SUMMER 2012

The new 911 Carrera 4S Cabriolet

A pivotal year for Porsche

As we prepare to say goodbye to 2012 it’s worth reflecting on the many great advances made by Porsche. The launch of exciting and ground-breaking new versions of iconic models has been a real highlight for us all at PCM and there is genuine excitement at the prospect of new models and innovation in 2013.
Early in the year the new Porsche 911 Carrera (991 series) was introduced to the world, and it has been received with unbridled enthusiasm by motoring writers and Porsche owners. Recent additions to the 991 series model range include the Carrera 4 options and we can expect to see favourites in the 911 range introduced in 2013. As the new Porsche 911 Carrera and Carrera S heralded worldwide praise, so too the all-new Porsche Boxster was welcomed with universal high praise, and has been very popular amongst our PCM customers. Both the new 911 and Boxster ranges have made significant generational changes. And Porsche hasn’t stopped there. You will read in this issue about the all new Cayenne models and the revolutionary design featured in the Panamera Sport Turismo which showcases Porsche’s commitment to advanced hybrid technology matched to sports performance and benchmark dynamics. With a new, lighter, quicker and more fuel-efficient Cayman pencilled in for the first half of 2013 these are truly exciting times for Porsche owners, spoilt for choice with innovative and class-leading performance options. We’ve again placed a deliberate focus on our extended PCM ‘family’, both internally with features on many people that form part of Australia’s best Porsche team, and externally, with fascinating features on our PCM customers who reveal their passion for the Porsche brand experience and insights into their personal lives and careers. We warmly welcome contributions from many more of our loyal customers in 2013. On behalf of our terrific PCM team I’d like to thank you all for your continued support, hope yours is a safe and enjoyable holiday period and wish you every success in 2013.

Performance, dynamics and efficiency benefits to the fore
Lighter, faster, more agile 911 Carrera 4 models – Porsche Intelligent Performance – to the power of 4.

The all new Porsche Carrera 4 is here. And it comes with a raft of technological and dynamic benefits along with vastly improved fuel efficiency too.

It blends the excellent performance and efficiency of the new generation Carrera model with the dynamic benefits of the latest version of Porsche’s active all-wheel drive system PTM (Porsche Traction Management). The typical Porsche all-wheel drive guarantees maximum vehicle dynamics on a wide variety of road surfaces, and in all weather conditions. For those of us in Melbourne, that can sometimes mean all weather conditions in the space of a single day!

As expected, the new all-wheel drive 911 is available in four variants – as the 911 Carrera 4 and 911 4S in both Coupé and Cabriolet body styles. Their lightweight body design, suspension, engines and gearboxes are shared with the rear-wheeled 911s, the only exceptions being modifications related to the all-wheel drive system and wider rear bodies that have traditionally distinguished Porsche’s all-wheel drive Carrera range. The extended rear wheel arches combine to produce

a body that is 44mm wider at the rear, and the rear tyres are also 10mm wider. The traditional red light band that connects the two tail lights has also taken on a new look. In further great news, the new Carrera 4 consumes significantly less fuel than its predecessor (up to 16% in fact) despite higher levels of engine and driving performance. Being up to 65 kg lighter is another attractive consideration. The new C4 models feature a 7-speed gearbox as standard with the Porsche PDK gearbox available as an option. With the PDK option the 911 Carrera 4 Coupé with 257 kW sprints from zero to 100 km/h in 4.5 seconds whilst the Cabriolet completes the sprint in 4.7 seconds. Top speeds are respectively 285 km/h and 282 km/h. Fuel consumption with the PDK option is 8.6 L/100 kms for the Coupé and 8.7 L/100 kms for the Cabriolet. As a comparison, the new Carrera 4S models each have a 3.8-litre rearmounted engine producing 294 kW; enabling acceleration times to 100 km/h in 4.1 seconds and 4.3 seconds for the Coupé and Cabriolet. Top speeds are respectively 299 km/h and 296 km/h, whilst fuel

consumption is 9.1 L/100 kms and 9.2 L/100 kms for the S versions. What else is new? There are quite a few new features worth discussing. Let’s start with the instrument cluster, where a new menu informs the driver how the PTM all-wheel drive is currently distributing engine power. Also being introduced is an optional Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) to the range, which controls distance to traffic ahead and vehicle speed. When ordered with PDK, the ACC system adds Porsche Active Safe (PAS), a safety function designed to help prevent front-end collisions. A new sliding glass sunroof is now offered for the 911 Carrera Coupé, whilst the optional Sport Chrono pack offers an automatic double-declutch function during downshifts when in Sport Plus mode. The doubledeclutch ‘blips the engine’ during these downshifts, adding even greater levels of exhilaration to the already seductive sporty driving character of the Porsche Carrera range. The all-new Carrera 4 is a welcome addition to the 991 range and promises to be every bit as popular as the successful 997 model it replaces.

Boxster tops with motoring writers
August 2012 “The clutch is dumkopf-proof and the Boxster just oozes into the traffic like a croc sliding into a river.” “This is clearly the best Boxster yet.” “(The) Latest offering of the niche-making Boxster is an absolute cracker.”

August 2012

The all-new Boxster 981 Series has been a huge hit with Australia’s motoring writers. Here’s a little of what they have to say.

“I’m here to tell you the 981 treats Australian roads with derision. It absorbed every hit and wallow and dip and crest and hole and bang that Route 31 could throw at it, with seemingly endless amounts of grip, but more importantly, vivid feedback through all touchpoints and scarcely believable body control” “The way it hunkers down and dictates terms to the road is good enough to have you actually yelling with appreciation…” “To try to pick faults with it would be lunacy.” “The styling is now one of the car’s best features.” “There are hints of Carrera GT in the side scoops and overall proportions, too, which is no bad thing.”

Motor

Top Gear Australia
July 2012 “The last Boxster was a joy to drive, but this is better in almost every way.” “New suspension and wide tyres that would rather die than relinquish their grip on the road also contribute to what can only be described as sublime handling.”

The Australian
July 2012 “At the same time, it hasn’t lost one of it’s most endearing qualities: its forgiving nature. So it’s more substantial, more polished and has more ability than before.” “…this time it can beat its rivals on more than just dynamics. It’s the one I’d pick.”

The new Boxster has been embraced by PCM’s Porsche owners like never before. If you haven’t already had a test drive, why not book one soon and experience the exhilaration shared by everyone fortunate enough to have already enjoyed the driving experience of the all-new Porsche Boxster.

McQueen, Le Mans & Porsche
Steve McQueen once briefly owned a Slate Grey 1970 Porsche 911S that he also drove in the opening minutes of the classic 1971 film, Le Mans. He also owned a less well equipped 1969 Porsche 911S, but it was the Slate Gray model that caused a stir in 2011 when it sold at auction for a record $1.375 million. Built to highest Porsche specifications of the day, loaded with factory options including leather interior (rare for 1970), factory air-conditioning and with just over 110,000 miles on the clock, Steve McQueen’s 911S had passed through just four owners, (including McQueen) and was a prime example of a well preserved and serviced vehicle. The engine and transmission were original, with all numbers matching and the highly prized Le Mans 911S was free of rust and accident damage. The car was delivered to the set of Le Mans and driven by the iconic actor throughout the production of the movie. He already owned a 1969 model, with more modest specifications and also in his favourite Slate Grey, which he chose to retain after parting with his Le Mans featured model. In the 1970 12 Hours of Sebring race, McQueen was the co-driver of a Porsche 908/02 that won it’s class and narrowly missed winning overall by a mere 23 seconds. Curiously McQueen drove in this race with a cast on his left foot, courtesy of a motorcycle accident two weeks earlier. Indeed, McQueen was adept riding motorcycles also, and performed many of his own stunts on both motorbikes and driving cars in his movies. In the 1970 24 hour Le Mans race, Steve McQueen wanted to drive a Porsche 917 with Jackie Stewart but nervous movie producers baulked at the idea, fearing he may have jeopardised filming of Le Mans, the movie.

Tag Heuer celebrates the magic of calibre 1887 – Tag Heuer’s in house movement – with club 360 and Porsche Centre Melbourne VIP’s.
On August 15th, the TAG Heuer Melbourne Boutique hosted a VIP event in celebration of the Calibre 1887 movement and new 43mm rose gold Carrera Calibre 1887 collection. Porsche Australia VIPs and TAG Heuer Club 360 Members were treated to a special watchmaking master class where TAG Heuer master watchmaker, Shalen Gokoolparsadh presented the Calibre 1887 movement, demonstrating the magic and beauty of their in-house manufactured “engine”. TAG Heuer also took the opportunity to celebrate its partnership with the Porsche Carrera Cup Australia series, with the TAG Heuer Porsche 911 GT3 cup car prominently positioned on the red carpet outside the Melbourne Boutique. An exclusive door prize was offered by each brand, with Porsche Australia donating an instructional Drive Day at their facility on the Gold Coast, including flights and accommodation, while TAG Heuer donated the “ultimate drive kit” from its lifestyle accessories collection. In a perfect result, a Porsche VIP won the TAG Heuer ultimate drive kit and a TAG Heuer Club 360 member won the Porsche Drive Day. The evening was a great success in connecting a new audience to the magic of the Calibre 1887 movement and the Porsche Carrera Cup Australia Series.

Tell us about your journey to the PCM service department?

These young service technicians have travelled far and wide before landing at PCM

We interviewed three PCM service department technicians who have all had a passion for cars their whole lives. They talk to us about their journey to Australia and being part of the PCM service department.
Australia, so I found out about the VISA, shipped my tools over and ended up getting a job here 13 months ago. How does this role compare to others that you have had? I think the guys that work here especially those who are working in the workshop are more passionate about their work. Especially from the length of time a lot of the guys have been working here. Is there a different skill set when dealing with Porsches? I have noticed that it’s quite common for people to say, ‘I am prepping my

John Subert, originally from California has been at PCM for just over a year now. After travelling the world, he has moved to Australia to continue with his passion.

I have been around cars my whole life. My dad was an engineer and always had his own cars, so we would fix cars together. He kind of used that as a way to keep me out of trouble. We restored an old muscle car, a 77 El Camino Super Sport, when I was 15 or 16. That got me into the trade. After high school I went to vocational school. I spent 2 years there and then came back to California and started working in a garage there. After 3 years I saved up some money and travelled around Europe, North Africa and Asia. I wanted to then come to

car for the race day’, so there is a different mindset as a lot of the cars are built for performance. You need to carry that when you are servicing the cars – you have to have more of performance-orientated skill set. Are there any particular vehicles you love working on? I like old 911s from 84 to the late 80s. I have always liked those cars, I want to own one some day. The craftsmanship is so intricate, so well designed and complex. There’s a place for everything, and everything is really purpose built. They are just very well designed machines. Have you got any basic technical advice for our readers? (laughing) Coming to a full stop when transferring from reverse to drive, that’s a pretty good one. As well as the most basic things – check your tyre pressure and check your engine oil every few months. Michael Dixon moved over to Australia to escape the extreme Canadian winter weather and found himself making one phone call at the right time. Tell us about your journey to the PCM service department? I have a similar back story in that I grew up around cars. My dad was on the retail side of things but was mechanically inclined. I have vivid memories of being 6 years old, crawling around old Chryslers and helping him out. We restored a lot of old cars growing up in Canada. My family then immigrated to the United States in 96 when I was 18, where I went to trade school in California. The trade school had a program where Porsche would recruit to their factory training program if your grades and attendance was good enough, and I was doing well enough so I submitted an application. I got accepted into the Porsche school, so I moved to Atlanta Georgia to attend the school. That

course enabled me to get a job at a Porsche dealership in Los Angeles. I ended up moving back to Canada, then after one winter I had to get out of there – It was a month straight of 30 below 0. My girlfriend had been to Australia and was aware of the working VISA, so I made one call to Flavio and a year or so later I moved to Australia to work at PCM! How does this role compare to others that you have had? I think staff are a lot more loyal to PCM because they really take care of their people. Why is it so important to have great service technicians at PCM? Owners are expecting a very high level of service at PCM. You are dealing with a vehicle that is worth a significant amount of money, and the owners have a certain amount of success that they have attained to own that vehicle. You have to hold yourself to their standard. Their Porsche vehicles are their baby, their pride and joy, so you have to treat it like that.

Torque Summer Edition

11

In saying this, there is passion on both sides, passion with the owners as well as passion in the workshop. So we tend to be very particular with how a customer’s vehicle is treated and how accurate the repairs are. Are there any particular vehicles you love working on? I had never been into Porsches because I grew up with American muscle cars and I didn’t really have any knowledge of European cars. But one day when I was at school, a friend of mine who was an automotive journalist, picked me up in a brand new 993 Turbo and took me for a road test. I was absolutely blown away by the vehicle! And I remember thinking; if I ever get to work on something like this one day I would love that. And that was what sparked the idea to work at Porsche. As the years have gone on, and I have worked on them longer, I have found myself a little more drawn to the vintage vehicles than I ever was – particular the early 356s. Have you got any basic technical advice for our readers? As a helpful hint, one thing they were huge on in North America was tyre pressures. They found that tyre pressure is correlated to the fuel economy and they recommended to check your tyre pressures every few months.

How does this role compare to others that you have had? In Abu Dhabi it’s a very rushed place, it’s very busy and we have to move faster. But here we have more time to put in more quality and people are doing their job properly. Thilanga Perera has been at PCM since May this year, but he feels very privileged to be working at PCM. Tell us about your journey to the PCM service department? I started the trade as an apprentice in Sri Lanka in 2004. The first year of applied training I worked with BMW and then second year I worked with Porsche in Sri Lanka. After finishing trade school I went to Abu Dhabi and started working at Porsche there. I was there for three years. During that period I applied to work at Porsche Centre Melbourne and luckily Flavio was happy with my experience and gave me the opportunity to work with him. My aunty and uncle live in Australia, so they gave me the chance to come here. Are there any particular vehicles you love working on? I never had a chance to work with the old cars, like 993, but when I was in Abu Dhabi I usually worked with Cayennes and sometimes the sports cars, 996s and 997s, so to me, the Cayennes are the best cars to work on! Have you got any basic technical advice for our readers? I agree with John and Michael, tyre pressures are probably the most important thing to check regularly.

An intelligent look forward
Sporty, functional, efficient: Panamera Sport Turismo is going places… fast.
Porsche is presenting the Panamera Sport Turismo concept car to show how amazingly intelligent and efficient drive technology might look in the design language of tomorrow. Combining Porsche performance with everyday practicality, the Sport Turismo unites the next generation hybrid drive with new, evolutionary design concepts for a sporty body.
The body concept of the Panamera Sport Turismo provides a window to possible Porsche sports cars of tomorrow. As an example, there are no conventional exterior mirrors. In their place, the Sport Turismo has two cameras mounted in the side air outlets whose images are shown on displays in the cabin. The completely reshaped rear body features rear lights in LED technology and the tail-light panel housing the Porsche badge is sculpted in three dimensions. The Sport Turismo is 1990 mm wide,
14 Torque Summer Edition

a low 1401 mm high and 4950 mm long. Its direction indicators and sidelights are integrated in C-shaped lighting units – known as C-blades – mounted in the large air inlets at the front end. Together with four-point LED headlights in an innovative design, they define the front end appearance of this striking concept car. The rear overhangs are much shorter than the current Panamera and an adaptive carbon rear spoiler (with improved downforce) forms the roof termination. The drive technology of the Panamera

Sport Turismo completes the next developmental step towards the plugin hybrid. The concept car will be charged from the electrical power grid, and with its 306 kW of peak power has been designed for even higher performance levels. In pure electric mode it can be driven up to a speed of 130 km/h, and can cover distances in excess of 30 km. Impressive fuel economy of less than 3.5 L/100km and CO2 emissions below 82 g/km are reflective of Porsche’s commitment to energy efficient development.

The drive technology of the Panamera Sport Turismo completes the next developmental step towards the plug-in hybrid.
The drive system of the Panamera Sport Turismo is an advanced development of the parallel full hybrid used in current Porsche hybrids. The new electric motor produces about 70 kW (95 hp), which is around twice that of today’s Porsche hybrid drive, while the supercharged three-litre V6 engine still manages to produce 245 kW (333 hp). The concept car can be expected to accelerate from zero to 100 km/h in less than six seconds. The electric power pack of the Sport Turismo e-hybrid consists of a lithiumion battery whose performance is several times that of the nickel-hydride battery currently used in production. Its energy storage capacity and high peak power enable faster acceleration, longer electric driving range and higher speeds when driving without the internal combustion engine. The default operating mode of the e-hybrid prioritises all-electric driving, but the driver may easily deactivate this setting via a button on the steering wheel. When the car is being operated in hybrid mode the driver can select the e-charge mode to intensify charging of the high-voltage battery. This is especially useful when the driving route includes highway and city driving. As a plug-in hybrid, the fluid-cooled lithium-ion battery is not only charged while driving; it can be externally charged within 2.5 hours (depending on the power supply) via a charging interface on the vehicle. Porsche systematically considered all aspects of the car’s plug-in system, utilising a universal charger (AV) that is wall mounted in a home garage and has a standardised charging plug. Apart from performance and technology advances, the concept car is produced in the new Liquid Metal Blue colour that provides a surface that resembles liquid metal and also highlights the car’s contours and design lines more distinctly. The wheels in dual-spoke design have a bi-colour look, and the brake callipers are painted Acid Green. The milled aluminium battery housing is mounted under the boot floor, which is made of electrochromatic glass and reveals a view of the energy source illuminated in Acid green – at the press of a button. Internally the Sport Turismo is a forward-looking interpretation of purist sports car thinking, a minimalist approach with a large central TFT colour display is positioned in front of the driver. It is used to call up and display any requisite vehicle information – from tachometer to driving data or navigation. Monitors either side of this display show images from the “exterior mirror” cameras. Two additional displays in tube form provide information on the hybridspecific driving states.

Key specifications for the Porsche Panamera Sport Turismo concept car:
Drive system: Parallel full hybrid; 3-litre V6 engine, charged; hybrid module with electric motor and disengagement clutch; rear-wheel drive Power: 245 kW (333 hp) V6 engine approx. 70 kW (95 hp) hybrid module 306 kW (416 hp) (combined peak power) Suspension: Double wishbone front suspension; electromechanical power steering; multi-link rear suspension Energy supply: Lithium-ion battery with 9.4 kWh capacity and plug-in charging system compatible with electrical power grid Performance: Top speed in pure electric mode 130 km/h approx. Power, performance and efficiency
The all-new Cayenne S Diesel with biturbo V8

The most powerful diesel model on the market is about to reach our shores, in the guise of the Cayenne S Diesel.
Sporting a powerful 4.2-litre eightcylinder engine with biturbo charging the new Cayenne produces 382 hp (281 kW) and offers a substantial maximum torque of 850 Nm. This drives the new model to excellent values in dynamic performance and efficiency. The new top of the range diesel completes the sprint from zero to 100 km in a more than respectable 5.7 seconds, on its way to a top speed of 252 km/h. But this significant increase in power doesn’t come at the cost of fuel economy, with its NEDC

fuel consumption measured at a relatively miserly 8.3 litres per 100 km. Auto start/stop functionality helps, and the Porsche Cayenne S Diesel is the only V8 diesel SUV to offer this feature. And the all-new V8 has that special character that only Porsche V8s have. When combined PTM active all wheel drive the new diesel model produces the driving qualities of a rear-wheel drive vehicle, together with all the handling and precision benefits of the all-wheel drive system. The optional Porsche Torque Vectoring (PTV) adds further to the high levels of dynamic sports performance. For those wanting to use the diesel’s superior towing capacity, you’ll be pleased to know the Cayenne S Diesel has a maximum towing capacity of

3.5 metric tonnes, yet still has ample reserves of power when working at this capacity. And those looking for a longdistance specialist can rest assured in the knowledge that the new Cayenne can be driven approximately 1,200 km without refuelling when fitted with a standard 100-litre fuel tank. From an exterior perspective, the new top diesel model is an uncompromising Cayenne S as well, and it displays the typical sporty visual features of Porsche V8 vehicles in the Cayenne range. The brake system, for example, has been sized to handle the Cayenne’s power output and is identified by distinctive silver brake callipers. Expect local deliveries in the first half of 2013.

RESIDENT ExPERT MICHAEL BARkER

Brake fluid – why you should change it regularly
Porsche recommends a brake fluid change every two years under normal driving conditions. Brake fluids are glycol based products and these products tend to be “hydrophilic” which means they “attract” water. The water comes from microscopic pores in rubber hoses, seals or general exposure to the air. After about 12 months, brake fluid on an average vehicle contains about 2% water. While this does not seem to be of great concern, even a low percentage of moisture causes a significant drop in the boiling temperature of the brake fluid. For example, a “DOT 4” brake fluid has a minimum boiling point standard of about 230 Celsius. With 4% moisture this boiling point will be lowered by about 50%! The effect of this is that the water boils before the glycol and then turns into vapour pockets in the brake lines. In some cases, when the pressure is applied to your brake pedal, the pedal may go all the way to the floor without actually applying the brakes. Please consider this the next time our service team recommends a brake fluid change!
If you would like further advice on break fluid and what to do, please phone to arrange a time. Michael Barker 03 9473 0948.
