POS-GRIP “HG” TUBING HANGERS
POS-GRIP “HG” Tubing Hangers are very
simple one piece items, which offer all of
the features of far more complicated
systems. No fluting is necessary on the
hanger outer diameter, and so additional
area is provided for sealing. High load
capacity, multiple externally testable metal
seals, elastomer backup profiles, antirotation and preloaded lockdown are all
achieved as the POS-GRIP system is
activated.

The “HG” Tubing Hanger can be run on tubing,
which avoids the cost and complication of a tubing
hanger running tool. The system can by used with
multiple continuous control lines, without added
complexity in the running tool arrangement. Once
the hanger arrives at the correct location in the
wellhead, the POS-GRIP system is activated.
This locks the hanger in torsion, locks it down and
sets multiple metal seals – all within minutes of
landing the hanger. A full working pressure cavity
test under the hanger is then possible, as well as
an external pressure test. Once the seal integrity
has been confirmed, the hanger is ready for flow
testing.

EFFECTS OF
BORE PRESSURE

POS-GRIP “HG” Seals have proved to be particularly successful at
enduring changes in pressures and temperatures throughout field life.
In conventional Unitized wellhead Systems, these changes cause
fretting at the seal interface and eventual failure of conventional annular packoffs. The diagrams show how changes in bore pressure and
annular pressure change the shape of the seal pocket in conventional
systems, moving the hanger and “working” the seal which eventually
fails. POS-GRIP radically preloads the entire seal area such that no
fretting can occur, even with pressure and temperature changes.
“HG” Metal Seals have been tested to 22,500 psi, and development
programs are under way to qualify “HG” for 30,000 psi and 450 degF.

POS-GRIP “HG”
WELLHEAD SYSTEM

POS-GRIP is unique by allowing a high grade metal seal to be set
directly between a hanger and the bore of the wellhead. No separate
annular packoff is required, saving costs, reducing installation time and
enhancing reliability.

SPACEOUT
REQUIRED

WHAT IS AN ADJUSTABLE WELLHEAD?
When drilling from a Jack-up Rig
using a Mudline Suspension
System, Casing Support System
or Subsea Wellhead, it is necessary to “Space out” the casing
strings between the Mudline and
the Surface Wellhead.
An Adjustable Wellhead achieves
this by allowing the Surface
Casing Hanger to land and be
sealed over a range. This can be
achieved without lifting the BOPs.

This technology has significant safety and commercial
advantages over the conventional approach using slip
and seal wellhead equipment, which is to lift the BOPs
and cut the casing to achieve spaceout.

HOW DO YOU ACHIEVE SPACEOUT?
The adjustable range of POS-GRIP Wellheads is generally 8 inches but can be increased for specific applications if required. Pre-planning is undertaken by Plexus to
ensure that the Surface Casing Hanger ends up at the
correct height inside the wellhead when the Mudline
Hanger lands. A summary of the procedure for achieving
this for each casing string is as follows. Water depth
below rotary table of about 200ft is assumed, although
the procedure can be adapted for any water depth.

POS-GRIP™ is a revolutionary wellhead technology which, when
applied to Jack-up drilling applications offers:
• REDUCED INSTALLATION TIME
• INCREASED RELIABILITY
• IMPROVED SAFETY
This unique system uses “through the BOP” mandrel surface
hangers in combination with mudline suspension systems on
single stack/heavy duty jack-up operations to allow the following
features:
• LANDS CASING AT MUDLINE AND AT SURFACE
• STANDARD MUDLINE SYSTEM OPERATION
• ALLOWS PRECISE RISER TENSIONING
• POSITIVELY LOCKS CASING DOWN
• FULL METAL TO METAL ANNULAR SEALS
• TUBING TEST STRING ACCOMODATED
• ALL HANGERS INSTALLED THROUGH BOP
• UP TO 20,000 psi PRESSURE RATING
POS-GRIP™ is the only HPHT solution for use on Heavy Duty
Jack-up rigs equipped with Single Stack 15,000 psi BOPs
In the early 1990’s the first of the Heavy Duty Jackup’s equipped
with 18-3/4” Single Stack Surface BOP’s were introduced to the
market. Unfortunately, in HPHT mode, these rigs STILL had to
cope with unsafe and unnecessary nippling up/down of the BOP as there were no adjustable wellheads which could be deployed to
complement the design of the BOP.

1. 10 joints are clearly
marked as “riser joints”
and carefully measured.

so contingency running
sequences are available).

3. Once the exact riser
length requirement is
known, Plexus instructs
the cutting of a “spacer”
joint. (The length can
either be pre-planned
entirely before the well, or
cut during the drilling of
the well)
4. Primary and contingency running sequences are
calculated, so correct spaceout can still be achieved if a
joint or coupling is damaged while running, and needs to
be discarded.
5. Once run, location of the hanger within the wellhead is
confirmed before the hanger is gripped at the surface
with POS-GRIP.
6. In the event of stuck casing, contingency procedures
have been pre-planned. Emergency equipment (slip and
seal) is available for installation in the POS-GRIP
location if necessary, although not recommended for
HPHT wells.

The POS-GRIP 18-3/4” Adjustable wellhead design allows the
18-3/4” BOP to remain in place through the entire drilling and
testing of the well. This results in far safer operations combined
with up to 100 hours time savings per well compared to conventional technology.
Plexus’ 18-3/4” HPHT POS-GRIP Wellhead is now the standard for
the majority of HPHT Jack-Up wells being drilled in a wide variety
of global locations.
The wellhead is supplied on a rental basis - thus operators do not
have to deal with an inventory of used wellhead equipment. The
value of time savings attributed to the use of this revolutionary
methodology more than offset rental costs, making a very convincing case for the commercial justification in using the equipment.

Recently, on the Hejre-2 HTHP Appraisal Well in
Denmark, ConocoPhillips ran the Plexus Ocean
System 18 ¾” 15 000 psi Surface Wellhead from the ENSCO 101 Drilling Rig. Based on similar o set
wells, ConocoPhillips estimates some sixty - ve (65) hours of time savings by having the ability to
drill and drill stem test (DST) the well without having to install any additional casing/tubing spools.
Associated with this system is the reduction in operati onal risk to personnel by eliminating this work.
The savings were greatest in the DST operation but were also signi cant in the drilling operation.
Once the wellhead was installed on the well, no additional work below th
until
the nal stages of the abandonment.
In an analysis of o set well performance, the Hejre-2 well appeared to save time as follows over
competitor “two-stack/spool” systems:

0.2 M

0M

13 3/8” Casing Point:
9 7/8” Casing Point:
DST:

± 20 hours
± 5 hours
± 40 hours

The time savings are primarily a function of not having to remove the Blow Out Preventer (BOP) to
install a casing (or tubing) spool at a casing point (or in preparation for the DST). Additionally,
comments from the rig crew were very pos itive with regard to the wellhead system.
Prior to DST Operations, the tubing hanger (with metal to metal sealing) was tested to 745 bar (10
800 psi) on initial installation and the hanger performed very well under the HTHP conditions during
testing operations.
