CLINICAL FOCUS
Course: PRACTICAL NURSING Subject Code: Related Learning Experience II (RLE) Hospital duty scope: September 1 - October 30, 2011 (Monday - Friday) Specific objectives At the end of the shift the students will be able to:  Demonstrate knowledge of the basic principles and technical skills necessary to perform practical nursing procedures;  Explain the scopes and limitations of their roles;  Set up the tools prior to the activation of practical nursing care;  Effectively review the patient chart;  Record vital signs on TPR sheet; and  Demonstrate the knowledge on the parts of patient chart. At the end of the shift the students will be able to: Demonstrate knowledge of practical nurse’s role in providing safe and effective care environment prior to laboratory or surgical procedures; Perform assistance to clients who will undergo procedures; Perform basic bed care; and Perform basic supportive care to clients. Supportive care

At the end of the course the students will be able to:  Provide care that assists with the promotion and support of the emotional, mental, and social well-being of clients;  Sustain efficient supportive care; and

 Health practitioner provides therapeutic environment to clients related to diagnostic test and/or surgical procedures through nurse patient interaction;  Assessment of the patient prior to laboratory/diagnostic procedures or;  Recording of vital signs;  Endorsement from ward;  Bringing the patient and chart to the surgical endorsement area;  Returning of student to area/ward;  Endorsement to staff nurse/ clinical instructor; Daily activities:  Health care provider performs morning or bed side care; or  Perform basic linen, bed sheet and cover sheet preparation;  Health care provider performs bed making; and  Reporting of activities

Specific objectives At the end of the shift the students will be able to:  Demonstrate the knowledge on safe and effective care for the client experiencing alteration in health status;  Perform effective bed bath that will promote patient’s well being;  Perform cold/warm compress in acute care setting;  Perform appropriate aseptic and effective wound care; and  Demonstrate the knowledge on preventive-care measures. At the end of the course the students will be able to:  Promote safe and effective care for the client experiencing alteration in health status;  Promote and support the emotional, mental and social well being of clients experiencing an alteration in health; and  Promote the prevention and/or early detections of health problems/concerns of patient.

Subject matters

Methodology  Provide basic assessment;  Provide Tepid-Sponge-bath to patient experiencing increase in thermoregulation;  Provide bed bath on patient with acute and long term disabilities;  Provide cold compress both on patients with post-surgical procedures/post-partum and warm compress on patients with alteration in pain status;  Promote hydration status of clients through effective health teachings;  Perform aseptic technique on wound care;  Perform passive R.O.M. to clients with acute and long term disabilities; and  Promote safe care, preventive measures and aseptic techniques such as proper wearing of mask, gloves and/or gown and proper hand washing.
