It is hard to believe that the music world tragically lost its angel, late singer and actress, Aaliyah Dana Haughton, some nine years ago in a horrific plane crash in 2001. In some cases, the industry is still grieving. Affectionately known as “Baby Girl” by family, friends, and fans alike, Aaliyah was a multi-talented and gifted force to be reckoned with, selling over 32 million albums worldwide before sadly leaving this world at the age of 22. Warner Brothers Films will start filming a biopic based on Aaliyah’s life at the end of this month. The film will be directed by Bill Condon, the director behind the award-winning blockbuster, Dreamgirls. Canadian singer and former girlfriend of highly popular rapper Drake, Keshia Chanté (pictured below) is set to play the late singer. Chanté bares a striking resemblance to Aaliyah and has been vigorously studying every aspect of the star’s life. Society »

She has viewed hundreds of hours of video in order to emulate Aaliyah, from her dance moves to her sweet melodic vocals for the film. Chanté is even speaking with Aaliyah’s family members, in order to give the role the proper justice and accuracy in which it is due. In a recent statement regarding her role, Chanté stated:

“Aaliyah inspired me and an entire generation. She was stunning, effortless and was capable of so many things. This is a hard undertaking, I have big shoes to fill but I am committed, determined and will train to the very end to master this role. I want Aaliyah’s fans and admirers to be proud of this film and feel like it was the best interpretation possible of our baby girl. I refuse to disappoint.”

Known to be a somewhat mysterious and private young woman, the film has been reported to share a very deep and personal side of Aaliyah; even addressing the singer’s controversial and highly debated marriage to her then 27-year-old producer and mentor, R. Kelly, whom she wed when she was only 15.

A 1995 January issue of VIBE magazine published the couple’s marriage license, revealing that Aaliyah fabricated her age, claiming to be 18 in order for the two to elope in Chicago in 1994. The marriage was later annulled five months later, leading Aaliyah and R.Kelly to terminate their professional, musical, and personal relationship indefinitely. Aaliyah’s real life friends and colleagues will help with the film’s production and make appearances, including acclaimed choreographer Fatima Robinson, who worked with Aaliyah just hours before her untimely death. Robinson is also working with Chanté to help her replicate Aaliyah’s distinctive dance moves and style. Aaliyah’s longtime friends and musical family, Timbaland, Missy Elliot, and Ginuwine are also slated to contribute production and make appearances. Even the legendary and famous director, Hype Williams will aid in production and grace the screen, too. Williams directed Aaliyah’s music video for “Rock the Boat,” which was the last video she filmed before her tragic death on location in the Bahamas. The music video’s set will be reconstructed for the film which is just another indication of the importance of conveying perfect imitation of Aaliyah’s life.

The film is also reported to carry an impressive $80 million production budget and is set for a national release date for some time next year. At this time, it is unknown if Aaliyah’s boyfriend at the time of her death, co-founder of Rocafella Records and owner of multimedia compound and art gallery DD172, Damon Dash will partake in the film. Dash and Aaliyah had plans to wed. Without any doubt, the film is bound to be treasured by fans worldwide and will continue to allow the legacy of the late great, Aaliyah Dana Haughton to carry on and live on for many years to come. This better be good. Aaliyah deserves the best. Reading this just struck me with just how young Aaliyah was when she passed. I’m 22 now and I’ve loved Aaliyah since I was a little girl, so it’s just really strange to realize we are the same age. Still a ridiculously tragic event.

I’m VERY much undecided about this one. Like so many other young women, I grew up with Aaliyah (she was just a year older than me) and even interviewed her one month before her tragic passing. I pray they do her rare, amazing spirit and beauty justice in this film, but only time will tell. ~Boss Lady

The sheepskin boot that comes in a variety of colors, styles, and designs has been a staple upon the feet of many for the past few years. Even your favorite celebrity has been seen adorning the popular shoe. Love them or hate them, the UGG boot has been a mainstay in fashion, no matter the season. Once a local craze in Australia, the UGG boot travelled overseas and landed on the feet of Americans thanks to Oprah. The beloved talk show host and philanthropist spearheaded the boot’s popularity in the States in 2000 when she spent over $50,000 on 350 pairs for her staff and audience when featuring the shoes on her “Oprah’s Favorite Things” segment. Some would consider the UGG boot not aesthetically pleasing on the eye but now studies have shown that it is not pleasing upon one’s feet either. Doctors recently studied the famous boot and have found it to be dangerous for those who frequently wear them. Society » Money Over Education?

According to a study conducted by doctors at the British College of Osteopathic Medicine, the UGG boot can create moderate to severe podiatry problems when worn for a long period of time. This comfortable and soft boot can create harsh and painstaking troubles to one’s feet, back, and neck due to the lack of support the shoe provides. Recent studies have claimed that the shoes allow one’s feet to slide around too much which can lead to irreversible foot deformities. Dr. Michael O’Neil from the Society of Chiropodists and Podiatrists provided this expert testimony concerning the UGG boot:

Ouch! Frightening, to say the least. No word if these recent scientific studies are really a conspiracy to kill a fashion trend that just does not seem to be going away anytime soon. But nonetheless, if you happen to find someone mean muggin’ you, check their feet. If they’re rocking some UGGs, their mug may not be because of you. It might just be that the boots are being mean to their feet. Images: UGGAustralia.com/igotuggs.com Popularity: 1% Bookmark to:

Pharrell Williams, a native of Virginia and one half of the super production duo, The Neptunes, once said,” Wealth is of the heart and mind. Not of the pocket.” He could not be anymore right. Thousands made history in the DC, Maryland, and Virginia (DMV) area recently, wearing their hearts on their sleeves with open wallets in tow to be a part of one very special night, all in the name of helping the people of Haiti. The “DMV Helps Haiti Benefit Concert” took place at the historic 9:30 Club in Washington, DC Monday night, impressively raising over $30,000 for relief and rebuilding efforts for Haiti. The 9:30 Club donated its venue free of charge as its employees donated their wages and volunteered their time to help with the night. All proceeds collected from ticket, auction and drink sales, and service fees, went towards the relief efforts in Haiti. All proceeds specifically went to the Yéle Haiti Foundation, the non-profit organization of acclaimed singer and humanitarian Wyclef Jean, and to the Partners in Health Organization. The event started out as a simple tweet via the vastly popular site, Twitter and evolved into a massive night of hip hop, talent, and charity. The idea was birthed by young entrepreneur Yodit Gebreyes, and brought to fruition by public relations guru Candice Mackel and other noble young professionals. The concert had an extraordinary line-up featuring the best of emcees and singers representing the DMV area, along with some surprise guests. All those who performed and made appearances did so, free of charge. The momentous event showcased a one of a kind exhibit of DMV hip hop artistry and humanity, headlined by rap sensation Wale. It was delightfully hosted by Chris Cole of BET’s College Hill: South Beach as 93.9 WKYS’s DJ Alizay proved himself as the best DJ in the DMV as he manned the 1’s and 2’s throughout the night. The confident and dynamic Wale rocked his Nike boots, as he excitingly surpassed the original 15 minutes he was designated to headline, performing an entire set of favorites including “Nike Boots,” “Chillin,” “Let It Loose,” and “Pretty Girls.” He proudly embraced his DC musical roots performing with singer Weensey from the legendary DC go-go band, Backyard Band. Songstress Paula Campbell was the “First Lady” of the evening as she was the only female performer of the night. Campbell shared her beautiful voice, singing a few songs including her catchy “Hitlist,” written by Keri Hilson, and “Ain’t Nobody Stupid,” penned by R&B sensation Ne-Yo. The revolutionary emcee, Black Cobain showcased his powerful lyricism, reminding us he’s not a politician but a musician. Northeast DC’s Tabi Bonney literally put the audience in his pocket, performing hits such as “The Pocket,” “Beat Rock,” and “Rich Kids;” blowing everyone away with an electrifying performance featuring dance troupe, The Beat Ya Feet Kings of MTV’s America’s Next Dance Crew. R&B crooner Raheem DeVaughn made a surprise appearance, serenading our minds with socially conscious hits, such as his noteworthy, “Bulletproof.” DeVaughn also appeared alongside his fresh new artist, Phil Ade who is signed to his label 368 Music Group. Phil Ade performed his hit “Hollywood,” from his latest mixtape, Starting Off JV. Inner Loop Records’ very own K-Beta ripped the stage baring his heart and soul during his performance. He performed well-liked tracks such as “Surrender” and “K-Beta State of Mind.” He even blessed the crowd with the premiere of “Black Business,” from his newest mixtape, Inglorious Beta which drops April 1st. The energetic and vibrant “Mr. Lookie Looky,” DC Don Juan performed to utter pandemonium as ladies screamed at the top of their lungs to him professing his self-love via the very catchy ‘”Lookie Looky.” The super cool and hyper prolific emcee, XO of Studio43 performed a slew of his best on wax, including his newest club banger, “Take Home” featuring Raheem DeVaughn. Kingpen Slim rocked the crowd and beamed them up, performing tracks from his mixtape, The Beam Up such as “Phatter Than You” and “Get Money.” Nationally acclaimed radio host and entrepreneur Kenny Burns, Rev Yearwood of the Hip Hop Caucus, and numerous DMV politicians, made appearances and showed their support.

DrJays.com Live’s very own Madame C donated $1,200, purchasing a one of a kind painting done by Peekaso via the live auction portion of the concert. The painting was done during Wale’s performance. Many have argued that hip hop is dead; this may in fact not be the case. She might just be living in the DMV, alive and well. Nonetheless, Monday night’s “DMV Helps Haiti Benefit Concert” only proved that the power of hip hop is unwavering and her possibilities are endless. DrJays.com Live wants to commend the DMV and their impressive efforts. We commend all individuals who take the initiative to be agents for change and help to make our world a better place through creative mediums. Anyone can make a difference if they put their mind to it. More pictures from “DMV Helps Haiti Benefit Concert” can be seen here. Ladies and gentlemen, it may soon be time to take notes, class is in session. Music mogul, businessman and entrepreneur, Sean “Diddy” Combs has announced plans of starting a business school in New York, preferably in the Harlem-area. The lucrative businessman broke the news Monday night on CNN’s Anderson Cooper 360°, stating: “It’s more than just about business,” he said. “There’s more that I’m supposed to do, there’s more that I’m gonna do. I want to have an academy that’s known for building leaders. I feel that’s one of the things I can have an impact on. I want to take on more responsibility. I’m still honestly in search of how I can have the most positive effect that I can have.” Combs who began as an intern at Uptown Records in the early 90’s, worked his way to the top becoming a top executive at the label, producing hits for Mary J. Blige and Jodeci. He soon became one of today’s mainstays in the fashion, music, and media industry, acclaiming an estimated net worth of over $350 million. Combs plans to share his inside knowledge and experiences with aspiring young entrepreneurs who attend his business school. Sounds » Combs can include this latest venture to his impressive resume of accomplishments, which include being CEO and founder of Bad Boy Worldwide Entertainment Group, Sean John Clothing, spokesman and brand developer for Ciroc Vodka, restaurant owner of the popular upscale restaurant Justin’s, and various reality TV deals. With this newest project on his hands, it is clear that Combs abides by his well-known mantra that he, “can’t stop and won’t stop” making his mark in the industry. The music world is mourning the loss of a legend. Major news outlets reported late Wednesday night that legendary Grammy nominated R&B singer/songwriter, Teddy Pendergrass, passed away in Philadelphia where he was being hospitalized at Bryn Mawr Hospital. He was 59. Pendergrass had suffered from numerous medical complications since a devastating car accident in 1982, which left him paralyzed from the waist down and confined to a wheelchair.Pendergrass founded the Teddy Pendergrass Alliance, a non-profit organization invested in raising funds, support, and awareness for persons impacted by spinal cord injuries. Pendergrass rose to fame as the lead singer of Harold Marvin and the Blues Notes before embarking upon a successful solo career in the late 70’s, becoming the first Black male R&B singer in history to record five consecutive multi-platinum albums. Teddy Pendergrass was a master at making you consciously aware of social issues while allowing a little lovemaking on the side. His smooth and soulful vocals were distinctive as heard throughout his powerful love ballads and emotional testaments. Also affectionately known as “Teddy P” by his fans, Pendergrass had a string of hits in which he taught us about “Love TKO,” how to “Close the Door” and to “Turn Off the Lights.” But he also went beyond the bedroom with his music with inspirational hits like, “Joy,” “Love is the Power,” and “Wake Up Everybody.” Pendergrass greatly influenced many of today’s male R&B artists, including Jaheim, T-Pain, and Trey Songz, and his music has been sampled throughout R&B and hip-hop. Without any doubt, he will be Sounds » VIDEO: KiD CuDi’s “Soundtrack 2 My Life”

Congratulations are in order for America’s newest sweetheart and the country’s newest Miss America Pageant winner. Miss Virginia, Caressa Cameron, won the prestigious 2010 title of Miss America at the 89th Annual Miss America Pageant in Las Vegas Saturday night. The competition aired live on the cable network, TLC. The talented 22-year old senior broadcast journalism major of Virginia Commonwealth University blew the competition away with her voice as she sang a rendition of Beyoncé’s “Listen” from the 2006 film, Dreamgirls. Along with the renowned title, Cameron received a $50,000 scholarship, various endorsement deals, and the yearlong opportunity to travel across the nation representing the almost century old organization while raising awareness of her chosen platform, which is combating childhood obesity. Encouraging more play and less television viewing and video game playing, Cameron stated during the interview segment of the competition: “We need to get our kids back outside, playing with sticks in the street like I did when I was little. Expand your mind, go outside and get to see what this world is like.” In a gorgeous yellow gown, Cameron beat out 52 other beauty queens as she was crowned by last year’s 2009 Miss America winner, Katie Stam. Miss California Kristy Cavinder was the first runner-up, winning a scholarship of $25,000. Young women from all 50 states, including the District of

Several judges of the night included actress Vivica A. Fox and conservative commentator and radio host, Rush Limbaugh. The evening was hosted by actor Mario Lopez of the popular 80’s sitcom Save by the Bell and today’s wildly popular America’s Next Dance Crew. Cameron is not the first Black woman to be crowned Miss America; she is the eigth to wear the sash and crown within the competition’s history. The first Black woman to be crowned was actress and singer, Vanessa Williams who won the title in 1983. She later was stripped of her title after nude photos of her taken years before receiving the crown were published in Penthouse. The runner-up, Suzette Charles of New Jersey, also a Black woman, assumed Williams’ title. The most recent before Cameron’s win was Ericka Dunlap of Florida who won the title in 2004. Cameron is a native of Fredericksburg, VA and has dreams of one day becoming a news anchor. Actress, comedian and talk show host, Mo’Nique has another award to add to her trophy case. After winning the Critic’s Choice Award for Best Supporting Actress just a few days ago, the 42 year old just literally struck gold, winning Best Supporting Actress at the 67th Annual Golden Globe Awards for her role as Mary, a verbally and physically abusive mother n the film Precious. The film, directed by Lee Daniels and produced by Oprah Winfrey and Tyler Perry, is an adaptation of the novel Push by Saaphire. The film is a gritty and brave drama that dares to take on the difficult yet important social topics of sexual abuse, illiteracy, poverty, violence, incest, and obesity. The film carries critical acclaim, a plethora of award nominations, and a powerhouse cast which includes Paula Patton, Mariah Carey, Lenny Kravitz, newcomer Gabourey ‘Gabby’ Sidibe, and of course the newly awarded Mo’Nique. A victim of sexual abuse herself, an emotional Mo’Nique accepted her award Sunday evening, boldly stating: “I celebrate this award with all the Preciouses, with all the Marys — I celebrate this award with every person that’s ever been touched,” she said. “It’s now time to tell. And it’s okay.” She managed to beat fellow actresses Penélope Cruz, Julianne Moore, Vera Farmiga, and Anna Kendrick for last night’s honor. Mo’Nique is the third Black woman in history to win a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress, following Whoopi Goldberg for Ghost in 1991 and Jennifer Hudson for Dreamgirls in 2007. We smell an Oscar on the way soon! DrJays.com Live congratulates Mo’Nique for her honor and all those involved with Precious for daring to be a voice for the voiceless and addressing adversities people throughout the world face everyday. New Orleans rapper Curren$y stays high (no pun intended) up on the totem pole of mixtape releases and is quickly jetting to the top of the hip hop game. His latest mixtape, Smokee Robinson, is produced and backed by one of hip hop’s most successful DJs and producers Don Cannon. The mixtape was released the night of Super Bowl XLIV in which Curren$y’s home team, the New Orleans Saints, won their first ever NFL championship beating the Indianapolis Colts 31-17. The win was only the icing on the cake for Curren$y’s recent release and makes the mixtape even that more special for him. Curren$y is one of the few rappers to stay true to himself with a distinctive flow and fashion sense. He is quickly gaining a buzz, leaving an impressive mark on the Internet scene via blogs, videos, and social networking sites but all of the above did not happen overnight. As a teenager, he was signed to Master P’s No Limit Records and then in 2005 he signed with newly convicted felon Lil Wayne and his label Young Money Entertainment, where he remained until 2007. While at Young Money, Curren$y scored a minor hit with “Where the Cash At?” which featured Lil Wayne and female emcee Remy Ma. More notably, he spearheaded the successful Fly Society, a clothing and music company, with skateboarder Terry Kennedy. Smokee Robinson is bound to be one of the most talked about mixtapes this year and is going to prepare the rapper for a smooth landing in households when his debut full length album, The Grand Scheme of Things, drops later this year. Smokee Robinson features noteworthy appearances from Wiz Khalifa, Sounds » Society »

Murder Was The Case
Malcolm X Assassin To Be Released 09:00PM ET March 22, 2010 Contributor : Madame C A Rocky Williform Company Every so often, history bestows upon us the presence and legacy of a figure that makes an infinite impact upon our world even after they have left us in the flesh. One example of such a figure would be the late great El-Hajj Malik ElShabazz, otherwise known as Malcolm X. The human rights activist and speaker is credited for being a leader within the Civil Rights Movement and advocate of Black Nationalism. Malcolm X was brutally assassinated while giving a speech at the historic Audubon Ballroom on Broadway at 165 th Street in Manhattan at the hands of a man who will be freed in just a matter of days. The man behind the trigger, Thomas Hagan after 17 times of attempting release, was granted parole on March 3rd and will be released from prison next month. Hagan (who at the time of Malcolm X's death was known as Talmadge X) was a one-time militant member of the Nation of Islam and admitted to pulling the trigger that unfortunate and fateful Tuesday February 21, 1965. Hagan claimed he participated and carried out the cold murder because he felt Malcolm X was a "hypocrite" who was going against the Nation of Islam. Hagan was given 20 years to life. Hagan earned his Master's degree while in prison and was granted work release in the late 1980s. Within the last couple years, he has spent his free time with his family while working at a local fast food restaurant in Brooklyn. Addressing why he needed to be released, Hagan stated: "I've been incarcerated for 40 years, and I've had a good record all around. I don't see any reason for holding me."

Rude Boy Goes #1 06:00AM ET March 19, 2010 Contributor : Madame C A Rocky Williform Company R&B and pop sensation Rihanna has bagged her sixth number one single to date since she debuted as Jay-Z's protégé in 2005 hailing from the small island of Barbados with her debut album Music of the Sun. The island beauty's latest single "Rude Boy," an up-tempo and flirtatious track, has inexcusably bypassed other singles in the nation and currently sits at the top spot. This recent accomplishment is noteworthy as her latest album Rated R was dismal in sales compared to her past releases which were instant hits. Many believe that the album's dark and gloomy concept did not sit well with fans and listeners alike. Yet, must we not forget the tumultuous and horrific place the singer was in a year ago as a victim of domestic abuse at the hands of one-time boyfriend and singer Chris Brown. It might be safe to say that Rated R was a therapeutic album of healing and "Rude Boy" is a ray of joy in an album saturated in pain. The singer is currently in the studio working on her follow-up album and has been reported to be collaborating with talented singer and songwriter Sean Garrett. Nevertheless, with six number one singles and counting, Rihanna can be as rude as she wants to be.

Close But No Cigar
Sade Turns Drake Down 06:00AM ET March 19, 2010 Contributor : Madame C A Rocky Williform Company New kid on the block, rapper Drake literally has the world at his fingertips. The talented MC can literally have anything he asks for, from covering your favorite magazine, having numerous endorsement deals, songwriting credits, and features to having the backing of some of music's elite-all except one that is. Earlier this year the rapper professed his longing and desire to collaborate with the legendary soul singer Sade on his upcoming debut studio album, Thank Me Later. Amid numerous interviews of a gushing and anxious Drake, Sade declined his offer, breaking the rapper's musical heart. The renowned soul legend said about her refusal: "I've never collaborated because I've always avoided working outside my safety zone — I can be exactly who I am and can fail or succeed within the moment. I feel safe working like I do. I wouldn't want to work in a situation where I am expected to deliver, because I think I wouldn't deliver." The mysterious and somewhat mystifying singer rarely collaborates with other artists, so when Drake received the news he understood. Perhaps he will just have to prove to Sade that he is indeed worthy of collaborating with after the release of Thank Me Later which is expected this May. Drake said of being rejected: "Other people's visuals, other people's songs, stepping outside your zone can jeopardize your brand. It can bring you down as opposed to bring you up. I personally feel we could have done something amazing. But I don't think she really knows who I am, really, my genre of music. I put it out there. It was more of a hopeful thing. It was a very early stage where I was at when I said that I was hoping. One day. Maybe after this album comes out." Apparently Drake didn't catch wind of Sade saying she was feeling Raekwon's OB4CL2 album. This proves that she is definitely aware of the genre. There just might be hope for a future collaboration between the budding rapper and the historic singer. Yet again, it might be wise not to hold your breath.

Lil Wayne Goes Gold With 'Rebirth' 09:00PM ET March 16, 2010 Contributor : Madame C A Rocky Williform Company Rocking an orange jumpsuit and sitting in a jail cell has not stopped Lil Wayne from topping the charts and selling records. His latest rockinspired album, Rebirth has just been certified Gold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). Rebirth has sold over 500,000 copies since it debuted five weeks ago at number 2 on the Billboard charts, selling 176,000 copies in its first week. The album has spawned chart-topping singles including "Prom Queen," "On Fire," and "Drop The World" featuring Eminem. The album's next single will be "Knockout" featuring Nicki Minaj. Trading 808s for guitar riffs, many critics were hesitant of the rapper entering new territory with this album's sound but it is apparent anything that Lil Wayne touches turns to gold. Literally.

Respect Your Roots
Keri Hilson Travels To Africa For New Album 06:00AM ET March 25, 2010 Contributor : Madame C A Rocky Williform Company There is no doubt that singer, songwriter, and producer Keri Hilson is a triple threat in the music industry. Hilson has been responsible for some of R&B and Pop's music sensations, writing songs for Britney Spears, Ciara, and Kelly Rowland. The Georgia peach has had quite the year as she debuted last year with her first studio album, A Perfect World, which spawned hit singles "Turning Me On" and "Knocks You Down." Hilson won several music awards and even scored a couple of Grammy nominations including "Best New Artist," earlier this year. Now that she's made quite a name for herself, there is nowhere to go but up and to Africa, of course. The songbird has recently traveled to and returned from Nigeria and South Africa, gaining much influence and inspiration for her upcoming untitled sophomore album from her travels. "African music is very drum-heavy. It was very inspiring. I'm definitely going to be using some of that inspiration, Hilson excitedly quipped." Alongside inspirational sounds from the Motherland, her production duo of Polow Da Don and Timbaland are expected to produce a majority of the album. The vocalist has also tapped Kanye West to feature on the project, who also appeared on her debut album. She also anxiously wants to work with the very talented Ryan Leslie on her sophomore effort, which is due out later this year.

Work Hard. Play Harder.
By Madame C October 24, 2009

Playtime is over. Virginia born and bred rap duo, The Clipse have not only had a past of pushing keys on street corners but are presently pushing bars and rhymes since their 2001 debut album, Lord Willin’ hit the scene running. Malice, one half of the acclaimed duo, caught up with Madame C to briefly discuss the duo’s latest music and their very successful clothing line, Play Cloths (pronounced “play clothes”) which is quickly becoming a mainstay in Hip Hop fashion.

Madame C: What inspired your style today? Malice: You know, I think me and my brother kind of feed off each other. First of all, I’m a have ya’ll know that she’s making me do this interview like she just came and bum rushed me and bull guarded me like guerilla journalism out here-I’m just teasing! But I’m loving it. I’m loving her. (Laughs) It’s friendly competition and definitely lyric-driven Hip Hop that’s what we come up on, that’s what we know and love. That’s the Hip Hop we know and love and that’s where we’re at with it today. MC: What are you wearing today? Malice: What else would I be wearing other than Play Cloths. This is our new clothing line. We’re celebrating a year in business-Four Seasons Four Sell-Outs. Play Cloths is what is check us out at www.playcloths.com MC: That’s wonderful, congratulations. Everyone from Jay-Z to Curren$y has rocked Play Cloths. So your new single is doing very well. Malice: Yeah, the new single is really good, hence the name I’m Good featuring Pharrell. (Both laugh) It’s kind of crazy. MC: It feels good to be back, I know. Malice: Definitely. Definitely it feels good to be back, you know what I am saying? We really have love and passion for this music and it’s just what it is. MC: The game really needs you all. Malice: That’s what’s up! That’s what’s up! You said it not me. (Both laugh)

Pharoahe Monch Prepares for W.A.R.
By Madame C June 24, 2009

EXCLUSIVE: Pharoahe Monch sits down and talks with Madame C about who he’s feeling lyrically, healthcare, President Obama, his long awaited album, and Organized Konfusion.

Arguably one of the best lyricists of all time-having a vocabulary of versatility, soulful flows, and lyrical mastery-Pharoahe Monch is a technically gifted emcee. Not only known for 1999’s legendary joint, “Simon Says,” and the widely popular Rawkus Records’ joint, “Oh No” featuring Mos Def and Nate Dogg from the album Lyrists Lounge Vol. 2 (2000), Pharoahe Monch is undoubtedly known for making a powerful impact on Hip Hop. As co-founder of 90’s renowned Hip Hop duo, Organized Konfusion, and having two highly praised solo albums under his belt-1999’s Internal Affairs and 2007’s DesirePharoahe Monch has worked with many in the game from Talib Kweli, Common, Xzibit, KRS-One, Wyclef Jean, Rah Digga, Styles P, The Roots, and Hip Hop violinist Miri-Ben Ari, just to name a few. A greatly accomplished emcee with a lengthy Hip Hop resum é that is soon to be updated with the highly anticipated release of his third solo project W.A.R. (Let My People Go) later this year. The only thing Pharoahe Monch hasn’t done is run for President of the United States. Yet.

Madame C: A lot has changed in the game and I want to get your opinion on those changes. Pharoahe Monch: Right now it’s quite evident the changes lie in how accessible music has become, thus making music more disposable, as well. Because there is so much more access to music, everyone seems to have ADD when it comes to being a fan of someone, somebody is being pushed on you every minute. So there is so much music being fed to you in a shorter period of time now because of the Internet and because everyone is trying to vibe for that position in terms of being in your face. But subsequently I think the music industry has suffered because just naturally with technology and being able to download singles as opposed to records and also not even pay for music it’s become a singles game. You know the industry has suffered but it kind of right now is forcing artists to do better work in the sense that if you are going to try to garner someone’s attention you better be making some good ass songs right now. Because I think the consumers are like I’m not being fooled. I’m not buying that. We’re hip to your brainwash scheme, you know? You see it a lot in these records played over and over on the radio and then you look at the sales and it’s not just reflective of how much you’ve heard the song which means that the consumer is not really buying into the artist. It’s sad because so many artists have talentit’s just not developed or the labels are not willing to grow with them and move onto a second and third single and teach them how to speak and become individuals that people can become fans of teach them how to perform and make songs that have some substance about what they want to talk about as individuals. MC: I agree. It seems that music is being stripped of her individuality. Now let’s say you were to leave the game tomorrow, God forbid! But what if you just threw your hands up and was done entirely, what would you say the game would be missing without Pharoahe Monch on the scene? PM: Everything would implode! Things would just implode inward and people would get sucked into this whirlwind of nothingness. An abyss, the void of lyricism and soul! (Both Laugh) PM: Nah but what would the game be missing? It most definitely would be missing an artist who has a lot of integrity and is meticulous about every little thing. I hold that dear because in this paradigm you only have your word and your work to represent you, you know? That’s all I have really-my life, my pen, my pad. So that’s what I have to present to people so I take it seriously. It would lose someone who internalizes music and loves it and would be doing this career-wise or not. It’s definitely a love that I get when I get a thought from the Most High, process it, see it, bring it to fruition, and see it through-that’s a great thing. So you would be missing an individual who really has a lot of respect for that process as well. MC: And we most definitely would be missing someone with a whole lot of talent! PM: A whole lot of talent, I think! (Smiles) MC: Speaking of talent, who are you feeling nowadays? PM: Man, I just seen this artist, Martin Luther-he had a show. He’s an artist from Cali, a soul-rock artist. He opened up his set by doing six brand new songs that nobody ever heard and totally floored and wowed the audience. He’s a great songwriter. I like this kid, Blu

from LA, he’s an emcee. I was working on a song with The Roots for their new album and he did some verses on The Roots album and I was just like…wow. There’s this one song where he laid the verse and Black Thought was like, “You can jump on this song if you want.” And I was just like... (Speechless) I had heard about him but I hadn’t bought any of his material. I’m excited about his career, in general. He just really sounds like he’s interested in having a career, just hearing how he hands out a 16. He’s like, I’m in this for the long haul. MC: Yeah. He’s official. PM: You don’t hear that immediately when you listen to artists, everybody uses that word but he definitely painted something and I was like wow! I like Charles Hamilton. I’ve seen him perform and the thing that stands out for me from him is he has this charisma onstage that’s not unlike Slick Rick in the sense that it’s arrogant and he draws you in. He’s real comfortable onstage with what he does, so it’s interesting to see where that’s going to go. I hope he maintains and keeps his creative integrity from like even before he got involved with the industry on a high-end level. That’s key. MC: Let me ask you, being from New York, you turn on the radio and you hear a majority of Hip Hop artists reppin’ the South. Where’s New York in all of this? What happened? PM: Oh man. I haven’t asked that question in a long time. It’s weird because I’ve recognized where it was, when it was, and who it was. But even in my group Organized Konfusion, we weren’t trying to be king of that territorial. In fact, now in my career people are like, “Where is he from?” They know I’m from New York but they don’t know I’m from Queens-I push it heavy but I guess the sound of the music kind of comes across like the dude could be from fucking Cali or wherever. I say that to say I kind of feel that New York got caught up in the industry part of things in which you feel pressured to sound like what you think is successful on the radio. A lot of times by the time you go full circle and that stuff comes to the forefront the trend has already changed to something else. I feel like New York, a place that was so original some years ago, is not really trying to spearhead originality in my opinion. MC: You mentioned Organized Konfusion, so you all are back together? Will there be a reunion? PM: We’re doing a show-a huge show, a 3-day festival with Coldplay, The Beastie Boys, and Tool. We’re performing the first day of the festival with The Beastie Boys and Q-Tip. We haven’t performed in over ten years and I’m excited. MC: And when is this happening? PM: It’s happening July 31st. MC: I know the fans will be excited. PM: I’m very excited because there’s a love in the midst of that creation and that time, too. I was telling Prince [Po] that the key of pulling off this performance is actually transcending and going back into that time and regaining that love for that moment instead of replicating what it was…like really embodying what we were feeling at the time. It’s difficult to do because of course if it’s hit songs that are old you perform the hit songs and people are like “That’s my song!” But if it’s not, then it’s just like where do you draw the inspiration from

when you’re doing some obscure stuff? And it really comes from within; I think it can resonate for people and people can feel that from you. MC: Let’s talk about your label situation, now that you’re an independent artist, what is the transition like being an artist who was signed to a major deal to now being independent? PM: The last record, Desire (2007) was major; it was put out on Universal/SRC and it was nothing but love. They were really feeling the record. It performed really well. The “Push” record performed really well and “Body Baby” performed really well in the UK at radio over there. Didn’t perform well at radio in [the U.S.] but it was received critically, it got great reviews. Which all an artist, like myself, is really looking for because off of that people want to see you perform and tour so I’ve been touring off that album. But going into the option of doing my next album I just felt like, having so much knowledge and being in the business so long I kind of have a marketing mind, more so than even an artist’s mind. I look at other artists and I’m like “This is what I would do with her.” Even females I’m like, “She don’t look right. That dress ain’t right for her. Who told her to put that on?” (Laughs) That’s just how my mind works. So going into this project the marketing plan is just so insane. I sat down with them and I told them my plan and they were blown away. But they didn’t have anything to add, you know? It was just like that’s a great idea. And I’m like well shit give me a job here and fucking let me be an artist! From that I was just like, no disrespect or none of that but I would appreciate it if you guys let me go because I think at this point the way the industry is right now, I can do this. Some might disagree with me. I have like two albums I’m working on. Some of my executive producers are like, “This particular project you should definitely do major because it sounds so major.” But I’m still on the fence. The opportunity is there but I’ve started my own company, W.A.R., which stands for “We Are Renegade”. And I think the only way it’s going to work is to embody that attitude-let me try to spearhead a company, let me work 150% for my company, let me try to implement things I know, and give this knowledge to new artists and cultivate. There’s nothing else to do with wisdom but to past it on. I feel fatherly in that sense as well and I can’t really do that without owning my own situation. So I just thought I would partake in the owning of that stuff and they were gracious enough to let me go scot-free. MC: So the upcoming project is still going to be titled W.A.R.? PM: Yeah. It’s called W.A.R. (Let My People Go). I think one of the more crazier songs is a song called “Hit Man” which I wrote after reading the book Hit Man [by Rex Feral], and it chronicles the music industry from the 50’s to the 80’s and just how uneducated artists were, just robbed of their publishing, royalties, and really mistreated. It still goes this day in so many different ways. Like for what an R&B act gets budget and marketing-wise as opposed to a Pop act or Rock act when Hip Hop is still the biggest selling [genre], besides from probably country , they don’t treat it as such. So reading the book, I saw a lot into myself and a lot of my mistakes and I was really taken aback and emotional. I wrote the song and it’s pretty deep. It’s not a subliminal. It’s pretty much saying, “This person did this and you did that!” (Both Laugh) MC: Now tell me, whose puttin’ in production-wise on the album? PM: An artist named M-Phazes from Australia, who I found through my background singer. She put me onto him and I was just like, “Wow!” We actually toured in Australia with Kanye West and he came out and we hooked up. A producer named Fourten from North

Carolina , who did the title track, “Let My People Go.” Longtime producer, Lee Stone did a song called “Momma’s Boy.” Which is like a glimpse into me and being a momma’s boy but more or less the negative results of being that way; so it’s kind of a, I don’t wanna say ugly, but a realistic look at the result of what can happen when you have respect-when your good friends with your mom. And I think a lot of Black males, 80s babies…70’s…late 70’s… are inflicted with that same issue because of fathers and mothers but both my parents were there. But in a lot of situations the mothers held it down which has a good and bad result for Black men evolving in my opinion. MC: So when can we expect the album to drop? PM: We were just talking about dates the other day.

MC: So later this year? PM: Yeah definitely! We’re trying to drop it late summer/early fall but in a perfect world probably September. MC: That’s great! Lastly, how do you feel about President Barack Obama being the first Black U.S. president? And secondly, how do you feel that legendary event has impacted Hip Hop because we did see Hip Hop become a bit more political-at least in terms of the imagewith Russell Simmons and Jay-Z spearheading campaigns for the youth to go out and vote? PM: I think for me as I look back to when I was coming up, 3rd through 5th grade, when I really started to develop my opinions and I really started to look into my future at those developing stages, I would look up at the board and I would see all these White people who didn’t look like me. And I would rationalize and take into consideration the country and its history and I would dream and think of all the inspirational things to make my goals what I wanted them to be. But to encompass being back in 3rd grade and having Obama’s head up there would have really gave me a lot more inspiration in terms of, maybe not politically, but I definitely know that I am going to do what I envision what I want to do. There are no afterthoughts or barriers-this is a foregone conclusion! Even at that early age, aside from all the politics, I think for me that’s one of the most important things for me is how it’s going to impact, not just children of color, mainly children of color, but everybody because it’s not just Black and White-it’s very layered. But like I said for children of color you can really take that and your parents can take that and use it as a tool-despite politics, just to have that as a visual means a lot. MC: Very powerful! And in terms of Hip Hop? PM: In terms of Hip Hop, I think it has educated. With [last year’s Presidential] race, I mean I have always been aware politically from some degree, but I have found out genres and details about voting, the voting process, bills being passed, legislation, and parties that I never would have known about. MC: That’s an interesting angle to look at it. PM: Yeah. I mean I was taught to a degree and to a degree I was like who cares. And now it’s like okay now that I’m where I’m at and I’m independent and paying for my healthcare the things became real issues-I mean real issues that I was upset about, you know? My

mom is a senior and we’re looking at this shit and it’s some serious shit, you know? However you view politics, the Man, or wherever you stand-healthcare in this country, being asthmatic, is very dire to this country. MC: You’re asthmatic? Me, too. (Both Laugh) PM: Yeah. I was like yo man, this shit has got to change. I travel, you know, we’re mostly in Europe and I got sick with my asthma in Copenhagen and the healthcare was like seven levels above what it is here. Free! I was touring outside and developed a throat infection and the shit got real bad and they were like, “Yo we’re gonna give you this and give you that and if it doesn’t clear up you might want to call your family because we might have to operate.” Which is scary, but I am just saying thankfully it didn’t have to come to that, but it would have been free! I’m like this is crazy! Then we come back and we have a bad plane experience and my manager went in for a hospital visit and it was $9,000 to $12,000 just for a few days! I’m like this is crazy! Like who has $12,000? Regardless whether it’s an insurance issue, (Pauses) I just feel we can do this a better way!

Pharoahe Monch for 2012, anyone? Until then, look out for Pharoahe Monch’s long-awaited and highly anticipated album, W.A.R. (Let My People Go) dropping later this year. Shout out to W.A.R. Media and Laughing Dog Studios for everything in NY. -Madame C

Watermelon Dreams By Madame C
March 07, 2009

Plant an idea and grow watermelons. That is what, 22-year-old entrepreneur and businessman, Darrin Nobles, did. Nobles did not necessarily grow actual watermelons but built a clothing line based on them. Watermelon Democracy®, Apparel is the latest urban clothing company and line to hit the scene and is quickly becoming a force to be reckoned with. Watermelon Democracy™ is grounded on three (3) key concepts: Evolution, Power, and Freedom. With celebrity backing from household names such as Hill Harper (CSI: New York) and Malcolm Jamal Warner (The Cosby Show), Nobles-founder and CEO, is quickly seeing the fruits of his labor, hard work, and dreams. Literally. Madame C: Where were you when the concept of Watermelon Democracy™ was fathomed? Darrin Nobles: I was at my friend’s apartment--just hanging out, watching TV. MC: Why a watermelon? DN: It was really just thinking of the opposite of a Banana. From that, I went further with the development of the concept. MC: Thinking on a deeper plateau, the watermelon has been a symbol associated with negativity, stereotypes, and racism for the Black community throughout history. How does your brand relate to this, if at all? DN: Well I would say that it can be compared to the word “nigga.” [I am] not saying I

like its use but how blacks say..."we took something negative and made it positive" Watermelon is a fruit of this earth from God and the way I define its usage being representative of the human body--is something that I think helps to transcend race. In regards to stereotypes, if someone has a problem with watermelon because of how it has been used then they should have a problem with so many other things that have been used negatively in this country. And watermelon is of this earth...unlike manmade things critics may try to compare me to the word “nigga.” MC: That’s very deep. Now I understand, the name initially being a spoof or mockery of the GAP’s Banana Republic, how is Watermelon Democracy™ different from Banana Republic? DN: [Watermelon Democracy™] is different because it has a positive and inspiring meaning. Banana Republic has a negative definition and I think most people in this country don’t realize it. I use that as an example of how clothing lines have no meaning behind it, they are just all about making money. That’s why I wanted [Watermelon Democracy™] to be different. MC: Do you think it will become the giant Banana Republic is and more? DN: Of course! No matter what I do I always foresee great things for it. If I put in the leg work behind my brand, I have no reason to think that I can’t achieve the success of other popular brands. MC: What has been the biggest difficulty of owning a brand? DN: I think that differentiating my brand from most other urban brands has been the biggest difficulty. The watermelon makes people think - just Black. So they won’t even get beyond the name--but then they see the clothes, read the definition, and realize its more project contemporary than it is urban. MC: Who is your target market? DN: 18 - 25 year olds, socially conscious, young professionals. My brand can be for any and everyone who wears graphic tees and are willing to pay 20 to 30 bucks for one. MC: So my Granny could rock one then? DN: YES! Tell granny to get her homegirls in it, too. (Both laugh) MC: Will do! DN: But my target is definitely 18 to 25 year olds with a bit more mature perspective on life. MC: Where do you see Watermelon Democracy™ in ten years?

DN: Watermelon Democracy™ will be a brand with a variety of apparel. Denim, Polos, button-ups, pants--the works! You will go inside the mall and be excited about going to a Watermelon Democracy™ store and seeing what crazy things we have available-from a cool store vibe to unique packaging. Visiting a store will be an experience and not just a day shopping. MC: Now I know many noteworthy people have backed Watermelon Democracy™ but ultimately, if you had to choose only one celebrity to see rockin’ and endorsing your brand, who has yet to do so, who would it be? DN: Probably Oprah. (laughs) MC: Why is that? DN: I mean, whatever she touches it turns to gold, literally. MC: That’s very true. What are three words that express your style? DN: Me, Relaxing, and Intentional. MC: Now what three musical artists would you say echo your style? DN: Great question. I honestly can’t think of any because my style is extremely chill and musical artists are all about making fashion statements. So I’d probably say Mos Def, Cody Chestnutt and The Roots. MC: What fashion trend do you despise the most? DN: The Ed Hardy craze. It’s dying down now but I just hate how that hit the market and people went wild, wanting these $100+ shirts to define who they are. MC: But I own a few Ed Hardy shirts, what are you trying to imply? (Both laugh) DN: You're whack--just kidding! No my main beef was this; people would use the clothes to define themselves economically and socially. My brand wants people to define themselves, by themselves and not allow the clothes they purchase to represent who they [are]. [I think] Ed Hardy cloth[ing] [is] described as being great for those people who love tattoos but [are] too afraid or conservative to actually get [a tattoo]. (Laughs) So they are allowing these t-shirt tattoos to define them in a sense. MC: With the rumored dissolution of LL Cool J’s clothing line Todd Smith, and others such as Karl Kani and FUBU, what to you, makes and sustains a good clothing line? DN: I think being able to keep up with the changing fashion trends, putting meaning behind your brand, and also support. You must have the support of your target market if you plan to exist and thrive for the long haul. This country is particularly fad happy, so

when the FUBU fad was old--it wasn’t “cool” to wear it anymore. But if you look at TOMS shoes that will forever be successful because of the charity aspect of the line. MC: Will you be going beyond t-shirts? If so, what can we expect to see your brand on? DN: We will definitely go beyond t-shirts, with hoodies and Polos being the next step for us! MC: Now let’s say, in the future I walk into a Watermelon Democracy™ chain and hear a soundtrack playing in the background, what artists would be featured on it? DN: If you aren’t a music fanatic, you will probably never have heard some of the artists before. I am all about giving underground artists a chance to shine. So off the top of my head I can think of Azeem--who rocks Watermelon Democracy™ by the way, Addlib, 88-Keys, and others. Mainstream artists will probably be Lupe Fiasco, Common, Kid Cudi, Adele, Justin Nozuka, John Mayer, and Wiz Khalifa. It would be all kinds of artists. [Just] no ringtone rap! (Laughs) (Stops and responds to me playing Drake’s “Ignant Sh*t” during our interview) DN: Jay-Z is better on that beat. (Laughs) MC: Will there be a line just for women? DN: Oh yes definitely! Now my clothes come in women’s fits, so they are for men and women. MC: So we won’t be seeing any Watermelon Democracy™ handbags in the future, let’s say? DN: No, you will, just not in the near future. That’s long-term, probably within the next 5 years. It all depends on how the company grows. MC: Now would you be designing the handbags yourself? (Laughs) DN: I have a few connections with a few young women in fashion school. MC: What projects can we expect to see from you and the Watermelon Democracy™ fam in the near future? DN: In the near future look for our non-profit work with the Children’s Defense Funds Freedom School here in Dallas, TX. I am extremely excited about working with kids and helping to teach them some life skills. MC: What advice would you give aspiring designers or brand makers?

DN: First know why they want to start it, what is their purpose. Do research to make sure they really want to do it and have a passion for it. Research includes interviewing their projected target market, understanding market trends, and what will differentiate their brand. Second, money. Make sure they have some source of capital or ability to obtain it. Next get an accountant buddy to help them do their books--expected expenses and how to break even and network! Network! Network! MC: Yes! DN: But after the up front work is done u have to have a business plan because I think it keeps you on task and you need to have your business in writing if you plan to get loans/investors. MC: So you have to have a business plan? DN: Because anybody can say,” I want to have a clothing line," but not everyone will have a 30 page business plan outlining the why and how of their business. It keeps you focused. MC: Is there anything you would like to say before we wrap up? DN: I appreciate you taking the time out to interview me. My brand is all about empowering minds and inspiring them to be successful and give back. 10% of my profits go to the CDFs Freedom School program. Loso's Way, the Right Way? By Madame C July 26, 2009

A native of Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn, the home of Brooklyn's native son-the late great Notorious B.I.G., and rappers Jay-Z, Maino, Lil Kim, Papoose, Talib Kweli, Mos Def, and countless others, John Jackson-better known as F-A-B-O-L-O-U-S has been in the game since 2001, and has made quite a name for himself, generating four studio albums and his fifth, Loso's Way (2009) drops Tuesday July 28th. Fabolous has always kept his private life private but now to suggest that he has his way, his latest effort exposes some aspects of it. From being shot three years ago to the birth of his son, Fab gets personal with his pen and pad this time around. Having the pleasure of attending the album release party for Loso's Way (2009) I had the opportunity to hear a side of Fab that has yet to be unleashed-until now. Notably known for his witty punchlines, a 2-year hiatus has not diminished Fabolous' wit. Take for instance the DJ Khalil produced track, "Imma Do It," where Fabo boldy states, 'Who are you to tell me how to conduct myself? Why don't you practice safe sex and go f*ck yourself...My attitude is celibate, I don't give a f*ck...My attitude is virgin, still don't give a f*ck.' It is evident that Fabo still has that slightly cocky yet charming attitude about him and he still can produce punchlines for days. The drop-top worthy Jay-Z assisted, "Money Goes, Honey Stays" produced by J.D. and the J.U.S.T.I.C.E League produced "Feel Like I'm Back" in which Fabo proclaims, 'Got the streets back and I ain't even pay the ransom,' carry smooth yet energizing beats.

The track "Everything, Everyday, Everywhere" has Ryan Leslie's production written all over it, with a healthy dose of bass, it is no wonder that this is Fab's newest single. His interesting play on his adlibs as definitions and directions and use of sound bits behind his verses ensure that this is going to be the song of the summer. And to top it off, Keri Hilson's sweet melodic voice over the chorus makes it dance-worthy and club-friendly. At the album's release party they showcased the single's music video and the love of the track is expressed by the numerous cameo appearances which includes DJ Clue, Trey Songz, Amerie, Keri Hilson, Ryan Leslie, and actress Regina Hall, just to name a few. Look out for the video, coming to a television near you. [Now back to our regularly scheduled program.] The horns and drums on "Salute" carry a very drumline, marching band feel. The track features Lil Wayne on the chorus and second verse, encouraging haters to 'Get your hand to your hairline and salute.’ "There He Go," produced by Blackout Movement is somewhat of the black (no pun intended) sheep on the album as far as beats go. The track opens with sirens, with Fab laying a whispering light flow over a futuristic semi-techno beat. Later Fabolous introduces us to the "Fabolous Life," courtesy of a Ryan Leslie flute-filled beat. Fabolous claims that this life is where 'You meet the life, the life meets you, and everything is nice.' The track ultimately has a Palm Beach, cigar smoking, champagne toasting, sun shining, yacht riding feel to it. Of course it wouldn't be a Fab album without at least one track strictly for the ladies. Fab calls in labelmate Ne-Yo to help him out on the J.D. produced "Makin Love." The track is singleworthy, with a sensual and sexy flow over a sample of Brandy's "Brokenhearted." Trey Songz lends his vocals to the very personal "Last Time," singing 'This is the last time but I gotta see my baby.' But one must not get the message confused as the reference of "baby" is not Fab's lady in the flesh but rather a metaphor for Fab having to visit his other love, "the streets," one last time. The most connected and encapsulating track of Fab's perceived concept of Carlito's Way (1993) is the Mafia-inspired, "Pachanga," the name of Carlito's best friend who later betrays him in the film. Fab raps the chorus, 'A thug changes and love changes, best friends become strangers, pachangas," over a sampling of Nas' acclaimed, "The Message." The Alchemist lends his skill of production to the Just Blaze scratched, "Lullaby" in which we find Fab's flow rocks the beat to sleep with noteworthy punchlines like, 'Ya'll stay in pocket like wallets because you can't see meclosed eyelids.' The most intimate and personal track hands down is "Stay," highlighting the man that is Fabolous-John Jackson. The track opens with the goose bumps creating vocals of Marsha Ambrosius, formerly of neo-soul duo Floetry. "Stay" reflects on three generations of Jacksons-Fabolous's father, himself, and his newborn son. "Stay" is about the relationship Fab has with his father and his son, ultimately a track of a son asking his father not to go-Fab promises, 'This year I became a father and I'ma die being one.'

The final cut on the album, "I Miss My Love," has a storytelling scheme, as Fab narrates the crime story of the fictional painsaking murder of his lady due to the streets, over samples of Al Green's "Simply Beautiful." Upon hearing the track, I heard a familiar "Louder!" being echoed in the background- a sample of hard rock band, Mountain's live performance of "Long Red “at 1969's Woodstock-which is famously heard in many Hip Hop songs such as The Game's "Wouldn't Get Far," produced by and features Kanye West. To say the least, the concept of Loso's Way (2009) being a spin-off of the 1993 Al Pacino film, Carlito's Way, falters as it is not solid nor coherent in terms of a theme as Jay-Z's American Gangster (2007) was to the film of the same name starring Denzel Washington. In addition, it is evident that Fab's favorite brands are Louis Vuitton and Gucci as he mentions them numerous times on every track, which can become slightly redundant. Overall, Loso's Way (2009) is not only a head-nodding, finger-snapping and eyebrow-raising project filled with punchlines and fabulous (pun intended) production but is a personal confession, a personal platform we have yet to see from Fab until now. It is clear that Mr. F-A-BO-L-O-U-S is back and it's going to be Loso's Way from Tuesday July 28th and beyond. And who will you have to thank? Loso, in case you didn't know so. -Madame C

“My name is Jabee and this is a blessing for ya’ll.”- ‘A Blessing’ from Must Be Nice (2009)
In life we are encouraged to count our blessings and thankfully we can add one more blessing with the rest, thanks to Oklahoma. For those of you who may be geographically challenged, Oklahoma is located in the Southern region of the United States and sits comfortably above Texas and below Kansas. Oklahoma’s own, Jabee is soon to bless the world with his mixtape, Must Be Nice (2009). This blessing in disguise comes in the form of a 24-track mixtape consisting of nothing less than the best in beats, verses, and is crafted by an emcee that proves himself more than worthy of blessing the mic. In summation, Must Be Nice (2009) is proof that blessings should come in the form of mixtapes more often. Jabee blesses us with his well-versed intellect, philosophical rhymes, genius, and one of a kind flow throughout Must Be Nice (2009). The track “Boombox” has a sound that is evocative of the 1980’s-Hip Hop’s self-proclaimed Golden Age-where high top fades, gold chains, and Radio Raheems paraded the streets; blaring the beauty that is Hip Hop through boombox speakers. “Laced to the Heart” samples the late great Issac Haye’s “Do Your Thing” from the album Shaft (1971) and serves as a motivational track for listeners alike. “Evaporation,” smoothly flows from speaker to eardrum, sampling Big Daddy Kane’s classic, “Ain’t No Half Stepping. “Funky She” is a track with a Jimi Hendrix vibe and is an ode to that oh so fly chick- the one where “all the guys want her and the girls want to be her.” Yeah, you know the one. “Dumb Musica” is a track dedicated to the Amoses and Andys of today’s commercialized Hip Hop. The track is produced by and features Black Spade. Rapping their disdain for today’s watered down mainstream Hip Hop, over a simple yet

JABEE – MUST BE NICE REVIEW « watermelon democracy® blog complex beat, their outlook is not force fed to listeners yet may have those contributing to their disdain taking notes. Boldly asserting in the chorus, ‘I’ma maintain til I turn them back around to the good MCs/Ya’ll boring me/Stop being robot/Get some new MP3s.’ Through rhymes, by way of Jabee, such as, ‘Music ain’t music if you misuse it’ and ‘I guess I lost my patience with radio stations/The same ten songs stay in rotation/And that’s hour after hour/Now or never/We need substance every once in a while/Give us something to think about/Ain’t nothing wrong with a dance track/But back to back?/Man that’s just wack/Where’d the culture go?/Soulful Black folks/It’s all in the swag and clothes/It’s in the Ricky Bobby dance cuz that’s all they know/But they need to know more/It’s up to us to teach/The duty of the civilized is to civilize the uncivilized,’ one can see that “Dumb Musica” not only stresses the problem of redundancy in today’s Hip Hop music but provides some powerful insight and solutions, as well. “Hip Hop Prayer,” featuring Chuy and produced by Darkness, is another track produced and penned with an objective to save Hip Hop out of an irreplaceable love for the genre. Through audacious yet witty rhymes like, ‘So Hip Hop is what you pray at nighttime for/The music went to Hell/Better pray for an ice storm,’ Jabee is serious about Hip Hop music and her somewhat foolish present and unpredictable future. But along with his seriousness comes a humorous side, rhyming, ‘Resurrect Rap/Got faith in the music/I’m loving Hip Hop/If Faith have kids she’d probably have 2 Pacs/Get it?/2 Pac’s.’ Along with “Hip Hop Prayer” is the track “VIP in HeaveN” produced by the immaculate 9 th Wonder and features XV. The track discusses the heavily materialistic young, fly, and flashy addiction in today’s music industry and how one’s iced-out Jesus piece has no value after one enters the pearly gates. Amen. Another track that stands out on Must Be Nice (2009) production-wise, lyrically, and collaboratively is titled “Money” which features production by Savio is Dead and a guest appearance from EL Prez. And you guessed it, it’s all about the Benjamins, moolah, dough, stacks, dolla dolla bills-whatever one wishes to call it, it wouldn’t be right if there was not a track in reference to money. Sampling Peggy Lee’s 1942 smash “Why Don’t You Do Right (Get Me Some Money, Too),” the track manipulates Lee’s piano nicely and we learn that Jabee pays his rent with rap. And once again he provides his intellect, sharing ‘Money is the root of all evil/Think it all depends on the people.’ Other noteworthy collaborations from the mixtape include, the track “Virtues,” produced by and featuring Theory Hazit and aDDLib, is about the perils of inner city living as heard over a flute-inspired Cabana-like beat. We see Jabee team up once again with dynamic emcee and songstress, Jumakae on “Car Pool” and “That’s Good,” reminiscent of their Blood is the New Black (2008) days-both tracks emit a soulful vibe similar to the likes of Groove Theory and Digable Planets. “LittleEarth,” produced by Kadence and features L.E.G.A.C.Y. and OB-one, displays a collaborative chemistry unlike no other. “Big Bad Wolf,” features Johnny Polygon and is produced by the legendary DJ Green Lantern. Although comical and satirical in nature, the track is a deep and metaphorical perspective of Jabee’s past, present, and future, through an ingenious use of the classic story of the Three Little Pigs in simply one verse. If cabbies bumped music, they may want to consider bumping “Taxi Ride,” produed by Scootbeatz and features Chris McCain. Their riders would not mind the beat at all, as it is an example of production at its finest. In the track Jabee attests that he is ‘0% weak, 100% dope,’ and there is no denying that statement. “Triumph,” produced by Hannibal King, features Southern California emcee Blu, is all the reason why Jabee and Blu need to do a full-length mixtape together. Point. Blank. Period. URBAN + TAKEOUT URBAN GENTLEMEN VAGANT TWEET TWEET LA next week. JABEE – MUST BE NICE REVIEW « watermelon democracy® blog The track, “1983” produced by Scootbeatz and features Chris McCain, is a track where we get an autobiographical look at not only the artist who is Jabee but the beginnings that made him the man he is today. Jabee raps, ‘Everybody wants it all/I just want what I am worth,’ over a sample of Eddie Kendrick’s 1977 hit “Intimate Friends.” It is evident with his intellect, wordplay, wit, and flow that his worth is priceless, to say the least. In the track, “Go Tell Em” produced by Hannibal King, Jabee proclaims that he is ‘Gonna take Oklahoma far/I feel it in my chest.’ And without a doubt he means it, you can feel his love for Oklahoma literally in every bar and every breath. But by far, “Don’t Forget About Me,” produced by D/Will, stands out as a personal sketch of the life he’s led as he pleads to not be forgotten but always remembered. Jabee reveals, ‘I came from the same gun that killed my bro/Grew up with the same folks that killed him tho/The streets was padlocked in Da Vinci Code’ and ‘As a child wanted life as a Cosby kid/Grew up/Realized I was hardly them.’ Although telling, Jabee finds room for inspiration, rapping, ‘So if you find your self dying keep breathing for proof/Proof is in the life if you’re living it right/Triumphant is in the struggle if you’re winning the fight.’ A young man wise beyond his years, Jabee can never be forgotten. Trust. Overall, Must Be Nice (2009) is a piece of work by a young man who has been blessed with the ability to stay true to Hip Hop, himself, and the mic-blessing ears with dope sounds and minds with even deeper thoughts. They say nice guys finish last but Jabee is an exception to this rule-he finishes first. Must Be Nice (2009) drops Wednesday August 12th; the same day as Jabee’s birthday. He can have his cake and eat it, too. Must be nice. -Madame C August 2009 Check out Jabee’s official video promo for Mick Boogie Presents Must Be Nice (2009), here.
