How to plumb a house
Hi I’m Raj, I’ve been working as a plumber in my town for 20 years. I’m going to help throughout this plumbing lesson, so that by the end of it you will be able to:  Explain the basic theory of plumbing  Demonstrate the correct use of tools and materials  Draw blueprints and estimate the costs of project. You will also be able to estimate the quantities of materials needed select a feasible water supply and waste water route.  Demonstrate basic principles such as welding, mixing concrete, hammering and even tiling.  Correctly and safely install plumbing in the toilet, bathroom and kitchen.  Repair leakages and carry out general maintenance of plumbing. Let’s start with a short introduction to plumbing:

Watch this PowerPoint: Link to ‘Introduction to Plumbing PPT’ Activity 1: Can you help Raj explain to this woman what plumbing is and why it is important.

Hi can I come and plumb your house?

I don’t want plumbing in my house, I don’t even know what it is!

Teacher: Ask you students what they think plumbing is. Individual: Write down what you think plumbing is.

Thanks for your help! Now let us start learning about the important planning process we must go through before we start plumbing.

Watch this PowerPoint: Link to Introduction to Plumbing part 2 Activity 2: In pairs calculate how much pipe is needed for your house. Then draw a scale drawing of the plan and one elevation. This plan is called the Blueprint and we will refer to it later on in this lesson. Once you have completed this we can move onto the next stage of plumbing. Before we do this we must check the plumbing checklist:

Hi can I come and plumb your house?

WHO
HOW
WHAT

Discuss plans continuously with other people involved (stakeholders) e.g. House owner, site supervisor etc. Discuss cost of project. How many toilets, bathrooms and kitchens do you need? What type of fittings do you need? E.g. Type of seat for toilet

DISCUSS PLANS WITH STAKEHOLDERS

Take detailed measurements of site and draw blue print

WHERE

Decide where to install fittings, positions of pipes and connections Decide and measure: a) Supply water route from tank/direct supply line to house and b) Route for wastewater to go to septic tank Total up total pipe and fittings needed and calculate cost of project by finalising a budget. Then buy the materials

WHEN

Set schedule for pipe cutting to avoid wastage and to maximise the utility of pipe lengths. Set schedule for when each task will be done and when it will be finished. Combine all tasks into one document and stick to deadlines if possible. Edit the schedule when it is appropriate/there are delays.
