TAM Newsletter – November 2010

Microsoft news and product information from microsoft.com and product team blogs

How Microsoft does IT
 How Microsoft IT Uses System Center Virtual Machine Manager to Manage the Private Cloud Real-world
scenarios on how Microsoft IT is utilizing System Center Virtual Machine Manager as a key component of its
management strategy in support of the virtualized data center.
 How Microsoft Reduces Operational Risk through Business Continuity Management Business Continuity
Management (BCM) equips Microsoft IT with operational intelligence to enhance their decision-making
processes, manage risk, and gain a competitive advantage in preparation for adverse situations. Microsoft IT
implements BCM frameworks within the company to ensure maximum employee safety and continued critical
business processes and system availability with the goal of minimizing adverse impacts to Microsoft employees,
customers, partners, and stakeholders.
Security
 Announcing Microsoft Security Intelligence Report version 9 The 9th edition of the Microsoft Security
Intelligence Report was released as Adrienne Hall, General Manager of Microsoft Trustworthy Computing
Communications, gave her keynote at RSA Europe. This time around, we've done a few things
differently. First off - we've dedicated this particular volume to the study of botnets and the role that they play
in the malware world.
 CCM - Our Threat Indices in the Security Intelligence Report At the recent Virus Bulletin 2010 Conference in
Vancouver, BC, the author made a presentation highlighting infection data collected from the Malicious
Software Removal Tool and data collected from Microsoft Security Essentials in its first year. The
presentation (coincidentally on the Security Essentials one year anniversary), entitled "Observations and
lessons learned from comparing point-in-time cleaning against real-time protection", showed the MSRT as a
baseline removal tool to keep the ecosystem clean and called out the end users to run a full AV solution as a
step further to proactively protect themselves from the malware attacks. One of the indices we use as we
examine the results of our removal and protection tools is the CCM (Computers Cleaned per Mille [Thousand]
MSRT Executions) Index.
 The Botnet Superhighway The latest Microsoft Security Intelligence Report (SIR) dedicates a whole section to
botnets and the role they play in today's world of malware, and for good reason - the pathways of the malware
world are quickly merging into a botnet superhighway, a new conduit used for many nefarious purposes.
Microsoft Cloud Services
 Office 365: What is Office 365? Microsoft Office 365 delivers the power of cloud productivity to businesses of
all sizes, helping to save time, money and free up valued resources. Office 365 combines the familiar Office
desktop suite with cloud-based versions of our next-generation communications and collaboration services:
Exchange Online, SharePoint Online and Lync Online. See also: What is Office 365?
 Office 365: The productivity superstore If Office is your productivity supermarket, then Office 365 is like a
productivity superstore.
 Windows Azure: You spoke. We listened, and responded. Today, at PDC 2010, we announced new
Windows Azure functionality that will make it easier for customers to run existing Windows applications on
Windows Azure, enable more affordable platform access and improve the Windows Azure developer and IT
Professional experience.
 Case Study: Lockheed Martin Merges Cloud Agility with Premises Control to Meet Customer Needs
Lockheed Martin wanted to deliver the performance and flexibility of cloud computing to its customers, while
enabling them to balance security, privacy and confidentiality concerns.
Windows Desktop and Server – 7 / 2008 / Vista / 2003 / XP
 Service Pack 1 Release Candidate Now Available Microsoft has made available a Release Candidate (RC)
for Service Pack 1 for Windows Server 2008 R2 and Windows 7. SP1 includes both a roll-up of operating
system updates and several new capabilities for Windows Server.
 Remote Desktop Services: Remote Desktop Connection Broker Scalability Testing Results In our lab tests,
we are able to achieve more than 10,000 individual virtual machine (VM) run-time connections over a two-
hour period. These tests show the range of scale possible with Remote Desktop Connection Broker (RD
Connection Broker).
 Cluster: Evaluating High-Availability (HA) vs. Fault Tolerant (FT) Solutions When evaluating how to increase
availability and reduce downtime for your deployments, solutions can commonly be categorized as either a
'High Availability' solution or a 'Fault Tolerant' solution. In this blog I thought I would take a moment to
discuss pros and cons of each.
 IE: HTML5, Using the whole PC: Sixth IE9 Platform Preview Available for Developers The popularity of the
beta also reflects the early exposure to and extensive impact on IE9 that developers have had. Developers
downloaded the first five Platform Previews over 2.5 million times. The sixth Platform Preview of Internet
Explorer 9, available now, reflects developer feedback and delivers better performance as well as more
standards support, like CSS3’s 2D transforms.
Virtualization Technologies
 Manually Performing P2V Migration for Software Assurance In reading this step-by-step process, you’ll
understand my motivation for wanting to automate the entire process – and these steps only represent a
portion of what the automated tools do in P2V Migration for Software Assurance.
 New Desktop Virtualization Zone We are pleased to announce the release of the Microsoft Desktop
Virtualization zone on Springboard Series on TechNet that provides dynamic information and structured
resources to help you explore, test, pilot, and deploy the latest Windows OS in your environment.
 MED-V: Announcing the MED-V 2.0 public beta I’m happy to announce the availability of the MED-V 2.0
public beta, which you can download now from Microsoft Connect. Let’s take a look at what’s new in this
latest release – features which are largely based on your feedback! See also: How MED-V helps your
migration to Windows 7
 Additional recommendations when using MED-V Workspaces configured for NAT Mode In working with MED-
V and supporting MED-V, I have found that there are three major areas that can be affected when using NAT
mode instead of Bridged Mode with persistent mode MED-V workspaces.
 Hyper-V: Using Hyper-V Differencing Disks with VDI On the Virtualization with Hyper-V Technical Resources
page, we’ve posted the “Virtual Hard Disk Performance White Paper.” This paper contains information about
the performance implications of operations that use a differencing disk with Hyper-V, as well as the pro and
cons of using differencing disks. All the information in this document is relevant to using differencing disks
within a Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) environment. In this post, we cover the specifics of implementing
differencing disks within the Microsoft VDI system.
 App-V: Sequencing Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 with App-V Microsoft will be releasing updates to the
Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 and Microsoft Application Virtualization (App-V) products so that customers can
use App-V to deploy Visual Studio 2010.
 Solution: Multiple uploads and datasheet view features don’t work using App-V virtualized Office 2010 We
took some time and figured out what was needed to make the multiple uploads and the datasheet view to
work.
SQL Server
 Query Performance and multi-statement table valued functions When using table valued functions, you
should be aware of a couple of things.
 Numbers are better than letters… Back in a post from May, I reported that SSRS referenced fields by index
instead of by name in code for performance benefits. As a follow up to that, I decided to do some testing to
demonstrate the performance benefit of this approach.
 PowerPivot: Optimized DataMarket integration available with updated version of PowerPivot Yesterday at
PDC2010, Microsoft announced the RTW of Windows Azure Marketplace DataMarket (DataMarket).
Windows Azure Marketplace DataMarket is formerly known as codenamed “Dallas”.
Exchange Server
 Released: Exchange 2010 Architecture Poster You've been asking us about an Exchange 2010 version of the
popular Exchange 2007 Component Architecture poster. We're pleased to let you know that the Exchange
Server 2010 Architecture Poster is now available for download in all its 36" x 24" goodness!
 Removing specific messages from your Exchange Server Ever so often, an Exchange administrator faces a
situation where messages that fit specific criteria need to be removed from a large number of mailboxes or
from Exchange transport queues. The need may arise due to some sort of mass mailing, a message sent
accidentally to a large distribution group or individual recipients, or it could be one of the steps required to be
taken as a part of cleanup efforts after a mass-mailing virus outbreak (although the latter have been
increasingly rare and generally taken care of by Exchange-aware antivirus scanners).
 Graphical user interface (GUI) enhancements in Exchange 2010 SP1 Exchange 2010 SP1 brings a long list
of improvements. This blog focuses mostly on the GUI enhancements both in EMC and ECP.
System Center
 Windows Azure Monitoring Management Pack Release Candidate (RC) We are pleased to announce the
availability of the Release Candidate (RC) of the Monitoring Management Pack (MP) for Windows Azure
(version 6.1.7686.0), which can be immediately deployed by customers running System Center Operations
Manager 2007 and Operations Manager 2007 R2.
 CM: Configuration Manager 2007 R3 is here The System Center team is very excited to announce the
release of System Center Configuration Manager 2007 R3. This release is a significant accomplishment for
the engineering team for a lot of reasons. Not only does ConfigMgr R3 drive new scenario support to existing
world class capabilities, it raises core functionality to new levels of industry leading status. See Also:

 Troubleshooting Duplicate or Missing SPNs for a ConfigMgr 2007 SQL Database This blog post addresses a
common problem customers face during the installation of System Center Configuration Manager 2007 in
which the following error appears: “Setup failed to install SMS Provider.” When this error occurs, there are
several possible causes, but the first thing I check is Service Principal Names or SPNs.
 OSD: How to add a script to a ConfigMgr 2007 Boot Image This article describes how to create an
unattend.xml so that specific commands or scripts can be executed every time your WinPE boot image starts.
 VMM: VMMUpdate: The easy way to keep your Hosts and SCVMM Server up to date. As a Microsoft Support
Professional I’ve learned that Windows Update is the best way to keep SCVMM healthy. The time to install
updates is not when there is a problem, but before there is a problem. A proactive approach prevents issues.
 SCVMM PowerShell Commands Cheat Sheet Think about this… every single command you perform in the
SCVMM Admin Console can be performed in PowerShell. There isn’t a single thing in the Admin Console that
is not available by interactive command or script. In fact, there are many things that can be done only in
PowerShell.
 DPM: Data Protection Manager 2010 management pack just released – Things you need to know! I must say,
after reviewing the DPM 2010 management pack and reading the guide, I had a lot of questions. But with the
help of the DPM MP team, these were all clarified. Here I will try to shed some light on some of the questions
I think customers will have, and share the main points you’ll need to know before implementing. I highly
recommend first reading the management guide before reading this article.
 New Video: A step by step demo of doing a Bare Metal Restore (BMR) using Data Protection Manager 2010
Our very own Shane Brasher just released a new video, this one covering the steps to perform a BMR (bare
metal restore) by way of DPM 2010 should you experience a catastrophic failure of a Windows Server 2008
computer. You can view it here below or at the link here.
 OM: Trouble with setup due to SQL not being detected? If you have run into issues during setup where you
know that you have a supported version of SQL running on your machine but setup in unable to detect it, you
may have hit a SQL WMI provider issue. In OpsMgr 2007 R2, this shows up as the SQL Server requirement
in the Prerequisite Checker failing.
 Opalis: Opalis Help Files & Documentation - All in One Place! Looks like our very own Charles Joy recently
posted some great links on Opalis Help Files & Documentation.
Office SharePoint Technologies
 SharePoint 2010 Governance Governance is a key component to ensuring the success of your SharePoint
2010 deployment, and one we frequently get asked about it as we travel to conferences and events.
Represented by a set of established processes, procedures, and stakeholders, a well designed and
implemented governance plan promotes adoption, ensures participation, and maximizes ROI. By using the
governance techniques, best practices, and recommendations available below, you can align your policies for
using SharePoint 2010 with your culture and goals while still enabling teams and individuals to effectively
collaborate and share information.
 Backup and recovery best practices (SharePoint Server 2010) Provides information about best practices for
backing up and restoring your SharePoint Server 2010 environment.

when you decide whether to deploy a 64-bit or 32-bit version of Office 2010.
 Office for Mac 2011: Better than a pancake breakfast When I've written about Office 2010 for the PC, I've
been talking about some of the newer features such as Excel sparklines and the Ribbon ( new for some
programs). For you loyal Mac users, sparklines and the ribbon are also part of Office for Mac. But not only
that, *OUTLOOK* (the #1 email software) is now included.
 Access: Office 365 and Access web databases If you've been hearing about the Office 365 Beta that was
announced today, Channel 9 has posted an interview with Business Online Services Director John Betz
(recorded back on the 11th) in which he demonstrates the new offering. If you click on the video timeline at
about 15:20, there's a short demo of how Access Services and Access 2010 web databases figure into the
mix.
 Video introduction to hybrid web applications Larry Strange and the folks at AccessHosting.com have
released a new video showing you how to get started with "hybrid" web databases in Access 2010. A hybrid
database leverages the strengths of both web-compatible objects and client-only objects in a single .accdb
file, and is a great deployment method for those of you using Access Services.
 Excel: Create a bulleted list in a cell For those of you who like bulleted lists and are frustrated that you can’t
insert one in a cell, there is a way to insert bullet points in a cell to emulate such a thing. Just keep in mind
that this isn’t a true list, so you can’t generate more bulleted lines by inserting a new line – you have to insert
a bullet character on each line. That said, here’s how you do it.
 Summarize Spreadsheet Data With Excel's Array Formulas Array formulas provide a way by which Excel
users can discover useful information.
 Outlook: Free online video training courses for Outlook 2010!
 Project: At a Glance: Roles vs. Generic Resources Project Server 2010 supports both resource roles and
generic resources. On the surface, these terms may appear to be redundant.
 Tips and Tricks: Copy custom views, filters, tables, and other elements to other projects After you start
working with Project, if won’t be long before you get creative and start customizing views, tables, filters,
reports, and so on. And it won’t be too long after that when you begin to think about leveraging your creativity
by applying it to all your future projects. Welcome to the Project organizer.
 Enabling Better Collaborative Project Management with Office 365 and Project Professional 2010 Office 365
is a new cloud service that brings enterprise-grade productivity to everyone. I wanted to blog about this news
to explain what it means for Microsoft Project 2010. As many of you know, we offer Project Server 2010 cloud
hosting through numerous partners that many customers are already taking advantage of today. With
SharePoint Online as part of Office 365, we now deliver great collaborative project management in the cloud
through the Project Professional synchronization to SharePoint just as we do today for our on-premise
customers.

look at Word 2010
 OCS / Lync Server and Client: Interoperability Support Between Cisco and Microsoft Products in Unified
Communications The bottom line is that interoperability provides value for our customers. This article,
originally posted on the Communications Server blog, is worth a second glance to discover how Microsoft is
providing this interoperability to our customers.
 Office Web Apps: Using Office Web Apps for the MSFT 2010 Annual Report We're always excited to see
new ways people are using Office Web Apps to share documents. A few weeks ago, Microsoft released its
2010 Annual Report and, for the first time, anyone can view it directly in their web browser using Word Web
App.

Server, grab these SDKs from the Download Center.
 How to tell which version of SQL Server data access driver is used by an application client In a recent
engagement with an ISV, we’ve run into a sporadic application failure problem when the application is
deployed in a mixed environment. It comes down to finding out which version of SQL Server driver the
application uses for connection.
 Optimizing CREATE SET in Cube Calculation Scripts In this blog we will describe an important optimization
that you should apply to cubes that are processed often and have CREATE SET commands in the calculation
script. We will describe the measurements you can make to determine if this may affect you and also provide
solutions that can make your cube be much more responsive to users.
 ECMAScript 5 Part 1: Reusable Code In June, we wrote about IE9’s support for ECMAScript 5 (ES5) and
published a TestDrive demo to explore some of the features. With IE9 Beta available, it’s a good time to talk
about how developers can use ES5 to improve their code. Many of the features in ES5 are designed to help
developers working with very large code bases by making the language both more robust and easier to
maintain. In this series of blog posts we’ll look specifically at how ES5 helps you write more reusable code.
 Testing sites with Browser Mode vs. Doc Mode With site developers verifying that their sites run well in IE9
and taking advantage of the new HTML5 capabilities and better performance in IE9’s Standards mode, now is
a good time to recap how to use Browser Mode and Document Mode to test sites for IE9 and previous IE
versions.
 Expression: Add HTML5 support to Expression Web 4! With Internet Explorer 9 Beta’s deep support for
HTML 5 and the increasing adoption of HTML5 for RIAs, the Expression Web team is extremely excited to
release our free HTML 5 Add-in for Expression Web 4!
 SDL: New Tool: SDL Regex Fuzzer One of the vulnerabilities I’ll be talking about is the regular expression
DoS (or ReDoS) brought to light by Checkmarx researchers at the OWASP Israel 2009 conference. Until now,
the only way to detect ReDoS vulnerabilities was through manual code review. So I’m pleased to announce
the immediate availability of a new tool, the SDL Regex Fuzzer, as a free download. SDL Regex Fuzzer will
evaluate regular expression patterns to determine whether they could be vulnerable to ReDoS.
 Windows Phone 7: Updated Version of Windows Phone 7 Application Certification Requirements Today we
published an updated version of the Windows Phone 7 Application Certification Requirements. As always
you can find them on the AppHub (http://create.msdn.com). Here’s a direct link to the PDF file. The WP7 App
Certification Requirements lay out all the policies developers are required to follow in their WP7 apps &
games.
 Windows Phone People Hub Powered by Activity Streams I’m excited to let you know that the Windows Live
activities on the “People Hub” of Windows Phone 7 are powered by Activity Streams. Yes, the same Atom
Activity Extensions format that I wrote about in August are powering the “what’s new” view on the Windows
Phone 7 “People Hub.”
