Getting your teen driver ready for the road
North AmericAN Precis syNdicAte
There’s good news for parents who have a teen who’s ready to begin driving. There are practical steps you can take to keep your teen safe when he or she hits the road. Not only is it important for your new driver to know how to be a safe and responsible driver, it’s equally as important to know the basics about the car itself and what to do in an emergency. Here are some tips: n Take the time to get to know your vehicle. Whether it’s brand new or a well-used family vehicle, have your teen take the time to review the owner’s manual. n Show your teen driver how to check the oil, transmission and steering fluids, and point out where the engine, battery, air filter and radiator are located, as well as the reservoirs to fill for the radiator and windshield washer. n Teens can be notoriously hard on vehicles when driving, and they don’t always adhere to good maintenance practices. Those are compelling reasons to upgrade to one of the new generation of motor oils. For instance, high-performance lubricant manufacturer Royal Purple formulates its synthetic motor oil to achieve extremely high oxidation stability. This allows for more miles between oil changes and provides an extra degree of protection against haphazard maintenance. Royal Purple’s lubricants have also been shown to improve fuel economy, which can

save you money on fuel. n The exterior of the vehicle is important, too. Make sure the headlights and taillights are all in working order. Check that the wiper blades are properly cleaning your windshield. Invest in a tire pressure gauge, which, in addition to the traditional pencil style, is now available in digital models. n In the event of an emergency, make sure your teen driver knows where the registration and insurance cards are kept. An easy-to-access place is the glove box. Glove box organizers or registration wallets are great ways to keep those important documents together. n While parents can’t control other drivers or situations that

teen drivers might encounter onM the road, they can at least pro-a vide the basic tools in a Roadside( Emergency Kit. Memberships top auto clubs and a GPS on a cellI phone can be helpful, but nott always accessible depending ont s where the incident occurs. Preassembled emergency kits are available for purchase, but even if you create your own kit, make sure you review with your teen how to use each item in it, such as roadside flares, a quart of oil, a small first aid kit, extra fuses, a flashlight, a multipurposeA tool that includes pliers, wire cut-w ters, pocketknife, bottle opener,y saw, screwdrivers and files, a tireo inflator, rags, a pen and paper,i and a help sign or white cloth top t signal for help.

Our pet this week goes by Bernice, and she’s the biggest of the big dogs, a St. Bernard. She’s just one of the many dogs and cats available for adoption at the Montcalm County Animal Shelter in Stanton. Bernice is about 3 years old, weighs around 100 lbs, and eats enough food for an army. She was brought into the shelter as a stray on June 14, and unless her owners come to claim her she’ll be available for adoption i i d l starting June 21. Bernice needs a large home with a large yard to roam around and play - no apartments for this dog! Her fur is brown/ black/white and her shelter ID# is 10/06/41. Many other dogs besides Bernice are available to be adopted, and plenty of cats too. Go online to for a full list of adoptable animals. There is a $40 adoption fee for dogs, $20 for cats, as well as a refundable spay/neuter deposit ($50 for dogs, $25 for cats) unless the animal is “fixed” already. New animals are brought into the shelter on a daily basis, so if the one you want is gone by the time you call, the Montcalm County Animal Shelter will do its best to find you a dog or cat that matches what you’re looking for. The Montcalm County Animal Shelter is open to the public Mon.-Fri. 12:30 pm to 5 pm, except Wed. 12:30 pm to 7 pm. Call (989) 831-7355 or (616) 225-7355 for more information.

Leaky Gut Syndrome

, t !

This is a condition that traditional medicine does not really recognize as legitimate. The underlying premise is that the “pores” in the lining of the small bowel become damaged and begin to allow large particles of partially digested food to enter the blood. When this happens your body begins to make antibodies against these “foreign” particles. This is the basis for food allergies and some of the auto-immune diseases that we experience. For example, casein is the protein in milk. It is a large protein molecule. To get nutritional value from this protein it has to be broken down into Amino Acids. When you drink the milk and it goes into the stomach. The Hydrochloric Acid in your stomach converts pepsinogen to pepsin and this enzyme (pepsin) begins to break down the casein into polypeptides. The polypeptides are moved into the duodenum (first portion of the small intestine). There enzymes from the pancreas (protease) break down the polypeptides into peptides and finally into amino acids. If the polypeptides or the peptides get absorbed into the blood, antibodies begin to form because these are not supposed to be there. Nasal congestion, post nasal drainage, headaches, Fibromyalgia, joint pain, irritable bowel, reflux, irritable bladder and many more symptoms can develop. The most common cause of Leaky Gut Syndrome is an over growth of yeast in the intestines. Reduce sugars and starches, take Probiotics, avoid antibiotics, avoid chlorine, avoid steroids, cortisone, and hormones, and use a bowel cleanse at least once per year. Then the lining of the bowel can return to normal, removing all the symptoms of the Leaky Gut Syndrome. Put Your Health in Your Own Hands. Bob Huttinga PA-C. 989-352-6500.

Nearly three quarters of a million pre-owned vehicles were destroyed during the Cash For Clunkers campaign. With lower bank rates and the economy on the best uprise in years, customers have turned to purchasing certified pre-owned vehicles to receive the most vehicle for their money. This, in turn, has caused a severe shortage of pre-owned vehicles nationwide. This has made it nearly impossible for Ed Koehn Ford to purchase high demand vehicles from the auction houses. We must restock our pre-owned inventory right now. If you have a pre-owned vehicle, regardless of condition, age, or amount owed, we need your trade in. We will also pay off your loan completely regardless of what’s owed on it. We are prepared to offer thousands above market trade in value on your trade. In order to take advantage of this unprecedented offer, you must bring this invitation to Ed Koehn Ford Lincoln Mercury during event hours. We promise: 1) A great selection of New and Quality Pre-Owned vehicles. 2) Great service and helpful sales staff. WE 3) Follow up after the event.
