Student Property Boasts a “No Party” Policy and Lowest Rates
Of all the selling points to publicize, one student property advertises a “quiet environment” and a “No Party” Policy.

Hello Wildcat Parents & Family Members, On behalf of the UA Parent & Family Programs Staff and the Parents & Family Association I am excited to share the Spring 2013 Edition of the Parent & Family Magazine! You’re receiving this magazine because you are one of our valued Parents Plus Members or you have made a generous donation to support the goals of the UA Parents & Family Association. I thank you for your support! The Freshman Fee Fund has given us a Grant this year to ensure that parents of all current freshmen also receive this magazine. In addition, parents of new students are also receiving this issue as a complimentary welcome to the Wildcat Family. I am always amazed at how quickly the Spring Semester goes by. Current students have the opportunity to enjoy some of our rich spring traditions and events including March Madness (Congratulations to Men’s Basketball who advanced to the Sweet 16), Spring Fling, Softball and Baseball. UA Campus members are also very excited about the 2013 Spring Commencement Ceremony which will be the first event held in our newly renovated Arizona Stadium. UA Graduates along with their parents and family members will be treated to a very special Wildcat experience on May 10! I love this time of year as it gives me an opportunity to get out of the office to meet parents during our New Student/Parent Orientation Programs. At our last meeting, we were asked for and provided our input for the functional capability that parents and families need in UAEssentials. We are certain that when available, you’ll be very proud of this University initiative. Additionally, we have been able to provide position papers to the Arizona Legislature on issues affecting the UA. Among those issues: resources for the University and prohibiting guns on campus. At our February board meeting, we were fortunate to receive updates from our legislative liaison to the Arizona legislature and provide input. We were also able to hear from and provide comment to the University Provost, Dr. Andrew Comrie, on the University of Arizona Strategic Plan.

One Family Helping to Make a Difference
Continued from page 9 help can be the difference between failing and succeeding in college, or in worst case scenarios, between life and death. While students can be referred for help, or agree to seek help on their own, even at the extremely modest fees charged for counseling at the Counseling and Psych Services (CAPS) unit of Campus Health, cost is still the main deterrent to seeking help for some students. To address this, in 2010, the Lindens dedicated an initial $5,000 in funds to create the CAPS Linden

Counseling Assistance Fund. As funds are still limited, criteria for receiving this support are very strict. Only the most desperate students can now be served…students with no insurance, no family support and often lacking money to pay for more than rent and food. Priority is given to students who are at risk for suicide or other harm, or whose mental health issues are making it difficult or impossible to remain in school successfully. Support is currently limited to a maximum of $150-250 per student, which can cover 6-10 counseling sessions at CAPS. Many students who receive the help need even fewer sessions to get back on track. Our goal — and that of the Lindens — is to ensure that ANY student in need of and motivated to get such help can do so. To date, the fund has provided counseling

to 66 students. To continue these efforts, we need the support of other parents who can remember or recognize that timely counseling intervention, even brief, can really make a difference. Parents can enjoy guided tours of campus during New Student Orientation By, Stefanie Basij, Assistant Director, Enrollment Services Welcome to the Wildcat family! The next few months will be busy planning with your student their upcoming transition to the University of Arizona, and key to that process is New Student Orientation. New Student Orientation is the time in which your son or daughter will get their first chance to connect with the UA community as a student. They will meet with their academic advisor, talk with current students, check in with campus resources, and walk away ready for the first day of class. In short, orientation is the time at which your student outlines their path to becoming a Wildcat for Life. There are a lot of things to do in order to be ready for your student’s New Student Orientation program, and you may be thinking, ‘We need to put a list together to make sure we don’t miss anything’, know that UA has you covered with the Next Steps Center (nextsteps.arizona. edu). The Next Steps Center is where your student will go to pay their enrollment fee and register for an orientation program. Additionally, the Next Steps Center allows students to change their major up to seven business days before their scheduled orientation program and is the means by which they can complete the necessary academic procedures to be ready for orientation. It is imperative that students complete their Math, Second Language, and Writing placement before attending their orientation program, and the only way to do so is via Next Steps. Please make sure your student checks in on their Next Steps Center on a regular basis so they are prepared to attend orientation. While New Student Orientation is for your student, it’s also for you. The UA offers a parent orientation program that provides tips on how you can assist your son or daughter throughout their UA experience, giving you the tools you need to continue to support your student, no matter how close, or far from home they may be. During the parent orientation experience you will receive a calendar with important dates and campus resources, hear from your student’s academic college, learn about support resources, like the Parent & Family Association, and are able to work with your student to complete important university business. Registration for the New Student Orientation parent program is completed as a part of your student’s orientation reservation via the Next Steps Center. By Karina Salazar The Parent & Family Association Having a child start college is an important transition for the entire family, so the University of Arizona plans special parent and family events during the start of every academic year. While your student settles into their Residence Hall, purchases their textbooks, and prepares for the first day of classes next fall, we hope that parents will experience and enjoy all of the great campus events and amenities offered in August 2013. Here’s a look ahead at the events scheduled for the start of the 2013-2014 academic year.

Wildcat Family Conference

The University of Arizona is putting together a conference just for you. While your student is at UA Clicks, stop by the Student Union Memorial Center to sit in on a variety of sessions designed to introduce you to campus resources. Campus participants include: leadership programs, academic advising, Parent & Family Association, Campus Health, UAPD, and many more. We are also providing a break room and lounge with snacks and computer terminals. The Wildcat Family conference is a great opportunity to network with other parents who are proud to be a part of the Wildcat Family! Math Placement for Incoming Students
By Tina S. Moore Math Placement Coordinator Math placement is an important part of student success at UA. The overall purpose of our placement process is to determine, based on a student’s background and current demonstrated ability, which Math course may be appropriate. Although placement into a course does not guarantee a passing grade, our experience has shown us that the Math Placement Test (ALEKS) may be the clearest indicator of success in our courses. Important information about the UA ALEKS Online Math Placement Test is available through the Next Steps Center at nextsteps.arizona.edu, and on the Math Placement Website at math.arizona.edu/ placement/mpt. Incoming students access the test through the Next Steps Center. Current students test through the UA Testing Office. All incoming freshman students who plan on taking a UA math course are asked to take the UA Math Placement Test, even students with college math credits. How can you help? Here are some important reminders and information for incoming students: ▷ Read about the test and math placement. There is important information that students wish they would have known about, like what the “I don’t know” button means, how to retest, which test to take, etc. ▷ There is no practice test, but students can practice. The first attempt at the test is online and should be taken as if it is a proctored in-person examination. Placement tests are designed to determine what a student knows on his or her own, without any outside materials or assistance that may artificially increase a student’s score. Students do not have to take the highest course that they place into. They can discuss options with a math advisor. Taking a course beyond a

It is important for students to make an honest

and unassisted attempt at the test. About a third of incoming students place into a review course, Math 100AX or Math 100. These courses are designed to help prepare students for the content and expectations of college level math courses. Students with AP, IB, CLEP, and dual enrollment math credits should test. See a math advisor at orientation to review your options. College Math courses are different from high school courses and it is difficult for some students to make the transition. More is expected, more material is covered in less time, students have to seek their own resources for extra help, and most of the learning is done by the student outside of class. It is important for students to think about these differences and create a plan for success in college level courses.

Family Weekend 2013 is on its way!
By Megan Forecki Program Coordinator, ASUA Hello Wildcat Families! Planning is well under way for next year’s Family Weekend! We hope that you are as excited as we are to announce that Family Weekend 2013 will be held Friday, Oct. 18-Sunday, Oct. 20, 2013. Last year’s Family Weekend included activities such as Sailesh the Hypnotist, the football tailgate BBQ, a Wildcat carnival, and Stargazing at Steward Observatory. Many campus organizations such as Fraternity and Sorority Programs hosted events throughout the weekend as well. Family Weekend 2013 is going to be even bigger and better than last year so don’t miss out. There is sure to be something that interests each of your family members! Arizona Baseball Coach’s Hall of Fame Career

By Blair Willis & Athletics Communication Services It was never a childhood dream for Andy Lopez to become a baseball coach. In fact, as he admits, his coaching career began simply because he needed a job after receiving his degree from UCLA in 1975. A team captain and starting shortstop for the Bruins, Lopez was later selected

by the Detroit Tigers in the Major League Baseball Draft. Instead of playing professional baseball, Lopez opted to finish his studies in Westwood, complete his degree and begin preparing himself for a career. At the time, he did not realize that career would be in baseball. Lopez caught on as an assistant coach at L.A. Harbor Community College, his junior college alma mater. Two years later, a

full-time job opportunity presented itself: a teaching and baseball coaching job at Mira Costa High School in Manhattan Beach, Calif. It was there where Lopez’s career as a baseball coach took off. The man who was never going to be a baseball coach led Mira Costa to five successful seasons on the diamond, and California State University, Dominguez Hills, soon came calling. Lopez guided Dominguez Hills to the 1987 Division II College World Series and, two years later, Pepperdine University hired him for his first Division I coaching opportunity. At Pepperdine, Lopez led the Waves to the College World Series in Omaha, Neb., where they captured the 1992 national championship. It was that season in which Lopez won his first national coach of the year award and became a household name in the college coaching ranks. The University of Florida pursued Lopez and hired him in 1995 to raise the program’s profile. Lopez did that and more, winning a pair of Southeastern Conference crowns and two trips to the College World Series. His 1996 club finished third nationally and he was named national coach of the year for the second time. After sevens season in Gainesville, Lopez’s next career stop was in Tucson where, in 2002, he inherited one of the most successful programs in college baseball history. However, Arizona had appeared in the NCAA Tournament just one time in the previous eight seasons and had not earned a trip to the College World Series since 1986. Continued from page 21 lenge, Lopez took on the task of rebuilding the Arizona program. In just his second season, he had the Wildcats back to an NCAA Regional and, in his third year, led the school back to the College World Series. In the coming years, Lopez coached the Wildcats to consecutive 40-win seasons in 2007 and 2008, and finished one win shy of another Omaha trip in 2008. In 2010, Lopez won his 1,000th game as a collegiate coach and did so against rival Arizona State University. That season also proved to be the foundation of one of the greatest teams in school history. Bolstered by a group of talented freshmen, the 2010 Wildcats qualified for an NCAA Regional. A year later, they nearly won an NCAA Regional title at Texas A&M, finishing one victory short. Then in 2012, the Wildcats won a share of the Pac-12 Championship and were awarded to host NCAA Regional competition in Tucson for the first time since 1992. The Wildcats swept through the Tucson Regional and won both games against St. John’s in the Tucson Super Regional to earn the school’s 16th all-time trip to the College World Series. In Omaha, Arizona never trailed in five games as the school captured its fourth national championship, but first since 1986. Lopez was named the national coach of the year and he became one of two coaches in NCAA history to win a national title at two different schools. Now, in 31 seasons as a college head coach, Lopez is a two-time national champion, a three-time national coach of the year and has taken three schools to the College World Series five times. Earlier this season, he won his 1,100th game at the college level. All of this from a guy who never dreamed of being a baseball coach.

by Samantha Barry Do you ever wonder where your Student IT Fee goes? You can see it at work on the UA campus every day through the 24/7 IT Support Center and the Microsoft® Campus Agreement. Surveys conducted by the Information Technology Student Advisory Board (ITSAB) consistently show that 24/7 access to tech support and expanding the free student software available are the highest IT priorities for the majority of UA students. The 24/7 IT Support Center provides the UA community, including students, faculty, and staff, with personal computing help 24 hours a day, 7 days a week through phone, live chat, and in-person visits. All inquiries are handled by UA staff and student workers who know the university’s networks and systems. Your Student IT Fee at Work…
Continued from page 25 The 24/7 helps with a wide range of computing issues, from internet connection and password problems to difficulties with software and hardware. Any of these can be stressful to the customer coming in. Robbie MacPherson, IT Manager for the 24/7 IT Support Center, says that the main goal of the center revolves around customer service. She states, “We want to help our customers resolve their issues quickly, while making their experience as pleasant and stress-free as possible.” Another goal of the 24/7 is to help customers prevent problems in the future. Andres Irigoyen-Au, the floor manager at the 24/7, says, “We not only want to help them resolve their issue, but also provide a service that is centered around educational repair, helping them learn how to prevent the same thing from happening again.” In the first two weeks of the Spring 2013 semester, the 24/7 helped over 1,000 walkin customers. For the 2011-12 fiscal year, the center took almost 52,000 calls. Nine out of 10 customers are repeat users. The students themselves push the needs of the technical infrastructure on campus and therefore the skills needed at the center. When students arrive with the latest mobile device or computer on the market the university has to be ready to support that new technology. The 24/7 is there to help. Another recent benefit of the IT Student Fee is the upgrade of the Microsoft® Campus Agreement (MCA). The student licenses covered under the MCA enable UA students to download one copy of the current version of Microsoft Office and one copy of Microsoft Windows upgrade at no charge. Students are also eligible to download new product releases and upgrades and can use the available free tutorials for the programs. More information on IT resources for students is available at uits.arizona.edu/ studentservices. Our students expect the UA IT community to be current and provide the help they need with their personal computing devices. The 24/7 IT Support Center and the MCA are meeting those expectations.

By Brian Seastone, Commander and Manager of Emergency Preparedness The UAlert emergency text messaging system is the most timely and efficient way to alert the University of Arizona community of a critical incident affecting the safety, security or operation of the UA. Administered by the UA Campus Emergency Response Team (UACERT), UAlert is activated when there is a significant emergency or dangerous situation involving an immediate threat to the health or safety of students or employees occurring on campus. The University of Arizona determines and employs communication methods appropriate to the situation to notify the affected university community immediately. Confirmation of significant emergencies will require direct investigation by appropriate University personnel. Taking into account the safety of the community, UA determines the content of notification and initiates the appropriate elements of the emergency notification system, unless the notification will, in the professional judgment of responsible authorities, compromise efforts to assist victims or to contain, respond to, or otherwise mitigate the emergency. For all campus law enforcement issues, the UA Police Department (UAPD) is primarily responsible for confirming a significant emergency or dangerous public safety situation on campus through victim, witness, and/or officer observations. Upon confirmation, the UAPD supervisor contacts a Commander or Chief of Police, who has the primary responsibility to prepare and issue campus law enforcement emergency notifications. For incidents affecting the College of Medicine–Phoenix campus, the Coordinator of Facilities Management may activate UAlert for emergency and non-law enforcement emergency notification for that campus. For incidents affecting UA South, the Dean may activate UAlert for emergency and non-law enforcement emergency notification for that campus. For other emergencies (non-law enforcement)—including but not limited to hazardous materials releases, utility failures, computer systems/telecommunications failures, and hazardous weather affecting the UA campus—other departments at the UA (including but not limited to Risk Management and Safety, Facilities Management, and University Information Technology Services) may also confirm a significant emergency. Confirming departments report the non-law enforcement emergency to the UACERT Chair, UAPD, or Manager of Emergency Preparedness, who have the primary responsibility to prepare and issue non-law enforcement emergency notifications. ▷ UAlert is activated in cases of: Violent activity, including: —Active shooter —Immediate threat to the UA community, including off-campus events Hazards, including: —Major fires —Hazardous material leaks or spills (with a threat to health and safety) Health issues such as infectious diseases ( following consultation with UACERT) Major disruptions to university activity, including: —Building closures expected to last more than two (2) hours —Severe weather —Power outages Other: Any unforeseen emergency or situation that dictates the issuance of an alert Enroll — it’s free! There’s a trust factor.” Once a student arrives here on campus the UA, like every university, has a suite of support services geared toward enhancing student success in the classroom, and ensuring a smooth and comfortable transition into college social life. What the UA has that other campuses do not is a student built, properly vetted, and totally comprehensive scholarship matching database. Students log in, create their profile and in 20 minutes or so are matched with scholarships that they are eligible for, and that are presently taking applications. The impact of Scholarship Universe has already been felt as UA students in Fall 2012 brought in over $450,000.00 more national scholarship award dollars than they did in Fall 2011. Scholarship Universe has been effective in its mission to make UA students more competitive for national scholarships, better equipped for success in any scholarship applicant pool, and overall more educated and savvy consumers in the scholarship market. Beginning this year students can look forward to seeing more and more internal UA departmental and college specific scholarships. Scholarship Universe is becoming a onestop shop and online resource for all of their scholarship needs and questions, and UA students and families can take pride in knowing that their university supports and invests in their success.
