Creating and Sharing Your Digital Story

Part 1: An Overview of our ongoing 2014 - 2015 Professional Development Series on Digital Storytelling. Instruction: (5 minutes) Using the Google Presentation titled: Pro D: Introduction the Administrators of the High School will co-present the focus of this year’s Professional Development Release Days. During this presentation they will also highlight the reasons and rationale for this topic choice as well as the form and process that each of the sessions will take. A collaborative Google Doc will be shared at this time with all members of the faculty for learners to post questions and answers during the sessions. The Administrators will divide the learners into the three groups (Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced) before transitioning into the next part of the PD session. Part 2: Introduction to Digital Storytelling Instruction: (10 minutes) Using the Google Presentation titled: Introduction to Digital Storytelling the HS Tech Coach will facilitate an introduction to Session 1 centering on the benefits of Digital Storytelling. This Presentation will be shared with each member of the faculty as there are links to Digital Storytelling samples on the second last slide. Part 3: Introduction to iMovie Instruction: (45 minutes) Our school has an Academic group subscription to Lynda.com that allows teachers access to all of the content on the Lynda.com website. This PD session is going to leverage this service to provide users with a basic understanding of the user interface and functionality of iMovie. Learners will log into the sign-on page and access the video tutorial: iMovie 10.0.2 Essential Training. The instructor will be sure to emphasize one of the latest improvements in Lynda.com functionality: the trasncript. By using this feature, learners will be able to not only follow the video, but the text of the narration, to better understand the tutorials being presented. During this 45 minute independent work session, learners will view just under 40 minutes of tutorial footage by accessing the following videos: ● Section 1: Importing Video ○ Importing from a memory-based camera (2m 55s) ○ Importing video files (1m 34s) ○ Capturing live action (1m 26s) Section 2: Understanding the Interface ○ Interface overview (4m 41s) ○ Browsing events in the iMovie Library (3m 35s) ○ Selecting and adding clips to a project (7m 1s) Section 3: Organizing Clips ○ Organizing events (2m 57s) Section 4: Editing Video ○ Creating a new project (1m 28s) ○ Adding clips to the project (7m 33s) ○ Trimming and slip editing (3m 6s) Section 5: Working with Photos, Transitions, Titles, and Effects ○ Incorporating photos (5m 52s)

The videos listed above are intended for the Beginners group. Learners who have been placed in the Intermediate or Advanced groups will be encouraged to explore the more advanced features of iMovie by viewing the more advanced videos in Sections 1 through 5 and exploring Section 6: Working with Audio.

Part 4: Brainstorming a Digital Story Instruction: (10 minutes) Learners will divide themselves into small groups of 3 and begin brainstorming ideas for their Digital Story. They will make a copy of Brainstorming document in their Google Drives and use it to help them determine a topic for their Digital Story. Once the learners have determined a topic, they will transition to Part 5 of the session and follow the To Do steps in compiling resources related to their topic. Learners may do this independently or in small groups. Part 5: Creating and Sharing Your Digital Story Instruction: (45 minutes) Learners will continue to work given time to work independently, or in groups, and given the task of creating a short 2-5 minute digital story that incorporate audio and either video or still images. Once the digital story has been completed, learners will watch the Lynda.com tutorial “Exploring the other sharing options” (5m 19s) under Section 7 Sharing Your Movies from the iMovie 10.0.2 Essential Training video series. Learners will then share their video by loading it to YouTube and adding their link to the Google Doc titled: Video Repository. Verification: Steps to check for understanding:

1. Learners will demonstrate their understanding of using iMovie to import and organize

content into a cohesive story telling about something. 2. At the beginning of the next session, in November, the facilitator will conference individually with faculty members during their planning time to discuss how they might be able to incorporate some of the skills and ideas presented in the October PD Sessions into their curriculum and instruction. The HS Tech Coach will track this information and present the data at a follow up meeting with the school administration prior to Session 2. Notes The teacher, or IT Department, will need to have configured each workstation prepped and ready to go. The IT Department will also need to expand the space of each of the teacher’s roaming profiles from 500MB to 3GB. The IT Department will also need to pre-load the iMovie exercise files required for the tutorial sessions into the roaming profiles of each teacher. The files are just under 900 MB in size. Groups will be established from the Needs Assessment conducted via Google Form. Learners will be divided into three groups: Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced. The Administration will need to review and practice the introduction presentation to ensure quality of delivery. The HS Tech Coach will share this document with all participants as it includes all links to files related to this PD Session. The HS Tech Coach will need to ensure that this Needs Assessment is sent out prior to Session 1. Responses are collected here and can be used to establish the groupings (Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced).
