While doing student teaching at Brookview Elementary, the Literacy coached trained myself and the other student teachers on Jan Richardson’s methods of Guided Reading. We shown how to set up our lessons and use Jan’s structure and activities to build fluency, accuracy, comprehension and expand vocabulary with all levels of readers.
1st Grade Assessments While in my 1st Grade placement, I was trained by the literacy coach and my mentor teacher on how to administer mCLASS assessments by using the iPad App. I was also trained on how to do DIBELS assessments and running records by using the iPad and paper assessments.
Intermediate Grade Assessments While teaching 7th Grade Language Arts at Lynhurst 7th & 8th Grade Center, the school was a pilot school for Aquity and I was trained on how to administer the test by the Language Arts Department Head. I also administered Aquity Tests in my 4th Grade placement at Brookview Elementary. At Lynhurst, I was requested to attend an RTI meeting during which AIMSweb data was analyzed and used to make decisions on interventions of one of my students. At Brookview Elementary, I conducted DRA assessments and stayed on a progress monitoring schedule with my students. This assessment is very similar to the miscue analysis I did with my focus student during field work. Overall, DRA progress monitoring is a wonderful tool to use to help track a student’s progress as a strategic reader.
Smart Boards and Prometheon Boards: At Lynhurst 7th & 8th Grade Center I was trained by the Technology supervisor on how to use Prometheon Boards and programs because they were a piolot school and every classroom had one. This was a great experience and I soon wondered how teachers ever did anything without them! iPad has several wonderful educational Apps that we used on our classroom iPad in my 1st grade placement. We also did mClass and DIBELS, and running records assessments on the iPad. In 4th grade, we used Skype in a distance learning experience with a real life geologist! It was fantastic to use this video program with our smart board, the experience was unforgettable!
