off three plays later as lineman Ioane Gauta rumbled 38 yards on the return into OSU territory. But just two plays later, senior safety Anthony Watkins squashed the threat with an interception of his own. Those two turnovers, combined with Poyer’s three picks, combined to give the Beavers five on the day. He wasn’t the only star on defense, though. Sophomore defensive end Scott Crichton tallied three sacks, becoming the first Beaver to pull off that feat since Stephen Paea against UCLA on Oct. 31, 2009. That lead expanded to double digits on the first possession of the second half as Mannion connected with senior wide receiver Markus Wheaton on a 12-yard touchdown strike in the back corner of the end zone to make it 13-3. It was the Wheaton’s fourth touchdown catch of the season, tying a career high. WSU inched back into the game with a 32-yard Andrew Furney field goal on a drive severely aided by penalties. The Cougars accepted 30 yards worth of Beaver penalties on the 72-yard drive, coming on a personal foul and pass interference call. With the game still in doubt, the offense manufactured its most impressive drive of the day. Mannion was 4-for-7 including a pair of clutch completions to sophomore receiver Brandin Cooks in third-and-long situations. He found Cooks for 13 yards on a third-and-11 and later hit him for 12 more on a third-and-eight in Cougar territory. Three plays later, sophomore fullback Tyler Anderson plunged in from the 1-yard line to give the Beavers a 19-6 lead. Poyer then sealed the game with his final interception on Washington State’s ensuing drive. He stepped in front of a receiver in the left flat and raced 50 yards before stumbling inside the Cougars’ 20-yard line.

2012 BEAVER FOOTBALL • GAME SEVEN • OREGON STATE AT WASHINGTON • OCTOBER 27, 2012

GAME 5 — OREGON STATE AT BYU
#10 OREGON STATE BYU
LaVell Edwards Stadium Provo, Utah • Oct. 13, 2012 (AP) — Never mind if Cody Vaz hadn’t taken a snap since 2010, or started a game since he was in high school. The Oregon State backup-turned-starter made it look easy in the Beavers’ 42-24 win over BYU, passing for three touchdowns and 332 yards against a defense rated fifth in the nation. It was the block he made on a BYU defensive lineman that paved the way for Markus Wheaton to score on a 12-yard fourth-quarter reverse that bumped No. 10 Oregon State’s lead to 11 points with 5:30 remaining. Heading into the game, Vaz was the unheralded backup to sophomore sensation Sean Mannion. Then Mannion injured his left knee, thrusting the 6-1, 198-pound junior into the lineup, on the road, against a “blackout” crowd and a BYU team donning black uniforms for the first time in the modern era. “I knew all along that Cody is a pretty good player, but I also knew this is a pretty hard venue to step into,” Oregon State coach Mike Riley said. “I thought guys helped him out and made plays.” Vaz came out firing, completing his first five passes for 75 yards, capped by a 11-yard TD pass to Wheaton. He tossed a 24-yard scoring strike to Wheaton with 3:01 left in the quarter for a 14-7 Oregon State lead. Oregon State is 5-0 for the first time since 1939, while BYU fell to 4-3. Cooks caught eight passes for 173 yards for the Beavers. The Beavers also got some help on the ground, gaining 118 yards -double what BYU had been allowing. Storm Woods and Malcolm Agnew led the way, with Woods scoring on a 16-yard third-quarter run for a 21-14 lead. Vaz’s third TD pass was pure luck as BYU linebacker Kyle Van Noy tipped it at the line. Tight end Colby Prince grabbed it in the end zone for a touchdown while surrounded by three defenders. It gave Oregon State a 28-21 lead with 14:48 remaining. A 35-yard field goal by Justin Sorensen pulled BYU within 28-24 with 8:55 left. Nelson, who had missed the previous two games with what he said were “back fractures,” countered Oregon State’s first score with a 10-play, 75-yard drive of his own. He showed he was healthy from the start, bootlegging left on BYU’s first play from scrimmage and rumbling 16 yards. The score was tied at 21 after Jamaal Williams’ 2-yard run late in the third quarter. The Beavers outscored BYU 21-3 the rest of the way, rolling up 450 yards offense against a team that had held its previous 12 opponents under 300 yards. Vaz’s final scoring drive covered 77 yards and was aided by back-to-back pass interference calls that moved the ball to the Cougars’ 12. Wheaton took it the rest of the way, then Jordan Poyer’s 11th career interception - one he returned 49 yards for a touchdown, sealed the win.

GAME 6 — OREGON STATE VS. UTAH
UTAH #8 OREGON STATE
Reser Stadium Corvallis, Ore. • Oct. 20, 2012 Redshirt freshman running back Storm Woods rushed for a career-high three touchdowns and the Oregon State defense forced four crucial turnovers on the way to a 21-7 victory over Utah in OSU’s Homecoming game at Reser Stadium. Oregon State is now 6-0 for the first time in 105 years. The 1907 team finished that campaign with an undefeated 6-0 record. The previous week against BYU, quarterback Cody Vaz came out on fire as the Beavers’ offense set the tone for the game early on. Against Utah, the defense took the leading role in staking the Beavers to a 14-0 lead. Utah quarterback Travis Wilson overthrew DeVonte Christopher across the middle, and the pass was intercepted by Michael Doctor at the Utah 35-yard line and returned 19 yards with 2:02 left in the first quarter. It was Doctor’s third career interception. Vaz hit tight end Connor Hamlett for 12 yards to the Utah 4 and Woods went off right tackle two plays later from a yard out to open the scoring. On Utah’s ensuing possession, Wilson was hit by Rudolf Fifita as he rolled left, jarring the ball loose. Dylan Wynn jumped on the fumble at the Utah 10-yard line, and two plays later, Woods plunged in from two yards out to make it 14-0 with 14:27 remaining in the half. Though the Beavers were outgained 175-98 in the first half, they benefited from the takeaways as their two scoring drives combined to cover just 26 yards. Utah responded two drives later with a 10-play, 88-yard drive capped by an 18-yard touchdown pass from Wilson to Jake Murphy to make it 14-7 with 6:00 to play in the second quarter. The score snapped the Beavers’ streak of not allowing a touchdown at home at 85 minutes and 31 seconds. Utah did have an opportunity to jump ahead first. Wilson hit a 35-yard pass to Luke Matthews on the Utes’ first play from scrimmage, but Coleman Peterson missed a 43-yard field goal after the drive stalled in OSU territory. The Utes moved to the Beavers’ 3-yard line on the opening possession of the second half after a pass interference call. But after twice trying unsuccessfully to pound it into the end zone, Wilson’s pitch on a reverse to Christopher didn’t connect and Scott Crichton recovered at the OSU 10-yard line. The missed opportunity would be the Utes’ best chance to tie the score. Instead, they finished with seven points to become the third team to come to Reser Stadium in 2012 without scoring double digits. The last time an Oregon State team held three opponents to under 10 points at home was 2000. The Beavers added an insurance score in the fourth quarter. After taking an illegal block below the waist penalty to push the ball back to the 19, Vaz hooked up with Kevin Cummings to make up the 25 yards for an OSU first down. Later on the drive, Cummings made his second catch on a third down that was short of the lead stick, but a helmet-to-helmet foul on the Utes gave the Beavers a fresh set of downs at the Utah 26. Vaz found Wheaton on the next play to the 2-yard line, and then Woods went in off the right side for the third time to push it to 21-7. Sean Martin sealed the win with his first career interception late. It gave the Beavers 12 interceptions on the season. They had 11 all of last year. It’s the second time in three weeks OSU has forced at least four turnovers in a game. They forced five against Washington State. The Beavers are 4-0 in conference play for the first time since the opening season of the Pac-8 in 1968.
