Winfred “Wimpy” Kenner’s story
may sound like many St. Louis men
of his generation. The Affton resident
graduated from McKinley High School,
served heroically in Europe during
World War II, then returned home to
start a family and work hard at a good
job with McDonnell Aircraft.
Where the 86-year-old differs from
the average person is how he has giv-
en his time to helping others during
his retirement. You can fnd him all
over the city, from Clayton to south St.
Louis County, flling volunteer roles
and supporting the causes he cares
about most. He will be honored with
an Ageless-Remarkable St. Louisan
Award from the St. Andrew’s Resourc-
es for Seniors System at its annual
event on Nov.14.
“I’m not much of a homebody, so I
like to get out and do things as much
as I can. I’m afraid of becoming a couch
potato. And I joke with my kids that it
keeps me out of the taverns,” Kenner
said.
Kenner spends several days a week
making history come alive for visitors
at the Jefferson Barracks Museum,
where he gives tours of the Powder
Magazine. He began volunteering
there when funding for staff dried up.
“A lot of organizations can’t afford
to pay people for these jobs right now.
The Friends of Jefferson Barracks put
out the call fve years ago and we had
87 people step up. But our number is
down to around 65 and we need more
people to fll in,” Kenner said.
During tax season, Kenner helps
with St. Louis County’s Older Resi-
dents Program (CORP) by scheduling
appointments for those who need as-
sistance preparing their forms. He is
a board member of the University of
Missouri Extension Service, where
he works with a group that oversees
spending and programming.
Kenner also serves on the board of
the American Railway Caboose His-
torical Education Society. This means
that he gets to help Santa with holi-
day appearances and assist with train
tours to places like Kansas City and
Chicago.
“I think the best thing about me
getting this award is that it will give
a little publicity to the organizations
I work with,” Kenner said. “I’ve often
said that they are the best kept secrets
in St. Louis County. There are people
who live within a few miles of the mu-
seum and don’t know it’s there or who
have never heard of the train tours.”

St. Andrew’s Resources for Seniors
is hosting the Eighth Annual Ageless-
Remarkable Saint Louisans Gala
which will honor 19 area seniors over
age 75 on Nov. 14 in the Chase Park
Plaza’s Khorrasan Ballroom. Wells
Fargo Advisors is the presenting spon-
sor.
These honorees include Betty Von
Hoffmann, a former long-time Kirk-
wood resident, Winfred Kenner of Af-
fton and Joseph Birk Jr. of Webster
Groves.
The gala will celebrate the com-
mitment, vivacity and generosity of
these individuals and their amazing
contributions to the St. Louis commu-
nity well past traditional retirement
age. With varying backgrounds, tal-
ents and vitality that would put most
40-year-olds to shame, the honorees
are defying the stereotypical idea that
individuals fall into “restful retire-
ment” as they grow older.
“We again get the pleasure of rec-
ognizing a group of incredible seniors
who are redefning what it means to
grow old,” said Mary Alice Ryan, presi-
dent and CEO of St. Andrew’s. “St. An-
drews has a vision of a society where
all older adults are respected, produc-
tive, secure and fulflled; our mission
is to empower seniors and their care-
givers through choice and options that
foster a vital life. We chose these el-
ders as individuals who personify our
goals and we applaud them for demon-
strating that age is truly nothing more
than a number.”
St. Andrew’s is non-sectarian, faith-
based and expert at serving both older
adults and their caregivers.

Andrews or the gala, visit www.stan-
drews1.com or call 726-0111.

Joe Birk of Webster Groves is a
living confrmation of the advice that
parents often give their children: “Get
a law degree because you can do so
many different things with it.”
Since beginning his professional
career with Union Electric (later Ame-
renUE) in 1948, Birk has served in
various capacities for countless St.
Louis non-profts during some of their
most exciting phases.
He was there to help during the for-
mation of Area Resources for Commu-
nity and Human Services (ARCHS).
He played a vital role in extending
the life of the Emergency Children’s
Home (ECHO) in North St. Louis.
And, after completing some high-
profle legislative work on behalf of
his employer, Birk was tapped by lo-
cal movers and shakers to be a part of
a little project that would become the
Edward Jones Dome and the reloca-
tion of the Rams from California to St.
Louis.
Because of these efforts and many
more, Birk will be honored with the
Ageless-Remarkable St. Louisan
Award from the St. Andrew’s Resourc-
es for Seniors System at its annual
event on Nov. 14.
“I’ve always had a feeling that I
ought to give back because I’ve been
very blessed in life. I was able to go to
school and thought there were a va-
riety of things I had expertise in that
could be used to make St. Louis a bet-
ter community. I really look for ways
to add something that’s meaningful,”
says Birk.
Some of the other organizations
that have beneftted from Birk’s exper-
tise include CORO Midwest, The Saint
Louis Art Museum, the Regional Com-
merce and Growth Association, the
United Way, the Missouri Chamber of
Commerce, and the Supreme Court of
Missouri Historical Society.
He currently serves on the board of
directors for Bethesda Health Group
and is a member of two committees
that support the work of Variety the
Children’s Charity of St. Louis.
“It’s personally enriching to talk
with those who are out there, to learn
about their services and how they go
about their work. You get a tremen-
dous education on how people live and
depend on others. It’s inspiring time
spent,” Birk said.
He encourages others to get in-
volved with volunteer work because
he believes that the way to progress is
through ideas, opinions, and debate.
“There are a lot of people out there
who have a lot of ability, good ideas,
assets they can bring to the table, and
they’re untapped,” Bick said. “I would
tell them to look at what interests them
and keep learning because they’ll fnd
it very rewarding.”

by Amanda Cook
When the lights dim and the curtain
rises on each new season at Stages St.
Louis, there is one lady who feels the
joy and excitement of opening night
more acutely than any other audience
member.
Betty Von Hoffmann has dedicated
the past 24 years to making her son
Michael Hamilton’s vision of a not-for-
proft professional theatre company
a reality. And she couldn’t be more
proud of the results.
“I volunteered to help society, my
community, and people in the theatre
world. I went to New York and saw
how badly they treated all these young
people who wanted a career on Broad-
way,” Von Hoffmann said, a former
long-time Kirkwood resident. “I knew
that we were going to have a theatre
where everyone was welcome to audi-
tion and become part of a family work-
ing together.”
She will be one of 19 honored on
Nov. 14 with an Ageless-Remarkable
St. Louisan Award from the St. An-
drew’s Resources for Seniors System.
Stages St. Louis started operations
out of Von Hoffmann’s fve-room Kirk-
wood home in 1987. Tickets and sales
were handled in the living room, one
room served as an offce, costumes
were sewn in the basement, and sets
and props were created in the back
yard.
Since then, the theatre company
has grown to a $3.2 million annual
budget with over 9,000 subscribers
and 46,000 patrons. They also have a
professional academy that trains stu-
dents in musical theatre arts.
“I was attending one of our events a
few years ago and a young lady asked
my son if he would introduce us. She
had received one of the scholarships
that I helped coordinate and she want-
ed to let me know how much I had
touched her life,” she said.
Von Hoffmann’s volunteer work
started early in life with the Salva-
tion Army. She said she joined with
her two sisters as a way to make her
father proud.
She came from a long line of peo-
ple who wanted to give back: her
grandfather immigrated from Europe
and, once he became successful with
a printing business, created a soup
kitchen in downtown St. Louis to help
the homeless.
She thinks his genes, as well as les-
sons in hard work and making a good
life for the family, are what shaped
her views on the world.
“I live for people and trying to help
them, especially my two sons. I’m a
very happy person and believe I was
put on this Earth to try to bring hap-
piness to others. I am a giver, not a
taker,” said Von Hoffmann.

Gala.
There are currently 40 million peo-
ple (12 percent), age 65 and older in
the U.S. according to the U.S. Census
Bureau.
Although “65 and up” has tradition-
ally been viewed as “old age,” that per-
ception is changing due to the increas-
ing infuence of Baby Boomers.
Today’s older adults are single-
handedly bringing about a culture
change — demanding more control
over their lives, becoming more social-
ly active and engaged, living more ac-
tive lifestyles and living much longer
lives than just a few decades ago.
The frst of the “Baby Boom” gener-
ation (people born between 1945 and
1964) just turned 65 this year, which
means retirement for many in this co-
hort. In fact, very few individuals over
the age of 65 still participate in the
work force.
From a fnancial perspective, how
can adults approaching retirement
age prepare themselves for this impor-
tant transition? Are there any legal
concerns specifc to this stage of life?
What roles do continuing education
and life-long learning play in adjust-
ment to retirement? And how can one
remain occupied and meaningfully en-
gaged after leaving one’s work?
Eric Goedereis, Ph.D., an assis-
tant professor of Psychology at Web-
ster University and is the director of
Webster’s graduate program in ger-
ontology, will address these issues
at Webster University’s 22nd annual
Gerontology Workshop set for Friday,
Oct. 15, at the university’s Sunnen
Lounge. The workshop runs from 8:30
a.m. to 2 p.m., and costs $50, $25 for
seniors and students. Fees include
lunch.
The Volunteer Fair, from 2 to 3:30
p.m., is free and open to the public.
The workshop is recommended for
retirees and other adults who are con-
cerned about approaching this stage
of life and meeting the challenges of
retirement. It is equally appropriate

scribing the construction of the World
War II GI statue, which was dedicat-
ed last August in Jefferson Barracks
Park, a short distance from the monu-

The Battle of the Bulge monument
was dedicated in October of 1997 and
is located between the Powder Maga-

Both the monument and the GI statue
were built through the efforts of the
Gateway Chapter of the Veterans of
the Battle of the Bulge, which was
founded in 1993 and has over 300 ac-
