HIPAA, the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996, covers a number of regulatory issues, including standardization of health, financial, an d administrative records. Portability means that patients will not lose health c are coverage when moving from one health care plan to another. One of the most important functions of HIPAA regulations is the establishment of privacy standards for patient health information. HIPAA privacy regulations cov er not only health care providers, but also health plans and health care clearin ghouses, including billing plans. HIPAA regulations limit the disclosure of info rmation, and require that only the minimum amount of information needed is discl osed. Improper disclosure of health care information can lead to hefty fines and , in cases of deliberate misuse, can result in imprisonment for up to 10 years. Protected information includes names, addresses, employer information, telephone and fax numbers, email addresses, names and addresses of the patient's relative s, medical record numbers, Social Security numbers, fingerprints, photos, or oth er information that may identify a patient. About the Company: Based in New Hampshire, PainCare places a high priority on HI PAA compliance, and has implemented a comprehensive compliance program that incl udes HIPAA, as well as medical ethics, online security, and a number of other is sues.
