Pieces of a broken friendship Anneka was abandoned by her Mum and Dad as a baby, she had lived all her life in an orphanage, she never got on well with the other children, she felt she had no one until she met John. She and John had been the best of friends since the day they met in year 1, but one day it got out of hand and the friendship fell apart… It seemed like forever since they last spoke, Anneka awoke on a Saturday morning it was cold, extremely cold. She heard the howls of the distant wind the sun had just began to rise. She picked up a photo in a decorated frame she made herself (which she kept beside her bed) of her and him together below the picture it said the words “best friends till the end”. “Those were the good old days when we were the best of friends” she thought. A tear trickled down her cheek which dripped onto the picture, it had been weeks in fact almost months since they last spoke, “Oh John why don’t you speak to me anymore? Why can’t we still be friends?” countless questions such as this she asked but who too? She felt a cold biting on her heart, a deep heaviness deep down. She remembered what she had said to him that day; this is the very words she had said. “I hate you and I never want to see your face again”. And he had replied “Fine we are now officially no longer friends, from this day we will never speak again”, he walked off after that. And never spoke a word to her since that day, during that duration they just drew further and further apart till they totally stayed clear of each other. Also all though she or neither him had feelings for each other there were rumours going round about them being more than just friends, it got difficult for them. She looked out the window she saw and heard a bolt of lightning that forcefully struck and destroyed a tree; “that poor tree fell apart just like our friendship” she thought. She felt this great regret building up deep inside herself. It was difficult to make anyone her friend since that day; she even stopped talking to her close female friends. “I can’t live without you by my side” she told herself again and again clutching the picture. I enjoyed the time we shared oh the days that we were together; I treasured every moment we shared, even when we were just walking to each other’s classes” she thought She remembered one stormy night during the Autumn half term when she stayed at his house for tea; they’d sat together by the fire sharing a hot chocolate with marshmallows and he told her ghost stories. She remembered the days when they just high-fived for no reason. The two most memorable things he did for her was the day he hugged her in the middle of the street when she was crying and whispered in her ear “Don’t cry mate, you got me and we are best friends for ever” Also the day he stuck up for her when those three big kids were calling her names, he did those two good deeds for her out of risk of being teased! And what had she done for him? It seemed like she had barely helped him once, all though he didn’t seem to show signs of him needing her help. There was another picture by her bed it pictured them as 6 year olds at the park spontaneously kicking the autumn leaves, and doing a competition to see who could make the biggest leaf pile, which in the end just resulted in them rolling in the leaves laughing, and high-fiving each other, She remembered in year 2 on a sunny afternoon sitting in his garden, helping him to read his book, for his homework, for you see John had dyslexia, and in return he helped her with her Maths a few months later. She remembered that weekend during the summer holidays when his parents had let him take her to the beach with him. The sun was lovely they had ice-cream and it had melted and dripped all over

themselves, they just laughed and high-fived each other. John’s Dad had bought the dingy along, they both sat in it together while he pulled them along, then they paddled together and splashed each other and started a water fight. Oh what a laugh they had that day. Even as they grew up and became teenagers they remained the best of friends, all they way through they never developed any feelings towards each other, apart from feelings of friendship. They arranged social events with each other regularly, and they had come to each other’s birthday parties. They had been there for each other all the way. Then she was reminded of how far apart from each other they were now, and how the friendship will remain broken for an eternity, she just burst into tears at thatpoint. Having him around made her feel belonged in the world, “What hurts the most was the fact we were so close, now it seems as though we are from different planets” she sobbed. “I never realised how much you meant to me, untilI lost you. We could never bear to leave each other’s side well that has been proved wrong”. She could never live without him by her side, he was her brother, (well not genetically anyway). He was everything that she ever wanted within a friend; he met all her expectations of and qualities of a best friend. “You were my best friend forever” she thought once more. But alas, now they were both so apart but she knew at that point he will always be by her side. They may have been apart in distance but most certainly not in heart. She choked back her tears as sensations of warmth shook her. Just thinking of him was enough to brighten her up. Then she wandered if he was thinking of her too She felt a number of emotions running through every single fibre in her body. She felt so snug at that moment, despite the faded memories of him and her. She closed her eyes so tight and pictured him by her side As she was remembering all the sweet memories a bright light descended before her, the weather was all ready beginning to brighten up, just like her feelings. As the image of him faded away slowly, being blown away by the wind with the morning dew, she remembered that he will always be in her heart forever, and she felt that she will always be in his heart, no matter the distance between them because true friendship exists anywhere. She just remembered the happy times they spent and didn’t let the sad times ruin it, she knew it will all get better in time, and she will make new friends. You know what after a few months she made new friends, and after a while although she always remembered him and kept him in her heart, she felt she no longer needed him. One fine day she met him again by the light of the sun along the rainbow bridge they immediately recognized each other and shouted out each other’s names. They ran up and hugged now they knew their friendship will never end, and they will always be by each other’s side. By Anneka J
