The Phoenix In the Beginning was the Darkness which is Chaos. Great indeed it was, and te rrible, for its emptiness was like nothing ever seen or imagined, and the horrors of its creations are legion. Yet in the end the Darkness defeated itself, for within t he very might and darkness of the great Chaos lay the very means of its eventual destr uction. It is one of the principles of being, that no single thing may exist witho ut its opposite, and the opposite of Darkness is Light. Thus, when the great Chaos gr ew upon the lands and Darkness filled the universe to its very borders, there grew forth within it a pressure to change. Weak it was, at first, and yet the Darkness did not quench but seemed instead merely to feed the fire of its will, and thus it grew and grew until it admitted no bounds, no holds or barriers, and the wish that it contained broke free. In the Beginning was the Light which is Life. Born of Chaos, living within th e very bosom of the great Darkness of the Void, still it burned and the Light of its Flame was great and terrible indeed. Back and out it fought and forced the Darkness and the great Chaos, outwards and away, and still it grew and flared up in a great flam e, fell and terrible in its young and unquenchable beauty. And the Light of its s triving reached even unto the Far Gardens of the Gods where dwelt and slept the gre at God Ariel, and it awoke him from his timeless slumber. Thus was broken the hold of Darkness and Chaos upon the World and the great universe, for the God Ariel brought forth his very Soul and the great and burning Light of his very being flamed up in a great ball of fire and the power o f that burning shook the very Earth to its core. Thus was cleansed the World of the abominations of Darkness, except for such few as found time and occasion t o hide themselved from the great Power of Ariel by burrowing deep down into the bosom of the dark and cold earth sheltering them. But the Flame of the Chaos out it, sensed the great Light of great notice of the Power of the uth and sheer life of the world ir new burned on unconcerned. And it perceived the world ab Ariel, but being of Light and Air itself it took no great God. Instead it marvelled at the beauty and yo beneath its gaze, and seeing the first birds in the

flight to great the dawn of the newborn day, its very heart and soul cried out to be able to join them in their flights. And thus, cloaking its immortal form in the manner of the beings it perceived around it, it took the form of a great and fair bird of its own creation, and it went amongst the beings of the lands and the forests and dwelled amongst them.
