Follow These Seven Steps to Ensure Safety and Proper Procedure:
1. Stay calm. Check yourself for injuries. If you’re OK, check your passengers and those in the other vehicle(s). If no one is injured, proceed to #3. 2. If there has been an injury, call 911 for help and do not move the injured person unless it is necessary for safety purposes. Help the injured person stay calm until emergency personnel arrives. 3. Do not leave the scene of the accident until all matters are resolved, including removing injured persons from the scene, exchanging insurance information, and talking to police regarding the accident. Do not move your vehicle unless a police officer or emergency personnel tells you to, or if the position of your vehicle puts you or others in danger. 4. Protect yourself from post-accident legal action by giving only the necessary and requested information to police and other parties involved in the accident. Do not discuss anything unrelated to the accident or offer unsolicited information about your mental or physical condition. 5. Gather all the information you need from the other driver(s) and/or witness(es) for insurance and police report purposes. You may want to use the form included in this brochure to be certain you take down all necessary facts. 6. If your vehicle cannot be driven, call a towing company to recover your vehicle.
