Linguistics was not my field in Grad school. For "political" reasons I was coerced into doing an applied linguistics dissertation among inmates at Rikers Island prison on Black English. It was a very educational experience being in the prison among New York City youth. The field work helped me later when I entered into ancient & extinct Algonquian languages of southern New England.Thank you Columbia! Thank you Prof. Bill Stewart. Thank you Tom Bever.
