Dippity Dog Cones & Franks opens in Lakeview
It’s finally here. After a year of planning, and a name change, owners David and Marcy Myers are ready to open the Lakeview ice cream and specialty hot dog cafe-style restaurant, Dippity Dog Cones and Franks, with their Grand Opening happening May 5 and 6. It’s been a whole year from the initial idea, but the Myers’s wanted to make sure that the new place was perfect. They also wanted to open at a good time of year ... and spring is always a good time for thinking about ice cream. Located at 337 S. Lincoln Ave., in downtown Lakeview, Dippity Dog Cones & Franks now resides where Myers Discount Flooring store was for many years. “We decided it was a good time to close our flooring store two years ago. The situation with the economy was bad. Not many people were thinking of purchasing new flooring, and after 25 years of installing floors, it was starting to get physically challenging,” David said. Marcy also is the owner and Broker of Your Team Realty in Lakeview. David and Marcy have four sons. Two of them, Keaton and Mason Myers, attend Lakeview Middle School. Dippity Dog Cones & Franks will offer soft serve, plus 16 flavors of hard ice cream, with two sugar-free and one dairy-free. They also will offer the shakes, flurries, floats, malts, sundaes and a delicious banana split. The specialty franks are “fabulous” and they also have a mouth-watering pork BBQ sandwich. “We will offer four specialty hot dogs: the Schnauzer Kraut, Chicago

May 19

June 16

Collie, Taco Chihuahua and the melt in your mouth, Chili Chow Chow. We plan on being recognized for the unique tastes of our chili dog sauce, BBQ and sour kraut,” Marcy said. Dippity Dog will be open year round. The menu will change slightly for the colder months of the year. Summer hours will be 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., Monday through Saturday, and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday, so far. If the demand is there for later hours, Dippity Dog will accommodate. They also will offer group discounts. “We want the teachers to bring in their students for a treat, as well as the sports teams. We want to make sure it is affordable for a group. We also plan on inviting Santa and some other holi-

day visitors over the year. We want everyone to watch the paper for upcoming coupons and daily specials.” David and Marcy added. “We appreciate the community for all their support and enthusiasm. It has definitely made this a fun adventure,” the Myers’s went on the say, “Also, a special thank you to our village manager of Lakeview, James Freed, for all his encouragement.” “We are so thankful to the community for their support and patience. We know a lot of you have been anxious for us to open our doors,” Marcy said. Be sure to call (989) 352-1212 and place your order, or visit Dippity Dog Cones & Franks downtown Lakeview.

How today’s businesswoman can do it all
NORTH AMERICAN PRECIS SYNDICATE
The estimated number of woman-owned businesses across the country is 8.1 million. Yet what’s really impressive is that many female business owners are also mothers, wives and heads of households. If you fall into this category or know someone who does, the following tips on balancing work and home life may come in handy: n Protect boundaries — If you find yourself checking your smartphone during dinner, you might need to set clearer boundaries between business ownership and family time. Separating work and family time will help you be more productive at both. n Stay in touch at school — Small-business owners rarely have time for volunteering in the classroom, but mothers can still be a part of their child’s educational experience. Something as simple as donating supplies shows you’re interested in your child’s classroom success. n Shift your schedule — Sixtythree percent of mothers say they want to be home when their kids leave for school and at the end of the day. To accommodate, try shifting your schedule and conducting nonurgent business after hours. Don’t be afraid to off-load work to others when feasible. n Organize work and home life — Make a list of your top three organizational challenges both at home and at work, and put a detailed plan together for overcoming the challenges. If time management is an issue, try creating a family calendar that lists everyone’s daily activities, including work schedules and family time. And avoid working so hard on your business that your home becomes chaotic. n Don’t let guilt get you down — A study from the Working Mother Research Institute found that more than half of mothers who work report feeling guilty about not spending enough time with their kids. Furthermore, small-business owners are notorious for working long or odd hours. Try not to be your own worst critic. Sometimes, being a mom has to take priority. Push back business issues to after hours if it’s possible. n Limit your time spent online — Many women spend hours a day online, for professional and personal reasons. But tasks such as managing a Facebook page or website can become a full-time job and significant source of stress. To free up some time for family, try Deluxe’s Web Solutions Package. The timesaving “do it for me” package bundles a number of services that help you achieve a professional online presence and help your business rank higher in search engines. n Seek more advice for managing your business — Deluxe, a growth engine for small businesses, offers products and services designed to streamline marketing for small-business owners. For additional tips and resources, visit www.deluxesmallbizblog.com or www.ProjectREV2012.com.

2009 DODGE JOURNEY

2003 CHEVROLET MONTE CARLO

About five years ago, Richard Boomer, a local resident started a newspaper called, “Lakeview Area News”. Unfortunately, a few years after, Mr. Boomer died. His family, the editor (Linda Huckins), and the will staff carried on with the paper until last week when the newspaper had to close. It is very interesting to observe the lifecycle of an entity such as the Lakeview Area News. Like a living thing, the newspaper was born, it came into existence, and it matured and then died. We are born, we mature, and then we pass. There is much debate about the afterlife and if there is a fore life. There are lively arguments about the concept of reincarnation, past lives, and genetic memory. There are reports of people recalling near-death experiences. There are people who nearly die, and did not recall anything. There are hundreds of traditions about what happens to us when we die. There is often a great deal of fear associated with dying and what is going to happen to us after we die. Over the years I have done a lot of work with hospice and people’s reaction to dying varies a great deal. Some fight to survive and some are ready and peacefully slip away. It is important to understand that we, like every living entity, have a lifecycle. We all are going to die. For one’s peace of mind and stress control, we must spend some time thinking about death. Perhaps we can read some books, counsel with a spiritual advisor, or attend some seminars. This way we can have some peace about what will happen. My belief is that after we die, part of this carries on. I think we are much like the newspaper. The physical newspaper, the Lakeview Area News, has died. But an e-mail version of the newspaper carries on. Have you noticed when someone dies, everything else carries on. The Earth continues to turn. The sun, the stars still shine. People who remain continue to live and go to their jobs and build new relationships. A part of us carries on in the hearts and minds of those that we love. And from time to time, the name of the person whose past is spoken. But I believe there is something more that exists. Mostly that belief has been developed by my patients and others who have had near-death experiences. The strength of that belief is what overcomes the fear of dying. Instead of fear, I feel an excited anticipation. It feels much like being ready to go on a trip. If you are experiencing fear of dying, it is very important to find peace with this. It is very stress producing and will make your life unpleasant. Seek some help, use some homeopathic remedies, do some reading, and seek some spiritual counsel. This way the rest of your life can be peaceful and joyful. Put Your Health in Your Own Hands. Bob Huttinga PA-C. 989-352-6500.

SCHOOLS OF CHOICE Section 105C: Any student who resides in a school district adjacent (a contiguous district located in another ISD) to the Mecosta-Osceola Intermediate School District may apply for acceptance to his/her school of choice. The five public school districts within the Mecosta-Osceola Intermediate School District accepting applications for enrollment under Schools of Choice Section 105C for the 2012-2013 school year are Big Rapids Public Schools, Chippewa Hills School District, Evart Public Schools, Morley Stanwood Community Schools and Reed City Area Public Schools. • Applications for Schools of Choice can be obtained at the school where the student wishes to attend. An application form must be completed for each student wishing to participate in the Schools of Choice Program. • The enrollment period for considering applications is through the fourth Friday in May (May 25, 2012). The space available in each participating district and the space available at each building determines the number of transfers allowed under Schools of Choice. At this time, the districts have open enrollment for all grades. Contact the district of your choice if you have questions concerning openings for a particular grade level.
