Software Modeler with floating licenses
Purpose
This how-to document should help you to download, install and configure the software required to run an
IBM Rational eclipse-based product with a floating license. As example, this document explains the
various steps for the IBM Rational Software Modeler product. These steps are also valid for the following
other IBM Rational eclipse-based products: IBM Rational Software Architect, IBM Rational Method
Composer.
Pre-requisite(s)
•
You should have an IBM ID. When making use of services made available through the web by IBM, you
often have to identify yourself. In such situations, IBM will request your IBM ID. To obtain such an ID, go
on the IBM website and click on the “Register” option available on the top-right side of the welcome page
and then specify your details in the registration wizard that will be displayed.

Obtaining the software
To obtain the IBM Rational software, there are several possibilities:
• When you wish to evaluate a new IBM Rational product release without having the need to evaluate the
features that require a floating license (eg. the evaluation of IBM Rational RequisitePro without IBM
Rational RequisiteWeb) then use the IBM developerWorks trial downloads page to download your
software.
• When you have either (i) bought an IBM Rational product but didn't received (yet) the “Proof Of
Entitlement” required to obtain the software through the IBM PassportAdvantage Online tool, (ii) wish to
perform an evaluation of a product requiring the use of a floating license (eg. IBM Rational
RequisiteWeb or the IBM Rational FlexLM License Server), then use the ”Rational Product Releases”
public page to download the the software.
• When you have purchased the product and received the “Proof Of Entitlement”, then use the “Passport
Advantage Online” online tool for customers to either download the software you're entitled for, either
request a physical media (CD/DVD) with the software to install.
• When you have to download either a product fix or free product like the IBM Rational Installer, then use
the IBM support portal.
Using IBM developerWorks (dW)
The IBM developerWorks (dW) website is typically used by non-IBM customers or existing IBM customers who
decide to evaluate a specific product (which is not yet installed in their install base). When downloading a
product from IBM developerWorks, you also obtain an evaluation key valid for a specific period of time. The
provided evaluation key is always a seat-specific licence (FlexLM node-locked license or an authorized user
license key). This seat-license restricts which software product features can be evaluated. For example, it isn't
feasible to perform an evaluation of Rational RequisiteWeb since it requires a floating license to run. If you need
to evaluate such a capability, then contact a local IBM Rational Sales representative to discuss your needs or
check the Rational Product Release public page.
Example: Downloading Rational Software Modeler 7.5 for a trial
To download IBM Rational Software Modeler 7.5 for a trial period, select the Rational Software Modeler product
from the product list available on the IBM developerWorks trial downloads page. Then specify which method of
download you which to use: either using an installed instance of the IBM Installation Manager for an online
installation, either using HTTP of the Download Director utility to perform an offline installation.

If you chosed the “Download Director or HTTP” method for an offline instllation then select the proposed release
of the product and click on the “Continue” hyperlink located at the end of the page. Since you requested a
download for a trial period, IBM wishes to track the reasons of your trial. So on the next page, specify the
reasons of your download request and confirm you agree with the applicable license terms.

On the next product specific page, by clicking on the tabs, select either “HTTP”, eiher “Download Director” as
method to download your product. The Download Director is often prefered since it allows multiple concurrent
download streams, faster downloads and allows to resume previously paused downloads.

If you chosed the “Download Director” method then: select the product release(s) to download (you may select
more than once), confirm your acceptation of the license agreements and then click on the “Confirm” link to start
the download with DownloadDirector. The download progress will be monitored through the Download Director
tool.

If you chosed the “HTTP” method then select the product parts to download (only one selection at a time) and
click on the “Accept” link next to the product part you wish to download. The download progress is then
monitored through your web browser “Downloads” window.

Once the software is downloaded, save it in a place that is accessbile from the workstation where the product
should be installed .
Using the Rational Product Release page
On the IBM website, the Rational Product Release public page lists the various latest product releases that are
available. Specific products that are using exclusively floating licenses are available on this page and not on IBM
dW. For example, The FlexLM License Manager can't be downloaded from IBM dW but is available on the
Rational Product Release page.

To download the FlexLM License server 7.1, select the appropriate product in the Rational Product Release
public page (note: you will have to specify your IBM ID) and click on the “Continue” hyperlink located at the end
of the page.

Example: Downloading Rational Software Modeler 7.0.5
To download Rational Software Modeler 7.0.5 using the the Rational Product Release public page, you follow
exactly the same procedure as explained previously for the FlexLM License Server.
Important note: At the time of writing this document, it appears that the Rational Product Release public page
only offers the download release 7.0.5 of the IBM Rational Software Modeler product although the latest version
is 7.5. If you need the latest release, use the IBM developerWorks Rational trial download page.
Using IBM Passport Advantage Online (PAO) tool
When you, or one of your colleague purchased a specific IBM Rational product, the handling of your Purchase
Order by IBM will lead to the generation of “Proof Of Entitlement” document sent by IBM to your organization.
Within that “Proof Of Entitlement” document, IBM will communicate you:
• the “site number” of your company
• the name of an individual working for your company that is considered as the “primary contact”.
By “primary contact”, IBM means the person within your company that has been designated as the individual
who got granted the rights to login into the “Passport Advantage Online” web tool and to administer the access to
it. When a “primary contact” is logged into the “Passport Advantage Online” online tool for customers, (s)he can
add additional colleagues (“secondary contacts”). When you don't have access yet to the tool and know you
aren't the primary contact for your company, you may self-nominate yourself as a contact. The primary contact of
your company will then have to confirm your access request. When having access to the online tool, both the
primary contact and the secondary contacts, will have the possibility to either download the software their
company is entitled for, either request a physical media with the software.
Using the IBM Support portal
The IBM Support portal is THE place where you _as IBM Rational customer_ will able to find: the links to IBM
Rational forums or local Rational User Groups, technotes explaining known problems and resolutions, product
documentation and updates (fixes). Some common used products like the IBM Installation Manager is also
available from the IBM Support portal. To access all information related to the IBM Rational Installation Manager,
go to the IBM support portal and search for that product or go to the IBM Installation Manager Support page.

Installing the software
Installing the FlexLM License Server software
Once you downloaded the binaries of the “IBM Rational FlexLM License Server”, copy the files on the computer
that will have the role of your license server and run its installer (install.exe) located in the
“\disk1\InstallerImage_win32” folder. If you never installed a Rational product on the targeted computer,
the installer will inform you that it will install both the “IBM Installation Manager” and the “IBM Rational License
Server”. Click on

Rational FlexLM License server successfully installed
Once the software is installed, we suggest you to record the identity of your server (see the section “Record your
FlexLM License server identity”) since that information is necessary when requesting floating licenses from the
IBM Rational License Key Center.
Record your FlexLM License server identity
To allow the License Key Center remember which floating license has been installed on which server, there 3
ways to record the identity of your server:
• using the disk id of the server,
• using the ethernet address,
• using the host ID.
When your server is running on a windows box, you can choose between ethernet address or disk id. Both
information can be retrieved, once connected on your server, either using the “IBM Rational License Key
Administrator” or running the “hostinfo.exe” utility.

Installing Rational Software Modeler
Once you downloaded the binaries of the “IBM Rational Software Modeler” product, unzip the files under a
common directory so that you end-up with two folders: “RSM_SETUP” and “RSM”. The “RSM” folder containing the
files issued from the various product disks (eg. “disk1”, “disk2”, …), the “RSM_SETUP” folder holds the product
launcher and the “IBM Rational Installer” product.
Start the “Rational Software Modeler” launcher (launchpad.exe) located in the “\RSM_SETUP” folder.

After having specified the language for your installation, select the option “Install IBM Rational Software Modeler”
to install the product. If this the first IBM Rational product installation on the workstation targeted to be the host
for Rational Software Modeler, then you will have to first install the IBM Rational Installer. Click on

Manager
Once the launcher has been restarted, on its startup screen, select the “Install” option . The IBM Installation
Manager will propose you two products: the “IBM Rational Software Modeler” product and the “Rational Team
Concert – Client for Eclipse IDE” product. Since you wish to install IBM Rational Software Modeler, select at
least the first option. The second option is recommended when you decide to use Rational Software Modeler in
combination with a Rational Team Concert environment. If you need more info on how these tools are integrated,

Retrieving floating license(s)
Request temporary floating license(s)
In case you have a purchase order currently under process at IBM and didn't received yet your Proof-OfEntitlement for the IBM Rational software purchase but you wish to already install the product and eventually
start the usage of it using a floating license then through the Rational Product Release public page and the
“Rational support – Temporary License Key” page, you can respectively request the download of a product
release and request a temporary license keys.
Retrieve your permament floating license(s)
Permanent floating licenses can be obtained by customers through the IBM Rational License Key Center.

After you're logged into the License Key Center, select the “Get keys” option (available on the left-side of the
page) and then select the hyperlink specifying the product for which you're wishing to retrieve a floating license.
In case of IBM Rational Software Modeler, depending the details of your purchase, you will see a list of license
key types you may request. You could see as license key types for that product:
• “IBM Rational Software Modeler – Floating License Key”,
• “IBM Rational Software Modeler v.7.5.4 Activation Kit”,
• “IBM Rational Software Modeler v.7.5 Activation Kit”,
• “IBM Rational Software Modeler v.7.0.5 Activation Kit”,
• “IBM Rational Software Modeler v.7.0 Activation Kit”.
Since, this paper describes the usage of the floating license, select “IBM Rational Sofwtare Modeler – Floating
License Key”.
When you have done several sales order regarding the product, the License Key Center will show a list of the
various sales orders/products that are linked to the product for which you are requesting a license. Check the
appropriate sales order.
You now have to specify the parameters of the FlexLM License Server that will be hosting your license. Once
you have retrieved the parameters of your Rational License Server, specify them in your request for a floating
license. When you have entered the information, click on “Generate”.

Once generated, the License Key Center will display a page with your newly generated floating license key. You
can now download the license key by clicking on the “Download” button. When the lience key file is downloaded
(the name should be the name you specified for your server with the .upd extension), store it in a secure place
and make the file available on your license key server.

Deploy the floating licenses
Install the floating licenses on your license server
Once you generated and downloaded your floating license key, go on your FlexLM License Server and access
your license key file (.upd file). Under Windows, after having installed the FlexLM License server, the .upd files
should be associated with the IBM Rational License Key Administrator. So a double-clik on your generated
license file, should start the License Key Administrator and requests the import action of the file.

Your license server is now ready to distribute the floating licenses. Continue your setup with “Configure the
product to use floating licenses”.
Configure Rational Software Modeler to use floating licences
Back on the workstation where you installed IBM Rational Software Modeler, start the IBM Installation Manager
software and then select the “Manage Licenses” option. Doing this, the software will present you the various
pakacges defined on your workstation. Expand the package that holds the product for which you would like to
make use of the floating license.

Select the product to configure, check the option “Configure Floating license support” and click on
Read and accept the license agreements then click again on

Normally your list should be empty. Simply click on the “+” icon to enter the specifications of your license server.
The information required is either the IP address of your license server, either its fully qualified host name (better
than IP is your server has it IP changed over time). Optionnally, specify the port number on which your server is
listening. If you don't specify anything, it will presume your server is listening on default port 27000.

By clicking on
, the IBM Installation Manager confirms that you have configured the product to make
use of a floating license. Click again on
and close the IBM Installation Manager.
Your product is now configured to retrieve the floating license from your license server.
Verify the usage of the floating license by the product
Start your product. If you wish, you can verify that your Eclipse-based product uses the floating license through
the “Manage Licenses” option of the “Help” menu.

• When you have to download either a product fix or free product like the IBM Rational Installer, then use
the IBM support portal.
Using IBM developerWorks (dW)
The IBM developerWorks (dW) website is typically used by non-IBM customers or existing IBM customers who
decide to evaluate a specific product (which is not yet installed in their install base). When downloading a
product from IBM developerWorks, you also obtain an evaluation key valid for a specific period of time. The
provided evaluation key is always a seat-specific licence (FlexLM node-locked license or an authorized user
license key). This seat-license restricts which software product features can be evaluated. For example, it isn't
feasible to perform an evaluation of Rational RequisiteWeb since it requires a floating license to run. If you need
to evaluate such a capability, then contact a local IBM Rational Sales representative to discuss your needs or
check the Rational Product Release public page.
Example: Downloading Rational Software Modeler 7.5 for a trial
To download IBM Rational Software Modeler 7.5 for a trial period, select the Rational Software Modeler product
from the product list available on the IBM developerWorks trial downloads page. Then specify which method of
download you which to use: either using an installed instance of the IBM Installation Manager for an online
installation, either using HTTP of the Download Director utility to perform an offline installation.

On the IBM website, the Rational Product Release public page lists the various latest product releases that are
available. Specific products that are using exclusively floating licenses are available on this page and not on IBM
dW. For example, The FlexLM License Manager can't be downloaded from IBM dW but is available on the
Rational Product Release page.

To download Rational Software Modeler 7.0.5 using the the Rational Product Release public page, you follow
exactly the same procedure as explained previously for the FlexLM License Server.
Important note: At the time of writing this document, it appears that the Rational Product Release public page
only offers the download release 7.0.5 of the IBM Rational Software Modeler product although the latest version
is 7.5. If you need the latest release, use the IBM developerWorks Rational trial download page.
Using IBM Passport Advantage Online (PAO) tool
When you, or one of your colleague purchased a specific IBM Rational product, the handling of your Purchase
Order by IBM will lead to the generation of “Proof Of Entitlement” document sent by IBM to your organization.
Within that “Proof Of Entitlement” document, IBM will communicate you:
• the “site number” of your company
• the name of an individual working for your company that is considered as the “primary contact”.
By “primary contact”, IBM means the person within your company that has been designated as the individual
who got granted the rights to login into the “Passport Advantage Online” web tool and to administer the access to
it. When a “primary contact” is logged into the “Passport Advantage Online” online tool for customers, (s)he can
add additional colleagues (“secondary contacts”). When you don't have access yet to the tool and know you
aren't the primary contact for your company, you may self-nominate yourself as a contact. The primary contact of
your company will then have to confirm your access request. When having access to the online tool, both the
primary contact and the secondary contacts, will have the possibility to either download the software their
company is entitled for, either request a physical media with the software.
Using the IBM Support portal
The IBM Support portal is THE place where you _as IBM Rational customer_ will able to find: the links to IBM
Rational forums or local Rational User Groups, technotes explaining known problems and resolutions, product
documentation and updates (fixes). Some common used products like the IBM Installation Manager is also
available from the IBM Support portal. To access all information related to the IBM Rational Installation Manager,
go to the IBM support portal and search for that product or go to the IBM Installation Manager Support page.

Installing the FlexLM License Server software
Once you downloaded the binaries of the “IBM Rational FlexLM License Server”, copy the files on the computer
that will have the role of your license server and run its installer (install.exe) located in the
“\disk1\InstallerImage_win32” folder. If you never installed a Rational product on the targeted computer,

Rational FlexLM License server successfully installed
Once the software is installed, we suggest you to record the identity of your server (see the section “Record your
FlexLM License server identity”) since that information is necessary when requesting floating licenses from the
IBM Rational License Key Center.
Record your FlexLM License server identity
To allow the License Key Center remember which floating license has been installed on which server, there 3
ways to record the identity of your server:
• using the disk id of the server,
• using the ethernet address,
• using the host ID.
When your server is running on a windows box, you can choose between ethernet address or disk id. Both
information can be retrieved, once connected on your server, either using the “IBM Rational License Key
Administrator” or running the “hostinfo.exe” utility.

Installing Rational Software Modeler
Once you downloaded the binaries of the “IBM Rational Software Modeler” product, unzip the files under a
common directory so that you end-up with two folders: “RSM_SETUP” and “RSM”. The “RSM” folder containing the
files issued from the various product disks (eg. “disk1”, “disk2”, …), the “RSM_SETUP” folder holds the product
launcher and the “IBM Rational Installer” product.
Start the “Rational Software Modeler” launcher (launchpad.exe) located in the “\RSM_SETUP” folder.

Retrieving floating license(s)
Request temporary floating license(s)
In case you have a purchase order currently under process at IBM and didn't received yet your Proof-OfEntitlement for the IBM Rational software purchase but you wish to already install the product and eventually
start the usage of it using a floating license then through the Rational Product Release public page and the
“Rational support – Temporary License Key” page, you can respectively request the download of a product
release and request a temporary license keys.
Retrieve your permament floating license(s)
Permanent floating licenses can be obtained by customers through the IBM Rational License Key Center.

After you're logged into the License Key Center, select the “Get keys” option (available on the left-side of the
page) and then select the hyperlink specifying the product for which you're wishing to retrieve a floating license.
In case of IBM Rational Software Modeler, depending the details of your purchase, you will see a list of license
key types you may request. You could see as license key types for that product:
• “IBM Rational Software Modeler – Floating License Key”,
• “IBM Rational Software Modeler v.7.5.4 Activation Kit”,
• “IBM Rational Software Modeler v.7.5 Activation Kit”,
• “IBM Rational Software Modeler v.7.0.5 Activation Kit”,
• “IBM Rational Software Modeler v.7.0 Activation Kit”.
Since, this paper describes the usage of the floating license, select “IBM Rational Sofwtare Modeler – Floating
License Key”.
When you have done several sales order regarding the product, the License Key Center will show a list of the
various sales orders/products that are linked to the product for which you are requesting a license. Check the
appropriate sales order.
You now have to specify the parameters of the FlexLM License Server that will be hosting your license. Once
you have retrieved the parameters of your Rational License Server, specify them in your request for a floating
license. When you have entered the information, click on “Generate”.

Once generated, the License Key Center will display a page with your newly generated floating license key. You
can now download the license key by clicking on the “Download” button. When the lience key file is downloaded
(the name should be the name you specified for your server with the .upd extension), store it in a secure place
and make the file available on your license key server.

Deploy the floating licenses
Install the floating licenses on your license server
Once you generated and downloaded your floating license key, go on your FlexLM License Server and access
your license key file (.upd file). Under Windows, after having installed the FlexLM License server, the .upd files
should be associated with the IBM Rational License Key Administrator. So a double-clik on your generated
license file, should start the License Key Administrator and requests the import action of the file.

Your license server is now ready to distribute the floating licenses. Continue your setup with “Configure the
product to use floating licenses”.
Configure Rational Software Modeler to use floating licences
Back on the workstation where you installed IBM Rational Software Modeler, start the IBM Installation Manager
software and then select the “Manage Licenses” option. Doing this, the software will present you the various
pakacges defined on your workstation. Expand the package that holds the product for which you would like to
make use of the floating license.

Normally your list should be empty. Simply click on the “+” icon to enter the specifications of your license server.
The information required is either the IP address of your license server, either its fully qualified host name (better
than IP is your server has it IP changed over time). Optionnally, specify the port number on which your server is
listening. If you don't specify anything, it will presume your server is listening on default port 27000.
