Devoting himself to the rare
coin and precious metal trade
for well over three decades,
Westerling’s commitment to the
customer is second to none. From
their Roseville office, he and his
associates offer purchases and
appraisals for estates, banks, insur-
ance companies and individuals.
“My staff and I are dedicated
to helping people preserve and
grow their wealth,” Westerling
explains. “That’s why The Truman
Company offers personalized ser-
vice tailored to each individual.”
Introduced to the business by
his Uncle Truman, a young Roger
became enamored with coins. This
nearly-lifelong passion encour-
aged Westerling to open his own
business under the Truman name.
“Every time he visited my fam-
ily, he gave me a coin that had an
interesting history. His hope was
that I would develop a real inter-
est in rare and unusual coins, and
it worked,” Westerling says with
a smile.
Westerling visited Minnesota to
appraise a collection in 1998, and
was so touched by the welcome he
received he decided to move both
his home and business to St. Paul.
He currently works with about
3,000 clients around the country.
Westerling is a life member
of the American Numismatic
Association and holds an A+
rating with the Better Business
Bureau.
His knowledge can reassure
people that they’re insuring or
pricing such items correctly. “I’m
more than happy to visit a home
or bank to review a collection,”
Westerling notes. “There’s a mar-
ket for everything!”
Though old coins appreci-
ate gradually, precious metals
have undergone dramatic spikes
over the past decade in value,
Westerling adds. From 2002 to
2013, the value of silver went up
by 668 percent and gold by 595
percent. Many of Westerling’s
customers are currently trans-
ferring individual retirement
account funds from banks to a
precious metal IRA.
“I honestly think the prices
for gold and silver will con-
tinue to rise throughout our
lifetime, while the U. S. dollar
declines, ” Westerling explains.
“Transferring to a precious metal
IRA can be an excellent invest-
ment. ”
Customers will feel at home
in The Truman Company office,
where they might even meet
Westerling’s pooch, Sonny, and
his wife, Donna, a Twin Cities
artist whose work is featured
throughout the office.
Curious about the worth of
a personal collection? Roger
Westerling and his staff at The
Truman Company are ready to
help.
The Truman Company: a valuable
source for coins and precious metals
T
rust and confidence are
key in the coin indus-
try, and customers
from all over Minnesota and the
U.S. have found an extraordinary
guide in Roger Westerling of The
Truman Company.

This is a look at the variety of coins and pieces in The Truman
Company’s collection. With 37 years’ experience in the field,
Roger Westerling can appraise and handle a wide range of
inventory.
Roger Westerling was introduced to coins at a young age by his
Uncle Truman, a numismatist for whom the company is named.
Westerling is as passionate about coin collection as his custom-
ers, making them feel right at home when they visit The Truman
Company.

Ramsey County Fair 2013 Page 3
It’s a tradition at the century-old
Ramsey County Fair to look back
— to the nation and the area’s rural
heritage, to the value of growing and
preserving foods and making useful
arts and crafts — and to the wisdom
the older generations have passed
down.
This year’s fair will again note an
outstanding senior of the year, with
one man and one woman honored
on the fair’s main stage at 2:30 p.m.
Sunday, July 14.
Past honorees are people who
didn’t “retire” to inactivity but
chalked up hours of volunteerism in
a variety of venues: elected office,
historical societies, business net-
works, sports boosters, youth groups,
park and conservation organizations
and even German bands.
Seniors who are noted at the
county level are then considered
for statewide recognition at the
Minnesota State Fair. Past county
winners who were also honored
as the state outstanding senior
include Ronald Erickson and George
Rossbach.
Make the gathering on Sunday
afternoon a priority, to applaud
people who’ve paved the way and
continue to give of themselves.
Admission to the Ramsey County
Fair, which squeezes everything from a
petting zoo to scream-worthy rides onto
its tiny site, is always free. And it gets
even better from there.
With the big 100 in mind, Ramsey
County Fair organizers offer an
“Anniversary Package” for $10 that
gets the purchaser a large full-color but-
ton, a free ride ticket and the 36-page
“Historical Journey” book. It’s available
at the Fair Office and author’s signing
tent Friday from 5 to 7 p.m., Saturday
from 2 to 4 p.m. and Sunday from 3 to
5 p.m.
The fair’s website says people can
check in to the Ramsey County Fair
with the popular mobile phone appli-
cation Foursquare and use their smart
phones to check-in at various locations
around the fairgrounds for specials.
There will be Foursquare flyers dis-
played at participating areas.
The Ramsey County fairgrounds are
located at the intersection of White
Bear and Frost avenues in Maplewod.
Admission to the fair is free.
The midway rides will be open
Wednesday and Thursday from 5 p.m.
to 11 p.m.; Friday and Saturday from
noon to 11:30 p.m. and Sunday noon
to 9:30 p.m.
The arm band special (weekend
only) will be $22 each day for all rides;
Friday 6 p.m. to 10 p.m., and Saturday
and Sunday noon to 5 p.m.
Advance discount carnival ride tick-
ets are five for $10 and available now
until July 10 at the following locations:
Maplewood and West St. Paul Plaza
TV & Appliance stores; Maplewood
City Hall; Maplewood Community
Center; Maplewood Premier Bank;
North St. Paul Library; North Star
Bank; Perkins, 1829 North St. Paul
Road in Maplewood; Ramsey County
Care Center; Roseville City Hall;
White Bear Lake City Hall; White
Bear Press; and County Commissioner
Victoria Reinhardt’s St. Paul office.
The advance discount ride tickets
can be used any day.

Help celebrate a century...
This year, the Ramsey County
Fair is celebrating an important mile-
stone — its 100-year anniversary!
You read that right. The fair started
its run in 1913 in White Bear Lake,
and despite economic fluctuations, the
loss of family farms, changing attitudes
and fairground relocations, has only
missed one year in the last century, due
to a polio outbreak in 1947. According
to headlines in the Ramsey County
Review, not only were fair activities
and community celebrations canceled
that year, but school opened two weeks
late in order to prevent disease spread.
Joe Fox: nearly half a
century with fair
Organizer Joe Fox is excited to cel-
ebrate the centennial year of the fair-
after all, he’s been helping organize
the Ramsey County fair for 47 years,
nearly half of the annual fairs. He has
been the fair manager for 28 years and
been on the board of directors since
1966.
Fox has been a fair mainstay since he
was a boy. He showed his first sheep at
the Minnesota State Fair in 1938.
And his enthusiasm for the county
get-together hasn’t dimmed over the
years.
See the classics
Fox said this year, the fair, which
runs from July 10-14, will be bringing
back a few recent crowd favorites, such
as the youth pet show, and expanding
events that have been popular in the
past.
“This year, we’re having two car
shows,” Fox said. “There’s the regular
car show, like we’ve had in the past,
and we’re also adding a show with just
Model A and Model T cars from 1932
and before.”
Dan Nordstrom owns a 1913 Ford
Model T that will be on display
throughout the fair. He says he enjoys
sharing his antique vehicle with the

car stands ready in front of the build-
ing should there be any emergencies.
At left, this aerial view of the Ramsey
County Fairgrounds, taken from a plane
in 1953, shows the fair was right at
home in what would become suburban
Maplewood. For years, it had been sur-
rounded by the farmland that separated

Paul to the southwest.

public and explaining its historical
context. And he’s committed to the
upkeep needed to keep a century-old
machine on the move.
“I believe these cars are meant to
be driven, and they’re meant to be
shared,” Nordstrom said. “A lot of peo-
ple walk by and say, ‘Oh, yeah, that’s
an old car,’ but I like to explain the his-
tory behind it.
“Most people don’t realize that a
Civil War veteran could have owned
this car,” he added.
The antique car show will be held
Saturday, July 13, from noon to 4 p.m.
The Ramsey County Fair Annual
Cruise-In car show will be Sunday,
July 14, from noon to 4 p.m. There
will be an awards ceremony for the
top 10 cars in the classic car show at
3 p.m.

Above, it appears Ramsey County fairs our parents
and grandparents may have attended were more
modest affairs than today’s fair, with its light-
decked, multi-story rides and attractions. At left,
a well-to-do — and thoroughly up-to-date — family
might have driven this 1913 Model T to the fair in its
inaugural years. Dan Nordstrom, who owns the car
and will show it at the fair’s antique car show, keeps
it in running condition in order to be able to show
modern motorists how we got around in the old
days. This one, restored in green with red trim — the
last year Henry Ford allowed customers to order
their Ts in colors — had a 20 hp engine and might
have been able to hit a hair-raising, spine-jarring
40some miles per hour.

The Mitchell Showboat
Marionettes return to again delight
families with their puppet show.
Combining ventriloquism,
stringed marionettes, hand puppets
and more, the show is scheduled
to “explode” from the decks of
the troupe’s elaborate Mississippi
Riverboat puppet stage each day of
the fair, July 10-14.
Master ventriloquist and pup-
peteer Nancy Mitchell, the second-
generation star of the show, and
her husband Jack oversee a fast-
paced variety show featuring their
custom-made trick puppets.
Also appearing daily will be
Millie the Monkey, a full-sized,
animatronic, talking chimp puppet
who rides around on its bicycle,
striking up conversations with pass-
ers-by!
In addition to the puppet shows,
kids can learn the basics of ven-
triloquism and even make their
own puppets at a workshop with
Mitchell Marionettes Friday, July
12 at 1 p.m.
The Mitchell Marionettes shows
will take place:
Wednesday, July 10: 8:15 p.m.
Thursday, July 11: 6:30 and 8:30
p.m.
Friday, July 12: (1 p.m. work-
shop), 3, 6:30 and 8:45 p.m.
Saturday, July 13: 12:30, 3, 6:30
and 8:45 p.m.
Sunday, July 14: 2:30, 4:30 and
7 p.m.

Above, local marching bands blast
popular tunes up and down the street
during the WBABA Parade. At left,
everyone loves a parade, and the White
Bear Avenue Parade is a perennial
favorite. This year’s parade lines up at
6 p.m. Wednesday, July 10 at Ivy Avenue
and heads north starting at 7 p.m. The
parade will end at Aldrich Arena just
north of Ripley Avenue. Make sure you
get to the curb early to claim a good
spot, as the spectacle draws marching
bands and parade units from all over
the metro area, as well as crowds.
This year’s White Bear Avenue Parade is putting
the spotlight on the centennial anniversary of the
Ramsey County Fair.
Lisa Theis, community organizer for the White
Bear Avenue Business Association, said this year,
the parade is trying to “really highlight and show-
case 100 years of the fair.”
Even the number of units participating in
the parade is symbolic! About 100 units are cur-
rently signed up to march north down White Bear
Avenue from Ivy Avenue to Aldrich Arena, near
the site of the Ramsey County fairgrounds.
Of those units, eight are musical units, ranging
from radio stations to marching bands, so wear your
dancing shoes and be ready to bust a move!
The parade is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
Wednesday, July 10, and run until about 9 p.m.
Theis said the parade typically draws between
10,000 and 12,000 people, if the weather is favor-
able - sunny and not too hot. Parade-goers should
arrive early to secure a good spot for nabbing candy.
“Everybody should come see the parade,” Theis
said. “It’s a really great community event.”

Avenue Parade, visit www.wbaba.com/parade.htm.

Did you know the Ramsey
County Fair was canceled in 1946
due to a polio outbreak that infect-
ed one out of every 2,649 residents
in St. Paul?
That’s just one of many interest-
ing facts included in a new publi-
cation commemorating the 100th
anniversary of the county fair.
History buff Jim Lindner takes
readers on a journey of the fair’s
past in his 36-page booklet “Down
Through the Years,” starting with
its founding in 1913 in White Bear
Lake to its present-day location in
Maplewood.
“I want to share my understand-
ing of the historical perspective of
the fair,” said Lindner, who lives
in Gem Lake. “The people who go
to the fair now can learn the 100-
year history of it. If someone was
transported from now to 1913, they
wouldn’t recognize the fair then.”
The fair has a tale to tell. It
began as an agricultural hub where
farmers showcased their produce
and livestock, serving as an educa-
tional venue as well.
As the rural parts of Ramsey
County gave way to suburban liv-
ing during the 1950s, the fair had
to adjust its events to appeal to
a new generation of visitors and
emphasize more creative arts activi-
ties and shows rather than agricul-
tural.
The fair was forced to relocate
after the White Bear Lake School
Board purchased the fairgrounds to
expand its school facilities in 1953.
The following year the fair took
place on the grounds of what was
then known as the Ramsey County
Poor Farm on White Bear Avenue.
Lindner said he was struck by
the fair’s resiliency during his
research. The county has seen
many demographic changes over
the decades, and while the fair
remains connected to its agricul-
ture past, there is more emphasis
on family-orientated entertainment
now, Lindner said.
He dedicated approximately 60
hours to researching and writing
the booklet, which includes pho-
tos that he found in newspapers,
as well as some of his own photos
from past fairs.
Joe Fox, Ramsey County Fair
manager, said the booklet adds to
the fair’s 100-year celebration. “He
did a good job. ... It shows really
how agriculture has changed and
county fairs.”
Lindner will be signing copies
of “Down Through the Years” dur-
ing the Ramsey County Fair July
10-14. Visit www.ramseycountyfair.
com for more information.
Booklet commemorates 100-year milestone
Jim Lindner compiled a special commemorative booklet about the Ramsey County
Fair’s century mark to illustrate the big changes the fair faced along the way
— and the many ways it’s kept its traditions.
