DESCRIPTION EQUIPMENT
Detailed knowledge of properties/limitations/application of all climbing and abseil equipment and natural/fixed anchors All climbing equipment (including helmets) rated to relevant UIAA and/or CE standards Policy: equipment checked at each use and maintained or retired as required. Ropes and slings maximum life 10 years (top rope), 5 years (lead) Carry spare clothing, food, water, group outdoor first aid kit, rescue equipment. Well maintained vehicle
ENVIRONMENT
Bombproof anchors: check fixed anchors at each use; upgrade when needed Check for poor quality/loose rock/sharp edges No unroped climbing above head height (feet) Helmet zone within 8m of cliff face, backup belayer, belayer awareness, climber awareness and communication (important briefing at beginning of session) Effective group management Appropriate route selection Instructor line of sight to all routes
Ability to efficiently and safely access and bring down student from any part of the crag without physical or emotional trauma. Skill and experience in all aspects of high angle terrain recovery. Head Instructor: Dave Brash, Dunedin Climbing Ltd. Professional rock climbing instructor, with several hundred days’experience teaching groups at local outdoor venues since 1995. Current approved outdoor first aid qualification NZOIA Stage 2 Rock Climbing Instructor and Assessor B.App.Sci. (Human Movement), Diploma of Education Other Instructor: Jess Marriot (022 6417089): NZOIA Stage 2 Rock Climbing Instructor Award, graduate of Otago Polytechnic School of Adventure Diploma Programme, current approved first aid qualification, with extensive training and experience with groups at this venue Qualifications and experience exceed EOTC Guidelines
2 Groups of students per day, sessions starting 10am and 12.15pm. Wet weather call will be made at 7am on the day A minimum of 3 adult helpers per group is recommended. Adults will be taught to belay the students Students to bring warm clothing, parka, food, water, sunscreen (and camera) School to inform instructor of any special needs/medical conditions
Adults will be taught to belay the students; no previous skills are required
