Grandparenting With Joy,
Happiness & Gratitude
Pam Berra of Crestwood named one of
10 best grandmothers in Missouri
by Linda Jarrett

Being a good grandmother comes
naturally to most women, but being
voted one of the 10 best grandmothers
in Missouri is high praise, indeed.
When Crestwood resident Pam
Berra was asked to drop by her friend
Terri Schuchard’s house one day last
August, she had no idea what
Schuchard had in store for her.
Earlier in the summer, Schuchard
had taken pictures of Berra and
Berra’s 4-year-old grandson, Daniel,
on the pretext of wanting to make a
photo collage. Berra assumed she was

going to see the results when she visited Schuchard.
“I asked her if she had finished the
collage and she told me that was a lie,”
Berra said. “Instead, she said I had
been voted one of the 10 best grandmothers in Missouri. I just couldn’t
believe it.”
The “Show Me Missouri’s 10 Best
Grandmothers” contest was sponsored
by the Magic of Marceline Development
Company in Marceline, Mo., the hometown of Walt Disney. When Schuchard

Pam Berra gets hugs from her grandchildren, from left, Alex, 6; Daniel, 4; and
Molly, 9.

Grandmother Pam Berra: She Just Keeps Going
from page 11
heard of the contest, she decided that
if anyone was worthy of that honor, it
was Berra. Schuchard wrote an essay
describing Berra and why she should
be one of the 10 best, and submitted it
to the contest.
Berra’s daughter, Abigail Faith,
died in 2013 after a long illness, leaving behind a 2-year-old son, Daniel.
Berra assumed guardianship of the
boy, and finds herself at age 62 raising
her grandson, who is now 4.
The Berras lost another daughter,
Rebecca, in 1995. She drowned in
Guam while serving in the Navy.
In addition to Daniel, Berra and her
husband, Steve, who has Parkinson’s
disease, have two other grandchildren:
Alex, 6, and Molly, 9, children of their
son Dan and his wife Laura.
Top 10 Grandmother
As Daniel hopped around the living
room, laughing all the while, Berra
explained that they have told him that
his mother is in Heaven.
“He’s so much like his mother,” she
said. “Except she was very quiet and
very shy, but Daniel never has a quiet
moment. He talks nonstop and is so
active.”
When asked what made his “Mimi”
special, Daniel paused a moment, then
said, “She plays swords and reads stories to me, like ‘Thomas the Tank
Engine.’”
Alex said that Berra “fixes my broken toys and makes bags for me to put
my stuff in.”
Molly thought awhile, then said,
“She plays lots of games with us and

she comes to my dance recitals, and we
have sleepovers in the living room
with lots of blankets.”
Besides dance recitals, Berra
attends the grandkids’ ballgames, and
indulges Daniel’s love for trains with
regular trips to the Museum of
Transportation.
Berra
works
for
Creative
Communications for the Parish, a firm
that publishes religious material, and
belongs to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church
in Des Peres.
When speaking about raising a
4-year-old at this stage in her life, she
said, “You don’t think about it, you
just do what you have to do, what all
of us parents do.
“Of course, you don’t always make
the right decisions, as is part of motherhood,” she said. “Without God in my
life, I couldn’t do it.”
The winners of the “Show Me
Missouri’s 10 Best Grandmothers”
contest were selected on the basis of a
one-page written essay. Entries were
judged on values-oriented attributes,
such as character building, independence, self-reliance and family ties.
“Grandmothers are foundational in
transmitting values to their children
and grandchildren,” said Mike Wrenn,
CEO of the Magic of Marceline
Development Company. “Holding the
gala celebration in Walt Disney’s boyhood hometown is intended as a
reminder of the compelling values that
inspired Disney, and through him,
children around the world.”
The awards were given at a dinner
on Sept. 26 at the Walsworth
Community Center in Marceline.
Berra was there with 14 of her friends

and family, who were eager to celebrate with her.
Coincidentally, Berra has always
been a Disney fan.
“I would always watch ‘The
Wonderful World of Color,’ and
admired him all my life,” she said.
Husband Steve is very proud of his
wife.
“Everything they say is true for all
our 42 years,” he said. “I’ve always
thought of her as a combination of
three famous people: Sacagawea
because she loves the outdoors, Mother
Teresa, the caregiver, and Calamity
Jane because she has a habit of overdoing things – like the time she wanted to wax my ’65 Chevy Impala, and
used floor wax. God made her for me.”
Her son, Daniel, said she is mentally and emotionally the strongest person he knows.
“Probably pound for pound physically, too,” he said. “She just keeps
going and we give her help when we
can while she focuses on Daniel and
our kids.”
For the contest essay, Schuchard
described her friend Berra in heartfelt
terms.
“Looking in from the outside, her
life seems like one of only hard work,
service and follow through,” she wrote.
“However, you have to know Pam. She
does what she does every day with joy,
happiness and gratitude. Most importantly, she has on the inside what
counts – the ability to do whatever is
necessary to make her dreams for herself and her family come true. That is
why I think that she is, undoubtedly,
one of Missouri’s 10 best grandmothers.”

Now at Lutheran Senior

years in ministry Oct. 25

“I love God and I love people. That
became my mission – to touch people
with Jesus Christ for healing and
service.”
Holding firm to that mission,
Rev. Walt Schoedel, director of
Church Relations at Lutheran Senior
Services (LSS) and emeritus pastor
at Concordia Lutheran Church in
Kirkwood, celebrates his 65th year of
ministry in October.
“It’s not every day that someone
has the opportunity to celebrate
this long of a career in ministry,” he
said. “I have found more and more
congregations interested in wanting
to reach out to older adults. So what
a blessing that at LSS I can help
congregations bring spiritual and life
fulfillment.”
And with such a length of tenure,
Rev. Schoedel holds a wide grasp
of knowledge. As well as having
served on the Kirkwood Chamber of
Commerce, the Kirkwood Rotary, the
Kirkwood YMCA’s Board of Directors,
and the Webster Groves Round Table
Older Adults Group, Rev. Schoedel
led several congregations before
finishing his parish ministry in 1991
at Concordia Lutheran Church in
Kirkwood.
“I didn’t think of my time ending in
parish ministry in terms of retiring,

“I didn’t think of my time

-Rev. Walt Schoedel
but as a repositioning. I wasn’t going
to become a couch potato. I wanted to
use my gifts to help my peers have a
fulfilled retirement,” he said.
Moving from Concordia Kirkwood
to Lutheran Senior Services was a
natural fit.
“LSS is a part of my inner-gut

feelings. They’ve made it possible for
me to continue my passion,” Schoedel
said.
As director of Church Relations,
Rev. Schoedel focuses his efforts on
reaching out to congregations, pastors
and the community.
“I feel privileged to be part of the
LSS mission of Older Adults Living
Life to the Fullest, not only here but
throughout the county. My message
has been that you have to look at
the gifts and experiences of those
older adults around you. There are so
many who have untapped gifts for a
meaningful ministry,” he said.
From his quarterly newsletter
“Engaging the Aging,” to guest
preaching
and
lecturing,
Rev.
Schoedel has been an inspiration to
others for the joy and fulfillment that
can come with aging. He and his wife
Lee have a heart for mission that also
extends to family.
“Son Mark is an engineer who, as
he was growing up, saw the church
and its ministry first-hand. Now as
the vice president of construction and
IT at LSS, he uses his background
to make a difference in the lives of
older adults as well,” he said. “Plus
he’s just down the hall and that’s nice
too.”
Rev. Walt Schoedel will be
recognized
at
Lutheran
Senior
Services and Concordia Lutheran
Church in Kirkwood on Oct. 25 for his
65 years in ministry and continued
impact.

Jane Towater
by Don Corrigan

Kirkwood resident Jane Towater’s
long history of dedication to racial justice and community service has been
recognized with countless honors,
most recently the “Ageless-Remarkable
St. Louisan” award given by St.
Andrew’s Center.
During her tenure as the Associate
National Executive Director of the
YWCA USA (Young Women’s
Christian Association), Towater
worked both nationally and internationally for women’s equality and for
the elimination of racism.
“I certainly didn’t do it by myself,”
said Towater, who at 87 years young is
still an outspoken dynamo. “I worked
alongside the late civil rights leader
and YWCA Racial Justice Director
Dorothy Height on a variety of national projects. I learned from her.
“I highly recommend her book,
‘Open Wide the Gates of Freedom,’
which describes the Freedom Summer
in Mississippi and being at Martin
Luther King Jr.’s side during the
March on Washington. She also talks

At 87, Kirkwood woman remains dedicated

about our projects in the book.”
Among Towater’s YWCA projects:
constructing a school for girls and
women in Turkey; providing milk cows
for families in Africa; encouraging
equal rights for women in countries
with repressive governments.
Following freedom fighter Nelson
Mandela’s release from prison,
Towater explored the many needs of
non-profit organizations in South
Africa that worked for a peaceful transition from the long years of apartheid.
“The YWCA was in 91 countries
when I was an associate director, and
in many of those countries we were
dealing with basic human needs, not
recreation,” said Towater. “It was a
matter of helping people to survive.”
Towater served with the YWCA
from 1968 to 1995, although she
remains with the organization as a
consultant and volunteer.
Prior to joining the YWCA, Towater
also played an instrumental role in
developing the groundwork for inner-

Ageless-Remarkable St. Louisan from page 16
“We don’t have
enough people
who are disturbed
by the inequality
and the injustice in
our society.”

city street theater in Detroit following
the violent civil disturbances in the
city in the 1960s.
Early in her career, Towater was
the youngest executive director ever of
the Girl Scout Council in Tennessee in
the 1950s. While with the Girl Scout
organization, she built a multi-racial
board and worked to integrate the
organization’s many camp offerings.
Today, the “Ageless-Remarkable
St. Louisan” continues to address
human rights issues as a volunteer
with the YWCA. She is also involved
with Junior League Sustainer Council
and active with the Women’s Society
of Washington University.

Saddened by Ferguson
A transplant from Jackson, Tenn.,
and now a proud St. Louisan, Towater
said what we have learned in the
aftermath of events in Ferguson shows
we have a long way to go on the civil
rights front. Among her observations:
• “We have got to stop profiling. We
see people of a different color, or with
a different religion, or from a different
neighborhood, and we make faulty
assumptions. We have to end profiling.
• “We don’t have enough people
who are disturbed by the inequality
and the injustice in our society. If
everything in our own backyard seems
okay, then we are satisfied with the
status quo.
• “We are on a counterproductive
cycle in this country in that we only
react to problems when there is disor-

der or a disturbance. Then, we wake
up. We need to be fully open and honest about our situations all the time.
• “We have too many hate groups
in this country. I belong to Southern
Poverty Law Center, which has identified hate groups all over America and
a number of them in Missouri. We
need to stand up to hatred.”
As a leader herself on women’s and
racial issues, Towater is not shy about
offering up some viewpoints on current American political leadership.
“I think President Obama is an
American citizen who is doing the best
he can do,” said Towater. “What he
has done is not enough. I think when
we get down the road a few years from
is presidency, we will realize just how
much racism came out during the time
of the first black President.”
On the battle that has already commenced for the U.S. Presidency for

- Jane Towater
2016, Towater is shaking her head
like many Americans over developments with both political parties.
“It’s all about Donald Trump now.
On Trump, I don’t like his personality,
his showmanship, his methodology,”
said Towater. “But to his credit, he
has brought up things no one wants to
really talk about.
“One of those things is how much
money is in politics and how it buys
what contributors want,” said Towater.
“He has put down politicians on both
sides about this, and he wants everyone to know he has so much money he
cannot be bought.”
Many Needs To Address
For one of the richest countries in
the world, Towater said America and
states like Missouri have a lot of
needs, whether in the area of health
care, helping the homeless and work-

ing with the abused. She praises the
work of the YWCA in addressing the
needs.
“We have had a housing program to
rescue the people out on the street,”
said Towater. “We have had aid for
education to help young mothers trying to balance jobs and school, and
health care programs for their kids.
“Right here in Missouri, one out of
seven women has suffered from some
form of sexual abuse in their lives,”
said Towater. “The YWCA is providing
programs to address that.”
Even at 87, Towater finds the
wherewithal to volunteer in the organization’s programs. She said people
over 65 in America still have plenty of
years to contribute to a better America,
and the retirement years don’t have to
be all about bridge and dominoes.
The over-65 population in America
will rise from 12 percent in 2000 to
almost 20 percent in 2030. Towater
said there is plenty of untapped talent, energy and enthusiasm in that
age bracket.
“That’s why I am looking forward to
seeing who will be chosen as the 2015
“Ageless-Remarkable St. Louisan,”
said the 2104 Ageless-Remarkable St.
Louisan from Kirkwood.
The 2015 honoree will be awarded
at a 6 p.m. dinner on Nov. 15 at the
Hyatt Regency St. Louis at the Arch.

Public Transit & Walking With Ten Toe Express

Christine A. Gilsinan
ATTORNEY AT LAW

Citizens for Modern Transit
(CMT) has launched the fall session
of its Ten Toe Express program,
which helps older adults integrate
walking with public transit to explore
many of the region’s cultural and
entertainment hot spots.
Walks range from 0.3 to 5
miles, depending on the group and
destination. Walking groups meet at
MetroLink stations and take Metro
transit to the destination. Walks are
in a variety of places such as Forest
Park or Carondelet Park, downtown
St. Louis or the Delmar Loop. Groups
often finish at a unique shop or stop
for lunch or a snack before heading
back.
This time around, the organization
has teamed up with Great Rivers

Seniors Home Care’s Mary Baker: “Outstanding Older Worker”
At 82 Baker works as live-in home care companion

Mary Baker holds the certificate she
received as a Missouri Outstanding
Older Worker,” along with her client
and the client’s two daughters.

Mary C.

Mary K.

Mary Baker, a “go-to caregiver” at
Seniors Home Care, LLC in Webster
Groves, was recently recognized
as one of Missouri’s Outstanding
Older Workers during festivities in
Jefferson City. This marks the 25th
year for the celebration honoring
older workers and the value they
bring to today’s workforce.
At Seniors Home Care, Baker, age
82, works as a home care companion.
Her work includes around-the-clock,
live-in care, four days a week, for her
87-year-old client with significant
memory impairment. She lives in the
South County/Lemay area.
A representative from MERS/
Goodwill, the regional coordinator

Mary!

of the program, presented Baker
with a certificate naming her the
Outstanding
Older
Worker
of
Missouri in the St. Louis Region. She
is one of 10 winners from regions
across the state.
Baker is widely praised for her
heartfelt approach to assisting
clients, one of whom was in
attendance at the ceremony.
Following the presentation, the
client’s daughter added, “We love
Mary. She doesn’t just tend to their
needs, but to their hearts. She has
really been a blessing for us.”
This is the 25th anniversary
year for the contest, which honors
Missourians who are at least 60

years old and gainfully employed at
a Missouri job site. Winners were
honored in September at a two day
awards ceremony in Jefferson City.
“On
average,
older
workers
represent 15.5 percent of our state’s
workforce,” said Diane Chambers,
Missouri state director for Experience
Works,
a
national
nonprofit
organization operating the Senior
Community Service Employment
Program in 104 Missouri counties
and one of this year’s organizers.
“Their strong work ethic, wealth of
experience and dedication greatly
impacts the way Missouri does
business and this is the perfect way
to celebrate that.”
