How to decide if a cat is right for you
NORTH AMERICAN PRECIS SYNDICATE
Cats can be loving, loyal, feisty or fierce — and if you saw the hit movie “Puss In Boots,” then you know one cat can embody all those traits and more. Adopting a cat can be a “purrfectly” wonderful idea as long as you understand the commitment that comes along with it. Before bringing a cat home, consider these tips from Madeline Bernstein, president of the Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Los Angeles (spcaLA): n Evaluate your needs. Are you ready to make the commitment to a pet? Cats can live up to 18 years. On average, pet care costs about $400 a year. n Visit a pet adoption center. Don’t shop when you can adopt. Shelters have many cats to choose from and adoption saves lives. n Questions? Ask the staff. The shelter staff can often tell you the animal’s personality traits, likes, dislikes, temperament, breed, and activity level. Keep your options open. A pet doesn’t have to be a kitten to be a loyal companion. n Patience. Be patient. You may need to visit the adoption centers a few times before you find the cat that’s right for you. n Decide as a family. Does the cat get along with everyone and how does everyone get along with the cat? n You made a decision, now what? Here are some items you should have before bringing your new cat home: ID tag and breakaway collar, cat food, pet bowls (2), litter box (rule of thumb: one for each cat, plus one), litter and scooper, toys, treats, scratching post,

(Photo courtesy of Paramount Home Media Distribution) cat carrier (for vet trips/ emergencies) and a plan for veterinary care. n We love our new cat, but we’re having some issues. Don’t give up. The solution may only require a slight adjustment in behaviors. spcaLA has an Animal Behavior Hotline at (888) SPCALA-1, x260 to answer pet behavior questions. Even if you’re not quite ready to commit to a real cat, you can still enjoy how entertaining they can be by watching DreamWorks Animation’s “Puss In Boots,” which is now avail-

able on Blu-ray and DVD. This hilarious origin story of the notorious fighter, lover and outlaw tells the true tale of how Puss became a hero long before he met Shrek. Featuring the extraordinary Antonio Banderas as the voice of the irresistible and legendary cat, “Puss In Boots” boasts a sensational cast of voice talent including Salma Hayek, Zach Galifianakis, Billy Bob Thornton and Amy Sedaris. fun way to learn how entertaining cats can be is to watch the animated film “Puss In Boots,” about a legendary feline hero.

Many people have never heard of Essential Oils. I am referring to the use of Oil for medicinal purposes. Some of us remember from the Bible, a story about baby Jesus and the three wise men bringing Frankincense and Myrrh. The Bible also mentions the Balm of Gilead. So thousands of years again we know that these oils were used for healing. The Egyptians and Chinese used these oils at least 6000 years ago. Today there are hundreds of Essential Oils available for our therapeutic use. The Oils can be taken internally, but most of the time they are applied externally or simply inhaled. The oils contain many compounds that can be identified, isolated and studied. There are two theories about how they work. First, these individual components of the oils have antiinflammatory, anti-viral, anti-bacterial, and anti-cancer properties. When the oil is applied to the skin or inhaled, it is absorb and circulated through the body. The active ingredients then “do their thing” within the body, adjusting the chemistry based on its individual properties. The second theory has to do with resonant vibrational frequencies. Every atom, molecule, cell, tissue, organ, and the body as a whole has a resonant vibrational frequency associated with it. When there is disease within the body, there are changes in the resonant vibrational frequency. The changes can be at any level. This is actually the basis for the MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) that many of us are familiar with. The oils have the ability to bring the abnormal frequency back to normal through the Principle of Harmonics. All musical instruments are based on these Laws of Physics. This simply means that one thing that is vibrating can cause something else to vibrate at the same rate or frequency. As far as the oils are concerned, research has determined what oils can influence what frequencies within our bodies. We can then educate ourselves to know what oils can be used to reduce pain and inflammation, what oils can remove bacteria and viruses, what oils can change the vibrational frequency of tumors and cancers. Understanding this we realize there is a complete therapeutic system available to us, using the Essential Oils to help us improve our health. Put Your Health in Your Own Hands. Bob Huttinga PA-C. 989-352-6500.
