PSA
When you hear the term “PSA” it means “prostate specific antigen.” Basically, it is a protein produced by the cells of your prostate gland, and elevated amounts of it usually means there is some kind of problem down there (anything from it being enlarged or infected to full blown cancer). Your doctor can check it with a simple blood test. However, there are some things you should know about these tests. Especially if you value your prostate gland’s health. The most important thing you should realize is just because your numbers are high does NOT always mean there are any problems going on. On the other hand, low numbers don’t always means everything his fine, either. Fact is, a PSA test is just one of many ways to determine prostate health. It used to be the “gold standard” test. But nowadays that is changing. Especially since, over the years, there has been a lot of unnecessary prostate surgeries and removals due to people assuming high numbers meant there was a problem. Does that mean the PSA test is worthless? Not at all! What it does mean is, you don’t want to rely on the numbers as anything but an indicator of possible prostate problems. Generally, you want to see your numbers trending down each time, and not up.
