Max. Marks: 100

Note: Answer any FIVE full questions, selecting at least TWO full questions from each part.

PART - A
1. a. With a neat sketch discuss about single point cutting tool nomenclature.

8

b. A seamless tube is turned orthogonally on a lathe. Other data given are : - outside diameter of
the tube = 20 mm, Rake angle = 20°, Speed = 300 rpm, Feed = 0.11 mm/rev, Cutting force ;
185 N, Feed Force = 75 N, Length of the chip after one revolution = 33.35 mm. Determine;
(i) Co-efficient of friction

12

(ii) Shear plane angle
(iii) Chip thickness
(iv) Velocity of chip along tool face.
2 a. Sketch and explain forms of tool wear. Also explain the parameter that affects tool life.

10

b. In machining a mild steel work piece with carbide tool the Life of the tool was one hour and
twenty minutes at 40 mpm. Determine the tool life if it were to operate at a speed of 30%
higher than initial cutting speed. However when CBN tool was used to machine mild steel

10

work piece at 55 mpm tool life was same (one hour twenty minutes). Calculate the tool life
when speed is 20% lesser than the initial speed. Assume Taylor’s exponent n = 0.28.
3 a. Explain the desirable properties of cutting tool materials.

10

b. Describe functions and desirable properties of cutting fluids.

10

4 a. Explain with a neat sketch saddle type turret lathe?

10

b. Explain tool layout for hexagonal headed bolt in a capstan and turret lathes.

10

PART - B
5 a. Differentiate between shaper and planer.

5

b. Sketch and explain the following shaping operations;
(i) Angular Shaping

10

(ii) Cutting keyway
c. Determine the time required to cut a plate of dimension 500 x 1000 mm, if the cutting speed
is 8.2 m/min. The return time to cutting time ratio is 1:4 and feed per cycle is 3 mm. The
clearance at each end is 60 mm.

5

c. A 10 mm hole is to be drilled through 25 mm thick plate. The cutting speed is 10 m/min and
the feed rate is 0.12 mm/rev. Estimate the machining time where over travel plus clearance

5

for the tool is 4.5 mm.
7 a. Sketch and explain;
(i) Slot milling

10

(ii) Angular milling
(iii) Form milling
b. Sketch and explain simple indexing mechanism and with suitable example explain simple
indexing method.
8 a. Explain various types of bonding materials of Grinding wheel.
b. Give the complete classification of grinding machines.

10

4

c. Explain the following with sketches;
(i) Lapping

8

(ii) Honing.
