Angela Gray mixes top Welsh produce and locations in new venture to showcase Wales at its tastiest

Welsh food writer, broadcaster, consultant and regular TV and radio guest chef Angela Gray is set to share the secrets of her success with a new audience as she launches her own cookery school venture, based at three magnificent locations in Wales. With years of restaurant and cookery demonstration experience behind her, Angela has worked across Europe and beyond in her culinary quest for fine food and has become one of the leading lights in the Welsh food scene. Now Angela wants to put Welsh produce – and Wales’ most glamorous locations – centre stage as she hits the road to share her passion for modern Welsh cuisine. “I’m so excited about the idea of taking cookery courses to different venues and what sensational venues they are,” said Angela. “They are historic buildings, sited in outstanding food producing areas making each course a never to be forgotten gastronomic experience where students will be able to learn the basics or build on their existing skills. We will offer various themed courses designed to be informative and fun – including foraging for seasonal ingredients, using seasonal produce grown in the gardens of the establishments as well as dining in the sumptuous surroundings of my chosen favourite locations”. Angela has chosen Slebech Park, a beautiful Georgian mansion house on the banks of the eastern Cleddau river in the heart of the Pembrokeshire National Park, near Haverfordwest; historic Fonmon Castle in the rural Vale of Glamorgan just outside Cardiff and Ffin y Park country house and art gallery in Llanrwst, in the majestic Snowdonia National Park. Slebech was chosen because of Angela’s long association with Pembrokeshire and the many fine food producers that are based in the area. The house is situated by the Cleddau estuary and is set in 600 acres of natural parkland. Slebech’s historic Dutch style walled garden will provide fresh ingredients for the cookery school. Geoffrey Phillips, the owner of Slebech House said: “We are delighted to be working with Angela, to create a really stimulating series of cookery classes at Slebech Park, where the relaxing environment and the magic of the kitchen gardens will inspire the greater culinary skills of all the participants”.

Quality local producers will be invited to take part, in not only the cookery school activities, but also the local food events and food tours, which Angela’s school will be organising throughout the year. Single participants will be welcome, as will groups of friends, up to the course maximum of eight. There will also be corporate packages on offer to businesses looking for an away day with a difference. These are specifically designed for groups of up to 20 people who can choose from a range of themes. Slebech also offers luxurious accommodation which is ideal for future residential courses planned for 2010, and for extending a stay in Pembrokeshire. Fonmon Castle, near Rhoose in the Vale of Glamorgan has only changed hands once since it was first built in the 13th century and is still privately owned. Backed by woodland and offering extensive gardens, food lovers will be able to enjoy harvesting ingredients from an established culinary and medicinal herb walled garden as well as using the Castle’s crop of seasonal fruit and vegetables. Courses are offered on a non-residential basis with an accommodation list available for those who require it. Ffin y Parc was chosen as the north Wales base for Angela’s cookery school because of its natural beauty, stunning location and the passion for art and fine food that the owners share. The historic country residence is currently being extensively renovated and will be officially launched in Spring 2010. In addition to the cooking courses that will be available there, it is also the perfect base from which to explore the heritage and natural beauty of Snowdonia. The owners have already renovated an original coach house in the 14 acre grounds into sumptuous accommodation, a true indication of what is to come. This makes all three venues ideal for the growing short-break activity weekend as well as locals wishing to participate. “These three venues are steeped in history and have both the space and environment suited not only to running an exciting programme of cookery courses, but to providing a nucleus for other food related activities”, explained Angela. “Teaching cooking, the promotion of local produce and the promotion of the surrounding area as a tourist destination sit well together and this is what we’ll be doing,” explained Angela. Cooking with Angela Gray courses start in November 2009. Prices start from £60.00 for a cookery demonstration and dine day which includes lunch and £135.00 for a full day hands on class. 2/5

Editor’s Notes: Food writer, food consultant and former chef to the rich and famous including Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber, Angela Gray spent eight years globe trotting with her chef’s kit back in the 80s. Angela returned home to Wales and settled in Cardiff. There she pursued a slightly different career in the media world. A degree in Food and Consumer Science together with her extensive knowledge of food formed the basis of what has become an amazing culinary adventure. Angela’s passion for food led to her presenting two cookery series for BBC Wales namely, Hot Stuff and More Hot Stuff, which took the viewing audience on a whistle stop cooks’ tour of Wales. A book followed named after the series, containing all the recipes and anecdotes from the programmes. Angela also presented a series Overnight Success, where she presented the pros and cons of the hospitality business, offering sound advice and tips for setting up and running your own guest house. She has been a live guest on UKTV Food Live and took part in the series Flavours of Britain with Paul Roseby and presented the Welsh leg of UKTV Food Heroes with Gary Rhodes. For two years she presented a radio series on BBC Wales entitled My Life on a Plate, grilling guests like Kim Howells MP, Lowri Turner, Antonio Carluccio, Monty Don, Stephen Bull and John Humphries about what their life and what their favourite menu would consist of. Angela is a regular visitor to the BBC guesting on the Jamie and Louise show where she cooks up a feast of delicious dishes for a celebrity guest using local ingredients. Angela penned a second book The Welsh Cheese Book (Gomer Press) which is a celebration of the wonderful cheeses now available from Wales. This popular little book was recently updated and a second edition printed. Angela has written many food related articles for newspapers and magazines, and had weekly column at Wales On Sunday for two years. Angela also loves cooking in front of a live audience, and is a regular at many festivals around the UK. For the past 11 years she has organized the masterclasses at the Abergavenny food festivals working with the likes of Matt Tebbutt, Sat Baines, Jason Atherton, Stephen Terry, Angela Hartnett, Valentine Warner and many more. This summer Angela organized and managed the food elements for Wales at the Smithsonian Folklife Festival. 1.2 million visitors came to the Washington Mall where 130 participants from Wales shared a plethora of Welsh cultural elements from slate splitting to food. In September Angela completed a new series Packed Lunch for BBC Radio Wales. 3/5
