COUNTY
Population: 105,240
(July 2008 estimates,
Population Research
Center at Portland State
University)
What is now Douglas
County was originally
part of Umpqua County,
established by the Ore-
gon territorial govern-
ment in 1851 — just
eight years after the
start of the major west-
ward migration over the
Oregon Trail.
Gold was discovered
in the Umpqua Valley,
bringing an instant
increase in settlers.
The first meeting of
the Umpqua County
government was held in
Elkton. Subsequent meetings took place in
Green Valley and in Yoncalla.
In 1852, Douglas County was carved out
of a portion of Umpqua County lying east of
the Coast Range. It was named after U.S.
Sen. Stephen A. Douglas of Illinois, a
staunch supporter of Oregon statehood.
Later, the gold boom in Umpqua County
petered out, the population dwindled and in

Blacktail deer keep up a watchful eye in a field near Oakland.
1862, the rest of that county was absorbed
into Douglas County.
That followed the 1856 annexation of
Camas Valley from Coos County. Further
boundary adjustments were made with Jack-
son and Lane counties in 1915.
Today, Douglas County covers 5,071
square miles. It’s bordered by six counties
— Lane County to the north, Jackson,
Josephine and Curry counties to the south,
Coos County to the west and Klamath Coun-
ty to the east.
Winchester was the original county seat of
Douglas County, but only held that distinc-

Residents later voted to move the seat in

1854 to Deer Creek, which, a year later, was
renamed Roseburg after Aaron Rose.
Douglas County originally operated under
a county court, featuring a county judge and
two commissioners.
The current system of three commission-
ers with equal authority was adopted in
1965. In 2008, commissioners begun to be
elected on a nonpartisan basis.
Previously, they were elected by party or
candidates could run as nonaffiliated.
Besides the three commissioners, who are
elected by voters throughout the county,
Douglas County also has an elected sheriff,
district attorney, clerk, assessor, treasurer
and surveyor.

Experience the
SOFCU difference!
IT’S ALL ABOUT YOU!
...as the new Branch Manager of SOFCU Community Credit
Union in Roseburg and North Bend. Marty hails from Auburn,
California, where he worked as a loan offcer specializing in
real estate fnancing for twenty fve years.
When asked why he chose to come to work for SOFCU,
Marty’s answer was easy and quick. He agrees with how
SOFCU operates and believes in their philosophy that
“members come frst”. Marty grew up in Grants Pass. In fact,
he got his frst experience with SOFCU by pulling their weeds
as a teenager. His passion for Credit Unions and what they
represent has only increased over the years. As Marty puts it,
“Members own the Credit Union, so they actually have a say in how the business is
operated. It’s as though you are coming to a family member for your fnancial needs.”
The Roseburg Branch of SOFCU has 8000 members. Marty’s goal is to grow
membership equal to the Grants Pass Branch.
Marty enjoys spending his free time with his family. He is looking forward to the day
when his wife and two children join him in Douglas County.
SOFCU lobby hours: Monday & Friday 9AM - 6PM, Tuesday - Thursday 10AM - 5PM
Drive thru Monday - Friday 7AM - 7PM

ROSEBURG
Population: 21,235
(July 2008 estimate, Population Research
Center at Portland State University)
N
estled in the heart of Douglas
County, Roseburg has dubbed
itself The Timber Capital of the
Nation, and serves as the gate-
way to the Douglas fir-lined North
Umpqua River and Crater Lake National
Park via Highway 138, which heads east
from town.
The regional hub as well as Douglas
County seat attracts locals and tourists
alike to its cultural events and riverside
parks, as well as the Douglas County Fair
and summer concert series Music on the
Half Shell, which lure big-name perform-
ers.
The South Umpqua River winds through
the heart of Roseburg, meeting up with the
North Umpqua just northwest of town.
The city of 21,235 is the area’s retail and
home improvement destination and boasts
restaurants with international cuisine from
Chinese and Italian to Greek, Mexican and
Japanese.
Located just off of Interstate 5, Rose-
burg is 72 miles south of Eugene, and 124
miles north of the California border. It
rests amid some of the world’s richest tim-
ber land, and became a major lumber pro-
ducer during the post-World War II hous-
ing boom. At the timber industry’s height,
278 mills operated in Douglas County.
First visited by white settlers and gold
seekers in the 1840s, the town was platted
as Deer Creek by New Yorker Aaron Rose
in 1851. Three years later, the town was
officially mapped, renamed Roseburg —
after Aaron — and became the county seat.
Roseburg’s Main Street follows the
Applegate Trail, mapped in 1846 by pio-
neers led by Jesse Applegate and Levi

Scott. A historical marker on the west side
of the Douglas County Courthouse com-
memorates and describes this wagon trail,
also called the Old South Road.
Mount Nebo, named after the mountain
that Moses stood atop to view the prom-
ised land, overlooks the city and Garden
Valley. Pioneers believed this aptly
described the high ground in the bend of
the South Umpqua River that proves a
spectacular viewpoint.
Roseburg abounds with historical homes
and landmarks, but many spots were
irreparably damaged or destroyed during a
1959 explosion downtown that leveled
businesses, killed 14 people, injured more
than 100 others and caused $10 million in
damage. The Blast, as it’s known, was the
third-most deadly disaster in Oregon histo-
ry, and today is the subject of seasonal
walking tours.
In spite of adversity, the city has man-
aged to maintain many historical build-
ings, including the neoclassical Douglas
County Courthouse at 1036 S.E. Douglas
Ave. The structure was built in a space city
founder Aaron Rose donated in the 1850s
for use as a public square. In 1955, rectan-
gular additions were made to each end of
the original 1929 structure.
The Mill-Pine neighborhood was Rose-
burg’s first nationally registered historic

district, commemorating the community’s
railroad workers of the late 19th century.
The housing development grew after the
first steam locomotives arrived in Rose-
burg in 1872.
The railroad established a roundhouse,
repair yard, warehouses and an office until
the division headquarters and shops were
moved to Eugene.
The former Southern Pacific Railroad
Depot at 705 S.E. Sheridan St. was the
third to serve Roseburg. It is now a micro-
brewery operated by McMenamins of
Portland. The coming of the railroad was
vital to communities along the north-south
transportation route and Roseburg was a
major railroad center until 1927. Passenger
service was terminated in 1951.
A railroad switchyard lies at the south
end of town that is operated by a freight
line, the Central Oregon Pacific & Pacific
Railroad. The railroad offices are at 333
S.E. Mosher Ave.

ROSEBURG
district are echoes of a not-so-distant past
when timber barons and respected doctors,
lawyers and politicians built opulent monu-
ments to their success.
The elaborately decorated three-story,
Queen Anne-style Moses Parrott house at
1772 S.E. Jackson St. is a vivid reminder of
this. Parrott, a shoemaker, came to this area
with his wife, Tennessee, in the early
1850s.
Today, the home is privately owned. No
tours are given, but it can be viewed easily
from Stephens Street.
The Floed-Lane house at 544 S.E. Dou-
glas Ave. is more commonly known as the
Joseph Lane House and is the only surviv-
ing structure associated with this pioneer
soldier and statesman. Lane was a commis-
sioned brigadier general during the Mexi-
can War. He was the Oregon Territory’s del-
egate to Congress from 1851 to 1859 and
was the state’s first U.S. senator from 1859
to 1861. In 1860 he was the Southern
Democratic candidate for vice president.
The home was owned by Lane’s daughter
and son-in-law, John and Emily Floed, and
built between 1866-76. Lane lived nearby
during his final years and spent much of his
time with his daughter. The Floed-Lane
House is maintained by the Douglas County
Historical Society. Hours are 1 to 4 p.m.
Saturdays and Sundays or by appointment.
Admission is free but donations are
accepted.
Today, Roseburg also has two cinemas,
theaters, book stores, coffee houses and
numerous restaurants.

F
rom deer to turkeys, the call of the
wild is strong in Douglas County.
The area’s hills, rivers and deep woods
offer excellent opportunities for sports-
men during respective hunting seasons.
“Douglas County has some of the best, most
diverse habitat in the state,” Oregon Depart-
ment of Fish and Wildlife Southwest Region
manager Steve Denney said. “Virtually every
corner of the county provides habitat for some
wildlife species.”
People interested in the hunting and fishing
available in Douglas County are encouraged to
obtain Oregon Department of Fish and
Wildlife fishing synopses and the big game
and game bird regulations to check dates,
boundaries and regulations.
These are available at the ODFWoffice at
4192 North Umpqua Highway, Roseburg, or at
counters in stores where sporting goods are
sold.

are found almost everywhere in the county. Num-
bers are higher on agricultural land and on 5- to
20-year-old harvested units in the forests.
Roosevelt elk live throughout the county. They
feed in new clearcut areas and use more mature
timber for cover and shelter. The first day or two
of elk hunting seasons is traditionally most suc-
cessful. After this time, the animals usually move
to the thickest cover they can find.
The best population of black bears in Douglas
County is in the Coast Range around berry
patches and old orchards. The next best place to
find bears is in the lower Cascades.
Douglas County has some of the highest den-
sities of cougars recorded in the United States.
These big cats are primarily found in good elk
and deer habitat since these animals are their
favorite foods. A portion of the Umpqua Valley
and surrounding foothills is open for cougar hunt-
ing all year with the appropriate tag.
Douglas County also is home to many other
species including coyotes, bobcats, raccoons, sil-
ver gray squirrels, beaver, otter and muskrats.
Very few of these animals are hunted by the
general public but they are pursued by trappers.
Silver gray squirrels are not legal to trap, but are
legal to hunt.
Trapping regulations are available at the
regional ODFW office in Roseburg or are avail-
able on the Internet at http://www.dfw.state.or.us/.
FOWL
Turkeys were introduced to this area many years
ago. The county’s turkey population has expanded
into the largest in the state. There are now two
turkey hunting seasons in Douglas County — in
the fall and spring.
Turkeys are scattered throughout the county.
Much of their habitat is on private land, so it is
always a good idea to obtain permission from
landowners before hunting season begins.
Other game birds in the county are mountain
quail, valley quail, blue grouse, ruffed grouse,
band-tailed pigeons, mourning doves, ducks and
geese.
Brushy hillsides, creek bottoms, springs and
clearcut areas provide homes for the mountain
quail. Douglas County has good populations of
the bird. Valley quail are found in agricultural
areas on the valley floor. Most of their habitat is
private property, so permission is needed to hunt.
Blue grouse are found primarily in higher-ele-
vation forests where they spend a lot of time near
berry patches and on the edges of clearcuts.
They also spend some time in old-growth timber
stands.
Creek and river bottoms, springs and other
moist areas are popular home sites for ruffed
grouse.
Weather and migration dictate whether band-
tailed pigeons will be found in Douglas County
during the hunting season. The birds frequent
forests around mineral springs through summer
and early autumn. After the first warm rains fall,
the birds move to berry patches and when cooler
rains hit, the pigeons begin their migration to

California , where they will winter.
If there’s a long, warm fall, bandtails will be found
in good numbers. During a cool fall, the birds will
migrate quickly and hunting opportunities will be
curtailed.
Like bandtails, mourning doves can be found in
good numbers in Douglas County whenever
there’s a long, warm fall.
Douglas County is not a major population center
for ducks, but there are small populations of wood
ducks, mallards and a growing winter population of
wigeons. Those birds are found primarily along
rivers and at ponds on the valley floor. Most ducks
are found on private land, so permission is needed
to hunt them.
Canada geese were brought into Douglas Coun-
ty several years ago and the population has
expanded dramatically. They are found primarily
along rivers and livestock pastures and most hunt-
ing is done with decoys. Geese are usually found
on private property, so hunters are reminded to
check with landowners for permission to hunt.
FISHING
Anglers in Douglas County are rarely hard up for
a place to fish throughout the year. There is usually
a fishery on the bite in the county’s waterways.
Area rivers and lakes have a national reputation
for providing angler enjoyment.
The spring chinook are one of the most abun-
dant fish in the Umpqua. The salmon enter the
Umpqua River from March through June, hold in
deep pools during July and August and spawn in
September and October. A springer caught in the
main Umpqua earlier this year weighed 49 pounds,
but the average spring salmon is 20 to 25 pounds.
The South Umpqua River, the mainstem
Umpqua and the Smith River contain most of the
fall chinook. When fall rains increase the water level
and cool the water temperature, the fish begin a
quick migration upstream.
Fall chinook enter the Umpqua estuary in August
and migrate into October. The South Umpqua is
closed to fall chinook angling, but the main stem
Umpqua River and Smith River estuary provide
excellent angling opportunities.
The summer steelhead run is composed of both
wild and hatchery fish. The best fishing for summer
steelhead is from June to October. They average 6
to 8 pounds in size.
Fly-fishing for summer steelhead is popular on
the North Umpqua, especially in the 33 miles of fly-
angling-only water from Rock Creek upriver to
Soda Springs Dam.
Winter steelhead are present in the North, South
Umpqua and main stem Umpqua rivers and in the
Smith River. They begin their migration from the
ocean in November. January through March are
the best fishing months.
The North Umpqua and Smith River have
healthy runs of wild winter steelhead. The South
Umpqua has both wild and hatchery runs. The total
steelhead run is estimated to be more than 25,000
fish in the Umpqua Basin during most years.
A large North Umpqua wild fish can weigh in at
more than 20 pounds. The South Umpqua fish
average 7 to 10 pounds.
All wild winter steelhead must be released.
Coho, also known as silvers, are found through-
out the Umpqua River system. An adult Umpqua
Basin coho averages 10 pounds. Hatchery coho
are available for harvest from August to November.
Rainbow trout is the species of trout most com-
monly stocked in the Umpqua River system. The
reservoirs are stocked annually with about 30,000
hatchery rainbow trout of legal size (8 to 12 inches)
just prior to spring vacation in March. Fish stocking
continues into June and again in late August.
Best trout fishing is in early spring, beginning in
March and lasting through May when the fish are
actively feeding. The best bait is salmon eggs,
worms or small flies that match whatever is hatch-
ing on shore at the time. Lures also can

CURTIN
Unincorporated town
Population: 209 (2000 U.S. Census)
Named for Daniel Curtin, who operated a sawmill
there in the early 1890s. The small town is at the
northernmost border of Douglas County on Interstate
5.

DRAIN
Population: 1,080 (July 2008 estimate, Popula-
tion Research Center at Portland State University)
Drain, about 45 miles north of Roseburg, was
named for pioneer Charles Drain, who took up a
donation land claim there. The town was first called
Drain after the Oregon & California Railroad
planned to establish a station there in 1870. The
home of Charles Drain Jr., a Queen Anne-style house
built in 1893 called The Castle, still stands and
serves as a tourist attraction. Other tourist attractions
include the Pass Creek covered bridge behind the
Civic Center, and other Victorian houses.
Dining fare includes La Pinata, Gateway Inn, the
Reel Sportsman Pizzeria, the Toad Belly Deli and the
Rose Garden Inn. Drain is also home to the only
public outdoor swimming pool in North Douglas
County.

OAKLAND
Population: 945 (July 2008 estimate,
Population Research Center at Portland State Uni-
versity)
In 1968, this community was the first in Oregon to
establish a National Historic District. About 15 miles
north of Roseburg off I-5 at Exit 138 on Old High-
way 99, Oakland was moved from its original loca-
tion to the present town site because of Oregon &
California Railroad construction in 1872. Ahistoric
panel sign on a warehouse near the railroad tracks
notes the Applegate Trail site and facts about its emi-
grants.
Alandmark commemorating one of them is locat-
ed on a granite boulder one mile north of town on
old Highway 99. The Rev. J.A. Cornwall landmark
memorializes the pioneer who was born in 1798 in
Continued on page 47
Franklin County, Ga., and was among the first
Applegate Trail emigrants. Weakened by the jour-
ney, sickness and Cornwall’s unwillingness to
abandon his personal library, he and his family
erected a cabin in 1846 in the vicinity of the current
landmark.
In early 2008, the Baimbridge-Kanipe Farm-
stead, located on Elkhead Road, was added to the
National Register of Historic Places. The 18-acre
farmstead is part of the 1,090-acre Mildred Kanipe
Memorial Park. The 100-year English Settlement
School that is also part of the Memorial Park was
added to the register in September 2007.
Several Victorian-era homes have been preserved
or renovated, and the quaint old town offers fine
dining at Tolly’s and Oakland Museum celebrating
its history on Southeast Locust Street. The city also
boasts a bustling antiques trade. Awalking tour
map is available at City Hall throughout the year.

SUTHERLIN
Population: 7,795 (July 2008 estimate, Popula-
tion Research Center at Portland State University)
Twelve miles north of Roseburg, Sutherlin is the
second-largest city in Douglas County. Fendel
Sutherlin established the community in 1851 after
traveling west to join the California gold rush.
Among several historic landmarks is the two-
story Sutherlin Bank Building, which has been at
the intersection of State Street and Central Avenue
since 1910 — a year before the city was incorporat-
ed. The building is constructed of sandstone hauled
to the site from a quarry at Deady Crossing, where
Chinese laborers cut the stone.
Today, the city offers several fine eateries; parks;
an annual Blackberry Festival, which pulls in a
number of antique and classic cars and hosts a
blackberry cooking contest; recently renovated
library and senior center; and a historic train engine
in Central Park. Just east of the city is the popular
boating and recreation destination, Cooper Creek
Reservoir.

WILBUR
Unincorporated town
Nine miles north of Roseburg, the town was
home to the Methodist Umpqua Academy. Named
for pioneer preacher James H. Wilbur, the town
was established in 1853. Wilbur came to Oregon
via South America’s Cape Horn in 1847, and was
instrumental in establishing several educational
institutions including the Umpqua Academy,
which taught most of the noted politicians, busi-
nessmen, doctors and lawyers of southern Ore-
gon’s early days.

Unincorporated town
This town just north of Roseburg once served
as the county seat until Roseburg took the honor.
Its major landmark is the Booth Bridge, which
was built in 1924 to connect the banks of the
North Umpqua River. The bridge recently under-
went a $9.9-million widening project. The bridge
was closed for nine months; it reopened in March
2008.
The town is also home to Umpqua Community
College, an accredited school that offers a wide
range of studies and disciplines and seasonal
activities, including the summer musical and an
outdoor swimming pool.

Yoncalla is located in a valley about 30 miles
north of Roseburg off I-5. The town was settled
by the Applegate brothers, who established an
alternative to the Oregon Trail.
Jesse Applegate, whose home bordered the
ancestral terrain of Douglas County’s Kalapuya
Indians, named the area after their word for a
large bald mountain located to the northwest of
town. It is widely held the Kalapuyas called it
“home of the eagles” because the birds made their
nests and reared their young on the butte.
Today, the town’s entertainment includes the
Why Not Bar & Grill, a library and a handful of
cafes and restaurants.

WESTERN DOUGLAS COUNTY
ELKTON
Population: 200 (City of Elkton official Web site,
Sept. 17, 2009)
The town, named in 1850 for its proximity to Elk
Creek, is located about 27 miles west of Sutherlin on
Highway 138. One of the earliest areas in Douglas
County to be settled by Europeans, it is the site of Fort
Umpqua, one of several Hudson’s Bay Co. fur trading
establishments. Asign posted on the west side of the
highway features a composite of the post sketched in
1841 by Lt. George Simmons of the U.S. South Seas
and Surveying Expedition.
Areplica of the fort was recently constructed at the
Elkton Community Education Center, one of the city’s
crown jewels. The Center also has a small amphithe-
ater, a butterfly pavilion that attracts migratory butter-
flies and a garden with native Oregon plants. Another
new addition to the town is the Alfred S. Tyson Park,
located at 640 River Road, Elkton. It is complete with
boat ramp, picnic tables and public restrooms.
Elkton also features a general store, several restau-
rants and four wineries. Of special interest: Arlene’s,
famous for its logger burgers; Tomaselli’s Pastry Mill
and Cafe, known for its bakery items; Man Bites Dog,
a drive-up eatery that serves Chicago-style hot dogs;
Brandborg Winery and River’s Edge Winery are with-
in Elkton city limits; Bradley’s Winery and Anindor’s
Winery are just outside of town.
River’s Edge Winery specializes in Pinot Noir wines
grown in LIVE certified and sustainable conditions,
which focuses on erosion prevention and minimal
environmental impact. This winery has also recently
installed solar panels, and now requires only one-third
of its electricity from a local provider.

GARDINER
Unincorporated town
The tiny community located just north of Reedsport
on Highway 101 was once a logging and mill town.
Historic homes and a small, hillside cemetery hint at
its rich history. It was in Gardiner that the Jedediah
Smith expedition was attacked by the Lower Umpqua
Indians in 1828, with deadly results.
Originally called Gardiner City the town was
named for a Boston merchant whose trade ship was
wrecked in 1850 at the mouth of the Umpqua. The
goods and ship timbers were salvaged and moved 9
miles upstream, where the first building was con-
structed to house the trade goods.
The site served as a headquarters for the Umpqua
customs district in 1851, with Colin Wilson as col-
lector. Some years later, the Gardiner Mill Company
continued the growth of the area with a new sawmill
and town lots.
About three miles north of Reedsport, off Highway
101, a landmark is dedicated to the Gardiner Mill Store
and pays homage to a business that played an impor-
tant role in the lives of the people living on the coast
for many years. The building was razed in 1974.

Located west of Sutherlin on Highway 138 on the
main stem of the Umpqua River, the area was named
for brothers Lyman and Adna Kellogg. The pair’s resi-
dence was a stop for freighters hauling from Scotts-
burg to the mines in southern Oregon who needed
overnight accommodations. Previously, the area is

LOON LAKE
Unincorporated town
Located roughly 18 miles west of Elkton and 15
miles east-southeast of Reedsport, the lake was discov-
ered by an exploring expedition in 1852. It is about .5
mile wide and two miles long. Parts of it are more than
200 feet deep. The lake was originally formed hun-

REEDSPORT
Population: 5,000
In the heart of the Oregon Dunes Recreation Area
on Highway 101, Reedsport is near the mouth of the
Umpqua River. It was named in 1919 after pioneer,
prominent businessman and state lawmaker Alfred W.
Reed.
The Umpqua Discovery Center offers information
on the pioneer and logging history of the central coast,
as well as the three American Indian tribes that origi-
nally lived there. The Umpqua River Bridge is one of
several beautiful landmarks along the coast. The
2,213-foot structure has a center swing span that con-
nects Bolon Island and the south bank of the Umpqua.
Built between 1934 and 1936 as part of the state’s
coastal highway system, it also has four arches in addi-
tion to a concrete viaduct.
Reedsport offers a wide variety of cuisine. The most
impressive part of the city is perhaps its accessibility to
dunes that serve the recreational needs of a wide vari-
ety of users, including hikers, photographers and off-
road vehicle enthusiasts. Whale watching, the annual
Oregon Dune Mushers Mail Run, fireworks on the
Fourth of July and other festivals are held throughout
the year.

Unincorporated town
The small town, located about 8 miles west of
Sutherlin, is home to a general store, post office,
and the Henry Winery. One of the most historical-
ly significant locations in the county, the town of
Umpqua is named for its proximity to the
Umpqua River. It is also presumed to be the loca-
tion of the first Fort Umpqua, a fur trading station
for Hudson’s Bay Co., constructed in the 1830s.
Umpqua City was established in 1850, on the east
side of the river near its mouth.

Population: 488 (2000 Census estimate)
Located just south of Reedsport on Highway 101
at the mouth of the Umpqua River. The tiny town
built beside Salmon Harbor is home to the coast’s
largest sport fishing fleet. The Lower Umpqua
landmark located on the south side of the Umpqua
River in the western section of Salmon Harbor was
a Douglas County bicentennial project. The land-
mark documents the history of this pioneer settle-
ment.
Umpqua Lighthouse State Park is located less
than a mile from the harbor. The 65-foot tower con-
tains a distinctive lens which emits a red and white
flash. The lighthouse and adjacent museum are

AZALEA
Unincorporated town
Found in the Cow Creek Valley, about 36 miles
south of Roseburg, the town is named for the abun-
dance of azaleas that grow there. In 1912 Thomas
Towns built the Azalea General Store, first known as
the Canyon Pass Hotel. In 1914 the Azalea Post
Office was established, and in 1932 the Grange Hall
was built near Quines Creek. Several historic struc-
tures, including the Mynatt pioneer house and the
Gilham School, were lost in the 1964 flood. Today,
the pastoral area offers a general store, bed and
breakfast and in the Quines Creek area, the
renowned Heaven on Earth Restaurant.

CANYONVILLE
Population: 1,730 (July 2008 estimate, Popula-

Construction of the Canyonville United Methodist
Church began in 1868. The church is the last remain-
ing public structure built while Samuel Marks and
Hyman Wollenberg owned the town’s grist mill and
dry goods store. They donated three lots to the
church when they purchased the original town site.
Eight signs with historic information have been
placed on a kiosk in downtown Canyonville’s city
park, which has undergone cosmetic improvements
and has a new stage. The signs tell the story of the
Applegate Trail emigrants and record how some of
the first white settlers met the Cow Creek Band of
Umpqua Tribe of Indians at the site.
Today, Canyonville is home to the Seven Feathers
Hotel & Casino Resort and the Canyonville Christ-
ian Academy, as well as antique stores and eateries,
including Promise Natural Foods & Bakery and the
Canyonville Café.
Each summer, the community gathers for its annu-

GLENDALE
Population: 955 (July 2008 estimate, Population
Research Center at Portland State University)
In the early 1850s settlers began to spill into the
Cow Creek watershed, but it wasn’t until the 1880s
that the Glendale townsite was plotted after the rail-
road was extended from Roseburg. The town was
originally called Julia for settler Julia Abraham. A
dispute over ownership resulted in the name change.
The origin of the name Glendale is unclear, but lore
suggests a resident from the Scottish glens may have
had a hand in it. The town’s first sawmill was con-
structed in 1882 by Sol Abraham, who supplied tim-
ber for railroad construction.
Today the rural community boasts restaurants, a
gas station, a grocery store and the Village Inn Tav-
ern & Restaurant, which celebrates the community’s
milling past with a giant saw blade protruding from
its side.

EASTERN DOUGLAS COUNTY
DIAMOND LAKE
Eighty miles from Roseburg, the lake was not
named for its shape or translucence but for John Dia-
mond, who discovered it while standing atop the
summit of Diamond Peak in 1852. Considered one
of the most important mountain lakes in Oregon, it is
between Mount Bailey and Mount Thielsen at an ele-
vation of 5,182 feet. Today, the area offers a lodge,
motel, cabins, a store, restaurant and lounge. Agas
station and pizza parlor are located nearby. Recre-
ational activities include inner-tubing, snow-cat and
cross-country skiing, snowmobile riding and fishing.
DRY CREEK
Unincorporated town
Best known for nearby Illahee Flats, a large mead-
ow where Umpqua, Modoc, Kalapuya and Klamath
Indians met to gamble, trade and race horses. The
Dry Creek Store at Milepost 46 on Highway 138 is
the last chance for travelers to get gasoline and
snacks before reaching Diamond Lake.
GLIDE
Unincorporated town
Population: 1,690 (2000 Census estimate)
About 16 miles east of Roseburg, the area was
named by the town’s first postmaster, Virginia Laird,
in 1890, after she heard her son singing, “The river

IDLEYLD PARK
Unincorporated town
Just east of Glide on Highway 138, the town start-
ed as the Tioga post office before being renamed
Hoaglin. An Oregon State Highway Division
employee in the early 1900s claimed the final name
came after a resident built an amusement hall and
named it after a place he’d been in California called
Idyllwild. Today, beaming brides can buy vintage
wedding gowns at the Idleyld Lodge and Resort or
eat savory tri-tip at the Idleyld Trading Post. Tourists
and locals can also obtain fishing bait, groceries, gas
or liquor at the trading post.

STEAMBOAT
Unincorporated town
The name was allegedly born after a mining pro-
moter ‘salted’ an area creek with gold dust, a prac-
tice called steamboating. The Steamboat Inn is 38
miles from Roseburg on Highway 138, and is open
from late spring through the fall. Its restaurant offers
gourmet cuisine and often features some of the finest
chefs in the Pacific Northwest.

honor earned by those Realtors
®
who not only have a high-level of sales, but
also adhere to the ethical standards set by the club. In 2008 each of these
Agents closed a minimum of $3.7 million in sales to qualify. To ensure that
you get the highest level of real estate service, be sure to contact a Circle of
Success broker.
HUNTING/FISHING
bring success.
Anglers should check sport angling regulations
to determine fishing gear restrictions.
Cutthroat trout are found throughout the entire
Umpqua Basin. The average size of the resident
adult is 6 to 8 inches, while those cutthroat that
migrate to the ocean and then return upriver aver-
age 16 inches.
The uppermost section of the North Umpqua
and Lemolo and Toketee reservoirs are home to
brown trout. The average size of an adult brown is
10 to 14 inches, but some grow into the 20-inch
range.
A good population of brook trout exists in the
Clearwater River, a tributary of the upper North
Umpqua River, near Toketee. Thirteen high lakes
are stocked with brook trout and provide fish in
the 8- to 12-inch range.
The best concentration of smallmouth bass is
in the main Umpqua River from Elkton to the forks
of the North and South Umpqua, and from the
lower South Umpqua near Roseburg to
Canyonville.
The fish’s average size is 7-10 inches. Small-
mouth bass live near rock structures and ledges,
which provide protection.
Largemouth bass are concentrated in numer-
ous ponds and valley lakes and reservoirs or in
such secondary habitats as sloughs off the main
Umpqua. These fish average over 2 pounds in the
district. There are very few upland ponds without
largemouth bass.
All local reservoirs have good numbers of bass
for warm water anglers.
Striped bass roam continuously from fresh
water to salt water and back in the main Umpqua
and lower Smith River. Striper fishing is best dur-
ing the spring months.
Shad are an excellent sport fish with light gear,
small spinners, jigs and flies providing the most
success. The main fishery for sport fishermen is
