Get Moving

Seniors discover fitness & more at local YMCAs
by Marty Harris

When it comes to exercise, South County’s Art
Bernabo advises senior adults to start moving.
“The body is made to move. You have to use it,”
said Bernabo. In 1998, Bernabo took his own advice.
He made a lifestyle change to be more active.
“I eased into it, moving to some degree,” he said. “I
probably did consistent walking first – five to seven
times a week like 20 to 30 minutes.
“The idea that you can maintain cardiovascular
health by doing (exercise) two to three times a week
does not work for most people,” he said. “The more
you move it (the body) within reason is the healthy
approach for your body’s joints, body tissue and your
general attitude. A person just feels better.”
This 75-year-old’s active lifestyle includes, among
other things, teaching at the South County YMCA.
There he leads classes in exercise, personal training;
Livestrong, a program for cancer survivors; and a diabetes prevention program. In 2013 he earned a nutrition and dietetics degree from Maryville University which he also puts into practice.

For senior adults who want to get started on a
exercise routine, Bernabo said that SilverSneakers
classes at area YMCAs are an excellent place to start.
“Some health insurance plans will pay for the
YMCA membership for the person who has that
health insurance,” said Bernabo, who is also certified
to teach SilverSneakers classes. “These classes are
terrific and they are crowded.”
SilverSneakers is one of the largest senior-focused
exercise program in the United States.
Glendale’s Janet Hindle agrees.
For 25 years, she had an active job at Westwood
Catering before retiring last year. Knowing it’s important to keep active, she attends the Tuesday
and Thursday SeniorSneakers Yoga class at the
Kirkwood YMCA with her neighbor Mary Walker.
At the Y, Hindle found a “wonderful” group and a
slower-paced class that provides a soothing, all-over
workout.
“Exercise is what it’s all about,” Hindle said.

Miss my old house?

I didn’t want to
miss out on this!

Meet Jo Wilhelmi. She loves traveling. Long walks with her dog,
Neenah. Convenience and security. What she didn’t love was
upkeep on her four-bedroom home. Or worrying that her kids
were worried about her.
So Jo chose Aberdeen Heights. “I moved and never looked
back. I look forward to every day, and that’s a great feeling.”
What could your life be like at Aberdeen Heights?

Senior Fitness Classes
from page 1B
Webster Groves found the SilverSneakers Classic class more to their
liking.
They get an all-over cardiovascular
and strength-building workout while
listening to oldies tunes like “Johnny Angel” and “Breaking Up Is Hard
To Do.” The Tuesday and Thursday
classes, led by instructor Mary Beth
Wilczak, use hand-held weights, elastic tubing and a SilverSneaker ball. A
chair is available for some seated exercises and for support if needed.
Juzenas, 64, said she likes the cardio component of the class the best.
She and O’Neill also take a similar
class that Wilczak teaches on Mondays at the Webster Y.
“I can go home and feel that I’ve

Michael Gibbons Sr., front, and Janet

Yoga class.

worked out,” she said. “I’m definitely
more productive when I go home.”
O’Neill, 75, noted you can make the
classes as hard as you want.
O’Neill and Juzenas are regulars
at the Y. In addition to Wilczak classes, Juzenas said she just discovered a
Zumba class with fun music and moves
that are very aerobic.
“I really rely on the Y to get my cardio workout. I walk my dog but he’s
getting older so that’s not much exercise anymore,” Juzenas said. “The people here are wonderful. This is a very
warm, welcoming place to be.”
Before retiring as a teacher from
Lindbergh High School, Juzenas said
she didn’t have much time for exercise.
“I dedicated all my time to teaching,” Juzenas said, noting she did
dance on Saturday nights until her ankles started bothering her.
When O’Neill retired he decided to
get back to exercise. He had started
running when he was 38 and did other
exercise until he was about 55.
About nine or 10 years ago, O’Neill
started taking Wilczek’s Monday class.
Now he has a “menu” of Y activities
from which he tries to do three or four
times a week. In addition to the Wilczek’s classes, O’Neill walks Tuesday
and Thursday mornings with a “very
interesting group” from the Y. After
their three-mile walk, the walkers
meet at Straubs for a “coffee klatch.”
Teaching Seniors
Wilczak, a Kirkwood resident, has
been teaching exercise since 2000. In
2002 she started teaching the Silver
Streak class at the Webster Y. She also
teaches yoga, step classes and others.
“I enjoy working with the people

who come to SilverSneakers,” she
said. “They seem to be at a place in
life where they have time to stop and
smell the roses.”
The classes become not just physical exercise but a social outlet, she
said. “I like that they come and make
friends.”
One size does not fit all when it
comes to an exercise regimen, she said.
“It depends on what they want to
get out of it (the class) and their particular health status,” Wilczak said.
Juzenas, for example, has diabetes
and finds the cardiovascular workouts
help to keep her blood sugar in balance, Juzenas said.
Bernabo advises some level of aerobic activity to begin a exercise program.
“That might be starting on a treadmill. It depends on how active they
currently are,” he said.
Bernabo cautioned individuals not
to overdue it initially and to be adequately hydrated before exercising.

Another consideration is the condition
of their athletic shoes.
After 500 miles (equals working out
three to four times a week for six to
nine months), shoes break down and
the feet do not get the support they
need, Bernabo said, noting this increases the risks of getting foot ailments such as plantar fasciitis.
Sitting Home; Feeling Lousy
For Wilczak it’s very gratifying
when her students come up after class
and tell her when they get good news
from their doctor – that their blood
work was great, their cholesterol is
down or they can now take less medication.
People also come up after class and
tell her that they had to force themselves to come to class because their
shoulders or knees hurt. But after
class they’re glad they came.
“They get moving and feel better
instead of sitting home and feeling
lousy,” she said.

Striving Toward An

AGE-FRIENDLY Community

St. Louis County moves toward action plan to address aging population
by Kevin Murphy

It’s called the St. Louis County Age-Friendly Communities
Initiative, complete with an 80page “quality of life” assessment
for the 433,695 older adults living in St. Louis County — about
43 percent of the county’s total
population.

Called “Aging Successfully in
St. Louis County,” the massive
report provides a detailed profile
of St. Louis County’s older residents — from age, health and
economic demographics to the
availability of affordable housing, transportation and senior

services, to name just a few.
“As a member of the
Age-Friendly Communities Network affiliated with AARP and
the World Health Organization,
St. Louis County government
has made a commitment to conduct a baseline assessment of
the age-friendliness of the community,” according to
the report.
The report focuses
on the Baby Boom generation, born between
1946 and 1964, and
the
Silent/Greatest
generation born before
1946.
N u m b e r i n g
284,201, Baby Boomers represent the largest generation in St.
Louis County. Combined with those born
prior to 1946, St. Louis County is the oldest
county in the metro
area with a median
age of 39.9. St. Louis County is home to
nearly 40 percent of
the metropolitan region’s seniors who are
65 and over.
The Age-Friendly Communities Initiative explores the many
implications of the county’s aging population. A four-prong
strategy “to support a thriving
and aging community” is now in
place:

•  Linking seniors with health
and social services;
• Providing adequate housing and neighborhood options for
people, whether they live within
their homes or relocate within
their communities;
• Providing
infrastructure
that enhances mobility in supporting the independence of an
aging population.
•  Ensuring the continued social, civic and economic engagement of an aging population.
Insights from the 80-page report will form the basis for upcoming community discussions.
Those discussions will help
guide the county toward priorities and recommendations for
its Age-Friendly Communities
action plan.
One such public strategy session was held in November in
Richmond Heights, with more
than 70 people in attendance.
The next meeting of the county’s Citizens Advisory Taskforce
is Wednesday, Jan. 21, at the
St. Louis County Library Headquarters, East Room, 1640 S.
Lindbergh Blvd., running from
9:30 to 11 a.m.
Lori Fiegel, comprehensive
planning manager for the county, said the county expects to
have a plan in place by June of
this year.

FREE

Women Live Longer
In St. Louis County, of the
284,201 Baby Boomers, 53 percent
are women and 47 percent are
men. While this mirrors the county
population as a whole, the gender
gap widens as people grow older.
Of the 149,500 residents 65 years
and older, 59 percent are women
and only 41 percent are men.

Racial Diversity
The county’s population is 71
percent white and 23 percent African American, but Baby Boomers
are about 77 percent white and
20 percent African American, and
those born before 1946 are 83 percent white and only 14 percent African American.

Income Insecurity
Overall in St. Louis County, slightly more than one-third
of all senior households face income insecurity. This equates to
about 19,800 senior households,
or 23,800 seniors living below the
Elder Index threshold to meet
their basic needs. Of these 23,800
seniors, 9,500 lived below the poverty level in 2012.

Life Expectancy
The overall life expectancy in
the United States in 2010 was
78.7 years. White females have
the highest life expectancy at 81.3
years, followed by African American females at 78.0 years, white
males at 76.5 years, and African
American males at 71.8 years.

Grandparents & Grandkids Share Special Bond
A growing number of grandparents
are called on to provide child care for
their grandkids.
A University of Chicago analysis
based on interviews with 13,614
grandparents found that 61 percent of
grandparents provided at least 50
hours of care for their grandchildren
during any given year between 1998
and 2008.
Grandparents often cite helping
their own children financially, as well
as staying in touch with grandchildren
as motivating factors behind providing
care.
According to Generations United,
staying in touch with grandkids can
give seniors a feeling of self-worth and
improve their overall health.
When spending so much time
together, grandparents may develop

Christine A. Gilsinan

special relationships with their grandchildren, who may benefit from the
knowledge and wisdom offered by their
elders. The following are some lessons
grandparents can share with youngsters.
• Empathy: By sharing stories of
how things were when they were

younger, when opportunities may have
been more scarce, grandparents can
help teach grandchildren empathy.
• Family history: Grandparents can
tell grandchildren about family members, including youngsters’ own parents, and shed light on the generations
that came before them.
• Interests: Children may be excited about learning new skills or hobbies
taught to them by their grandparents.
• Respect: Children who grow up
respecting their grandparents may
have an increased tendency to respect
authority figures outside their homes.
Grandchildren also offer benefits to
their grandparents. Companionship,
new experiences and conversation can
help keep grandparents’ minds sharp
and bodies active well into their golden
years.

Pets often make ideal companions.
They are around when a person needs
support, they can provide protection
for those living alone, they’re always
willing to lend an ear to problems, and
many tend to offer unconditional love.
Seniors facing an empty nest or the
loss of a spouse may find pets can buoy
their spirits. Studies have shown that
seniors can benefit both mentally and
physically from having a pet around.
Pets can alleviate anxiety, depression
and boredom.
While pets can provide comfort and
companionship, they remain a significant responsibility. Seniors should
find an animal that fits in with their
lifestyles. This is an important consideration for those seniors who travel
frequently or have mobility issues.
Individuals living in senior communities or assisted living should see if any
pet restrictions are in place.
Those seniors who have decided
that a dog will be the best fit can
choose among several breeds that may
be a good match for their needs. When
selecting a dog, consider both size and
temperament. Smaller dogs tend to be
easier to handle and will need less
maintenance.
Smaller dogs also consume less food
than larger breeds, reducing the
expense of dog food and the hassle of
wrangling large, heavy bags of chow.
Temperament is also important.
Some breeds tend to be more easygoing than others. Larger breeds may be
preferable to a smaller breeds, which
tend to be hyperactive. However,
always remember there are pros and
cons to each breed, and each dog has
his own personality traits. The follow-

ing are some traits of some dog breeds
that can be compatible with seniors.
• Pug: Equally playful and willing
to be a lap dog, the pug requires little
exercise and grooming. The breed is
typically non-aggressive and submissive. Pugs are good-natured and playful; they don’t often bark and are easy
to train.
• Shih Tzu: The Shih Tzu lives for
attention, but this breed can be dominant and difficult to train. The Shih
Tzu will be alert to its surroundings
and, despite its small stature, can be a
good watchdog.
• Pomeranian: Pomeranians look
like big balls of fur. The breed tends to
be perky, can display dominance and
can be difficult to train. They can be
dog-aggressive, so they may be best as
the only pet in the house.
• Yorkshire terrier: The Yorkie is a
diminutive breed in size only as they
tend to have exuberant personalities.

The ideal lap dog, Yorkies want to
lounge around, though some do like to
bark. If the fur is kept short, the dog
can be easy to maintain.
• Pembroke Welsh Corgi: This
medium-sized dog hails from Wales
and typically requires only moderate
exercise and little grooming. They are
easy to train and moderately dominant. They don’t bark excessively, and
they often get along with other dogs.
• Schnauzer: Available in three
sizes, Schnauzers are good companions and protectors. This is an intelligent and loyal breed and will need to
be kept amused to stave off boredom.
•Brussels Griffon: These dogs do
not shed, but require professional
grooming at least once every three
months. If socialized early, the Griffon
can be a good companion but will likely
remain wary of strangers. They are
good watchdogs and devoted to their
owners.
