Kendall Miller Pathfinder Essay (Communications) 9, October 2010

The Definition of a Pathfinder is one who discovers a new course or way, especially through unexplored regions. Jupiter High School’s Pathfinder Awards are received by students who strive for what it takes to lead the way though undiscovered paths. The Communications industry is rapidly growing while ever changing and, with this Award, could take me to my goals and beyond. Over the past few years, I have based my life and strength upon my courage. At the young age of ten, I had lost my mother in a car accident. My mother was my rock and the glue holding my family together. After losing her, I suddenly felt weakened with the fear of never getting back up; Though, from a loss, one can only grow stronger, a philosophy I learned from my older sister. From hanging prayer flags in the Himalayas and protesting against hunger in Washington D.C, to pursuing a strong career in Journalism, my sister took on the role of my lost inspiration. Since my loss, I have become my own person; an individual capable of new experiences and helping others deal with identifiable situations. From my hardship a strength emerged that I never dreamt of holding. Emerson once said, “We acquire the strength we have overcome.” Persevering through high school and becoming a true leader has resulted from that newfound strength. Whether it be writing down every lasting experience, reading among the most influential pieces of literature, appreciating the mood of music, or simply walking through a museum, everyone embodies a unique craft. Art drives the expression of emotions and ideas throughout

the world and is, to most, the embodiment of true beauty. Writing is my art and my unique craft. Creative writing is a skill that has flourished and became a true passion of mine throughout the years. Forming an entirely new world from words alone, to me, is an amazing art containing no boundaries. Writing has created an outlet for me to express what I have been through and have conquered in life. From my passion and skill for writing, birthed a new interest in journalism. After spending restless evenings willingly printing in-depth stories in time for deadlines, becoming Editor-In-Chief of Jupiter High School’s yearbook is one among my proudest accomplishments. Leading a driven staff, dedicated to capturing memories while cutting it close to deadlines, is a stressful and time consuming task, yet lovable all the same. Being Editor has taught me what it means to be a true leader and has enabled me to realize my capability of reaching extreme career heights in Journalism. From the hardest time in my life, a certain drive has grown within me, resulting in countless hours spent after school, a never ending thirst for knowledge, and finding out what it takes to be a true leader. With the motivation and inspiration from the words of my Yearbook Adviser, I have created amazing opportunities and have opened new doors for myself in Journalism. My position as Editor-In-Chief of Jupiter High School’s yearbook has tested my initiative and dedication to a hard working staff and producing a publication viewed by over 3,000 students. The foundation of my character has been built upon the strength I had to uncover to overcome tragedy, and the courage I have acquired along the way. I believe that from determination comes great things, and I am eager to see what my future holds. To be a receive the Pathfinder award for Communications means to hold within the skill, drive, and character of a true Warrior. Jupiter High School is a community built solely on the values of a leader, and I remain proud to call it my second home. I hold true to these values in

my life, as they assist me in old and new experiences. I believe that my courage, passion, and determination define me as an upcoming Pathfinder Award Recipient, and, with that honor, could take me to new undiscovered heights.
